- Beyond being beautiful, wolves are critical keystone species. By regulating prey populations, wolves enable many other species of plants and animals to flourish. Without predators, such as wolves, an ecosystem fails to support a natural level of biodiversity, and may cease to exist altogether.
Zephyr is a captive-born gray wolf at the Wolf Conservation Center (WCC), a 501c3 non-profit organization, in South Salem, NY. He is one of the four 'ambassador wolves' at the WCC that help teach the public about wolves and their vital role in the environment.

@Rebecca Reed, I had a beautiful black and white Siberian Husky with blue eyes, and he used to howl just like this. I called it "singing", and gave him the command and he would start howling. I taught him by howling at him to encourage him.

I’ve been lucky to hear the howls of these magnificent animals while camping in the back territories around West Texas. I love the sounds of the babies howling. Especially on a cold winter night at 2am while snuggled in my tent.
I love wolves so much. And we should be so thankful to them for the brave and curious ones who came down the long path to doghood.

Man and wolf never lived in harmony. Dogs were slowly domesticated alongside humans but wolves and man were always enemies throughout history, though in modern days wolves are treated like the gods of the animal kingdom. Those days where "man and wolf live in harmony" are now.
PaintedParadox Given how many wolves are slaughtered across America, Russia and North Europe and how even in the places were they are supposed to be protected people are killing them, I'd say we still have a lot of work to do to reach peaceful coexistence with wolves. But you're correct that man and wolves have never coexist in peace except in some countries like Japan and Ancient Rome where they were considered sacred animals (unfortunately the japan wolf was exterminated as soon as it lost such divine status)
