Love these stories and the sounds of the fiddle n banjos are beautiful could I have the names of these tunes❤️
😘😘😘😀
Greetings from Indian Creek
We met his gr-grandson on the Abrams Falls trail in Cades Cove. We were out of water, our tongues dragging, he just stopped and insisted he fill up our water bottles and had a chat. So friendly and nice. He looked a lot like Alvin: strawberry blond, tan, handsome and fit. It was the highlight of our day!
Awesome 👏
That's so cool!
Wow awesome
I bet it was! Ohhh to be back wandering among those mountains again.
What an honor that was to meet Sgt. Alvin York's gr-grandson ! And that is some beautiful country in that area. Used to live just over the mountain from Cades Cove, Cherokee, N.C. Miss those mountains. 😊
What a beautiful tribute you paid to this God fearing man, who listened to his mama and his Lord. Thank you...
Thank you Ruby ❤️
Proud to say that Sgt. Alvin York is my 14th cousin. A true hero in every sense of the word, G-d bless him!❤
❤️
I have watched that movie, "Sergeant York" several times, and it serves me well to hear that the lightening bolt that guided Alvin to God was actually his mother. Us mountain boys love and loved our mothers with a love as big as the mountains and are guided throughout our lives by our mother's words. Our fathers also, for they worked their lives away for our upbringing. Thanks for the great story of a great hero amongst many who kept us all safe in this great country of ours.
Thank you Charlie, God bless
I grew up in Jasmestown Tennessee. The highschool graduated from was started and named after,Sargeant York. We attended his funeral. His home and Grist Mill is a Tennessee State Park. His son Andrew was a Parkranger there and when you toured the house, Andrew would give the historyof his family. Sargeant Yourk, Mrs Gracie and son Tommy are inturned in the Wolf River Cemetery.
love this, thanks for sharing
That's one I'd love to visit!
Did you know my cousin
Jerry Campbell? Jerry was killed in Vietnam, he knew Alvin. You see we were Gracie’s 3rd cousin. Visiting the Campbell’s, apparently just before Alvin past. I sadly opted out Visiting Sgt. York to go horseback riding with Jerry. My mom and sister met with him but at that time he was blind due to diabetes. How many times I regretted not to have meet this man. I’m old now, but know I will meet him in Paradise someday!
I love your stories. My Uncle Jack who came from Salem, Illinois and was living the oilfield life in Wyoming. He came down in the early 1980’s to look at the grave of a modern day disciple of the Lord. I have a picture of my uncle Jack and it moved him deeply. He said he would soon meet brother Alvin in the Lords Kingdom. Fifteen years later he met “Brother Alvin”.
I love your stories. I let my aging father listen to your stories. He loves your stories. “He says the Phillips boy is a fine story teller”.
Fine a compliment you can get from Dad.
That is a mighty fine compliment, makes me proud to he him say that. Tell him the Phillips boy said hello 👋
@@TheAppalachianStoryteller I’ll do that for sure. I’m going to see him this afternoon. Going to let him listen.
My husband and I went to visit his home and resting place a few years ago. What an incredible man and life he lived!
Yes he was
Alvin York is an East Tennessee legend. He was a man to walk the mountains with as the old timers would say in this area.
Yes sir
What a great way to start my Saturday. I first heard of Sgt, York when I was a boy. What a testimony of faith in the Lord. Inspiring. Thank you sir for your excellent production.
I did my best to pay respect to this true hero
@@TheAppalachianStoryteller And you sure did.Proud of your story,JD! We must never forget!
Sargent York was a great solider. He went war despite being a religious man who didn't want kill anyone. Un like Trump and most members of Senate and house of representives. The poor always fight the rich has privilege.
My Wife's Grandmother (Daisy Slaughter) was Mother York's closest neighbor back then and left ton's of newspaper articles and several rare pictures of Alvin and his Brother George and pictures of the Family on a Fishing/Camping trip to a small lake on the other side of "Jimtown" with Model "T" Fords that Alvin bought when they came out after he got back from the War. I Have a really nice picture of Alvin and his younger Brother holding their guns wearing their hunting clothes. Alvin and Miss Gracie were Fine Christian Folks.
beautiful
What a true American absolutely brought tears to my eyes. Thank you so much for sharing that❤
Thank you ❤️ RIP Sgt. York
Hello JD. I shouldn't be surprised, but you knocked another one out of the park. What a hero Alvin York was. They don't make many like that anymore and to have you tell the story made it even more enjoyable. Thanks for sharing this story.
Thank you Troy, I did my best to transport folks back in time and understand what it was like for Sgt. York from his perspective
I recently watched the Alvin York movie with Gary Cooper
Your reading was very well done
Thank you all veterans
thank you my friend, God Bless
Sir, you are the finest storyteller alive today. You probably have heard this, and most likely have a hard time believing it, but you bring these stories to life with your ability to read them in a good ol' mountain boy accent and inflection at just the correct moment that makes you sound like the writer lounging with his children and grandchildren in a sitting room just telling his own story.
Wow, what a humbling compliment, thank you so much. I appreciate your kind words and encouragement, hope you are enjoying the stories
