Cornbread is made with butter or bacon fat (I've heard of people using lard, too), all-purpose flour, cornmeal (polenta or maize flour), sugar, baking powder, salt, eggs, and buttermilk (you can sour some milk by adding a bit of white vinegar to a measuring cup and then adding milk. Allow it to sit for five minutes before use). There are two types of cornbread in America: Southern cornbread and Northern cornbread. The major differences being that Southern cornbread is less sweet (it may contain no sweetener, or sorghum, or corn syrup, or cane syrup in place of sugar) and more crumbly. It's usually eaten with dishes where it can either be crumbled into it (think baked beans or chili) or used to sop up juices or sauces on the plate. It's often cooked in a cast iron pan, though not always. Northern cornbread is sweeter, fluffier, and cake-like. It's eaten along side of chowder, salty meats (like ham), Boston baked beans, or baked in American-style muffins as a breakfast food.
Way too much information about cornbread. I hope you enjoyed my TED talk.

@@splintreacts my pleasure. I love baking, so it's easy for me to go off on a tangent about it. (PS, some people like to add chopped jalapeños to their cornbread, and some even like whole corn kernels. I like mine with honey or maple syrup drizzled over the top.)

Virginia girl here, most of my life in Virginia, Maryland, and Florida, so bona fide Southerner.
Southern cornbread is the sweeter one for certain. Every cornbread I've ever eaten is sweet. Most Southerners, while they are brought up making biscuits (scone-like soft savory fluffy biscuits) and pan gravy (from meat drippings) from scratch, will make their cornbread from a box mix (Jiffy or Washington Mills brands) and add extra sugar to it. I never saw anyone crumble their cornbread on anything, just eat it as a side in bites supplementary to the entree, the way you would toast or bagel.
Cornbread is a survivor of our colonial times, when sweet corn was easier to grow and required less clearing of land and expanse of prepared soil than wheat or oats. But it is usually reserved for serving with southern cooking or a bowl of chili (chili itself is basically a southern dish, derived from the culture that hugs the US/Mexican border so basically 'southern'). Still, a slice of cornbread hot from the oven and slathered with butter is a fine thing. I gave up beef and pork decades ago and the box mix is made with lard, but there's now a vegetarian version marketed by Jiffy that makes my southern heart sing!

Another question about the movie that just occurred to me while watching your reaction: John Coffee says he is exhausted from experiencing all the pain and ugliness in the world. I always felt he was giving up on life too soon, because John appears to be only 40ish in this film. However, if Paul and Mr. Jinlgles lived to be well over 108 and 70 (respectively) by getting only a tiny piece of what John was, how old was John Coffee???

Yes , John's initials werent "JC" by accident. This story asked the question "If Jesus came today, how would WE react" and answers it "we wouldnt believe" and would destroy him AGAIN
Also, dont feel TOO sorry for Dela Croix, he certainly didnt deserve THAT horrible death, but he DID deserve to die. In the book you are told about his crime: He was convicted of Raping and murdering a 12 year old girl, then, in an attempt to cover it up, burned the body, and started a fire that killed 6 more people.

I've seen the movie multiple times and over 20 reactions to it... I still cry. Much more of an impact when seeing reactions to it. I feel as though my 'water works' are worse through seeing other people cry due to the fact that I watched my grandpa die when I was young. Too young too understand death, but seeing my mom and others cry, made me cry. If death happens in my family, I feel nothing; however, those around me makes me feel sorrow. It's a strange feeling and I have never understood it.

@@splintreacts One thing's for sure, he'll find it harder and harder to hold back tears upon each rewatch. Also, has this wrecked the watching experience of the 1935 film "Top Hat"? It's probably a really pleasant film but that one scene would have me in a mess of ugly tears as the entire Green Mile movie flashes through my mind.

They rehearse for several reasons. It’s not part of their daily routine, so they want to be in the right mindset. Imagine doing a play and you have opening weekend but you don’t perform again until the next weekend. It’s common to have a brush up in between, just because your lines and blocking aren’t what you’ve spent the week thinking primarily about. You didn’t forget your lines, but they aren’t at the forefront of your mind.
There are lots of things that could go wrong and they need to be on the edge ready for all of it. Some prisoners are violent as they go, some resist.
Paul is also a professional because he understands the solemnity of what they are doing. They are ending a life, but there are also family members coming to see it who should feel closure. So he wants everything to go just right.

    1. YOU WILL CRY
    2. Dabbs Greer/old Paul was ill during production, so his part was done later. He also played Reverend Alden on "Little House on the Prairie".
    3. Hammersmith was not a good lawyer. (most likely a racial thing. It was 1935.)
    4. In the book King briefly covers why the Chief and Del are on death row.
    5. This movie was nominated for Best Supporting Actor and Best Cast but unfortunately neither won.
    6. Players in other King adaptations: Jeffery DeMunn: Shawshank Redemption, The Mist,
Storm of the Century and William Sadler: Shawshank Redemption, The Mist. David Morse:
    The Langoliers.
    7. Goof: Electricity makes the body contract. Del wouldn't be able to scream. (It's necessary because of the length of the execution.)
    8. IRL James Cromwell is a vegan and didn't want to grill meat for the BBQ scene but
was told that in 1935 people actually ate meat so he agreed to have some on the grill.
    9. RE Percy: Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. KARMA's a Bitch. BTW Kudos to Doug Hutchison for the great job of being Percy.👌
    10. John also protected the "patients" at the asylum.
    11. IRL both David Morse and James Cromwell are about the same height as Michael Clark Duncan (RIP). They used planks, a small bed and smaller chair along with trick photography to make John taller.
12 The scene where John takes Mr. Jingles for safe keeping before Del's execution, they used a real mouse, and it pooped on Paul's shoulder, and he brushed it off.
    13. Now we know what the "day old is fine" dry toast is for.
14 EVERYBODY cries and has to take time to reflect. Congratulations you just experienced

