@@dieAlbaKidsyou haven't understand anything if you think this trilogy is like HG. 😂 The fact that the Maze Runner shows union and not killing each other, the fact there is no "big evil" but it's the definition of "good" that changes, the decision to remove cheesy love stories, the realism of the visuals/ acting/ concept of story... and I'll stop here.
Thus it's definitely an underrated series. (regardless of different taste)

And to clap you in this discussion, I didnt say its exactly the same, i said its essentially the same. They play in a dystopian world where a few kids turn out to find the truth about the world and get together with a rebellion to beat their oppressors. But hunger games is still the better trilogy. The "treatment" is in their blood, but can be harvested directly from their brains if they're in stasis. Mary, the doctor who treated Brenda, was able to pull it from Thomas's blood, but it would have to be like all the blood in his body to get the amount they can get keeping them in stasis and pulling it from their brain, so it is more economical to do it that way.

@@cjjackson2423 I'm gonna but this on heavy spoilers for the books just in case anyone does want to read them.
Their "escape" from WCKD, or WICKED in the books, is very different. Basically, they're taken away on a school bus by some rescuers who later turned out to be WICKED, and that they're all infected by the Flare. There's a cure but it's in the middle of the desert and they needed to go there to get it. However, there is another group, Group B (the girls' Maze) that is also going to be going towards the Cure. And they have to get to this spot in a certain amount of time.
Winton's death happens on their way to the desert. The boys, Group A, have very little supplies and have to climb up some stairs in order to get to the desert. In the dark and being attacked by these liquid metal balls.
These liquid metal balls, which cam come from any direction, can latch on to any limb. And once they encapsulate that limb, it dissolves them in a sort of acid.
Winston gets hit in the face with one of these metal balls and falls down the stairs. The group does their best to help him, but pulling the liquid metal ball off doesn't exactly work. It reforms every time they get a little off. Thomas manages to get it off, at the expense of injuring his own hands. However, Winston if left with severe burns and blisters.
Group A carries him through the desert, sand, and sun. The group is caught in an electrical sandstorm, which cuts their numbers down from 20 to 11.
Winston is one of the losses. He gets severe acid burns, sun burns, sand everywhere, and is taken out by lightning. It's brutal.

The Maze Runner book came out in 2009, which is when The Last of Us was already in development. However, the Scorch Trials (book) came out the following year, which was before TLOU was officially revealed in 2011. There is concept art of the infected from TLOU that dates back to 2009, but it's highly likely that the idea of cordyceps was already out in the wild and feeding into the concepts of how to "reinvent" zombies, ya know?
It's also likely that the film makers took some inspiration from TLOU videogame when adapting the "cranks" to live-action. Either way, they are creepy as hell :P

I'm so glad that you all discussed the bigger moral issues in the story. Most people who watch this show just completely miss the point. They focus so heavily on hating Theresa, hating on her choices, they say she's a traitor when really she isn't. She NEVER was with Thomas and his friends. He was the one who went against WCKD and tried to save them and she went along because she lost her memory (yes, I understand it's different in the books) but when she remembered everything and that she was FOR WCKD's approach she went back to the side she was always on. It felt like a betrayal but she was always for the sacrifice play. And I agree that WCKD's work is going overboard, it's extreme but they are scientists doing their jobs. Think about how we all felt closed up in our houses during Covid waiting on a vaccine. There are people waiting for a cure that they promised they could find. It's not hard to see why they would come to the conclusion of use ANY methods necessary (even though they are wrong!) when people are dying daily and becoming these monsters, the population is shrinking, soon there won't be anyone left to save. Time is running out. Thomas is right, but Teresa has a point too. It's not a black and white situation at all.

guess I'll jump in on this: Jane menioned being pro Ellie and anti WCKD and I think it's a good transitons to my point. 1: Ellie given the choice wanted to do that, though her reason are not solidy made (in my opinion), I wouldn't feel morally wrong if they informed her properly. 2: Ellie is 1 person and they knew for sure was immune. With this, as stated, is a whole generation of children that are not innately immune. 3: Ellie wasn't made to suffer first. it wasn't a requirement for her to go through the things all the kids in all the mazes had to go through. Yes, she did suffer but that was of the world, not of some prerequest to be drained of life never knowing what was going on and why. Just on my own moral, even with your covid example, I just wouldn't be ok with masses of people (child or not) suffering through these trials and being killed to save the world. I don't want to live in exhange of something like that. The greater good means not if not given willingly and I turly belive that you can not speak of saving lives without doing right by the ones you aim to take. Teresa is also a child of suffering and she was feed the ideals when she was at her lowest. Nonethelss, she had a choice but robbed the other children of theirs. While I can understand how someone can feel torn and see situations like this as a gary area but for some people it will always be wrong without the gray, I don't think that's wrong. Though I am speaking biasly as somone who just isn't hard-wired to see this personally as such. As for Terease this is beyond a matter of hating her, she is a character I have compaison for, or seeing her as a traitor, beause she was always on thier side. It is a matter of not agreeing with her which in a larger scale is WCKD and the path they decided to take and I don't feel that is wrong.

