It’s no wonder why Nintendo has been hesitant to make this new movie, they’ve really only done camios since the 90s. That side based on the trailer I have high hopes for the new movie.
Those cameos weren’t even cannon obviously since they weren’t from Miyamoto.
Well Nintendo has been hesitant to let anyone else touch thier IPs since the Zelda CDI games. Most of the stuff on this list are obviously parodies and ripoffs done without consent. I mean the Super Mario Bros live action movie discouraged another movie for almost 30 years.

Fun fact: in the Mario anime in 86, Mario was voice by Toru Furuya, the same guy who did yamcha in dragon ball
It would be quite interesting to see if Toru Furuya reprises the voice of Mario in a Japanese dub for the upcoming Mario movie. As of now, there’s no Japanese dub in the teaser trailer for the upcoming movie and when there is a Japanese version, it’s only the English voice acting with Japanese subtitles.

Why are people skeptical of Chris Pratt’s performance as Mario when the character’s voice has varied greatly over 40 years?
Because all the previous voice actors tried to make Mario sound unique. They put effort into their performance. Chris doesn't sound like he is trying. When I heard bowser talk, I was impressed that jack could change his voice a bit to make bowser sound unique and convincing.
It’s literally just Chris Pratt’s voice. For one, it doesn’t really feel very fitting for the character whatsoever. Also, it really seems like Chris Pratt didn’t try at all to make a Mario voice. He could’ve at the very least tried to give it a bit of a Brooklyn or Italian accent like pretty much every rendition of Mario since the 90’s. It’s so weird to see Mario speak with Chris Pratt’s straight American accent, in all honesty.
Really it’s only been in series outside of Nintendo’s control that have ever given him an accent.
The actual answer is because nobody likes Chris Pratt

I didn't even realize that Peter Cullen the same guy who voiced Optimus Prime did the Mario voice in the 1986 animated cartoon. My favorite probably Lou Albano I think he did a decent job.
The 1986 Mario movie is really good, and it's on RUclips in 4K btw.
I think the big city greens version sounded the most pleasant.

I’m glad you shared the history of Mario’s voices. You actually went further back than I did in my video. I love the original voice I heard which was Lou Albano’s voice. That’s the voice Chris is honoring in the movie.
Anything other than the screechy Italian stereotype voice that he's had since the N64 days. But yeah Captain Lou was actually a really, really good Mario. The show was insipid but he fit the character like a glove.

Because every Mario fan has seen the Super Mario Bros Super Show for sure. (Yes, that was sarcasm.)
But I don’t hate Chris Pratt as Mario because of the accent, Mario’s voice just sounds generic to me like a lot of stuff in the trailer. Not blaming Chris though. Nothing against the voice actors. If you like their voices, that’s fine.

I know as a fan I am judging too early, but the marketing team should have done better using a better scene that shines Chris's performances. Heh. I'm much rather seeing the French version instead if I hear Chris still sounding like Chris

I feel like you're not seeing what the criticism is about... its not about Mario not sounding like Charles Martinet. Its about Mario sounding too close to just Chris's normal speaking voice. Hell, he sounded like he was phoning it in. Mario is a video game icon as much as Mickey Mouse is in animation; hell would even raise within the fandom if Mickey does not have that iconic high pitch voice, so why cant Mario have the Italian/Brooklyn voice? In before people quick to dismiss this as a "troll" (stop plugging your fingers to your ears and go on to lalaland you child), it could be the director's fault for choosing a scene with a very poor mario performance.

What stupid logic. Mario was first being developed as a character he didn't have his iconic voice yet. Notice however in the 90s they start giving him a new-york Italian accent. So they're just then developing the voice

It’s interesting how before Mario64 all parodies/adaptations used a Brooklyn accent and then after Mario64 all parodies/adaptations started using an Italian accent, but now for the new movie they’re going back to the Brooklyn thing.

Please note that Super Mario 64 came out in 1996 which was the very first time we actually ever hear Mario speak in a video game technically. So can people stop complaining about Chris Pratt doing a New York City accent.
There was a game called "Marios game gallery" that came out in 1995 and we could heat Marios voice we know today
So technically, Marios game gallery is the 1st game that we could hear Mario from Charles Martinet

There was a reference to Mario in Bojack Horseman. I think it was the episodes where he was in rehab, there was a guy named Mario who wore blue overalls and a red shirt, and had an Italian accent. I think he had a mustache too and was pretty much just Mario withoit his hat.
Edit: actually I looked it up; he wasn't named Mario, but he was in character because he was playing Mario in a movie. You can see his poster later in the series

There was also a cameo of Mario in teen titans go it was in a honors themed episode and you can see skeletons with Mario and Luigi hats (also there was an episode with milk mustaches and robin made a Mario milk mustache)
I still don't know how to think about Chris Pratt voicing Mario. If Charles Martinett was going to be in the movie in the first place, why didn't he voice Mario?
It would exhaust, and hurt his voice if he speaks as Mario in the entire film.

Mario's voice was developing at a time and so are the mario lore as new games releasing until Charles Martinet made the iconic Italian speaking Mario. Tbh, one of my favourite Mario voice variant is the Italian American one from Super Mario Bros Super Show. As for Pratt, disappointed in his performance in the trailer but still optimistic.

This video also highlights how other characters like Pauline and Toadstool have changed over the years. Thinking about it some more, both Zelda and Samas have undergone similar changes. In the games all started as redheads and eventually three became blonde and one brunette.
