Finney’s understanding of Scripture seems to fit well with those in the last 100 years who claim church growth and indeed, individual growth can be acquired if you only develop and follow the “right” program.

The history of Charles Finney is very interesting. His greatest revival was right here in my hometown of Rochester, NY. in the early 1800's. From a human perspective it would seem he was a great success; a very charismatic preacher that mentioned hell and judgment and the need to repent and believe in Christ. On the surface you hear this and it would seem there was nothing wrong. However, Finney's actual understanding of core doctrines seem to call into question his true understanding of salvation. Though he mentioned sin, I'm unsure he understand the total depravity of it (Romans 3:9-20, Ephesians 2:1-3, Jeremiah 17:9, 1 John 3:4, etc.) to the point where he thought pragmatism was the way to go. He also didn't think revival was supernatural, but man-initiated, basically not believing the gospel was the power of God (Romans 1:16), but his own persuasive words.
Finney didn't invent the altar call methods of today, but he certainly was the grand promoter of it in such a way that many of his methods are still popular today. If I'm not mistaken, even Finney himself would come back to some of the places he had "revivals" and find none of the "decisions" stuck. Because of his outward "success," Finney is hailed as the greatest evangelist of his time, but it isn't about the evangelist or the "decisions," it's about God saving a soul supernaturally through the preaching of the gospel. Finney's methods, at the end of the day, seem to contradict the Apostle Paul's words in 1 Corinthians 2:1-2.

Yes l will agree mr nash and others were key to the power of Holy Spirit out pouring in these revivals....
There were other important keys that were instrumental
When Finney put the emphasis on the individual for his sin and which through the power of Holy Spirit brought deep conviction and deep repentance which was followed up with a Baptism of the Holy Spirit this brought a total transformation which lasted in many who received this..!
Prayer is so important but also the real truth must be preached...

Charles Finney denied that mankind has a sinful nature inherited from Adam. Rather, Finney said, our sinfulness is the result of moral choices made by each individual. Christ’s death on the cross, according to Finney, was not a payment for sin as much as it was a demonstration that God was serious about keeping the Law. The reformation of a person’s morality is the essence of Christianity, according to Finney. It is the sinner who is RESPONSIBLE for his OWN REGENERATION, THIS CONTRADICTS CHRIST DISCOURSE WITH NICODEMUS. YOU MUST BE BORN FROM ABOVE.
      Charles Finney Systematic Theology
Finney said; while the Holy Spirit influences the decision, the choice to be saved is always man’s: “The sinner actually changes, and is therefore himself, in the most proper sense, the author of the change” (“Sinners Bound to Change,” 21-22).
Charles Finney is also well-known for teaching the doctrine of Christian perfection or sinless perfection. This doctrine is based on Matthew 5:48 where Jesus says, “Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” Finney’s sermons on perfection make the argument that God would not ask us to be perfect were it not possible for us to attain perfection. He is careful to delineate the difference between what he calls natural perfection, or God’s “nature, essence, or constitution,” and moral perfection, which is “perfect obedience to the law of God.” Charles Finney declared that “the law of God requires perfect, disinterested, impartial benevolence, love to God and love to our neighbor. It requires that we should be actuated by the same feeling, and to act on the same principles that God acts upon; to leave self out of the question as uniformly as he does, to be as much separated from selfishness as he is; in a word, to be in our measure as perfect as God is. Christianity requires that we should do neither more nor less than the law of God prescribes” (Lectures to Professing Christians, Lecture 19)
      .Charles Finney Systematic Theology - Lecture 19 - B
      www.godrules.net/library/systematic/systematic19b.htm
Charles Finney’s logic on the subject of Christian perfection seems, at first glance, air-tight. He used reason and the Bible to show how Christian perfection is attainable, necessary, and required by God. But the practical application of this doctrine proves to be trickier than understanding it. Finney himself admitted that there is a “desperate unwillingness” to obey.
According to Finney, only when we are truly willing to give up all sin, yielding absolutely to God’s will, can we be “filled with the fullness of God.” But he also maintained that, even when Christians desire this perfection and pray for perfection “with agony,” they may still only think themselves willing to be perfect and may indeed be deceiving themselves as to their true motive.
Was Charles Finney correct? Does God really require us to be perfect before we can have full fellowship with Him?
The answer lies in understanding Christ’s role in our lives. During the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus also said, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them” (verse 17). Paul also says that “the law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith” (Galatians 3:24). This means that the Law showed us our inability to be perfect and therefore our need for Christ. Only when we are honest with ourselves can we begin to make progress as believers, and part of that honesty is to admit that we are fallen and in desperate need of Christ’s righteousness. “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:8-9).
Charles Finney recommended that, once saved, people should strive to attain perfection, which they could attain in this life with God’s help. But the Bible makes it clear that the only perfection we can gain was given to us on the cross. We are not only justified but also sanctified by the offering of Christ (Hebrews 10:10). Faith is what saves us and what changes us. Living water flows from the hearts of those who know their need, feel their thirst, and believe totally in God’s power to provide (John 7:37-39).
Charles Finney is sometimes called “the father of modern revivalism,” and his impact on Christianity and American society in the 19th century is profound. His books, Lectures on Revivals of Religion (1835) and Lectures on Systematic Theology (1846) were widely circulated and read.
He did a great deal of harm to the gospel . His teaching is still a plague in the church today. Before one endorses a church doctrine, one should do a background check on the origin of the doctrine. In most cases it comes from the Finney doctrine in some form

