  • Shiandra Gooneratne uses her speech, The Untold Story, to give a voice to the women of Sri Lanka who were affected by the civil war.
The International Public Speaking Competition is at the heart of the English-Speaking Union's mission, bringing together oracy and cultural exchange in one week-long event.
The competition brings young speakers from all over the world to London for a week of cultural exchange and public speaking contests. Established in 1980, it now reaches over 600,000 young people in more than 50 countries across the globe, showcasing the highest standard of public speaking, while giving delegates an opportunity to meet and engage with other young people of different backgrounds and nationalities.
2017’s final theme was ‘Peace is not an absence of war’ with finalists creating their own speeches around this theme. Find out more about IPSC by visiting esu.org/ipsc. Read our top tips on how to give a great speech here www.esu.org/blog/giving-great...

The English-Speaking Union believes in the power of spoken communication. We help young people to ‘discover their voices’ - to engage with the world and to talk more confidently, to formulate and organise their ideas more effectively and, just as importantly, to listen.
We work to put oracy - speaking and listening skills - at the centre of the school curriculum, and through our debate and public speaking programmes, competitions and cultural exchanges, we ensure that young people have the opportunity to speak up and make their voices heard.
Founded in 1918 to promote better communication between people of all cultures and countries, we now look forward to the next 100 years, working with those who need it most and helping them to change their lives and communities for the better.
Our RUclips channel is a platform for us to stories of other ESU voices and share videos about the work that we do.