Yeah, the story is about American Evangelical Christianity. For example, the bugs that John spits out? They aren't bugs, they're demons. Evangelical Christianity teaches that ailments which afflict humanity are the results of demons which God allows to possess human beings as punishment for Adam and Eve eating the fruit of knowledge, and those particular demons are said to be under control of the Lord of the Flies.
That's why spitting the bugs into Percy makes him kill Wild Bill: it wasn't a tumor, it was demons, which were under John's control because as the son of God, John can command demons.

Ok, so I found the guy kind of dead pan expression, which is ok, some people just legitimately are, but then he verbalized how he felt, which was awesome. I agree that too much was clipped out, I usually see opening scene, walk to cabin, movie his initial break down, explanation of the UTI and why they called death row the green mile. All the reasons to hate Percy (lol) dead man walking clip, him hitting John Coffey, his attack on Del, the clips of him suffering from the uti, him reading what John had done, finding out about hanks wife, the wild Bill deception clip, Percy the coward clip, wild bills antics, including the scene where he traded the nickel for the moon pie, this is getting long, so just all the scenes significant to the story line to build empathy in the RUclips viewer with you for the characters. • @chris...9497
    @chris...9497 Год назад +1

Average age of a mouse in the wild is 1 year. Oldest recorded age of a mouse in captivity is 4 years.
Time passage between the events in 1935 and the end reveal in the 'present' is 64 years.
There's no way to compare, contrast, or extrapolate between a tamed mouse's lifespan and a man's, especially since the mouse is still living.
A UTI results in inflamed infected tissue starting in the bladder and extending on down through the ureter to the end of the urethra. It's uncomfortable all the way down that tube, but for some reason it's most painful in the urethra, where either/both the movement or the heat causes extreme burning. It's painful even for women (BELIEVE ME!), but it's more painful for men, as the urethra is in contact with all those hundreds of thousands extra-sensitive nerve endings that ordinarily transmit pleasure.
When you have a UTI, you avoid urination as much as you can, but you can't. And what causes it does not go away; it's an increasing infection, so eventually must be treated. Paul puts it off because he 'knows'; he's had UTI's before. In 1935, we didn't have many of the antibiotics we have today, and few of the ones they had they didn't think to use on UTI's. So Paul does say the doctor will just give him sulfa drugs, which will give him terrible nausea and make him vomit before he can get from office to WC. Being affected like that while guarding the condemned is unsafe for the guard, the prisoners, fellow guards, and possibly the public.
Apart from the issue of demonstrated disrespect in both instances, spit/saliva always - ALWAYS - contains infectious elements. Urine is sterile. I agree; urine is preferable over spitting.
Padding the walls is to minimize bruising and injury, as the prisoner can run at the wall or bang his head against it. Much harder to get much force behind pounding head or body part against the floor; there's the awkward position of having to stoop to reach the floor, there's reduced 'launch space' to work up force, but also there's the restraint caused by the straitjacket. And most things coming in contact with the floor will be covered by clothing, providing some incidental padding.
Finally, padded flooring would absorb and hold spit, blood, urine, feces, and vomit; it would become contaminated with bodily fluids and would be difficult to properly clean. It would remain infectious and could even rot or mould. Clear floors make it easier to clean should anything fall or drip onto it.
"Mouseville; tourist attraction down in Florida" puts me in mind of a childhood memory, though I understand the guards are just trying to calm Del's anxieties.
When I lived in Florida, there was a time we went to a roadside ice cream stand. They had a painted deep crate with a wire mesh on top, near the ordering windows. it had a sign on it that read "Baby Rattlers". Florida is home to all 4 species of poisonous US snakes, including rattlesnakes, so this looked interesting. I peaked inside...it was a pile of pastel pink/blue/yellow rattles for amusing babies.

Great reaction... I mean, its kinda hard to say for a movie like this but 😬, You get what I'm trying to say 😅. Please please please, I beg of you, if you need a comedy to lighten the mood after this, please consider watching a Wayans brother classic called, "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka".

You need to get a microphone closer to your mouths so we can hear you!!! There's no use for us to watch this video if we can't hear you.

Oh, I'm so sorry about that. I suppose I didn't think it was too bad but in any case I've actually got some coming.

Only noticed this during editing. It is a loud A/C unit. Will fine tune that 👍🏾

I love, love your reactions! I was just wondering if you've ever reacted to older films around the 50's-60s? The films that I'm talking about are Wait Until Dark (1967), The Nanny (1965), and Whatever Happened to Baby Jane (1962). They are more like suspense thrillers and will have you on the edge of your seat. If you watch Wait Until Dark, that's a movie that should be watched with the lights off.

A masterpiece of a film. Stand by me and shawshank redemption are two other Stephen king books that were made into excellent movies.