@@subjecta1-teresa Teresa's goal was to save both, Thomas's was to save his friends, WICKED's was to save the world not including the immunes. Teresa's deal was simple, and that's confirmed in many scenes in TDC. Her deal was hat they would all get trialed and tested, if the blood doesn't respond any better then they would be released that's proven when Ava Paige gave up when Mihno's blood failed. I would've done the same thing as her. And people blame her for Newt's death when he was anyways going to die if he went to the safe heaven cus the virus is airborne and it would reach the safe heaven eventually, the only way Newt survives was if Thomas listened to her. And maybe she would be alive too if he went with them in TST since the rebels wouldn't breach the city.

There are no love-triangles in "The Maze Runner" Trilogy films, which is something to be grateful for. However, there is a love story between two of the characters. I'm guessing not who you think, though.
One of the great things about these films is that they probe the nature of "good" and "evil," and show how difficult it is to distinguish the concepts at times.
We learn a number of things during "The Scorch Trials." We learn that the immunes can treat the Flare, but they can't cure it. The whole idea behind the Trials is to create something like engrams in the brain which would alter the brain's chemistry and so the enzyme which is used as a treatment. The idea is that if the right combination of engrams is produced through reactions from the Trials, which are complex and terrifying scenarios to overcome, a cure might be found. It's the trilogy's McGuffin, so you shouldn't fixate on it, however. An important fact to remember is that when Thomas and the Gladers arrive at Jansen's facility, none of the immunes is a cure. At Jansen's facility, phase two begins. Phase two consists of virtual Trials which explains some of the headgear on the immunes. So, the reactors were correct about that. At the same time, the enzyme is being extracted directly from their brains. Presumably this is for efficacy testing as well as use in treatment. Taking it from their brains eliminates the step of separating it from the blood in case you were wondering.
In our hero's adventure-journey, Theresa clearly represents the monomyth's temptress who tries to derail Thomas. She doesn't tempt Thomas with sex, but with arguments both logical and emotional advocating WCKD's viewpoint. It's reasonable to suspect her from the very beginning. Unlike Thomas, she completely broke the Glade's paradigm. Her arrival in the Glade is untimely, she's female, and she heralds the end of the Glade's supply lifeline. Totally inauspicious. Kaya Scodelario does a good job of making her character seem suspect from the get-go. There always seems to be a mistrust-invoking aura about her. In the "Scorch Trials," she tells Thomas "Everything was fine until you ...." This implies she never approved of what he'd done. Thomas' drug-induced dream-vision at Marcus' party makes it clear Theresa wasn't part of Thomas' betrayal of WCKD. Thomas obviously acted alone. The longer Theresa is in contact with Thomas through the first two films, the further she seems to move away from him. This begs the question of why Theresa was sent to the Glade. In the first film, Thomas himself even asks her if she's sure she doesn't remember more of her past life. Does he have some subconscious doubt about her?
There are interesting parallels between Theresa and Thomas. Both Theresa and Thomas are betrayers. Which one is evil depends on your answer to the films' theme: Does the end justify means? They both want a cure for the Flare. However, Theresa/WCKD are ruthless in pursuit of a cure, willing to sacrifice however many immunes it takes. Thomas, on the other hand, is completely altruistic. He is only willing to sacrifice himself.
One wonders if after Thomas stung himself in the first film, he doesn't remember more than he lets on. He acts like he does. He seems to know why he was put into the Glade. Earlier, he told Newt and the others he didn't recognize Theresa, but we know he did. Very uncharacteristic of Thomas to lie. Does he have subconscious suspicions about Theresa and not want to give voice to them? Or is he afraid admitting he knows Theresa will make the Gladers more suspicious of him?
In the second film, the purpose behind Thomas' questioning by Jansen may be to ascertain whether Thomas can be rehabilitated and brought back into the WCKD fold. Thomas clearly was a valued asset to WCKD before his fall from grace. If he'd passed Jansen's test, he would have had his memory completely restored like Theresa apparently did. After Theresa's memory is restored, it's increasingly clear Theresa approves of WCKD and its means. She even begins subtly showing disgust or animosity towards Thomas. Her reaction as she looked at the handheld radio at Jorge's hold sealed the deal. She is going to betray Thomas. The only question was under what circumstances, although you might assume it'll happen when the maximal harm will be done.
In "Scorch Trials" we discover why Thomas was put into the Glade. He'd betrayed WCKD to the Right Arm. Specifically, he informed the Right Arm about the locations of all WCKD's facilities. Presumably, Thomas was sentenced to the Glade in lieu of immediate death because he was an immune, and WCKD didn't want to "waste" his death. In other words, the prospective trauma his death might cause the other Gladers which might enhance the efficacy of their anti-Flare enzyme. His WCKD tag readout at Jorge's did say "To be killed." On the other hand, since Thomas was the best and brightest of the immunes, WCKD may have hoped he'd serve as a catalyst for the Gladers and bring the experiment to completion. That's certainly what happened. So, they may have intended to send him to the Glade all along, and he just made it easier for them. That said, it's clear from what both Jansen and Ava Paige say in the second film that they want Thomas back in WCKD. He clearly was important before the Glade, and his importance to WCKD may have increased afterwards because he did successfully solve the maze. What does Ava Paige say at the end of the first film: "Thomas continues to impress. He may be the key."
Another item worth considering is that whatever Theresa is and whatever capabilities she has now that her memory is restored, Thomas was and has. In fact, he was probably more capable.
There's an especially interesting scene near the end of "Scorch Trials." WCKD has seized control of the Right Arm base because of Theresa's treachery and is ready to evacuate the immunes and kill the Right Arm personnel. Thomas, who had escaped, surrenders himself. This is really an act of desperation. Thomas' emotions are running high, and he's not acting completely rationally. He has a bomb, and he's trying to make a bargain with WCKD. He suspects WCKD wants him. This is emphasized by Jansen who says: "Where's Thomas?" He might not like Thomas at this point, but he still wants him alive because Ava Paige wants him alive. Thomas threatens to blow himself up unless WCKD releases the immunes, but WCKD rejects his offer. Here's where Thomas being selfless to a fault has put him on the horns of a dilemma. If he kills himself, he accomplishes nothing. Yeah, he escapes WCKD, but he doesn't save the others. Saving the others is his goal. He never cares about himself. When the others indicate they are willing to die, too, to escape WCKD, Thomas has a tough choice to make. Does he kill them all? Again, yes, they escape WCKD, but Thomas really wants them to live and live free from WCKD. If he relents, then they are all under WCKD control. He doesn't want that, either. There is the dilemma. The choice should be the one that's the closest to the actual objective. That must be life, even if it would otherwise be unacceptable, under WCKD. While there's life, there's hope. But that doesn't seem to be the direction Thomas is inclining towards. It would have been completely at odds with Thomas' persona to kill them all. Theresa and Ava Paige plead with Thomas to relent. Ava Paige even tells him "Everything can go back to the way it was." In other words, Thomas can have his memory back and rejoin WCKD. She meant it, too, because Ava Paige was actually a foster mother for Thomas. WCKD's brutal murder of Mary coupled with this counteroffer from Ava Paige may be what was pushing Thomas towards blowing them all up. Thomas might have been tempted by the offer and repelled by it at the same time. Fortunately, Jorge rescues Thomas from this dilemma.
The tragic irony is that WCKD should have accepted Thomas' offer and let the other immunes go free.
"Scorch Trials" is a very good sequel to "Maze Runner."

