They also have to account for the ball breaking in a direction they are not expecting.
and_b 15 its always tailing from a pitchers throwing arm. Not that hard, especially in high school.

It's all about practice, tons of swings and at bats. When I was young, I struck out so much, that when I was in high school I worked every pitcher to on average 8 pitches. I knew that strike zone so well from failing so much that I got good at getting on base.
How to hit a major league baseball! "Only shows minor league clips"
The tital might be missleading but still pretty informative. Gonna show my 10 year old who is great at match but gets frustrated when he strikes out. He isnt the most athletic on his team and cant hit a deep ball yet, but he does have the best batting average. This could video could build his confidence.

It's true you can't think and hit
Really interesting topic, Joe. I think a neat parallel to this is in weapon-based martial arts. To survive even for a moment in melee combat it seems you have to be almost completely operating subconsciously, on instinct, developed over countless hours of practice and in-combat experience. It's almost like *thinking* would take so long you wouldn't survive.
You may be in Texas with the Round Rock Express, but that's clearly our hometown minor league heroes, the Carolina Mudcats you're repping on your helmet there.
Respect. :)

The more science develops the more we realize that genetics is a major factor in our lives. What you have is what you live with. And along with your environment it highly influences your decisions in life. Or maybe we dont have choices at all. Maybe free will is just an illusion and we would always do the same things in any alternative universe.
so basically, baseball player are bunch of robot.. got it.

This was great. I live in Brazil and still Baseball has always been my favorite sport (I've never even played it!).
Thanks for the video,Joe! I love how you can create a scientific explanation for everyday ideas that the majority of us don't think of. Your short explanations always get me interested. I was recently researching about a source of energy, powered by bacteria. But unfortunately, I could not find an understandable explanation. I was hoping that you might answer this question. Thanks
Alrodis Chapman of the New York Yankees (formerly Cincinatti Reds) fastball was clocked at 106 m.p.h. back in 2014.
Serena Williams serve in tennis was clocked at 138 m.p.h.
Martin Frk of the L.A. Kings slapshot was clocked at 109 m.p.h.
Am I the only one who has no idea what "20/13 vision" is?
+kiffe22 Put very simply (like, really, really simply):
It's when an object that is twenty feet away appears *to the viewer* as the object would at eight feet away to a person with average vision.
So, a person with 20/8 vision is able to more accurately read a vision chart at 20 feet than a person with 20/20 vision can at 9 feet.
20/8 Person: :) |====================| [chart]20 feet
+Christopher Pilcher *appears to the viewer 13 feet away
Also, I'm not 100% sure if it's actual magnification. I might just be the _resolution_ that an average person sees at 13 feet.
Thank you!
Lord Marcellus I may have been a bit ambiguous. You are right, it is not magnification. However, it's also not really resolution, either.
Functionally you can think of it as resolution, but it's more like sharpness meets focus.
But that's getting pedantic. You are definitely right. The really cool thing about optics and visual perception is how different our eyes are compared to cameras, even though they ostensibly do the same thing.
+Christopher Pilcher Woah that's intense I never knew that...
That was a pretty slick slide with Mr. Yogi you guys did.
woah! this was filmed at my local minor league stadium dell diamond/round rock express
This was super cool, thank you!
Nice swings! My coach taught me one of the reasons I couldn’t hit was because I was stepping towards third base. That might be a reason you weren’t hitting either. Once I got stepping towards the pitcher down, I was crushing the ball!
I can't believe this video manage to make baseball interesting. Great job :)
For batting it’s not really thought about cause it’s instinct but baseball players never even try and see the ball while it’s coming, we primarily rely on the release point and body movement of the pitcher. And sometimes when your really locked in you can see the movement of a curveball and react to it only cause of how slow curveballs are
Love the Carolina Mudcats helmet ;)
Ok, don't tell us what 20/8 means. Maybe another video?
+Kobi Jenkins They can see something at 20 feet where the normal person can only see only at 8. 20/20 is average because it means you can see something at twenty feet and normal can see it at 20 as well.
Just google it, it's not hard
+Brooks R this is going to become the standard response to every inquiry one has, "just google it"
+Sal Garcia I don't see why it shouldn't be, that's really all you have to do. But honesty, OP should know what it means, the "vision scale" as I'll call it is pretty common knowledge
What makes baseball more difficult as you climb the latter isn't just the higher pitch speed. It's also the variety professionals throw. You also have to adjust to different pitchers release points.
Well done
You should do vid on catching a batted ball
It’s easier to people who’ve practiced for a long time for so they have rep for there whole younger life

Awesome, I love it!
Love the start xD
And I this is why I ask people if they could hit a ball at 100 mph when they say baseball is easy
Robert Charlton I bet most of those people couldn’t even hit a 40 mph pitch lol
Lol 😂
This is why baseball is the hardest sport
Baseball is easy, anyone can do it. Its like painting. Anyone can do it, but it takes time to perfect it. Thats why its called "America's favorite pastime" bc its not hard at all. Anything gets hard at the major leagues.

