I'm 74 now and live in Tibshelf but l was born and bred in Sutton in Ashfield, l remember the railways and stations fondly,we got the train regularly to Skeggy,Cleethorpes etc.Happy memories.
Absolutely loving this along with the historic footage by Ian Halfpenny. Yep, that was our playground in Sutton as kids. I moved abroad 30 years ago so lots I dont recognise but great to see our old junior school and the back of the houses on our street. We played in all those station buildings and the disused staircase up to the ticket office was very atmospheric and not in a good way. 🙄 A Mr Madison lived in the station masters house, grumpy character with a big white beard. Not sure was he the station master or not. Thanks for this Gareth and Phil, opened a flood of memories and stories.
Thanks, mate. I would love to restore that station house. Really hope someone with a few quid does one day. Sadly it will probably end up as a car park or something.
I believe that I am related to Ian Halfpenny..my dad's mum was a Halfpenny from Teversal and my uncle played in Teversal welfare band which was run by a Halfpenny..not sure if it was Ian or not..
That was awesome 😎 Great job guys. The line going through SiA did my head in , I never knew it was in a cutting and the Ian Halfpenny footage showed my son's primary school right above it. That footage is golden and quite sad too. Never ever thought about that wall being part of the ticket office, I guess like everyone else, it just gets driven passed without a second thought. Anyway, you always wanted a station master's house.... a second RUclips channel in the making, a bit of paint it'll be as good as new 😂😂
That too was my playground , aralia 1601 is my sister no less . The water tower shown in the old pics at the Sutton Station was one of our dens . I actually still have the iron ladder that was inside the tank ! I crawled through the hollow stem of the tower with a steel cable to assist the scrap men to load it with a crane .I would be about 11 at the time .. what health and safety ! Great walk , thanks lads , great memories
It is now in the garden , using it at the moment to put a wildlife camera up to try and catch footage of a barn owl using the box I put up 5 years ago . I also have somewhere an etched LMS acid bottle with stopper I found on the platform …
If you go where 3 lines cross near Abacus there was the penny emma line crossing the 2 other lines Plus a Hump back road bridge .the lines were on 3 levels plus the hump back bridge to the lamp post factory.
Interesting info..the old Sutton station build when it was demolished.the stone was bought I believe by a gentleman who lived in Hilcote to build his house..I can't confirm this but I've lived in holy years and an old neighbour told me the story..
Hi mate..I'm in the Hilcote arms and I've just had a conversation with our local councillor who has lived here a lot longer than me and he confirmed to me the house I told you about is built from stone from the old Sutton station buildings..

My old infant school playground backed on to the Nottingham to Grantham line so as a young lad there were plenty of distractions!
Excellent...

Thanks mate. It was an incredible line and a real pity its life was so short. I would love that house. Bit out my budget, mind!

What an awesome story. Where do you have the ladder? In the garden?

Next time I drive through Hilcote, I'll look out for the brickwork!
@@IckeWalks the house is the last one on the left as you leave Hilcote on new lane on the corner where the old railway ran across towards Newton
Thanks mate. I walked up the little path once looking for remains, but nothing. @@russcaunt453
They probably did a good job of clearing out..maybe because it is now open farmland..