Titus 1:9 Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers
To rebuke someone is to criticize him or her sharply. The Greek word most often translated “rebuke” in the New Testament is elegchó. In its fullest sense, elegchó means “to reprimand and convict by exposing (sometimes publicly) a wrong.” There are times when all of us need to be rebuked, and there are times when a believer needs to rebuke another believer.
We normally think of a rebuke in a negative sense, but Proverbs 27:5-6 says, “Better is open rebuke than hidden love. Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.” Paul instructs Titus, as an overseer of the church, to “speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority” (Titus 2:15), implying that all three activities are of equal importance. We know we should always encourage each other and speak the truth (1 Thessalonians 5:11; Ephesians 4:25), but how do we know when to rebuke another believer?
Scriptural rebuke begins in the heart. Before we confront anyone about anything, we should first examine our own motives. First Corinthians 16:14 says, “Let everything be done in love.” That includes rebuke. There is a right way and a wrong way to rebuke someone. Wrong rebuking stems from pride, anger, malice, jealousy, or another selfish attitude.

This is NOT a correct interpretation of Finny. Finny had prayer before conducting revivals. He waited upon God’s Holy Spirit t prepare the ground - the hearts of people - before he would go share the Gospel. Read Finny’s autobiography yourself. He often attacked because he was not a Calvinist. Very disappointing when people criticize and diminish the moving of God’s Spirit to bring about a revival and the winning of souls. Think about it - John the Baptist was not Ezra. Nehemiah was not Elijah. The Apostle Paul was not a Phillip. None of them were a Calvinist. God is His own Author. He will use every vessel He chooses according to His plan and His will for His glory. So God used Finny. What is really important? Praise God and give less attention to Finny. THOUSANDS of lives were reached and gloriously saved by proclaiming the Gospel for Christ Jesus.. That IS supernatural - even Finny says so. A man of deep prayer.

Revival is man submitting to the work of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit was sent 2000 years ago and He never left. So more of Him isn’t going to come the lack is on man. But none of this fits into the cave of Calvinist doctrine. I read all about Finney, read his autobiography. He was against the Calvinist doctrine of predestination because He didn’t see it in the Bible and because it makes no sense that Jesus only died for some. Of course he was focused on evangelism, because he saw the need as great - as a Calvinist, no matter what you say, the need isn’t great because if God predestined someone they will be saved.
