This is a method showing how shafts could have been made 500 years ago or more, so we assume they had saws etc to be able to make a square section of wood to start with.
@@longbowsyeah thats what i assumed. But you never know, i thought there might be some struktural benefit that I’m too dumb to get😅 Thanks for a great video!
Hi there Richard my name is Kevin and first of i would like to say thankyou for making this channel ive only just come across it, so i have alot of videos to catch up on. Since i was child ive always wanted to make myself a longbow ever since watching robin hood on tv as a child i spent many days finding branches of trees and tying string to it to make a bow so i could hunt down the sheriff of Nottingham 😂 but ive always wanted to make a real one but never new how to go about it and to be perfectly honest im little nervous to start on my own. I have couple of questions and i hope you dont mind if i ask.. Q1). Could you possible explain or make a video explaining the differences between a English victorian yew longbow for competition and a English yew warbow that was made around King Richard 1st era..is the draw length the only difference between the two? Q2). Do you offer a workshop day/week were we can come and learn to make a bow with you, and if so what would the cost be to do so.. Sorry to bombard you with the questions..
Glad you like the videos. I have explained the difference in many videos, having made 400 I dont think I can remember which ones, have a watch and you will find it eventually. No, our courses are invitiation only at present, we try to teach via our videos and website www.howtomakealongbow.co.uk
I don't know if I'm asking this right, but how do you know how much weight an arrow can tolerate? Say a bow is 90lbs how would you then match that arrow with the correct bow? Thanks for your time.
I have been working with poplar recently and I can say that working with this wood is wonderful. But unfortunately the spine of the arrows they gave me were too weak for my 55# bows.
@@longbows In my case, it was poplar that I had collected in the forest, transformed into a board and then into dowel. Unfortunately, in my case, I have the impression that it was not dry enough. I think I'll dry it longer and start again. It's a really easy wood to work with. 🙂
Running them way to thin. 3/8 should get 90 easy. 7/16 gets my well in to the 150# or better. (Yes I actually use spine that high)For drying leave it between 3/4 and 1in stacked to or weighted to dry flat. Takes 9to 12 months for typical 8"x7ft board of poplar to air dry. The longer the better.
Thanks for the sub! if you can help the channel in any way, like commenting and hitting like on my other videos that will really help the chances of me continuing on with this project, thanks again for making my day.

Another great video.
Did you make your own fletching jig?
thanks! Yes I did, we sell them.
Question, how often do you sharpen the blade of your hand plane?
when it feels blunt
Are there any advantages to starting with a square piece of wood rather than a round one?
Absolutely beautiful end result

A great informative video as usual!! Can i ask what is the name of the tape you used, and do you know if it will stick to bamboo shafts? Thankyou!
thanks, glad you liked it. it's the fletching tape that we sell on our website, I have no idea if it will work on bamboo, sorry.

Very nice to watch. How much of a perfect circular crossection do the shaft have to have?
Thanks. Good enough to fight your enemy in battle.
Nice 👍

What is the red wire like thing that you used to attach the feathers with?
perhaps you mean this?...www.longbowandarrow.co.uk/fletching-tape-86-p.asp
@@longbows yes, thank you!
No problem
what feathers and what thread did you use?
the ones on my website www.longbowandarrow.co.uk/
does the "RIGHT WING FULL LENGTH FEATHER FLETCHINGS" is it just one feather?
@@longbowsare the "RIGHT WING FULL LENGTH FEATHER FLETCHINGS" just one feather?, also, what was that knot you did on the end of the fletching's?
the right wing full length feathers are 49p each, meaning one feather
@@longbows thanks one more question what was that tape called that you used to cut feathers and what knot did you use for tying off the binding?

Most of the Poplar shafts we sell are suitable up to about 90 lbs or so, that's based on 3/8
