I apologize in advance for my emotional breakdown during Clang's guitar solo (about 29:11). I was tempted to re-record that part, but ... this is what happened. Thanks everyone for understanding.
Same thing happens to me in Alone and Daydreaming. There is something about how Kanami leads you into her solos that makes me get wound up, and then when Kanami begins the solo, it's like all the tension is released into a glorious tidal wave into a calm wading pool.
I remember when I finally received my WD disc and started listening to it, I had a similar experience. Amazing & moving compositions, riffs, instrumental work, vocal harmonies, etc. I played it over and over, listening to the different parts and their role in the whole. As a classical music lover, I felt at times like I was parsing out a Bach fugue or something. Which doesn't surprise me since Kanami has the sort of background and imagination to come with these ideas.
I'm convinced Kanami could have been a world-shaking classical composer, had she been born in a different time period (and had Japan not been so isolated from the West during those days, and if women had had a greater role). Lot of ifs, I suppose. But I'm overjoyed that she was born in MY time. :-)
So many great bangers from Band-Maid with no videos. So glad you are presenting Band-Maid non-video songs to show the depth of this band. I can't encourage fans enough to purchase all their offerings to not only support the Maids but to listen to great songs you'll never hear without videos. These girls are very special and at 67yo seeing the best Rock bands ever, Band-Maid is right there with the best of all times and more. Thanks Chan for your efforts.
Thank you for watching! I remember when many groups/artists would release albums consisting entirely of ONE popular single and a dozen flops; you'd be a fool to buy those albums (and I did buy a handful of them). Band-Maid is the opposite, as far as I can tell. Every song is so good that it would be difficult to choose which ones to make videos for. And yes, I totally agree that fans should buy the albums (or at the very least sift through the audio release section of the official YT channel; I think 98% of their songs are on here).
"Rock in me" is still my favorite Miku song, it's so much fun and just makes me happy. Because yes, music should make you happy! 🙂 "Clang" has always been a top 10 Band-Maid song for me, my favorite from the "World Domination" album. It has everything I like most from Band-Maid. Fast, driving, high energetic song and quite heavy. And Akane is going nuts! 🤘🏻🙂
"It has everything I like most from Band-Maid" -- exactly. THIS is why I showed up, hat in hand, begging for better hard rock. And they delivered more than I dared ask for.
In hindsight, I don't know if I've heard anyone list it. But it's definitely in my list (currently at number one on my Spotify ranked playlist, but no guarantees as I continue through this catalog...)
I simply don't have the capacity to understand why Clang isn't one of their most listened to songs (other than not having a video).

I went through some tough time when this album came out in 2018. Looked up the lyrics of Clang and it became a song i listened every day. Check out the two choruses: Chorus #1 even though just alone just be strong just go forward go ahead! Chorus #2 just be eager just demand for it just wish for it to get live!
I totally understand! Even without translation, just the "be getting started" and "hang in there" are food for my soul. (Last year, I think I listened to "Be OK" at least 200 times over the course of several months, for similar reasons.)
Always enjoyed listening to Band-Maid with you! I’m sure that Kanami wants reactions like you felt with Clang’s. She understands that music should do that and she works hard at creating that listen experience for us fans. I thank her for that hard work. And “Rock in me” is my favorite Miku song especially from the Yokohama concert.. Thanks again and looking forward to our next listening session. 🤘🕊️🦍🥷👸🏻👀PO!
Thank you. I guess, in a sense, all music/art is *intended* to evoke an emotional reaction of sorts. But due to many years of cynicism and getting so jaded I sometimes feel nothing at the most horrible/awesome things, it's rare these days that any music hits me so hard. :-) Keep it coming, Kanami! I can take it. (Maybe.)
Thanks again for your efforts. Your format is also getting me to pay closer attention to their songs. It is true, the more you pay attention, the more you discover all the wonderful little things they put into their songs.
True. !! I do not have a musical ear. But something kept drawing back to BandMaid. I didn't know why. Chan does a excellent job at explaining why BandMaid is different. I'll go back and listen to the original track and look for those things Chan mentioned.
I do wish I had a bit more musical knowledge (like a Wave Potter but with less ability to grow a beard) so I could truly explain/understand some of that stuff I'm hearing. But it IS fascinating to hear it. :-)
Four solid songs, the Maids just don't put out bad ones. I agree with you that Clang is the most interesting--Akane's double pedal rolling along and some great guitar work by Mincho. Thanks again for a fun review and I'm looking forward to the next ones.
Thank you again for the great Band Maid review! @9:02 I believe your hearing a cymbal chime *iirc* , it's when you hit the cymbal dead center on the raised *bulb* where the is connected to the stand. It's a great accent sound. 🥁 🎀🤘❤🔥🤘🎀
The Yokohama arena live version of "Rock in me" with Miku bouncing all around the circular walkway is a delight to the eyes and ears. Wish that was up on YT.
Oh, I'd love to see it. I did watch a couple of fancams of it and she's just a delight on stage. I think someone who can't smile back at her is dead inside.
@@Chan_Fry Short version of a long story. I'd thought my Blu-ray and DVD copies of the Yokohama concert were lost in the mail and so ordered them again. All arrived. If there is any way I could send you one I would be more than happy to do so. Your reviews have given me much pleasure and I'd love to repay this way.
Until someone else pointed it out below, I didn't even think of the "Rock in me" background vocals, which must have been Kanami. I was just impressed with (1) Miku's absolute killer lead vocals, and (2) her best-in-the-world bandmates. Next time I'll pay more attention. :-)
For me, "Rock in me" is my favorite of these four - "just go now, as one likes" hits me hard, maybe because I spend too much time worrying about what others think. I'm trying to take Miku's advice and follow her example when I can. As you know, I'm pretty much anti-religion, but I could very easily be sucked into a belief system based on Kobato-san.
