The conversation between Dowager Empress and Ruyi is probably the second most important one in the entire series.
Dowager Empress knows and accepts her son and Ruyi love one another and doesn't refuse Ruyi the Empress seat out of malice or hate. She's trying so hard to get Ruyi to stop dreaming the Emperor can ever fulfill the husband role and consider the Empress seat logically. That politics, tradition, and expectations fully control the Emperor's life and he has/will changed from the person Ruyi knew.
And then Empress Dowager lights up like a boss after giving her final warning. Love her!

@@angelgon06 If I remember correctly, after the fourth prince Yongcheng (Noble Consort Jia's son) began to gain the Emperor's favour, and rumours began flying around that Yongcheng would inherit the throne, there was a conversation between the Empress Dowager and Ruyi where she warned her that as the head of the harem, she was to control anyone if they started harbouring such thoughts. (Basically the Empress Dowager telling Ruyi to be careful of Jia's intentions)
The phoenix necklace to Ruyi was actually a "tribute" from Jia, who it received from a governor. As she was rewarding (basically bribing) the court ladies with gifts to speak in favour of Yongcheng to their husbands, and needed an explanation should Ruyi ever question her actions. Thus, she gifted the phoenix & peony necklace to Ruyi. (Since traditionally only the Empress can wear anything with those symbols, this can be interpreted as her "respecting" the Empress, even though we all know her true intentions are nothing of the sort)
Then, there's the scene where Liyu delivers the Emperor's order telling Chun that he's to visit her tonight, and Ruyi gifts her the phoenix necklace, knowing 100% that with the emperor visiting, Chun would wear it. The Emperor notices and comments on how despite it being a gift from the Empress, Chun should avoid wearing it. Ruyi completely knows it's suspicious that Jia, the original receiver of the necklace, would ever "receive such an item surpassing her rank," and just as Ruyi hoped, Chun points out this to the Emperor. At this point Chun's and Ruyi's relationship has been mended, and she has no need to bring down Chun. Ruyi's intention was to warn the Emperor of not just Jia's intentions for Yongcheng to inherit the throne, but of even the court officials supporting him.
Just as luck would have it, on the Emperor's way to visiting Chun, he coincidentally mets 3 court ladies entering the palace to pay their respects, yet for some reason they say they are returning from Jia's palace, and are heading to the Empress' next. (According to rank, they should have visited the Empress, Ruyi first) The Emperor concludes that they are attempting to curry favour with Jia, since everyone knows Yongcheng is favoured. Combined with his naturally suspicious nature, and well... you know what happens next.
I believe there's a frame a few seconds long after Chun and Liyu both leave after the necklace is gifted to Chun, and Ruyi looks down with a contemplative expression, probably feeling a little guilt for using Chun this way, since Chun believed Ruyi to just be blessing her with luck.

    (...spoiler alert.....)
After watching this entire series I actually like the fact that Ruyi was placed with Consort Chun in her tomb garden in the end, as to "set her free". I bet Consort Chun was waiting for her and they strolled just like they are doing now; fully understanding everything that has past and given peace to walk together..... Hopefully Guard Ling is there too waiting with Ruyi's children....

Woooooo! This got me in the feels. Somewhere towards the end of the series I could have sworn Ruyi reminisces and says she had been dreaming of walking with Guard Ling beside her like the old times but I can't find it again. Still, I think you are right. Those names she lists at the end I can see so many of them gathered, especially Consort Chun and Shu and Noble Lady Wei. Of all the people who she touched with her love and compassion these three times she truly understood the pain. Everyone says that at the end the Emperor was selfish for cutting his hair to meet Qingying again. She died the day the Dowager Empress renamed her, so the Emperor was looking for a phantom in his regret. And no one will ever have been more gratefully received than Consort Yu.
The only thing that got to me was when Ruyi said she never loved another man with such conviction because she was deeply in love with Ling Yunche and we could see it when she couldn't.

