Stevie Williams - Overcoming Adversity

- One of the pioneers of inner city skateboarding, Stevie Williams has seen it all. He started skating way back when the hood considered it a “white boy” activity. Back before it was considered cool and every rapper around owned a board. Back when he was “Lil Stevie”, gangbanging around LOVE Park as the black sheep of his family, his neighborhood, and the skate community. In celebration of Black History Month, Stevie goes in depth on how he embraced his roots and overcame adversity. Never forget where you come from. And never forget that through skateboarding, we're all one in the same, despite any differences in skin color or background.

"We let all that shit go, to pick up skateboarding, to learn skateboarding... we are our own race, and that's who I stand up for. Skateboarders." #LEGEND
growing up as a black kid that skated, i connect with everything he is saying. so real
This guy... Been inspiring me since before I ever heard him speak or saw a video part. It really was that tough bein a black skater in the 90's but just seein his ads in Transworld back then, how he dressed, and where he skated, all that just meant so much to me as the only black skater in the hood. It took true love back then to go against the the grain that hard. Like the love it took to be in an interracial relationship in the 50's or somethin. I used to get made fun of by black ppl and white ppl just skatin down the street but dudes like Stevie Williams, Jahmal Williams, Gershon Mosely, Kareem Campbell... Seein them do it made it easier for me cuz I knew I wasn't the only one that struggled with that shit.
Thanks Stevie
cant believe I forgot to mention Brandon Turner and Jeremy Holmes. Stevie did a lot for all kinds of people
boondockdread fakts...I went thru it all too...
So many skateboarders have nothing to say. Stevie really has a hold of his thoughts. Well done.
As a sixteen year old black skater Stevie is a huge role model
i swear this guy never ages...
This is so inspiring like holy fuck.
Stevie is one of the most inspiring dudes out there, hes a chill asf person.
One of my favourite skaters all time !!!
Stevie is real AF... skaters are there own race and we dont have to all b the same color but as skaters we are all the same and joined by the same set of rules and moral standing and we all try until we suceed! Our culture is all our own... we always set trends for non-skaters, from music to clothing and shoes and even other sports and sporting events! It was fun to grow up skating and we all learned how to survive by doing what we love! Great interview Stevie and the berrics!!!
Dropin knowledge! Man I remember watching Stevie Williams part from the old DC video too clean! He inspired me that same day to nollie a big loading dock I just kept remembering his song and how clean his part was and I did it first try!
Stevie is a true Pioneer!
Haha yeah I remember him really inspiring my switch and nollie shit. I got all amped up to nollie over this one small hubba ledge, can't remember if I ever did land it. Must've tried 500 times.
I hate when people make bullshit stories like this up.
LMAO keep telling yourself that buddy.
This man has always been one of my inspirations.
Dealing with haters comes with territory no matter how good you get. It's a shame people quit skating because of that.
"Try, try, try, try, until you achieve. Dont give up no matter what."
Stevie Williams.
Stevie is a legend
Stevie williams is a legend, not just for skateboarding
10/10 would do again
Much respect! Skate forever!
The best interview I have seen in awhile....keep it up!
This is deep.

He seems like he could fill a black friend spot on the Always Sunny gang's roster.

Always keeping it real!
The realist shit I've heard in a bit
Amazing dude right there.

Skateboarding does not discriminate.
HELL yeah perfect!!
Hell yes. Stevie speaks to the congregation!
Dope
I tried thank you even with roller blading 8:33
This was pretty awesome but I got a guest ion for those that know he sene better then me. When Stevie said he just never let up what about when he had stopped skating and Josh Kalis saw him drinking and said that if he started to skate again Stevie could live at his place rent free or do I have a story mix up? Not trying to be a dick but if Stevie had quit and had no place to live then the guy who kinda put you back on needs a BIG thank you and mention in a story like this.
lately I've been thinkin about if Bruce Lee was born way later and got to learn 360flips and stuff. imagine
shane oniell is the reincarnation of bruce lee.....
Lmfao. Well, being the closest to God, he probably would've invented the 3 flip. Lolllll. Good comment!
Motivated by the haters
#Skateboarders
American hero
Wattch this video with DMX- Where the Hood at instrumebtal playing
looks like stevie is rappin'
Hmm...
One thing I don't understand is you have a lot of black athletes in interviews saying they came from the ghetto and how bad it was for them. Then at the same time you never hear anything being done about it. I just wonder why that is. You have an athlete make 20 million a year and the neighborhood he came from is still the ghetto.
Good question.
*the
CREAM ! #Wu-tang !
I know this is relatively separate to this because I like this skater but why do we have a black history month and not a white history month? Seems a bit one way to me and a shame because many of us don't know where we come from
notworthit7 lol troll
Bro everything is already white washed , you wanna take away our only month ? Sad
#bored
those lips though....
So his own community turned their backs on him interesting how things work I used to get that wanna be white boy stuff too
