I promise you, dreads are not dirty if you keep them up. These dudes right here did not do that. That's why they look like that.
The only time they should be in a "dirty stage" is when you are trying to loc them. As soon as they loc you can wash them as much as you like. Washing them helps them loc more when mature. THEY ARE NOT DIRTY UNLESS YOU DON'T CARE.
exactly, some people want the locs but then they don't take care of them and make the rest of the loc'd community look "dirty", when most of us are not!

Had locs 2 years ago and kept them. My barber said your hair is so clean for locs. I said I maintained my own and used aloe on my retwist and a spray bottle with vitamin oils in it. It’s all in how you maintain them. Peace 💪🏾💯

Trust me, some of the people you see in these videos be the type that just want locs for the look (as in, they wanna look like these stupid rappers)and don't bother taking PROPER care of them, tryna make it look like we're all dirty and grimy and stuff but we're not. They don't wanna make a real commitment to them. But I do understand in other cases sometimes their hair could be damaged and they need to cut it for said reason...but I am not cutting mine off, EVER. you need to educate yourself on locs, bruh. Gotta disagree bruh. The stigmatism on locks being dirty is something that was put on ppl of color. However, perception is not always reality. As we notice most of the locks we see here are referred to as "Wicks" which are what is popular and been around for years in Florida. The maintenance and upkeep on them can be handled properly also. But you stated some said get waves, I've seen some who have waves that be considered "dirty" as the durag has white spots from scratching, too much caked up grease, wolfing so long that the appearance of waves looks poor, and ect. So it can be arguments on both sides. I've had both but prefer the curly fro. Once again the perception of locks being dirty is a myth just as the perception of you having waves means your hair is clean. Lol!

Honestly dreadlocks are a cool style.
Most people who get them are told NOT TO WASH their hair for several weeks to a month. The hair then goes into a ‘budding’ stage where the lock is forming but it needs to be twisted with a comb. Products are used and that’s where some of the build up comes from.
