Molokini is one of the best places to scuba. I’ve seen pelagic mantas, humpbacks, black tips, and smaller critters like lobsters and nudibranchs. Reef mantas are a common sight but you’ll see them only one out of ten dives. Per your comment they are wild animals and they will show up when they want to. If you want to increase the odds go out for a manta swim on the big island. There’s a 90% chance you’ll see a manta.

Great video of my new everyday workday! I know I am very lucky to work up there. As for clothing, layers is good, always a hat. Inevitably, it does depend where you are from as to how the cold affects you…I’m from the UK, so Haleakala is simply a ‘walk in the park’ 😂😂😂Whereas if you’re from warmer climes, you will really feel it, especially if it’s cloudy and windy. Conversely, you can also get sunburnt up there! Enjoy.

I went the next year, and still have two vouchers to go again because we didn't see any on that trip either. I was walking on the rock beach in Seward, AK and saw lots of whales from the shore. Some were only a hundred yards off the beach. But my whale watching tours have not been successful!

Wherever your hotel/condo is, start early. Like, leave by 2-3am depending on where you are staying. Haleakala is a national park so unless they have special rules for covid you should be fine just to get to the gate and pay the fee. But don't let google maps fool you with the distance. It may look like it's only a few miles to the top, but it is a long and arduous journey on mainly "two cow road" and is mostly switchbacks. Also, please don't speed. Our State Bird the Nene Goose has a habit up there, and too many have already been lost to well-meaning tourists who don't realize that there are native animals who dwell at that elevation.
But also, fuck Mongoose. Run those bitches over.

We just traveled to Maui, Oahu & Big Island with a family of 4, going through all the Hawaii Government hoops & tests. My wife is vaccinated with 2 doses already but no one cared about it, still had to go through everything. 4 tests in 11 days with the overstuffed Government employees in full force everywhere! On the plus side, no crowds anywhere & no traffic jams although the prices seemed artificially inflated everywhere (hotels, rental cars, restaurants, golf courses, gas, grocery). We stayed near Kahului Airport. Each Covid Test costs $120-$180 out of pocket 'per person' per Island. Half of the online info on Hawaii Govt website is incomplete or out of date. They dont allow you not to pay just coz your Medical insurance provider is approved, one has to do that later to get re-imbursement. So, getting test appointments in time (no earlier than 72 hours of your flight departure & getting results before your flight), going through the tests (driving to, parking, strangers putting swabs in your nostrils) & the post-test process every time you go to an island is TOUGH! Starting this week, Mau will Covid-test you before & after you arrive at Maui. On top of it, Maui Government superpowers ask you to download an app so that they can track you & if you came close to any other person who tested Covid Positive, so they can come get you. No kidding. Its called AlohaSafe alert app & its mandatory. By the end of the trip, I was tired of the passive-aggressive plastic-smiley greetings of Aloha & then reading out the Long list of things that you can not do, due to Covid. Many resorts & places are still closed. We saw so many food trucks & roadside small shops shutdown. These poor people. The Southwest Airlines crew to Hawaii was like Jail Wardens :) ; they made it absolutely clear many many times, that masks are needed at all times or you will be kicked off. All this said, the trip was good for us primarily because it was our first trip (& my last) to Hawaii, no crowds anywhere & the weather was gorgeous. Hawaii is naturally gifted so it's easy to see why its people are spoilt & think they are so special. For some reason, we had issues with rental cars everywhere, it was not smooth & more expensive (even without the crowds). I travel all over mainland & can tell you by simple comparison that everything is just super expensive or you get far lower quality of service for the same price. For example, no Gold service except in Maui. Infrastructure is not that great. I can see that with crowds & more cars on the road, Hawaii can not handle it, most roads are single lane with even some freeways having a speed limit of 45mph (Oahu)! Our Roadtrip to Hana (Maui) was great (with less traffic), although we liked the other (more treacherous) North side/ 340 road of Maui/ Kahakuloa. I can easily see that the Road to Hana becoming a nightmare if there were too many cars on it. We did helicopter ride, played Golf, beaches (Kapalua, BigBeach/ Mckenna, Keawakapu). Somehow we liked the Oahu beaches more. Haleakala crater was covered with clouds. Nakalele blowhole is overrated. Everything is super expensive, even more than Oahu & Big Island. Good luck folks!

It’s too bad this beautiful video didn’t age well with the masks. Here you were at 10,000 feet, outside & breathing some of the freshest air on the planet. We will look back at COVID times as the dumbest time in history. Hawaii’s rules were dumber than most.

