- Riding the 2023 Sherco 300SEF. These are the trails that inspired me to get a four stroke when I first rode them last year. This bike is so much fun on these open flowing trails.
* Please note I will not discuss locations publicly in the comments section.

This is absolutely the type of trail I would love to ride
A 2 stroke 300 for the lower mainland and a 4 stroke for the interior! What a great setup! Both overlap pretty well too.
Yes, some days it's hard to decide which one to take. Good problem to have though!
I dont see a real big difference riding the 300 4T vs chugging a Beta 300 2T thru that terrain. Both fun & excellent for it.
Japanese manufacturers need to take note:
300-400cc 4t, 6 speed, use a bore and stroke configuration that will resist flame out, forget CA regs, and of course put a big dose of Japanese reliability in the build. = Then sell millions😮
And at a reasonable cost...This Sherco he's riding would be $18k with destination, setup, tax, woods registration, and basic protection parts.
Japanese sure missed the boat on Enduro and SXS's didn't they!! 🤣. They had the first and then quit it all together🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
Can’t agree more about having the best of both worlds. I have a Beta 300RR for the single track, technical tight stuff and a Yamaha WR 450 for dual track and the trails where you can really crank it. Love em both!
Cheers, and thanks for another great video!
We gave up anything +50” wide.
WAY too many 2000#, 1000hp turbo’d Side-by-Sides here in Northern Mi. woods.
I’ll take my chances with a 6” dia. jackpine.
Yep, also enjoy a 4 stroke on flowing XC terrain. But for tight technical slow stuff the 2 stroke is king!
I run 300se for hard enduro and suspension valved really soft. Run 300sef faster harescramble riding suspension valving 20% stiffer. Perfect combo for my needs. Love having them both.
I can't argue with you, this is definitely 4T territory ... and you're making me want to ride 😁
My 06 Honda 250x is beyond legit. Setup perfect for tight hard single track enduro. But every time the haters say oh its slow, you need a TPI or TBI 2t. Hard pass I spent 2k on my Honda and maintenance is easy.
Always enjoy your vids, please keep them coming.
Thanks and will do!
I think about getting a 4 stroke occasionally but I'm sticking with my 2smoke , its so simple.
I'm still a 2 stroke guy at heart but it's sure nice having both!
2 strokes only for me. Looking to upgrade from my 97 YZ285 to a 2024 KTM 300 XC TBI or Husky TX300 TBI. Some of us can’t afford 2 bikes. Just sayin
@@stevedouglas1654 My KTM XCW 300 is a 2011 and it's sweet ! your bike doesn't have to be new to have fun.
@Steve Douglas I hear you. Bikes are very expensive these days. It took me years to be able to have two.
@@ExploringCabinsandMines just want a new bike with e start and fuel injection. My current bike is about 26 years old
Certainly more relaxing to ride than the gnar I usually see you do. Wish there was something more like this in Ontario. It's either tight single track or double track and 20 feet in elevation change is a good ride!
I've been to Ontario a few times, it's always strange to me to look in every direction and not see a mountain.
KTM 200's are my Jam for this stuff, my '22 YZ250F would be fine, but not be as joyful, for me.
BTW, the STIC carb metering replacement block in my 200SX allows the option for exceptional short shifting. So it has more options than stock. No other engine mods needed.
really like the areas your riding in and would like to know were (this is why i bought a four stroke was filmed) i dont beleive it was mentioned in the video, and yes having the both a 2 and 4 stroke is nice, deffinitly interested in Sherco, thanks Mike
Beautiful terrain! It may be a little dry, but looks normal to me with my Arizona eyes. I love to have a two stroke and a 4 stroke. Got me a 17 TE300, and looking to get it a friend. Thinking 24 TE450. If anyone has experience with the new KDM/Husky I’d love to know. 👍
When you come back they built way more on the back side once I get it dialled we’ll have to go again!
Sounds good!
You never really specified exactly why you went to the four stroke. I switched from the KTM 300 to the KTM 350 xcf-w and one of the main reasons was I like the engine braking.
At the beginning, I mentioned this trail, and trails like it are why I bought a four stroke.
A big difference between the two is range to empty. I can go over 100 miles on the stock tank on my 2021 500 XCF-W. The 300 2T bikes see 50-60 miles to empty. This really matters if you like to explore new areas alone.
I have a Smartcarb on my two stroke so the range is a lot closer.
Awesome vid! What oil are you using for this bike?
Yep absolutely love my 500 XCW and my 300TX... I have been thinking about stepping it down to a 350 and letting the 500 go.... Thoughts?
You will really miss the 500. I have a 2021 XCF-W that weights less than my new 2024 TE 300. I ride the 500 in the tightest, steepest gnar here in the PNW and BC. Properly set up, it finds traction where the 300 struggles. The 500 is also plated, and by swapping the rear wheel with a dual sport spec wheel fitted with the appropriate tire and sprocket it handles 150 mile exploration days. The 350 is not as versatile: the lower gearing and higher revving engine makes it much less comfortable at higher speeds. The 500 also is very reliable and durable. Expect 800 hours out of the top end if you take care of it properly.
@@garthlundquist3623 Couldn't agree more. Have a 22 500 xcfw and a 21 TE 300. Found myself riding the 500 more and more even in rocky rooty slick technical terrain. Just sold my 300. The 500 is really a versital bike. Feels a little heavier but tractors through everything.
Greg, at the risk of offending you, I suggest that you watch other 4t's on this type of terrain. With todays modern, FI 4t's you don't need to do all that "2t blipping" that you are doing. With 4t's, you're on the throttle or on the brakes. I'm no pro by a long shot, but it took me 6 months of only a 4t to stop riding it like a 2t. One more thing, when coming into those tight turns,, use mor clutch and keep the throttle more consistent. It will make that great flow even flower.
