  • Joining the Royal Navy as an officer means you become part of our command team during vital missions -- both in times of conflict and peace. You'll also be responsible for the training, development, welfare, morale and ultimately the lives of your teams. You will have lots under your charge but with the training you'll get at Britannia Royal Naval College (BRNC) Dartmouth, you will develop all the skills you need to be an effective leader.

In these uncertain times and for those that don't want to be called up you can pre-empt conscription by getting into a mental health programme now - just the written record or proof of a few visits to a mental clinician will do

I'm in the process of joining the Royal Navy Reserves as an officer in the Maritime Trade Operations department. My full time career is going to be as a Deck Officer onboard cruise ships hopefully.

dezboss how are you finding it? I'm really interested in applying for an officer role, just debating what department would be best.

osian007 Do you mean in the RNR or the Merchant Navy? I won't be starting in the Merchant Navy till January and I'm only just going through the officer application proccess for the RNR. Haven't seen anything yet!
I want to go into the MTO branch because it will be useful for my career in the Merchant Navy. If you're unsure about which branch to join, I'd highly recommend you going for a general one to one chat at an RNR unit, you will get an insight into service life second to none!

Ive been thinking about either joining the Royal Navy as a logistics officer or possibly a deck officer in the RFA. Thanks mate, good luck with your application.

osian007 I always fancied the Navy as a full time career, but then the Coalition Government came and the cuts swiftly followed. My thoughts then turned to the RFA but they wouldn't take me for a cadetship without B grade Maths GCSE. The company I am going for is a Deck Officer cadetship with Princess Cruises, which I think would be good fun and a very rewarding career!
However, my passion for the Royal Navy hasn't waned at all, so I am opting to become a reserve officer. It looks immensely challenging, but I can't wait!
Thanks very much mate, and the very best of luck to you too!

To anyone who's seen both US and UK recruiting ads: How would you say British and American recruiting ads compare in terms of accuracy, effectiveness, etc?

UK recruiting ads are definitely more effective, the USN “forged by the sea” are just plain boring

British recruitment vids are better at telling the truth

I think when making this assessment one must consider the target audience and potential differences between American and British culture, meaning American ads may appeal more to Americans and British to the British.
