How I wish I could hear it as it was preached. Charles Finney did not even use notes when he preached. He had been on his way to becoming a highly schooled lawyer. He was brilliant. His carefully structured sermons were completely preached without any hint of being "read".
How I wish I could hear his sermons read as if they were not being read.
But that is a rare gift indeed... to read without sounding like ink on paper.

Interesting that so many complainers/critics of Charles Finney, like John MacArthur, who try to indicate Finney presented a false gospel; as if Finney meant you are saved by your personal decision to give your heart to God. When you read his autobiography Finney hides nothing. He does stress that there is a need to be convicted of our sins AND truly repent. He does not say if people simply pray for forgiveness alone there is a true conversion, like some claim. Instead he emphasizes the Holy Spirit brings about conviction and the person must decide to seek forgiveness at that time and follow the gospel, doers of the Word, instead sitting in a church pew putting it off and never making that decision (and for that matter the lifetime of decisions during one's Christian life). Finney complained that Calvanist too often told people to wait on God for their conversion and did not urge people to submit to God now. Finney thought when people first believed in Jesus Christ they should repent and make a confession of Christ NOW BECAUSE there may be NO tomorrow. Calvinism of his era preached if you were one of God's elect well it will become evident - just wait - conversion will happen when God wants it to happen. Just wait . . .He believed in the urgency to win souls and when a person is convicted that they need to change their life so the decision should be reaped now - today is the day of salvation. Listen to Finery's sermons and you will realize his theology was not weak, he preached that people realize they needed to repent and live a holy life before God. Conversion comes by the cross and Jesus atoning blood - but that we must exercise our free will by surrendering to choose God on His terms (biblical) not our own (carnal).Finney never meant a person is saved by his/her decision alone, however, without that first decision there is no faith seed of salvation received into the heart. Excellent message by Finney that we must be doers of the Word, not hearers only. "I have decided to FOLLOW Jesus." Charles Finney was a man used by God no matter what the post-Calvanist writers try to say to make him a heretic. The Apostle Peter won over 3000 souls his' first preaching - it wasn't emotions that caused those saved to choose Christ, repent and be baptized in Jesus Name. Clearly it was the Holy Spirit igniting the Word of God in the hearts of the people - preaching repentance. John MacArthur suggests that Finney should have not preached right after his conversion. The hundreds and thousands saved at the result of his preaching was the product of "emotionalism." Get real! I wonder if John MacArthur would suggest that to Peter to wait a couple years after His actual conversion, or the 120 people at Pentecost. Enjoy Finney's preaching - he loved God and sought to save souls for our Lord Jesus Christ.

I enjoy Macarther but I agree with Finney in this sermon. Both believed there has to be an inward change performed by God to change a mans heart and mind. Any man who claims to be a Christian and exhibits no deliverance from.a sinful path has never had an encounter with the holy spirit. I believe they both would agree on that. Salvation is of the Lord and sanctification is a work of God. Human efforts could add nothing but self righteous works. But true saving faith will bring forth good works as God works through the believer.

Finney seemed to make a division for the sight (eyes which may see) for those whom are of the false thinking, or for those few whom leaned for the truth, and maybe did so in either part, only if not wholly so. Yet Finney never allowed his words with anyone thinking of any middle ground existing, and not without also pointing to Agape faith to be realized at conversion. "True and false converts", the same for repenting...well just about everything Finney laid out within his sermons made this division or implied such. Finney was also a "Doer of the Word" too!! Not seen so much these days. Finally Finney blamed any religious decline or Christian (conversion-walking out) decline as also moral decline and the preacher was to be held to account.

I am fully persuaded that my friend would have heard my views on "sabbath" and rejoiced in them. There is no Christian Sabbath, but there is a teaching we can glean from the Old Testament doctrine of the Sabbath. Just like God did not care for oxen, but wrote that law entirely for our benefit; that ministers should understand that they should, in fact, be partakers in what they labor in.
Finney would have accepted the truth that all days are, in fact, alike. That all days ought to be lived the way the Jews were to observe the sabbath. This is the day the Lord has made. Today is "The Lord's Day" in truth.

    2 Corinthians Chapter 11
13For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.
14And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
15Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.
Self deceivers sounds like what Paul the apostle told us in 2 Corinthians 11:13-15. Referring to those false apostles mentioned in verse 13 of 2 Corinthians chapter 11.

Charles Finney denied the atonement of Christ was enough. He was a rank heretic who had strange manifestations at his revivals, like people crowing like roosters and barking like dogs. This man was held up to me as a great man of God. He was not. He wanted to create his own religion. Go read what he said as a whole, not in part. Nothing good came from this man's revivals; he is the father of many false preachers today.

Carla here is Finney in his own words, "....I saw that His work was a finished work, and that instead of having or needing any righteousness of my own to recommend me to God, I had to submit to the righteousness of God through Christ. Gospel salvation seemed to be an offer to be accepting and that it was full and complete. All that was necessary on my part was my own consent to give up my sins and accept Christ. Salvation was not achieved by my own works, but was to be found entirely in the Lord Jesus Christ Who presented Himself before me as my God and my savior."
This is a direct quote of his in his own autobiography page 15. Carla your statement is a lie.

      Revelation 12:10
And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.
      Revelation 21:8
But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
Be very careful in accusing someone like that Carla, remember what is written in Revelation 21:8 about all liars shall have their part in the lake of fire.
