Have you tried Astroflux? That game's been around since about 2005 and it is by far the best top down retro space shooter. The game is addictive and awesome in every way and I'd love to see you try it out if you haven't already.
It's a tragic interpretation of the original, shallow and compromised by ideologies of other lesser more modern games. It's namesake was intriguing, this is just boring.

I played this game few years ago, and it was already fun back then! Im glad to see it still in development.
I like how research projects have minimum times so you can't rush tech!