i saw the movie when i was young, i am almost 66 years old. with the event of the computer i read Avin Yorks diary. it is fascinating. Alvin met Gracie Williams and she was already a Christian, and she is the one who lead Alvin to the Lord. i have been a hunter and rifleman and handloader all my life. i have several flintlocks that i shoot competition and hunt with. no doubt Alvin was a great shot, but a turkey's head at 100yds? you can't even see a turkey head at 100yds! LOL! i love your story's JD,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
It’s great that you mentioned his diary- I wrote this story in my own words after studying his diary- the part about the turkeys head at a hundred yards is Alvin’s words
@@TheAppalachianStoryteller oh well, the truth is the truth, a turkeys head is 2in wide at the most. i am not doubting you JD, it is the shooter i have a problem with. i read the diary about 10 years ago so i have forgotten that, a moving 2in target at 100yds with open sights am a round ball is beyond my belief. and believe it or not York was a liberal, so, just because he said it don't make it so,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
I'm sure that there are those that have no problem seeing a turkey's head at a hundred yards away, because I know for a fact that when I was a kid I used to be able to put a thread through the eye of a needle with just the light reflecting out of a television
I have shot squirrels at 100 + yards. I have no doubt that York could and have shot turkey heads at that distance and more. When you grow up with a rifle or pistol in your hands, you get real good or go hungry.
exactly. @@Mark-sj7lv
I was so happy to hear the early life story of SGT York. Great history right there... Loved the movie!
Thank you Pinky!
Exellent tribute to a true American hero. My mom was from Morristown Tennessee. The movie Sargent York moved me to seek an intimate relationship with Jesus. Love that movie.
I dont think many could do such an outstanding job retelling the story of Sargent Alvin York. He was one of a kind, an example to be followed and revered.
Thank you
An American Hero to be remembered
I am so enthralled with all of your videos. I can listen to your voice all day. It sounds like family.
thank you ma'am
This is a fantastic story on this American hero. You have to think that his father gave him the training when he was a young boy shooting turkeys and squirrels to make him a marksman. JD, you gave awesome special effects to the pictures. Thank you.
Thanks Edward! I spend 40 hours working on this story, thanks for noticing the special effects
Shooting turkeys and squirrels was not for sport. It was for survival - food to feed an ever growing family.
That was better than ANY documentary I have ever seen about SGT York. Loved it!
Thank you for that, I studied his diary for weeks and visited his grave, and then sat down to tell the story in his own words. RIP to a true hero.
He is a legend and a man I have always liked. At 49 I still love his story and courage he had. Awesome video
Thank you Chris
💕 I have never heard this story... what a beautiful soul. Thank you so very much, for sharing! 💕
Thank you Jodi!
Good story
Thank you Steve ! Have a great day brother
The historical metal band Sabaton have a song about York.
I was first introduced to him through the film with Gary Cooper.
Awesome
What a great story. War is a terrible thing. Sgt York was a true American legend!
Thank Edward- I agree on all counts
One of my favorite heroes when I was little in the 1950's I grew up watching this old movie/Sqt. York and it is still one of my favorite. Love the scene where he got saved and walked in the little white church where Walter Brennan played the pastor.
The church in this video is the real church where he got saved
I always heard that you learn something new every day. I knew he was a hero but didn't know the story of how. Now I know how the VA that is located in my home town got it's name. Thank you for this story.
He was a true hero
Sargent york is my favorite movie of all time
❤️
Yessir!! Another mighty good'n JD!! God bless and have a good'n brother
Thanks Jared!
Excellent, excellent, excellent!!! Thanks so much for your time and efforts in making and sharing this wonderful celebration of a true American hero! 👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you so much Jeremy
Alvin was my Grandma’s cousin. My mom was at his funeral and said it was really a sight to behold. So many people.
Have been a fan of sgt. York since I was 14 and seen the movie with Garry cooper in 1984 . It was the first time I realized what the congressional Medal of Honor was. Thank you for another great informative glimpse of a American hero !
Thank you 🙏
I grew up watching the film Sergeant York. At the U.S. Army Infantry School, Ft. Benning GA, the first hero our drill instructors taught us about was Alvin C. York.
Proud to have served as a grunt in the same army.
Thank you for your service
Such an amazing man. You told his story as it should be told. It us sad that we are losing our History. Thank you for keeping some of it alive.❤
Thank you Sadie!
Thanks fella it's a great story GOD BLESS
Thank you Kevin!
Wonderful accounting of a good man's life. And what one -- from an upbringing, not wealthy, on the mountain, can and did do. Many thanks to him. Wonderful account of an American.
Well said my friend
Thank you.
Alvin York was truely a mazing man. I have seen the movie Gary Cooper played Alvin York well over 50 to 70 times. I could wafch that many more times to. Thank you for sharing this story with us over such a amazing man. God bless you and your family...🙏❤🙏❤🙏