I hit fairly well in Little League and Pony League. Once I got to Colt League I hit under .200. I simply could not pick up the ball coming at me at 85 mph. I also could not figure out where a curveball would be when it crossed the plate.

I've been wondering recently, and you seem good at finding answers to this sort of question (I tried and couldn't). We're always told, "Don't scratch," but if scratching is bad, why do we itch? Not surface irritation, like when a bug lands on you, but the physiological response that makes bug bites (and such) itch so much that someone will scratch until they bleed. What's the evolutionary benefit? On a related note, is it really bad to scratch a bug bite, or is that just one of those social etiquette things?
do more episodes about space like what's between galaxies or stuff like that
+TheNickJonathan An easy way to say it is this : there's a whole bunch of nothing, and quite a bit of dark matter
my favorite video from you
I'd like to see a version of this on cricket. Very similar numbers on speed and distance but in cricket there's a lot more variation batsmen have to deal with. I.E. Bounce, Swing, Reverse Swing, Seem Movement, Cracks in the pitch, etc.
Me too. However, there is a huge difference in the object of a cricket batsman and a baseball batsman. In cricket, the object is to not lose the wicket. This means the cricket batsman uses different "batting" techniques than the baseball batter. He normally doesn't take a full power swing. It is more of a defensive swing, or sometimes simply a "blocking" action. The cricket bat also has a larger hitting surface. I am not saying that one is better than the other. It is more like comparing apples and oranges.
There are also multiple baseball pitches like sinkers, sliders, curveballs, knuckleballs, cutters and way more! They don’t take a full power swing in baseball as well, they bunt or do a contact swing sometimes. Both are still incredible sports still.
19 dislike ... WHY??!??!?! this was awesome video :D
absolutely correct. Just look at the point/space where the pitcher releases ball from. The brain take care of rest. Just need to practice though. I have tried this when I bat playing cricket. It works.
+It's Okay To Be Smart thanks!
Fun fact, a 50 mph little league fastball will take 0.612 seconds to arrive at the plate.

Now you making it look harder to me!
I hate when people say baseball is easy it's not easy at all
Agreed. And just making contact with the ball isn't enough to be successful. You have to be able to overpower and DRIVE the ball with authority, otherwise, you have nothing to contribute to a team effort. People that have never played, then get in the box against a pitcher throwing nothing but straight pitches at medium speed, and finally foul tip a ball after 10 swings think it's something to celebrate. The first thing you have to overcome in a true game situation is the fear that the ball will hit you. Most people can't get over that. Also, almost everyone who hasn't played over estimates either how hard the ball is coming in, and also hard hard they can throw, until they see a real radar reading. The first time in your life that you face someone throwing 70, you will swear they are throwing nothing less than 100. We haven't even taken into account, movement, command of the strike zone, changing speeds, breaking pitches. If a person who never played baseball and thinks it's easy faced a MLB pitcher, AND if that pitcher didn't want him to even touch the ball, the batter would not have a clue how to make foul tip contact. Today, some of the most gifted athletes are being recruited to play professional baseball. The NFL acknowledges they are losing draft picks to MLB. You have a chance for a longer career, and a lesser chance of debilitating injuries and concussions.
Rick Vaughn is living proof you can get by with just a good pair of glasses

how do you evade a fast jab from Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Thomas Hearns?
You train your eyes to speed you practice ball movement stay in the batting cage its starts at a young age making contact with ball speed but its all vision n how you process the throw

I've only been to a batting cage once in my life. You guys have to try it... The machine was zipping out at 80 mph. I hit 7 out of 10 of them. 3 or 4 pretty solid and tipped off the rest. I was a little shocked when a few other people around started paying attention. It's very cool the power when you connect to the ball. I wasn't expecting it. It's really one of those things you've got to try for yourself because it's an experience you'll enjoy and it'll give you a better appreciation when you see someone else that can do it really well.
Try it when you reach the age of 50. Sixty five mph becomes a huge challenge to make contact.
