John Chatterton is one of the best deep sea divers and narrators of the 20th and 21st century. He has led expeditions to all of the most famous shipwrecks and filmed many of the most important findings of our times. He is an inspiration to many people and has brought many things to light that history would've most likely never have revealed to us about these shipwrecks. The man is a legend in the diving community.

book was really good, diving a Uboat that deep stretching safety to its limits, amazing it was a tool box in the after torpedo room that had the boat's hull number stamped on it. Trying to find where I (mis)placed my copy of Shadow Divers.
Excellent footage, sir. After reading Shadow Divers and The Last Dive, this footage provided a great visual reference. Thank you and Mr Kohler for the honor and respect you display for the sailors who perished in these wrecks and providing closure for their families.
That and "The Last Dive" which I read first. TLD is rather predictable though, anybody would know that these two would eventually get each other killed with their childish attitudes and antics. It's OK to act that way if you don't value your life very much, it's not OK to act that way and leave a lonely mother and widow behind.
There is another video in here where his strobe light fails before he gets back to it. It was the Andrea Dorea, and at the end he mentions having a u-boat after. So, yeah. Device fails? Deploy it in pairs.

Me too! I found myself holding my breath and becoming anxious during the dives. I also found myself weeping during the tragedies and fatalities and during the explanations about the German sailors who perished on the sub.
Everything you read in the book Shadow Divers comes to life as you view John's trip through the sub. You really understand how dangerous and difficult it was to dive in such an environment. You can really see how that silt is so awful when it's disturbed. Scary!
@@harrison6082 I think the answer must be yes, on the basis that any WW2 unexploded bombs found on land can explode, and we are told there is a ship laden with WW2 munitions sunk just off the coast here in the UK which if it went up would cause major damage to a town on the nearby coast. It's near the Thames Estuary, I think the town is in Essex.

Great video and narration. The book "Shadow Divers" has been a great inspiration for me. I took the name Seeker as the name of the sailboat I am building.
I have the audio version. I seen John & Captan Dan of the DV Seeker at the Beneath The Sea Expo up in NJ. They said Captain Tom Bogan of the Bounty Hunter came across it on his depth finder & gave the numbers(location) to either Captain Dan or John. But I believe it was Captain Dan & he called John & they put together a team to go check it out. The audio version is pretty good & worth listening to on a day long drive. Nice vid!

Seeing the bones and skulls inside a claustrophobic shell while being half drunk on Nitrogen would be terrifying. It's no wonder so many divers perished trying to identify this sub.
Your daring penetrations to identify this wreck were probably what got me interested in squeezing into tight spaces years ago. To this day it still has to be one of the most ballsy efforts considering the depth and the state of the wreck which was falling apart.
"I guess I was somewhat nervous." I've been diving since 1987 and I was so nervous watching this, I broke out in a sweat. That deep and by himself. I read Shadow Divers when it first came out and have read it twice more since then. Incredible story.
Someone recommended “ Shadow divers “ to me few days ago and i was so hooked that i finished in 2 days. What an amazing journey..and some incredible life lessons from Mr. John Chatterton.
It is an ok book, a bit too long though, and the author seems to be in love with John, because I could not finish the chapter about Chatterton without rolling my eyes every paragraph

Shadow divers is an excellent book. When Chatterton mentioned taking the video of the torpedo room I though to myself "I wish I could see that!" and look! Now I am!
You're right. It is a glove. Certainly the remains are in better shape than the ones that were on the Titanic. Only their clothes remain. There is another wreck they've discovered in the Baltic and the remains are very well preserved.

The only reason they continued to enter the sub was to locate definitive evidence of what U-boat it really was, because, as it turns out, the war records were wrong and listed this sub as being sunk off Gibraltar. They did it to provide the correct information to history and closure to the families of the crew.
I saw this video many times,yet it is compelling,and of course the narration of Mr.Chatterton makes it interesting,no matter how many times you will see it.

Read the book, Shadow Divers many years ago, When I visit used bookstores I still seek another copy for I've owned 6 copy at one time or another only to have given all of them away to others that have never read them. What a Scary way to die,but they also took many life's with them. My dad was sunk of the Fjord of Arcángel un Norway 1942, he survived obviously,but he told me they would attack as wolf packs mercilessly.

Tremendous video. I read Shadow Divers 10 years ago and I have always wondered what the sub’s interior looked like. You would have to have perfect neutral buoyancy, along with disciplined fin and body movements and breathing to avoid stirring up sentiment. Although solo diving is usually a no no for safety purposes, in such a restricted, confined area such as that, it would be necessary.
For those of you who are non-divers, think of the best athlete you know of in any sport. John Chatterton is two levels above that in the technical diving community.

Did the wreck look like it was dragged along the bottom? Are there trenches from the propellers ? That’s a ghost ship! I had seen a submarine washed up on a jetty in 1984 during Hurricane Josephine! It was off the jetty on Long Beach island! Right at the Barnegat Lighthouse! 43 miles straight out into the ocean

Shadow Divers is easily in my top 3 books of all time. So glad that we get to see video of an actual dive into the sub

Dan Kelly but feldman and the Rouses were not using trimix when they had their incidents.

There was one survivor. He fell ill just before the sub left port. He lived long enough to see his boat discovered.

Some say it’s safer to deep dive alone, less chance of panic. If your buddy panics the risk is they’ll do something to get you killed.

Did the wreck look like it was dragged along the bottom? Are there trenches from the propellers ? That’s a ghost ship! I had seen a submarine washed up on a jetty in 1984 during Hurricane Josephine! It was off the jetty on Long Beach island! Right at the Barnegat Lighthouse! 43 miles straight out into the ocean