I see some people mentioning The Divergent trilogy as a similar body of work, YA meets mainstream sci-fi - and they aren't wrong, I think it had way bigger budget than Maze Runner and I liked it best out of these 2010s YA based movies - but every person thinking about starting it deserves a fair warning - with higher budget came higher box office expectations and the franchise was axed. Story was divided into four movies and the fourth was never made so the story ends abruptly with unresolved cliffhanger and no conclusion whatsoever.

However, since WCKD was right on top of them, they could distinguish between immunes and Right Arm personnel. So, the attack was targeted. From what Jansen said, it also seems he was willing to sacrifice a few immunes to secure the base and eliminate the Right Arm.

i wonder if y'all can get through one of these three movies without being so pessimistic. "oh, this thing is reused" "oh, this movie did it better". news flash: it's not trying to be those movies, it's its own project. those are NOT the same mutated creatures as THG, they're grievers (which i thought maybe you'd be able to deduce bc u watched the first movie lmao). and those are NOT zombies, they're cranks; they're not dead, they never were dead, they won't be dead until they're killed - the Flare is a virus that attacks the brain, it doesn't kill the person it infects. not to mention y'all completely forgot about Winston being in TMR and called his death unoriginal... the book that this was based off of was released in 2010 - before TWD, before TLOU, and before WWZ. and THG was only released a year before TMR so i doubt the author took much inspiration from it and had probably been working on his OWN novel for a while. it really does suck to see people trying to dunk on this movie just bc they've already seen every other post-apocalyptic film/tv show without thinking that maybe this series inspired some of them. it was an incredibly popular book series (hence why it was adapted into movies) and really did revolutionize a lot of dystopian tropes that have been replicated by other series. but y'all don't care, do you? so what's the point of even watching the last movie? go give backhanded compliments to another series.

I think the plot in scorch trials what is too underrated already is: “Saving the world or saving the friends.” Thomas nor Teresa were wrong. Both wanted what’s best for other people. Teresa just thought bigger. I’m really glad I came across this and see people actually understanding her and taking a look at the whole storyline. Thank you! 🙏

🤣 I love these movies and the book series is even better, but the whole premise is a little crazy to me. Saving the human race by sacrificing the very humans that are the ones that will carry on the human race makes no sense to me. I can understand wanting to find a cure, but torturing and murdering young children who are the very essence of the next generation and who are already immune is literally not the way to go about it. There is nothing that justifies WCKD's brutual approach in finding a cure... nothing.

So, you would say the end does not justify the means. But, of course, other people in comments to these films believe the end does justify the means. What is good and what is evil? These films plumb the depths of human nature.