There is bad news and good news. The bad news is that we are all sinners and we have all sinned once and for all. Therefore, as sinners, as punishment for our sins, we must go to Hell and suffer forever there. The good news is that God sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, to this world, and Jesus Christ, who loves us so much no matter what, took our sins and took the punishment of our sins by getting nailed to the cross and dieing on the cross for us, to save us from going to hell and so we can have eternal life in Heaven with God. Then on the third day God raised Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior back from the dead.

Please, please, PLEASE DO NOT AIR B&B IN HAWAII!!! I know you had the best intentions and you want people to be able to experience Maui without breaking the bank, but using Air B&B and similar companies is extremely detremental to our economy. The problem is this: Hawaii (obviously) has a finite amount of space, and it is (again, obviously) already extremely expensive to rent/own land. Locals already have a hard enough time competing with outside competition (read: mainlanders with more money) to try to rent or buy a place to live. What is happening is people who own properties who would once upon a time rent/lease places to local people who live here for extended periods of time have found that while they could get, let's say, $1,100 a month for a small one bedroom, could instead get maybe $120-$150 a night through an Air B&B. What is happening is while niche tourism is thriving, the local economy is plummeting. I have adult friends in their 30's and 40's who have to live together (like six people in one small house) because there is literally no other option for housing. I myself cannot move back to my own island not (just) because of the prices, but because there is literally no place to rent. And the option to buy a home? You're looking at several HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS. It's not sustainable for an island. We don't have any more land. I'm sure you never thought about it, not many mainlanders do, but if as you said in your video that you want to show how to visit Maui on a budget, please do not encourage this as a viable option. Instead, try condos and/or timeshares. They are already built and for short term stays, and they are much cheaper than hotels. And many of them have the same amenities, such as pools and tennis courts. And yes, plenty of them have boogie boards, snorkels, fins and whatnot stocked in them, because the people who own them obviously love Hawaii and want you to love us too. Mahalo Nui Loa.

I'm always glad for anyone to experience Maui, but if you are going to make the decision to share things about our Island I would hope that you take the time to research/share some of the key points of things that you flashed across the screen. For instance: 1: the summit of Haleakala is at an elevation that you are actually able to see the curvature of the earth, which is why you were able to see the Big Island- 400 miles away. You cannot see the Big Island from sea level. (So f-off flat earthers)
2: you so very briefly showed a "plant" which happens to be the Maui Silver Sword, which only grows in one place on the entire planet- the top of Haleakala. It takes 75 years for it to grow, blooms once, and then dies. You used as a backdrop. 3: We are not a undiscovered race. You don't need special permission to film us like we are some kind of strange species. Want to include us in your video? Just ask. Which brings me to another point: you spoke of Aloha and how it means so much more than "Hello, goodbye, and I love you" what we also have is what we call "Aloha Spirit" which broken down basically means that we are more than happy to share our culture and our love of our native home with anyone who would like to learn. Just ask! We literally will make friends with you in the supermarket (Foodland!) and invite you to a potluck at our house. 4: So glad that you guys were able to go whale watching. But again, let's talk about some simple information. The whales that come to Hawaii in the winter months are Humpback whales that are migrating from their summer feeding grounds in Alaska down along the coast of California to give birth to their young in our warm but nutrient sparse waters. In fact, the whales do not eat anything the entire time they are here (Oct-Nov until around March). There is no krill to feed on, but there also no predators to attack their young. So they gorge themselves before they start their journey and survive on their blubber for the months they are here. And yes! They are amazing to see! And they love to show off. They are highly intelligent and show a wide range of emotions.

Been on 3 separate 7-10 day trips on Maui, Kauai, and Big Island. From what I understand (and you may very well know this by now), the best place in Hawaii to swim with mantas is on the west coast of the Big Island...specifically Kailua-Kona. I think they are more active at night, so they do night tours (with lighting). We didn't do it while we were there a few years back, but it's on our return list. Maui was great, but personally I preferred Big Island overall for it's diversity (all the islands are diverse, but Big Island has the added allure of active volcanoes). The biggest Big Island drawback are the vast distances (although that dilutes the crowds), and the relatively small number of beaches.