@@amaranth000 maybe undressed for Ruyi. There’s a good sense of reason why her hairstyle without glistening with too much ornaments. Even though it’s base on status they have, and why few of them have almost over the top ornaments. Ruyi acknowledges on her humble ways, even with Hailan. If you notice on some of them, they know where they came from, without going overboard of their hair. Hence the headdress that you see Ruyi wears, is always fits her more than the other ladies. And I love the three or four of the headdress that Ruyi wears. The one after she wears on episode 47 or 48 (not the one she wears for that long ceremony walk on becoming set-empress) but the one she wore after the ceremony in her second red dress gown. That I love more, than the first wife own headdress. Since the actress who plays Ruyi, have that nice face shape, that doesn’t need to overshadow by the hair piece for her. Since, it’s her emotions or facial expression that you need to look upon more.

For me, the fact that Qianlong "couldn't face" Yonghuang's funeral makes me so angry. Like ... He knew that Xiaoxian was the direct cause of Zhemin's death and was angry and disinherited his son because *checks notes* he didn't lament that the woman who murdered his mother and sister out of jealousy was dead. He paid his respects to her as the Empress but didn't sob like the rest of them because he couldn't even muster the ability to. I don't know what Yonghuang died from, but personally, I'd like to think it was from a broken heart.

The Empress was not just the wife of the Emperor, she was also the "Mother" of the nation, just as the Emperor was the "Father" of the nation. The subjects were their "Children". This stems from the Confucianisic belief that a cohesive family unit is the highest moral aspiration for humans. If the family is morally good and works together, they will prosper, as will any business the family owns. If they are morally corrupt and in conflict with each other, the family (and again, any business) will fail. So the father as head of the family bears the responsibility to guide his family, and the mother bears the responsibility of teaching their children to follow and obey their father's guidance. The thought is that personal sacrifice in the name of duty to the family was morally superior to individualistic desires.
Now, just as today, people remarried back in ancient China. Divorce was accessible for the common people, concubines were acceptable and respected for the more elite classes because again, the more children you have the more prosperous your family was seen as, the more your businesses could grow, and the more likely you would be to have heirs to inherit your business. And of course, the median age for women was lower in that time due to death from child birth complications, etc. So, Stepmothers were extremely common. In fact, some of the earliest "Cinderella" stories that feature cruel stepmothers actually come from China.
Now scale that up to a nation. If the Emperor as the Father of the nation loses his first wife, his first Empress, he needs a new official wife to take over as the "Step"-Mother of the nation, as the leader of his harem, and as the role model for other women. And because he needs a wife to fulfill religious ritual roles.
This is why, in a later episode, when Lady Jia makes the jibe of "Beading the string" vs "Filling the room" everyone is so appalled. "Beading the string" implies that someone has taken a succession of lovers which was acceptable at the time and still implied that the person married you because they cared about you, while "Filling the Room" implies that the person has many others around them simply because they are useful tools. Jia was implying that the Emperor made Ruyi his second Empress because she was the most useful to him at the time, not because he loved her and wanted her to be honored.
What makes it more muddled is how the Emperor treated Ruyi after her death because of their estrangement in the last years of Ruyi's life. The Emperor actually had another step-empress after Ruyi. Yes, Consort Ling went on to become his next Empress in reality. At least, she was granted the title and a posthumous Empress name of Xiaoyichun after her death, just as the first Empress got her posthumous name of Xiaoxianchun. Ruyi received no name or title upon her death, and in fact, Qianlong did his very best to erase her existence from record. But it had nothing to do with Ruyi being a step empress or her role/duties being seen as less than Fuca's during life, but everything to do with their estrangement and whatever fight they had that caused Qianlong to want to depose of Ruyi as the the Empress in life.

@Ana Maria Pohl thank you dear. It's all about learning historical context, and being willing to try to understand different cultures. I'm a white, western woman, so I will never fully understand the depth of cultural impact that this history has on modern Asian women. But I love to learn. I crave learning.
And what I have learned the most, is that at our core, throughout history, we are all human beings, trying our best to live good lives and provide for our families as best as we can. Now, how we do that varies widely, because humans are a diverse species that can never agree on one course of action or one mode of thought, regardless of the time or place.
Which, in all honesty, is not always a bad thing. If we all thought alike, there would be no innovation, no progress. We would all still be primordial soup, swimming in the same pond.
Looking at history through modern eyes and modern biases is tricky, and requires both compassion and logical thinking.