I think I struggle to find the balance between thinking too much about what others expect (which can make me seem like a doormat), and not thinking enough about it (which can make one seem like an a-hole). But yes, when it comes to one's passions, dreams, goals, etc., "just go now -- as one likes" is excellent advice. :-)
Chan, thanks for your reaction to "Fate", "Spirit" , and "Clang". I forgot how cool "Fate" was. I love that grungy hard rock sound they produced for it. It's also a great audience participation song. "Spirit" is another great fast-paced song that keeps your attention moving with courses. Kanami's underplay back Saiki's vocals are awesome, but with encouragement from Akane's double bass pedals the song really takes off. "Clang" has always been one of my favorite Band-Maid song. A past video of MISA and Kanami doing a "finger-tapping" conversation/duel at one of their concerts in a small venue shot by Vladimir Chupin is my favorite.
After editing this video, I moved "Clang" up my list to Number One (but it's a moving target; really anything in my Top Ten could be considered "number one" on a different day). I'll look for the Chupin video you mentioned... Thanks!
@@Chan_Fry Here is a link to one of my favorite Vladimir Chupin video from Hamburg,Germany ruclips.net/video/RxmRiWHZ3TI/видео.html , I think this is the correct link for "Clang" ruclips.net/video/yWGuBX7q0aA/видео.html , I know fan cams are not the best for sound and video, but Vladimir does a pretty good job and this was shot in a "hole in the wall" venue with a very small stag, Band Maid still killed it! I think this was shot in 2019?
Hey Chan, great review! And, no need to apologize, I usually tend to just blame it on Band-Maid (or onion ninjas, lol). BTW, I think Akane was hitting the bell of her ride cymbal in "Fate". She and Kanami had discussed this in "Chemical Reaction", from the "Unseen World" album. Akane suggested using the ride, but Kanami insisted on the cowbell, for it's distinctive sound.
Ah! I clearly still don't know all the possible parts of a drum kit. :-) I just remembered the cowbell sound from the Will Ferrell sketch many years ago and now I always notice anything that sounds remotely like it. :-)
Kanami has said she approaches the Miku songs differently, tuning them to Miku's strengths, but challenging Miku to stretch and improve. It sure works to me!
It certainly sounds like that's what Kanami does. Because I can't imagine Saiki singing this song (like I can't imagine Miku taking lead on "Fate" or "I can't live without you" -- just doesn't work).
I think "Fate" is pretty unique among their catalogue. Kind of a down-tempo stomp. Setlist FM says they've only played it live 3 times. Once is on one of their 2018 DVDs and it had a pretty big effect on the momentum of the show, which might have something to do with it being played so rarely. With "Spirit!!" I think we're getting into Band-Maid becoming their fully formed selves. That outro solo is brilliant! "Rock In Me" is kind of sneaky-brilliant. It's so easy to surf along Miku's voice and the singsong melody but it's like the earth is fracturing underneath. I have no idea how they put everything they did into this song that at the same time sounds like pop fans would love it. "Clang" has literally my favourite riff of all time. Top 10 for me too. I'm glad you left in your reaction. "I thought this reminded me of something else, but maybe it just reminded me of what I wanted music to sound like all along." This is brilliant! Have a great, Band-Maid day!
"Fate... down-tempo" -- I guess it does have a lower BPM, now that you mention it. (But, recently I went back through a bunch of older rock songs and a TON of them were slower than I remembered. Like "Pour Some Sugar On Me", for example -- I had forgotten that it's nearly a ballad as far as speed goes.) "Spirit!!" -- I liked it even more when I was editing this video, and now I snuck it into my top ten. "Rock in me" -- I remembered Miku's bouncy lead and had no idea the foundation would be so sturdy/powerful. I think my memory was fooled by the clapping and organ (?) in the intro. It's brilliant. As for my "brilliant" saying: thanks! Once in a while I can turn a phrase. :-)
There used to be an official live video of "Rock In Me" (from the 2018 Zepp Tokyo Okyuji) on their channel, but sadly it was removed a couple of years ago.
Well said. Sometimes when listening to them with my eyes closed, I become convinced that we're in a simulation (or some other spiritual plane that I don't believe in) because could a band be THIS good in real life?
Yes! I don't know what that bouncy style is called, but it does very much fit that aesthetic (though "Rock in me" is still harder driving, and more complex; it still manages to bounce and swing). :-)
Assuming you haven't seen the 10th Anniversary Finale in Yokohama, it's pretty much a must watch. Obviously it's supposed to be paywalled, so you couldn't really ethically do it on this channel, but maybe when you come to the end of this journey, just give it a watch for yourself (regardless of how you choose to source it). If nothing else it feels like a cathartic capstone to their career thus far. Anyway relevant to this video, the version of Rock In Me that they play during that concert is something special.
I do look forward to sifting through all the paywalled stuff one of these days. (But I want to make sure I have some free time ahead of me before I start *that* journey.) :-)
Ah, I didn't even think of that... Without Miku to sing backup, I guess Kanami is next on the list. :-) Maybe I'll see that in a video one of these days... (Or, better yet, in person when they eventually decide to return to Texas.)
I apologize in advance for my emotional breakdown during Clang's guitar solo (about 29:11). I was tempted to re-record that part, but ... this is what happened. Thanks everyone for understanding.
Band Maid specializes in bringing out the emotions, I'm glad you left it in 🙂
Nothing to apologize for. It’s a beautiful thing that music can move us like that. Thanks for sharing that moment with us.
Same thing happens to me in Alone and Daydreaming. There is something about how Kanami leads you into her solos that makes me get wound up, and then when Kanami begins the solo, it's like all the tension is released into a glorious tidal wave into a calm wading pool.