What a great man he was. Thankyou again for another amazing historical recollection.

Hi JD. I live in Scott County TN about an hour from Jamestown. I always love hearing this story. Thanks so much for this. Sergeant York is one of my heroes. Along with my father and grandfather's he was one of the reasons I joined the infantry in the US Army. I tried my best not to disappoint any of them. I hope I succeeded. Thanks again.
Thank you for your service my friend, America needs more men like you
We here in TN. know about A.C.Y. Watch the movie. Read the books. When men were men and knew it. God bless our fighters . Past and present. 🇺🇸 🙏 enjoyed the video. And all the others. Thank you.

Another great episode of storytelling of a true American hero.
Thank you Charlotte!
In the draft of 1917, a man from Tennessee
Overseas to the trenches he went, from the land of the free
Into war he brought two things along, a rifle and his faith
Joined the ranks as a private, assigned to 328th
There on that day
Alvin York entered the fray
Saving the day
82nd all the way
Into the fires of hell, the Argonne, a hero to be
Entered the war from over the sea
Intervene, 1918, all the way from Tennessee
Hill 223
When his faith has been put to the test, the call to arms he heeds
On the eighth of October he went, made a sergeant for his deeds
Fearless, leading the raid of the war, machine gun on the hill
Charge the enemy taking the prisoners by power of his will
There on that day
Sergeant York entered the fray
Saving the day
82nd all the way
Into the fires of hell, the Argonne, a hero to be
Entered the war from over the sea
Intervene, 1918, all the way from Tennessee
Hill 223
What Sergeant York achieved that day
Would echo to the U.S.A
It's 82nd all the way
Death from above, what they now say
What Sergeant York achieved that day
Echoes from France to the U.S.A
It's 82nd all the way
Death from above, what they now say
Into the fires of hell, the Argonne, a hero to be
Entered the war from over the sea
Intervene, 1918, all the way from Tennessee
Hill 223
Hell, the Argonne, a hero to be
Entered the war from over the sea
Intervene, 1918, all the way from Tennessee
Hill 223

