I had an Amiga 2000 with a PC Bridgeboard in it in college. I would do my Computer Science homework on the PC Bridgeboard side and then play games on the Amiga side, haha. After I graduated I traded the Amiga 2000 in towards an Amiga 3000, which I still have. Over the years since I've acquired an Amiga 500, an Amiga 1000, another A2000 and an Amiga 1200. Debating on trying to expand my collection or not. Not much room left. Anyway, I enjoy your videos a lot, thanks! I would like to see more footage from around your city, it looks beautiful!
Great video! I've recapped some A600s, too. Some were heavily corroded or damaged by leaking caps, others weren't. I did clean the 'fishy parts' with isopropyl alcohol several times until there was absolutely no electrolyte left (board surface has to look shiny not dull or smeared - *very* tedious, but IMHO worth the effort). For desoldering I don't use hot air or the ZD-915 station, I recently switched to a Hakko FR-301 and really never regretted it, but that's just my personal opinion. It is really great that you also show when mistakes have been made. Good channel! Love the views from Norway (been there 2017). 🙂
Hello Bernhard. Thanks for the message. I want to switch to Hakko in fact, since I see others have recommended it too. Just need to find a good priced one first. I guess there are several models. I'll check out the FR-301
Never had an Amiga as a kid but i now have an A500 , A1000 and A1200 . Great video. You have a lot of patience , and its great to see you dont give up.
I had exactly the same problem fixing up my own Amiga 600, I ended up ripping up the same cap pad you did, as well as multiple keyboard pads. Ended up doing exactly the same fix but with 30-gauge wire wrapping wire. Those old Commodore boards are well known for being a bit fragile! I bet the electrolyte from the leaky caps was the culprit in these cases. Also: electrolyte can leak under the chips, especially around the Even CIA. if your floppy disk stops working, the chip is likely fine but the electrolyte may have eaten at the vias under the chip, that's what happened to mine.
Hello Tommy you did a awsome jobb Amiga 600 is hard work. And yes electrolyte makes old solder work less. I always try to blend new solder with new to make it work. I am impressed of your stamina.
my A600 when i brought it had a bad left audio output sounding low and crunchy. a grate thanks to Arctic Retro for location of the amp chip on the schematics, it needs a recap on the capacitors but found gunk on the chip legs ... easy fix :).
I had a A500 as a kid. Now I alot of Amigas. The only model I dont have is the Amiga 3000😀 Great video Tommy! I Hope you will do more Amiga repairs in the future.
I purchased my Amiga 500 in 1989, after that I got a A3000 and then an A1200. Unfortunately I don't have them anymore, but I'm hoping to get another one at some point. Got to save up the money first. :)
Couple of days ago I was testing my Amiga 1200 with Amiga Test kit 1.5. I was testing the CIA Precision Timers. I got a CIAA TOD expect 16 ticks :10149055 -> fail Is my CIA chip broken?
Hi Tommy, I have recapped several a600. I can advice next time to replace the 2 smd sound capacitors with regular axial caps, easier to install and to replace later if needed. I have an old hakko desoldering station, but this worked fine to remove the keyboard connector, strange that you are having such a hard time. Regarding the memory, yes for each partition you mount you loose quite some memory, basically with a HD you must have a memory expansion. You mentioned upgrading the memory, did you already buy a ram expansion for this?
Thanks! I haven't bought something yet. I am gonna buy a Terrible Fire for an A1200, so I'll get some upgrade for the A600 then. I am thinking about a TF1230 as a 1260 is way too expensive at the moment.
I had a 1200 Bundle back in the day and I’ve just found an Amiga A600 in a sorry state of repair that I’d put in Storage about 25 years ago, I’ve just ordered a PSU for it to see if it still works? I will be uploading a Video to my Channel at some point soon hopefully!
@@Arcticretro Tested it yesterday and it did initially turn on and displayed the Insert Disk Screen and, Turned it off & then connected it to a different Screen and initially got a Grey Screen & now I’m just getting a Black Screen, Checked the PSU Voltages white it plugged in to the Amiga & Turned On and I’m getting 5V & 12V, Had a quick look inside the PSU & theirs a Burnt spot on the PCB between 2 x Diodes near the Transformer but still seems to be working ok but not sure for how long, Do you think the Amiga needs Re-Capping?
I was looking on a Forum(Amiga Lemon) I think and someone suggested removing the Capacitor near NE555 and theirs would then boot up, Removed the Capacitor and was met with a horrible smell & I believe some people have said that it smells like Fish, Not sure about that, Plugged it back in and got the Insert Disk Screen back, Cleaned off the Electrolyte using some White Vinegar & Servisol & then plugged it back in and back to black screen and sometimes a grey screen, Left it a while and I’m now getting the Disk Loading Screen most of the time and the Screen Flickers , I will replace that Cap & will clean up the area with IPA before doing so as I’ve just ordered an A600 Capacitor kit but it’s sounding hopeful at least!
End of the 80's i had C64 and few years later i owned couple of A500 systems, then i got my first actual computer wich was IBM Aptiva 486 1994 and since then i have built my own PC systems :)
The problem is no steady hand when soldering. And yes retrobrighting just using the sun works.maybe using two soldering irons would have been less problematic from the beginning. Well done anyway.
I'm not sure the extra amounts of flux are good for other than extensive sniffing. I never had an Amiga but always wished to have one. In these days UAE (the emulator, not the country) suits me well. Please do not reflect the stubbornness of this board to ones inability. Even an absolute electronics guru would have had the sweats with this. You made an excellent documentary of your hard work and how this machine is really worth it.

A600 really killed Commodore. It was a shit computer, and worst of all, Commodore stopped A500 production to boost the sales of A600. It went the opposite, so they lost market opportunities.

It's a nice machine. You can find it quite cheap still (the 500 that is)

Good learning on the keyboard connector. It's quite likely you can only melt parts like this off and put in a new one.
Very true!

Had a few amigas over the years. 500, 500+, 1200 and now another 2 500s.
Cool

3000 is the dream. I don't have it. It costs too much now
Had a 1000 with a ton of upgrades. Wish I still had it...

Thank you man, i enjoyed your videos, that's good 👍 continue more more more 👍
Thanks, will do!
Retrobrite of case without chemicals? I didn't know that was possible.
Oh yes it is. I have done it several times. Just place it out in the sun for many hours (2-3 days) if you have time to wait.
Hey Tommy! What controller pad were you using at the end of the video?
It's an Amstrad controller. I got it with an Amstrad CPC machine. That's all I know
The problem is no steady hand when soldering. And yes retrobrighting just using the sun works.maybe using two soldering irons would have been less problematic from the beginning. Well done anyway.
Steady hands are definetly an issue :) However, it is worse when the camera is in the way
Sunlight retrobrighting in Norway? Good luck then. 😜
@@madmartigan1498 I just have to wait until february :)

I have had an amiga 4000 since 1992. now it gives a black screen
Ok. That is sad. Not able to fix ?

Hi Tommy
I think chucky has released a replacement a600 PCB, maybe a idea for a future video
Ok, thanks for the advice :)
Great !
