Stevie Williams - Overcoming Adversity

  • One of the pioneers of inner city skateboarding, Stevie Williams has seen it all. He started skating way back when the hood considered it a “white boy” activity. Back before it was considered cool and every rapper around owned a board. Back when he was “Lil Stevie”, gangbanging around LOVE Park as the black sheep of his family, his neighborhood, and the skate community. In celebration of Black History Month, Stevie goes in depth on how he embraced his roots and overcame adversity. Never forget where you come from. And never forget that through skateboarding, we're all one in the same, despite any differences in skin color or background.

"We let all that shit go, to pick up skateboarding, to learn skateboarding... we are our own race, and that's who I stand up for. Skateboarders." #LEGEND

This guy... Been inspiring me since before I ever heard him speak or saw a video part. It really was that tough bein a black skater in the 90's but just seein his ads in Transworld back then, how he dressed, and where he skated, all that just meant so much to me as the only black skater in the hood. It took true love back then to go against the the grain that hard. Like the love it took to be in an interracial relationship in the 50's or somethin. I used to get made fun of by black ppl and white ppl just skatin down the street but dudes like Stevie Williams, Jahmal Williams, Gershon Mosely, Kareem Campbell... Seein them do it made it easier for me cuz I knew I wasn't the only one that struggled with that shit.
    Thanks Stevie

Stevie is real AF... skaters are there own race and we dont have to all b the same color but as skaters we are all the same and joined by the same set of rules and moral standing and we all try until we suceed! Our culture is all our own... we always set trends for non-skaters, from music to clothing and shoes and even other sports and sporting events! It was fun to grow up skating and we all learned how to survive by doing what we love! Great interview Stevie and the berrics!!!

Dealing with haters comes with territory no matter how good you get. It's a shame people quit skating because of that.

This was pretty awesome but I got a guest ion for those that know he sene better then me. When Stevie said he just never let up what about when he had stopped skating and Josh Kalis saw him drinking and said that if he started to skate again Stevie could live at his place rent free or do I have a story mix up? Not trying to be a dick but if Stevie had quit and had no place to live then the guy who kinda put you back on needs a BIG thank you and mention in a story like this.

    Hmm...
One thing I don't understand is you have a lot of black athletes in interviews saying they came from the ghetto and how bad it was for them. Then at the same time you never hear anything being done about it. I just wonder why that is. You have an athlete make 20 million a year and the neighborhood he came from is still the ghetto.

I know this is relatively separate to this because I like this skater but why do we have a black history month and not a white history month? Seems a bit one way to me and a shame because many of us don't know where we come from
