Showing you the dirty details of Pilatus ownership! Earlier this week I found oil on my wing. I’m bringing you along as I’m getting to the bottom of it.
One item of many that I learned* as an A&P, when something is not right, what was the most recent maintenance performed and might it have anything to do with what is now happening? That is usually the best starting point. Great job of troubleshooting Mark. * Unfortunately you get the learning/experience from screwing something up or having a co-worker screw something up. You learn from your mistakes, but a wise man learns from the mistakes of others.
I just want say how impressed I am with the way you are I don't really get that way often, but the.. way people are today I think it's important to express how a rare it is to know there people like you in the world.
Gotta love Covington Aircraft. I actually worked for them in 2012. Great shop to work for and with! They have great customer service from just answering questions to making things right if there is a warranty repair for something on an engine they've worked on. Glad to hear it all worked out, fair skies to you Mark!
Glad to see that the issue was just a minor issue of a damaged seal, as you said it sucks that it had to happen in the first place, but these things happen, it is fixed and now you are flying again cleanly. I work on a lot of PT6 engines and as you said they just run and run.
awsome! I like how the aiplane community works together. Im a Sailplane Pilot by myself and here its the same... if you need something or help there will always be someone who steps in and gets you a quick solve for any probelem!
I used to service Cessna Caravans for the FEDEX and UPS subcontractors. There isn't a finer aircraft or engine in the air in my opinion or an easier one to work on. You do need a ladder sometimes though.
Bad installs probably account for more than half of all the oil leaks out there. And you can't even blame someone for it, it's down to just how bad your luck is in that day. I've seen guys with 40 years of experience have it go wrong. I mean, sure, some people mess it up on account of their inexperience, but it happens way too often to be just that, IMO. Seals can make one's hairs go white.
Hey Mark. What watch do you have? I love the Large Numbers - every digital watch I know has too small numbers for my eyes. Can't be bothered to get my glasses every time I want to know the time. So forced to wear analogue :(
Not sure how installing a starter gen would damage the accessory drive seal. Maybe the Air Oil separator carbon seal as it's located behind the starter gearshaft. Maybe this engine uses magnetic/carbon seals as accessory seals and the runner was damaged at seal or SG installation?
You discovered a problem, found its source, then planned and executed a solution. Too bad you couldn't fix the flaws in your government in that same way.
You can do regular maintenance, but in this case I had Covington do it for us, I don’t think this could be considered maintenance, but rather falls under repair. Like anything in aviation, you need it done by the right people and document it correctly. 🤠👍
Let me guess, you're one of the people that can't tell them apart visually as well. They may be "identical twins" but to me it is so easy to know who is Mark and who is Mike even with just a photo.

Love these high end aircraft maintenance vids! Most of us piston guys don't get to play with these so in my opinion super entertaining!
With everything coming together like that , I’m surprised you didn’t win the lottery as well 😃🍻
Lucky Duck to have such a support system behind you when you need them they come through for you.

Paul Abbott, what a genuine and generous guy who started an awesome company. Glad to have such an awesome company here in Oklahoma.
We had a fleet of 12 PC12 NG - 67P at 5500 hour overhaul. Great airplanes and great engines.
That’s what happens when you are a respected man ppl are happy to help out it works both ways mate great costumer service 👍👍

Knew it'd be a quick fix... Glad you all have amazing companies that support keep their customers flying...
Lesson number 427 on "Keeping your Bet Tug Clean"... Luv It...
Always love you and your brothers content never disappoints except im addicted to it hahaha

I hope you never have an oil leak on your sailplane!
Outstanding! Outstanding diagnosis, outstanding effort output, outstanding resolution! Thanks to all! #IntoTheWildBlueYonder!
Good thing you figured out where the oil leak was before taking Perry to get its new sexy paint job!
More Patey videos. Awesome!! Thanks Mark.
More to come!
WOW almost like AOG response. Love the vids, keep em coming eduational and entertaining.
Thank God a Patey is making airplane video’s again. Enough of that stinking pool, WE WANT AIRPLANES. Thank you for picking up Mike’s slack!
dead on !
I’m floored that the Patey brothers didn’t own the tool.
They are keeping it so Mike can make a better, stronger easier to use one with Carbon Fibre!
😂😂😂
They could of made the tool
Cont O300D with original pushrod tubes. I'm jealous of that floor!!!!
That starter looked heavy. I would hope some install fixture can be used to align and slide into position.
Dang, Mike woulda had that fixed 10 hours before it started leaking! Just kidding, love both of your vids!
Amazing service Mark - impressive:)
Covington Okmulgee saved my bacon late one night. Truly quality people.

II have two watches I love. The new Garmin and the new Apple
Engine manufacturers should add red dye to the oil so that it looks like it is "bleeding"
Thanks for valid information Mark -
Glad it was an easy and obvious fix
Keep the videos coming

Another s.p. for the Best Tug - Oil Resistant.
5000 hours, thats 8 hours per day for well over a year and a half ! Impressive.
Hello from Minnesota!! Nice job trouble shooting.
Amazing turnaround. I don’t get that turnaround time with my local car dealer. 😂
True, but to be fair, you probably would if the car cost ~$4 million like a Pilatus does 😂
Good Video Sir. Thank you,
Those starter generators are heavy and maintenance access isn't real good on a lot of those installations, stuff like that just happens.
2380 ain't cheap Mark! You can't waste a drop!
Isn’t that the truth 😂
Need that floor coated, easier to see the drips and dropped parts.
cant let the Best Tug get oil all over it
Can’t believe you don’t have an A & P!
… I thought that’s how the oil was changed… clearly I have been flying trainers too long…
I’m a Garrett AiResearch person. Better engines . Prat engines have to much spin up time. Garrett are instant. Zero spool up time
A black light really shows up turbine oil well.
First.
love you guys.
Ahhh, thanks 😊
Yes!
I’ve always wondered WHY they always leak above a certain level of oil in the engine
If you see a drip, there is something wrong - funny thing, it's same with my Rotax. 🙂
Looks like the finnoff engine is on, did you guys do the mod?
Where is the squished seal?
You discovered a problem, found its source, then planned and executed a solution.
Too bad you couldn't fix the flaws in your government in that same way.
I guess even this small repair was 5000$, right? 😯
I wonder how many pilots would have even noticed that small amount of oil?
I thought FAA rule State if you own the plan you can work on it? Ist that right

Mark, I never knew you spoke Latin!
If you could get that kind of service in auto repair shop.😂
I'm the #667 thumbs up. I had to sprinkle my thumb with holy water before pressing it....j/k...lol
😂😂😂
What is a Beta ?
It’s the ability to use the prop as a brake buy change it’s pitch, like and air driven reverse gear.
Outstanding.
If waited longer for a haircut
😂😂😂
I didn't think turbines need itself lubrication 😄
Oh, man, no video!
If only our government was so professional and responsible for mishaps and mistakes...
Weird how you and your brothers pattern of speech differs.
I think it's the 6 pots of coffee a day, Mike drinks!
Let me guess, you're one of the people that can't tell them apart visually as well. They may be "identical twins" but to me it is so easy to know who is Mark and who is Mike even with just a photo.
@@ginacalabrese3869 Actually, I think they are visually different.
Mark has more hair
Would of been cool to see the repair rather than just talking about it...
Good point, I try and record most stuff but work can get in the way at times.
Non giocare con il pilatus perché non perdona l'incidente di Milano itali insegna
I strongly dislike, added movie, clips….👎🏻
can I get my 10 minutes back?
