      Precisely. My mum had her eyes done after waiting over 50 years. I just couldn't get used to it ,& strangely was afraid of her at first. She never wore them again and was extremely happy about it as she had 20/20 vision, bless her 😊

      James is actually very wrong with the average math. If you have a population of 10 people where 9 of them have an intelligence of 10, and 1 single person with an intelligence of 0. In this case. The average will be 9. Which in turn will mean 90% of the population wil be above average and only 10% will be below average.

    Just to be mathematically pedantic - 50% are below and above the MEDIAN value, not the average value. Data is often skewed resulting in a skewed average.

Of course it isn't, nothing is, thats the point of an average. I could take the 100 smartest people in the world and go "half of these are below average in this group, therefore its not a smart group", the argument makes no sense at all. The UK is certainly above average in intelligence on a world wide average, with some of the best unis and most skilled jobs. The caller is right, and you and James are wrong :) if anyone's in this famous 49.9% its you buddy.

      @@roryvandenberg3710 depending which average you're using the average doesn't have to be the mid point. When people say average they are usually talking about the mean. Using this average it is very possible for fewer than half of the population to be below average intelligence.
      The median is the mid point but people rarely refer to that just as the average.

    On the first one, unfortunately James is wrong and the caller is right. We cannot assume that the distribution of "intelligence" (whether that can even be measured is another topic) in the UK population is perfectly symmetrical like an ideal bell curve. It may be the case that 70% of the population is below "average intelligence".
    If James had said "median intelligence" then he would have been right.
    Sorry James!

      @@borandiUKSounds like you need to attend in the first place. 50% is half of something, not an average. The average of something can fall anywhere within the relevant spectrum (e.g. IQ levels). To apply 50% as an average to anything makes no sense whatsoever. No wonder James wasn’t terribly confident.

Of course it isn't, nothing is, thats the point of an average. I could take the 100 smartest people in the world and go "half of these are below average in this group, therefore its not a smart group", the argument makes no sense at all. The UK is certainly above average in intelligence on a world wide average, with some of the best unis and most skilled jobs. The caller is right, and you and James are wrong :)

    The IQ/Average intelligence thing actually is wrong. It's the average intelligence of measured people that it relates to.... So the majority of a single country COULD be above or below that line. Likewise a big shift in intelligence could bring someone of above average intelligence down to below average over time

      Data can be analysed in many ways. He's saying if you take the UK population and take the median value as the average then almost half will be above or below the average value. Completely depends how you calculate the average. It's not hard to understand.

    The below average statistic was really, really mean, funny but mean. Not everyone understands statistics or numbers in general. I never patronised or bullied people below senior management level when I was an auditor. I simply asked questions. I saved my 'power' for those who were paid well and were meant to understand and have broad shoulders. Be kind.

    1:13 he is just wrong on this call. It isn't true that 50% is necessarily below avg intelligence. The maths doesn't work this way. Proof if you have 10 people, and you can multiply by any figure, if one person has IQ of 200, 4 150 and 1 140, then 50 aren't below the mean avg.

    The fact that nobody notices James first argument makes no sense worries me. The caller states the UK is an intelligent country, to which James replies "half the population is below average intelligence, so it can't be an intelligent country". Imagine I took every Olympic sprinter and said "half of these sprinters are below average speed within this group, so they can't be that fast". It makes literally no sense. Instead everyone in the comments laughs at the caller saying he is the one below average intelligence. By James logic, every country is equally as smart, because they all have half their populations above average intelligence and half below. Guy is clueless and clearly most the listeners are as well.

    Many more than half of people are below average income, so the same could be true of intelligence. The mean of a distribution is not always its median. This is a common mistake and one James is repeating here.

    Your maths was actually wrong. The average number of people is 50 but their intelligence could be higher or lower.
    If 100 people took a test and 70 achieved 70% in the test while 30 got 30% the average (Mean) intelligence rate would be 58%
    The median ( middle) number of people is 50
    The Mode ( most common) of intelligence is 70%
    Your mixing up your sums mate.
