Luego, un amigo suyo ( Marcos Shakhin) se la atribuyó a Caccini (autor barroco 1551-1618) La interpretación de la soprano Irina Arkhipova en 1987, (con un arreglo del organista Oleg Tanchgenko) hizo que esta Ave Maria alcanzase la fama y popularidad que ahora tiene y que Vavilov no pudo llegar a conocer (murió pobre y de cáncer de páncreas)

True, but Vavilov initially didn't take credit for it, listing it as "Anonymous". One of the early performers of it claimed it to be a recently discovered work by the Baroque composer Caccini. Although he didn't write it, I'm sure Caccini would have no problem being associated with such a lovely composition. And yes, wonderful singing.

I certainly have no problem giving Vavilov his due, and agree that he needs to be mentioned when this is performed, but the backstory gives us important details. The composer initially passed this off as an "anonymous" Baroque composition, not a work written in the late 30th century. It was originally published without lyrics as part of a collection of lute pieces. His daughter later said that he wanted the music to be more widely appreciated than if had identified it as his own, given his lack of fame. It wasn't until later that a friend of his and fellow musician claimed it was a newly-discovered work by Caccini. This reminds me of those tongue-in-cheek hoaxes Fritz Kreisler wrote around a century ago and passed off as by famous composers such as Vivaldi.
