I’m fed up with being told what I need to cope with cold weather, colds and flu’s, power outages etc. As an adult I can think and plan for myself. I don’t need to be told to have food in the house in case it snows etc. If someone can’t plan ahead they shouldn’t be living alone.
😂 I feel the same way. Our local news must think all its listeners are complete imbeciles. "Don't forget your sweater. Get gas today. Remember to close your windows. The winds is going to blow next week." Etc. Etc.
Also, worth making a note that the Framers are planning to blockage the supermarkets distribution centres with their tractors from the 10th Jan, so potential for the shops to be a tad empty, so make a plan. The farmers need our support
I refuse to take heed of this ' you must have these 6 items' hooha. I probably have them anyway! But the poor managers and staff of supermarkets will be groaning in despair as they get moaned or shouted at by customers because the shelves are swept clear of said 6 items. Spare a thought for them, be kind, please. They dont order stuff directly anymore - the computers take the information from the tills and 'just in time' order for each store. The managers genuinely dont know until a short time before what is arriving at their store. The principle behind 'just in time' delivery is that the organisation does not order more than is needed and therefore saves money on transport and wastage. ( how do I know? I worked in a supermarket and studied business economics at degree level - which was very enlightening about the way the top of companies think and are run!! Makes one very cynical.)
In this part of the world (a different continent) the forecast shows at least 14 days in a row where the temperature will not ever get up to freezing. At those temperatures, a power cut could have very serious effects for people. I'm not feeling panic, but since the forecast also includes a possible ice storm, it is something to take seriously. Panic is what I felt when my husband was terminally ill and we faced everything from tornado warnings to blizzard warnings (obviously at different times of the year). Being responsible for someone who is already in precarious health does increase the fear factor immeasurably.
You lot up North are expert on how to deal with this. Never had --15 down here in se england. However, we have very icy lanes and hills so very hard to walk on or drive on. I have to buy shoes that have a good grip or some of those icy shoe cover things. where possible I stay inside, so easy to have a fall and have a nasy accident. we have enough food and water and 'blankies' and bubble wrapped our windows. i have usb clothes and hand warmers great for power cuts.
You need a wrench to turn the water off, a gloved hand to turn the valves and drain your pipes, and the number to a good friend with electricity. As a survivor of the great Texas freeze of 2021 with a little over a week with no power and temps in the teens (F), it does help to buy a home with the understanding that freezes and power outages happen. We purposely bought a home with natural gas and electricity. Thus far, freezes have only taken one or the other out, but not both. If both go, I will plug the chest freezer up to the Jackery, and go find someone to stay with as we have a list of people/family or friends who we have a Texas pact with for storms and outages.
I dread to think how many poor grannies will not make it through this freezing weather. Please all check on your neighbours if you have a moment. It could literally save a life. I’m not in the uk but if there’s a situation where I live we make a point of doing the rounds.
Quite right. My view is that I can do nothing about world events. I can however look after my neighbours. I've got four I check up on and help out. If everyone everywhere did that the world would be a nicer place...maybe! 😮😊
Over the years I always brought the children with me to check on the elderly in our area. A pint of milk or a newspaper with a little chat does the soul good.
We had a wind storm last month and lost power and internet for 1.5 days. I used a small butane stove to heat water and soup. I also had a small propane heater to help heat me up. It was a little boring but we survived. It was a good dry run for a longer outage. I do want to get a power pack to run the fridge because I think the outages will become more frequent and longer in duration.
Looks like a basic list to me. It is floods, cyclones, and fire for me to prepare for yearly. Not gloating but we are experiencing the nicest Christmas weather in decades. It is 28°c with a gentle sea breeze 😊, usually 35°c and 99% humidity this time of year with nightly thunderstorms, blackouts and flooding. Take care and best wishes to you all.
I do keto so don't normally use bread and milk otherwise pretty well set up. We all seem to have a nervous breakdown in the event of a small amount of snow. The things I do make sure I have in the event of a a prolonged power cut are camping wipes and dry shampoo to keep clean if no hot water available and plenty of bottled water and loo rolls. I use the head torches and am lucky enough to have a log burner. My boys got me a wind up radio for Christmas which can also run off solar
I've always marvelled at the items we're told to stock up on too. I'm a non-milk drinker and eat very little bread. I'd prefer to have fresh fruit and vegetables here in an emergency. And yes, definitely loo rolls!
At the risk of tempting fate, I'm one of those people who will potentially go most of my adult life without a power cut. I can't recall experiencing a power cut in about....27 years!
There contact allowing Russian gas to transit through Ukraine has finished.nTye Ukrainian government hasn't renewed it and gave a year's notice to the EU that it wouldn't be renewed. Hope this helps.
We are expecting a possibility of a big snow here, in N.Central Kentucky, USA, with possible ice, (which means power outages), by Sunday with a high of 1.1C, (Friday night it should be -8.3C and next week one day should see 6.6C with low of -13.8 C). We are all ready, just making sure fresh meat is cooked and laundry done. That is a must for me. Good luck to you all.
Love how the government tell you how to prep with out really teling you anything If the electric and gas go off how you going to cook your pasta .haha And I'm sure there still going to expect everyone to go to work on snow and ice I live in London and I have a Kelly kettle that I can boils water and soups ( I am.lucky enough to have a garden to use it And I.have snow grippers to Go.overy boots so.I hopefully I don't end up.om.A&E
Get a lantern with a loop. Put a hook in the ceiling where convenient. You can put a tealight in which will give some light. Or put the candle on a shelf but not if there is another shelf above it!
Naw, how about having an affordable warmth for your house. Rather than take on board all this rubbish about how we can economise, wear jumpers and use hot water bottles,.I call BS on all o this. Gee us affordable energy end of
Here we call it the French Toast Alert. Everyone goes to the store for milk, bread, and eggs. Perfect for French toast!

As long as I have my favourite tea i don;t need food. I can fast. But you'll have to prize my cup of tea from my cold dead hand.

We have a yellow weather warning for snow from Saturday through to Monday. The forecast temperature for Sunday is 12 degrees. 🙄
It's blooming Baltic here! On the other hand no heavy claggy skies! Beautiful crisp day. 😊

When you learn how this world works it’s fun watching everyone panic at the slightest hint of any fear event . 😂

If you're over a certain age, you know. Ask granny.
Russia cut off gas to Europe yesterday I would say energy price rises on the horizon
Due to to up in January anyway!!
I think it was planned, fairly sure companies had arranged alternative supplies already

Can you get a small generator, wishing everyone safety during this difficult event ❤❤❤
They need to let older people educate younger people for life in school imo
