Easily my favorite episode yet. Training junior-high and high-school age athletes is not an easy task. Major props to Jim for what he's been able to do with that football program. I'm finding out that coaching these kids in the weightroom is like trying to put out a forest fire with a squirt gun: you see a kid whose form needs corrected, so you run over to coach him and correct his form; you turn around and another kid needs fixed, so you run over and correct that one; then you turn around the kid who was lifting correctly a minute ago is back to doing the same shitty stuff he did before you corrected him! Every time you put out a flame, you move to put out another one, only to find the one behind you reignited! I knew that the transition from working with experienced training partners to coaching kids was going to be challenging, but WOW. It takes a LOT of patience!!!
Fellow Ohioan here, I absolutely loved this video, Jim has such a practical and level-headed approach to coaching youth. Occam’s razor, the simplest solution is usually correct.
Great podcast. I've been coaching for over 20 years and absolutely agree with your views on programming. I used to write 12 week S&C programs for clients early in my career and would usually end up re-writing 50% of it as we worked through it looool. Auto-regulation, knowing how to coach a client and when to change what and how are such key components to being a good coach. It's truly an art that only comes from years of experience.
Watching this on TV and got to the part of Jim talking about success. Logged on just to say this. You've changed my life Jim, and I'm sure as shit gonna pass your name to my future kids when I'm making them strong. For all that I'm concerned, you *are* immortal.
That Jim built that culture where goblet squats are THE thing is awesome! Gah, if I wasn't old and lazy, I'd be inspired to set aside the barbell today and grab and heavy dumbbell instead!
The part about self-esteem that liberals don't seem to understand is that self-esteem comes from the self, and the self needs challenged. They also forget the fact that men and women are different so self-esteem applies to men where women they base what they feel about themselves off of their peers; so they have community esteem, which that makes it wrong Again to make blanket statements for individuals

Jim and Dave need to dual write a book on life lessons, lessons learned and why it’s all gonna be ok in the end.
I normally listen on Spotify and will do the rest of this (15 mins in do far) but that intro is sick AF!
Still here 1hr 10mins, too late here, need sleep, enthralling conversation has me hooked though...