  • @kainoe09
    @kainoe09 3 года назад

A quick Google search would have alerted you to the fact that Manta Rays are notorious for being elusive. The Big Island is most popular for being able to experience them. Also, not trying to be an asshole, but you're literally in the pacific ocean off the coast of Maui. Who tf cares that you didn't see one particular see creature?? YOU'RE IN MAUI. Do you know how lucky you are?? I'm a Maui native who happens to be stuck in Northern Ny, and I would give anything to be back in my home. I get the pretext of your video, but come on. Quit finding negative things about your trip, especially when your "review" can detrementally impact the local business who took you out on the trip. Even if you didn't explicitly mention the company, there are people who will take the time to figure out who they are and then avoid them under the pretense that they didn't live up to your expectations. And I don't want to hear about "the brochure". If I had a nickel for every thing people "saw in a brochure" for Maui, and Hawaii in general, you would think that we all live in grass huts, trade coconuts for land, and eat spam all day.
I mean, we do smash spam like it's our job, but that's beside the point.
Also, spam is delicious. And I'll die defending it.

For everyone asking about rental cars and ubers, there's a shortage of transportation options on Maui right now. Tourist levels are back to pre-pandemic mass tourism numbers but Hawaii is still following all covid safety regulations. Long wait times at restaurants because capacity is limited to 30-50% depending on venue. Masks are required in public (yes even outside) unless you are 6 feet from others at all times. Rental car companies reduced inventory last year due to covid now they can't keep up with the current surge in demand. (There were far too many rental cars on this small island before coviid, hopefully we don't get them all back.) If you vacation here this year, please respect Hawaii's covid safety regulations. Also, please get vaccinated before your trip. Hotel, restaurant, rental car, etc. workers come in contact with hundreds of visitors per day. Enjoy your vacation but wear a mask and follow the rules.

    Really beautiful, well edited video.
So I admit that I’m one of those that suggested more interrraction with locals, but maybe I’m wrong. You guys have a great little travel bubble that includes Pepper, and it works. You two aren’t extroverts or entertainers, so working in a conversation with other travelers or locals might seem staged, no matter if more interesting.
Keep up the beautiful travel videos

I didn't eat fish or drink pineapple juice for a LONG time after coming back from Hawaii. It's just so fresh there and delicious that it made what was on the mainland taste so subpar by comparison. I enjoy them again now, but man, that goodness stays with you a long time. It's just the best there is. When you have Mahi Mahi caught fresh that same day, or pineapple juice just made, you can just tell the difference.

Agreed. My wife and loved it so much on our trip in 2019 we decided to change our plans and do it again. It's a night dive/snorkel and you watch them do loops as they feed on plankton.

I love the instances when you guys visit places that I've been because it's so neat to see "alternate" expereinces of places I have also experienced IRL.... if that makes any kind of sense lol
When I went to the top of Haleakala I was NOT prepared for the cold haha I wore sandals, capris and a flannel over a tshirt haha but I missed sunrise despite my best attemps (even with my best intentions I will probably always be a night owl lol) so I went up the mountain at like 8am still cold but with the sun it was def not as cold. BUT I did catch the Ranger Talk which was awesome. Didn't even know about the audio tour thing! That's so cool!
Asking people for persmission to film them is so hard for me -and that's just inside the US. I can't imagine how much harder it would be in other places. If I already feel comfortable with a person then I'll just say oh are you comfortable being on camera before I start filming, but I'm still working on trying to ask that of people I just met lol

Sorry about your “Manta Ray“ trip. I have dived Maui a few times and never saw them there. The only place I ever saw them was on a night dive in Kona. You may see an occasional one during the day, however a night dive is where you will see the biggest group of them. It is for sure a bucket list thing for you to do. We used Jack’s Diving Locker in Kona if you make it to that island.

I'm part of a local dive group called Maui Mantas- and we definitely see mantas as well as spotted eagle rays- even when snorkeling. As always, it's hit or miss, but so awesome every time it happens. Also, close encounter with a monk seal was quite a memorable dive!

Did you just say no one had seen Manta on Maui? or just among those in your boat? Because my diver friends on Maui have seen them, a lot, and they have videos to prove it. I was surprised by your comment that is why I want to clarify. There are Manta on Maui. - But yeah there's more of then on the Big Island. And the Magma - also on the Big Island :)

Maui, known also as “The Valley Isle,” is the second largest Hawaiian island. The island beloved for its world-famous beaches, the sacred Iao Valley, views of migrating humpback whales (during winter months), farm-to-table cuisine and the magnificent sunrise and sunset from Haleakala.

Please be respectful of the Aina. Especially during covid. Too many times have we had well-intentioned visitors end up hurting our local areas. Just any fyi, if something is closed, or you see the word "Kapu" in front of something that you want to explore, please do not go further. There are dozens of places that my friends and I used to go that are no longer accessable due to overuse by naive tourists. Rule of thumb: If you wouldn't do it in your hometown, please don't do it in ours. This includes wearing Speedos in Walmart with nothing else but a tank top and weird birkenstocks. No one wants to see that.