Again, don't mean to criticize, only help a brother out.
Yep, years of riding 2 strokes 98% of the time, old habits die hard. I've only got a handful of rides on this bike but I'm learning!
Yep, mostly just set your "idle" with the throttle and modulate power with the clutch.
I just bought the same bike and am having the same problem. I'm riding like I am in the 300 2T, just been out twice but I think is going to be hard to get used to it. Specially when I have the other 2 stroke Shercos to ride
Two strokes are always trying to climb up on the pipe they don't like to hold a steady RPM no matter if they're carbureted fuel injected or what you do that's just the nature of the beast great for on-and-off throttle but for holding a steady RPM they suck
Nice Briggs and Stratton! 😏
Sherco 300 sef seems good for you. I couldn’t live with its lack of top end. Too much in mods to give it over rev. I’m considering a switch to one of betas 4t bikes. 350 or 390. I ride Colorado trails and race TX enduro. I should have multiple bikes but can’t right now.
I've ridden the Beta's. While the motors are good the handling is nowhere near as good as the Sherco imo. I know people that have the 450SEF rave about how good they are.
@@PNWEnduro just finished a demo day with beta. Sherco’s 300 ser with kyb is my current pick. Curious about the 24 te250 or 300 tho.
You don't truly understand the meaning of the word "envy" until you move to Phoenix valley and YT recommends you PNW riding videos...
You have some cool riding there as well. Totally different but still good stuff.
Don't have to keep rebuilding engine is a bonus for a start
2019 300 XC does it all. Lugs like a 4 stroke, but unstoppable 2 stroke power. Excellent single track & blasts through the flowy stuff. It's a goat & will climb a tree if you let it :)
Glad you like it. Some have gone from a 450 thumper to a Beta 200 2strk & are smoking their buddies everywhere but open rds... so what's a guy to do?
I guess just have one of each 🤷♂️
Love it. Also had my SEF out in the PNW woods this weekend. Fantastic time.
What tires do you like using? Stock Michelins for now?
IRC VE33S rear and VX30 front. The stock tires come off before I even ride the bike.
@@PNWEnduro Thanks. Trying to decide between the JX8 or go with the VE33S. I really liked the VE33S on my last bike...not sure the reduced life for the traction on the JX8 is worth it...
I think it is. The JX8 has significantly better grip, it’s what I run on my 2t. I use the ve33s on the 4t because I’m generally riding more open terrain on that bike.
2024 Sef300 has new engine
Yes, I've known about that coming for a while but did not want to wait until after summer to get a new bike.
You reckon this bike would be good for the slower technical stuff , or you think stalling , flame out may be an issue ? Great videos bud
I believe it's the best four stroke for that kind of riding. Since I have both I generally take my 2T out on those days though.
@@PNWEnduro I guess if like me who rides half an half an likes the ease an maintenance of the four stroke it’s great that this bike allows to mix the slow technical stuff with the more float single tracks , the 4t has come a long way
I dont like my 2022 yz250fx for any trails in the PNW forest. Prefer my old kdx.
Gear your 4 t right no problem on tight tech just a bit more weight
I put a GET Ecu, Rekluse and a 52 tooth on my 500 xcfw and have no issues.
those single tracks are home for 4t
I'd like a low strung 400 4t with Six Gears, and large oil capacity, with long services intervals built in mind. I don't like these modern, high strung, maintenance heavy race bikes that cost a fortune for rebuilds. No manufactures seems to have any desire to make such a bike, so two strokes only for me until that happens.
I agree...
I grew up on old school aircooled 4 strokes, my dad and I spent a lot of time fooling around with Honda 230's adding better suspension and brakes, more power etc... They're a little porky but they're an absolute weapon in tight PNW single track. I inherited his CRF250X last year and holy cow is that thing not amusing in tight single track. They make an auto clutch pretty much mandatory.
@@JMKady76 Yeah, that's the kinda bikes I'm talking about. One of my brothers ride a DRZ400, and that damn bike is ALMOST perfect. That engine, with a 6th gear, more modern frame, and I guess EFI if we have to, would be PERFECT for a 4t platform.
Damn things a tractor, and he lugs it through single track like no tomorrow.
Drz400 man
@@russphillips3732 As I said in another comment, the Drz is SO close. An extra gear, and a modern lighter frame, would make that perfect in my eyes.
I've seen my brother do some gnarly shit on his DRZ with the freaking supermoto tires on it. He's a beast.
No toe curling scream, youve crossed to thedark side
What brand / model of handlebar bag do you have?
@trailbound.co it's the smaller of the two they offer.
Do you ever ride southern oregon area?
Not yet.
both are great bike we suck most the time , but four strokes flame out too easy and for me a single track ride hard Enduro stuff better a two stroke lighter and don’t get too hot also cheaper too fix when something get bad .
I use DaVinci Resolve. The free version is super powerful.
I tried it. It's so different than Adobe Premiere Elements it's a big learning curve to adjust to.
@@PNWEnduro but so worth it... With RUclips as your mentor, you will never get stuck.
Man i am jelous of the trail access. There isnt anything near where we live.
We are spoiled here, especially this time of year when the mountain stuff starts to open up.
I’ve brought a beta 390 for the faster stuff
I tought he was going to tell us why he got 4 stroke?
Is this in BC? Or south of the border?
I don't discuss locations publicly for several reasons.
@@PNWEnduro fair. Figured I was vague enough for it not to matter.
@Cliff you can always reach out to me on social media for info.
Would prefer chapters to hear your opinion rather than a bunch of aimless riding with comments every so often repeating the same phrase.
I make videos for people that enjoy the content and the trails I ride, not for short attention spans. I'm not a fan of the RUclips chapters function.
