Vrbo: Pros and cons of vacation rentals

    This video discusses our experiences with Vrbo, a vacation rental website where property owners can list their home for rent and where travelers can book a stay in a home away from home. While we have most often used Vrbo for Florida vacations, their site has over 2 millions vacation homes for rent at locations all around the world. We show you the home we stayed in on our most recent rental in the Orlando area and discuss our experiences booking through Vrbo.
    Do you like the home you see in this video? We enjoyed our stay there. You can check it out for yourself if you think you may be interested. You can do a Google search for Vrbo property # 912196ha to find the listing.
    We are not affiliated with Vrbo nor have we been compensated in any way for this review. We have used their site to book several vacation home rentals over the years for which we paid full price. In this video, we share our honest opinion about our experiences - what we enjoyed and a few things to look out for. Since Vrbo is a broker for home owners renting their property, your experience may vary.

    Time and location was problem for renting our Vrbo, unfortunately. Rental manager knew how to word description of site precisely so we had no other option. Unsafe, disgusting, etc. Vrbo's rep is important so company should visit site before allowing it to be rented.

    As a frequent Airbnb user I have considered also trying vrbo as well! Most of the time we stay in private apartments but we have stayed in shared spaces before and it’s not too bad (you definitely want to read all the reviews before booking). It’s unfortunate that some vrbo homeowners didn’t refund the full amount. Airbnb is the same way with refunds.. you’re kind of in the hands of the homeowner. It looks like you guys rented yourself a nice home though! I love having my own personal pool!! 😄

    • @trvlnthru
      @trvlnthru  3 года назад

      Yes, it is so nice to have options when traveling. Coming home to a private pool and hot tub after a long day out sight seeing is wonderful! I am not really sure why we use Vrbo but haven't tried Airbnb yet. We compared the two when we rented our first vacation home a few years back and found one on Vrbo that we liked. So we have just kind of stuck with them. But yeah - I don't know if I could share spaces with strangers. I am sure there are really nice experiences out there to be had in shared spaces. But I just would feel pretty nervous about it. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Beware of VRBO, because they are a broker, they have no control if your host is terrible. Our rental had multiple issues that the host was unwilling to rectify and VRBO had no way to force them to fix the problems. They could not even force the host to send a cleaner to clean the food splatter all over the walls, dust all over every surface in the home and cigarette buts all over the patio. Air B and B is a better choice as they seem to hold owners accountable.

    • @trvlnthru
      @trvlnthru  2 года назад +1

      Thankfully, we have never had as bad an experience at a VRBO home as you describe. But you are correct - they are just acting as the broker for these homes and don't have any control over the hosts. They can kick the host off their site if they get enough complaints about them. But that isn't very helpful to a customer while they are actually on vacation. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    What a great and informative video for anyone trying to decide to stay in a home or hotel. You did a wonderful job explaining the differences and the process. We have stayed in vacation homes when we go to the gulf in Florida and have had great experiences with that. I have never used VRBO before, we have used Homeaway, I think. Thanks for sharing, nicely done! Having your own pool on vacation is the best part for me of the vacation home vs hotel.

    We always stay on property but we have done VRBO for other vacations. They are great. The ones near Disney are really nice and affordable. Gives the family the opportunity to spread out and even have a private pool. I love this video idea. For an owner to not give refunds when covid hit would be shady. I would think VRBO would remove them because it makes them look bad. Love that pool.

      It is unfortunate that some owners did not do the right thing when the pandemic hit. But we have had very good experiences so far. It does help to read the reviews to make sure other customers confirm that everything is as advertised. But we have enjoyed it. We do love staying on property too though. In fact, we just flew home from a quick trip where we stayed on property. Video coming soon. Thanks for watching!

    • @trvlnthru
      @trvlnthru  3 года назад

      Yes, there is certainly a point where this becomes a good option if you are traveling with friends or family. But when it is just the two of us, we usually just get a hotel room - about half the time on property and the other half off property. Depends on the circumstances of the trip. But if you are bringing people along with you, this is a great option.

    I love VRBO! I was using VRBO before AirBnb became so popular! Mostly because separate bedrooms is SO much better when we all have different sleeping schedules. and I love having some meals at the home to save $$, with the cleaning fees, it only makes financial sense when you are staying several days.

    • @trvlnthru
      @trvlnthru  3 года назад

      Agreed! That is a great point: With the cleaning fees and service fees, we only bother checking Vrbo if we are staying somewhere more than just 2 or 3 nights as the added cost on a short stay does not make sense financially. But we have found Vrbo to be a VERY economical choice on trips that last a week or longer. Thanks for watching and sharing your VRBO experiences in the comments!

    • @trvlnthru
      @trvlnthru  3 года назад

      Vrbo does have sites that offer discounts for monthly rentals. Look for rentals in the city where you want to stay and then click on the Filters. This button allows you to filter by price, number of bedrooms, etc. If you scroll all the way down through all the filter options, the bottom filter you can click on is weekly or monthly discounts. Click on monthly discounts to find which homes in the area offers a discount for lengthy stays. Tripping.com is a website that compares vacation rental prices including monthly rentals so they may be helpful too. Thanks for watching our video!

    • @trvlnthru
      @trvlnthru  2 года назад

      Hello. Thanks for watching! No - you would be renting the entire property. AirBnB does have a lot of places where you can just rent part of a house with the host still living in the house. But we would not feel comfortable doing that. So we only look for places where you rent the entire home. VRBO only has entire properties for rent and do not include any shared rentals where other people would stay with you.

      It is funny you ask that. We are kind of paranoid about cameras in rental homes. The Vrbo policy is that home owners have to disclose to renters if there are any cameras and where they are on property. We still usually look around to make sure there aren't any - though admittedly if they are hidden well, we might not see them. Thanks for the good question.

    • @trvlnthru

      Usually the property owner will work out arrival details by sending you a code to unlock the house or tell you where to get a key. Look for contact info for the owner if you don't already have information from the owner. The properties all have a check in time to allow time for cleaning between guests. But once you have that information from the owner, you are good to just go to the property on the day your rental period begins at check in time, yes. Thanks for watching!