Sabaton, NICE
HAH! I knew some of my fellow Sabaton fans were going to pop up _somewhere_ in the comments on this video with lyrics from “82nd All the Way”!
Thank you for telling the story of Sgt. Alvin York. He was an American hero but it is heartbreaking to hear his story of World War 1. God had His hand upon him!
He sure did, a simply amazing story
Sargeant Willie Sandlin from Breathitt County Kentucky was another WW1 Congressional Medal of Honor winner he got as many medals as Sgt. Alvin York but Willie was a quite man and didn’t want any publicity, he was also raised in the Mountains of Kentucky.
I’ll look into his story, thanks for the heads up
My Great Grandfather died in the Argonne while serving with the 82nd Division. He was 25 years old, and was killed in action October the 10th 1918. A month and a day later "the Great War" ended.
Those were amazing men!
I wouldn't say he's unsung. He's probably THE most well-known and loved heroes of WW1. A national treasure.
Thanks for watching
My wife is from Jamestown we live in Rickman Tn now but she’s got a big family still in Jimtown her mom and dad passed away not long ago.
💜
As a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division, Alvin York was one of the first soldiers we learned about ❤❤
❤️
Might be my favorite story so far, JD - but it's a hard choice with so many others!
Thanks so much, I appreciate that! Lots of time went into this one!
@@TheAppalachianStoryteller - I realize that all heroes have clay feet (like the rest of us), and it's perhaps wisely said to avoid meeting them. But Alvin York had to be at least among the very best to ever walk this planet.
What a great story! The best detailed account of his life I've heard had me on the edge of my seat. Thanks JD😎👍
Thank you Kathy- I tried to approach this thru Sgt. Yorks eyes, and tell it in a way that has never been told
I live in Albany ky not very far from here. Spent a lot of time in and around fintress co tn and I'm so proud to be ever so distantly connected to this man. My mom's stepdad was born in Jamestown and I have kin in Pickett Co TN just over the state line.
awesome
Love your videos and your voice.
Thank you so much
Great video 😊
Thank you Richard
Heard of him through the movie with Gary Cooper. Sergeant York. Mr. Storyteller, this dedication and narrative was superbly done and well read. on point. Loved it.
Thank you, I did my best to honor his legacy
Such a cool story!
Thank you!
I watched the ole black and white movie about Alvin York when I was a small boy. When I think of him the one word that comes to mind is wholesome. But from now on when hear his name all I'll think of is "blessed are the meek my ass " 😄 uh uhmm...pardon me, I had a JD stuck in my throat. What has stuck with me for the better part of my life is how Alvin stayed true to himself and his roots and how our government and the people of the USA looked after him. That's another story in itself. This is probably my favorite video JD, thanks for helping my meek ass start the day off right. 🇺🇸👍👍😄
Thanks James- I wrote this story after studying Alvin’s diary, “the blessed quote” is what I believe Sgt. York felt after being lied to that he was a peacemaker when being shipped over there
@@TheAppalachianStoryteller I envy you on many aspects, but having access to his diary... is it available to the public? As far as Alvin considering the good book in relation to reality the at hand, I'm sure he did and he came to the right conclusion. I found it hilarious. I've gotten where I look for your comical snippets in your stories, it just one of the many ingredients I enjoy in them.
@@jamesdeen3011 His diary is available in book form, I purchased it at Yorks Visitor Center in Pall Mall TN
@@theappalachiachannel that movie really affected me, like how I want to git closer to the lord, and like ,how there ain't nothen bettern a good piece of bottom land, and like how I really want to kill people now....
@@theappalachiachannel thanks JD for the info. By the way how affected do you think I am by that there movie?
Wow, I’ve heard and watched Alvin York’s story many times, but never with this much respect and impact. So well done once again, JD.
It seems that those who rarely see the actual fighting, love war.
Those they deem expendable are always the ones fighting in it.
Mostly poor, simple men who have little but faith and Providence to guide them in the wars of the affluent. Sacrificial lambs in the slaughter, even today as we listen to your moving tribute to Sgt Alvin York these wars continue.
Thanks for shedding the light on this true American Hero, simply trying to get back to the Hills and mountains he loved.
“Blessed are the peacemakers”, indeed.
Thank you, I can tell you received the. True message of this video. Indeed, I studied Alvin’s personal diary and made a pilgrimage to his grave and only then did I attempt to share his story from his perspective. I did my best to salute a true hero and share his story to the next generation

What a man. What a good, solid, salt-of-the-earth man.
My late husband was a man much like Alvin York. He could be counted on by family, friends and strangers. That was 45 years ago and I miss him still.
I've read about Alvin York and seen movies but this recording seemed to bring him alive, to show his humanity - and his humility.
Thank you for another moving tribute to our Appalachian forebears, JD.
Thank you for that- I tried to tell his story in a way it had never been told before
Sorry for your loss 🙏
I think this is my favorite story yet ❤ what an impact he made altho war is ugly, it is sometimes necessary. He did so much good then and after.

It's sad that with him being such a decorated war hero that he practically died penniless.
Real history that I never knew. I love Gary Cooper's Seargent York movie and have watched it many times over the years. It doesn't even come close to the real history of Alvin York. Thank for making this video.

I was raised in eastern Kentucky, but even there as a kid in the 70s and 80s, we still knew about Alvin York. I saw the Gary Cooper movie about him when I was 13 and it’s been my favorite movie ever since. All of America’s schoolchildren should learn about this great hero regardless of it being more than a century ago now. I’m my mind, he’s just as important as Napoleon and George Washington. Thank you for a wonderful narration!

Wow what an amazing man, Patriot, and philanthropist! I’ve never heard his whole story. During my time as a kid we never really learned much about the Great War but more about WW2. Now that I’m a grown man and amateur historian I’ve delved much deeper into WW1, and let me tell you it’s fascinating, and absolutely terrifying. The sheer amount of folks who died and then barely two decades later it produced a psychopath who was convinced Gods chosen people were the cause of all of the Vyemar Republics(Germany’s) problems. In turn cause our country to hand over its destiny to the military industrial complex, and eventually take us off the gold standard. Don’t get me wrong I’m pro strong military and always support our boys but now we are in a sad state of affairs with our military especially how they recruit for shooters/boots on the ground. God bless Alvin York and all the other brave who gave for God and Country!! Thank You!!!
