      @@garygwin1741 Well Tarja is the FIRST, it is like the first love. I went through that Tarja phase myself. But Floor is her own self. If she were trying to be Tarja 2.0 - we would be watching a tired copycat show. Instead this is an original sound. And yeah, I do think that several of their modern renditions of Tarja classics have been... ok. But others opened up (to me at least) even more of their beauty and character. Nobody else than Floor, with her sublime personality added to the sheer talent, could really handle that job at this point.

The heavy mid part goes back and forth between A and E minor/dorian. And the "water the field, surrender to the earth" -line sounds minor to me, as well, I think it is emphasising the key of A minor. There are just more filler tracks and ballads (which dream theater aren't super good at). Distance over time sounds like nearly every other dream theater album. I saw them on their past two tours where they played the astonishing in its entirety, and scenes from a memory in its entirety. Honestly I would classify dream theater as one of those bands who are very good technically, but not always the best at composition. Yes, it's Nightwish because it has the "Nightwish DNA", but they are exploring different sounds. We have Nightwish 1.0 with Tarja, Nightwish 2.0 with Anette, Nightwish 3.0 when Floor joined as front woman and this is kind of "Nightwish 3.5". If we consider the main thematic around this new album, the song as itself is... Kind of expected, but at the same time, is rich, energic, positive, and dared to be different, without losing what gave Nightwish their hype and fame.

      Same here, we have a german band 'Faun' who make medieval (ish) celtic (ish) folk (ish) stuff. All the 6 members play at least 3 instruments, 4 of them are vocalists (not all of them sing at every song though). Their concerts are always a stage full of different instruments and a bunch of microphones, and the members just switch between them all the time :D
      This one reminds me particularly of the songs 'Sonnenreigen - Lughnasadh' (Roundelay of the sun) and 'Federkleid' (Feather Dress/Feathers) from their album 'Midgard'. It seems similar in text, video images and especially the feeling/mood.

    I read somewhere that Tuomas did intentionnally put serious/grave lyrics on a 'happy' tune, and the major key helps conveying that feeling. I actually quite enjoy hearing Troy singing on such a song, I love Floor, but sometimes I'm so taken by her voice that I forget to listen to the instruments... Here I can enjoy the instrumental behind the voice!

  • @ebbenielsen7
    @ebbenielsen7 4 года назад +3

    If I were to be pedantic, then you could argue that most Nightwish songs are not in minor keys, but in a so-called church key that has certain minor key similarities. Just like a lot of other rock music. The fact that Nightwish uses some of these church scales (especially Doric) also gives the modal touch without the traditional functional harmonics for major and minor music - so that the chords are also an expression of the modal and church keys at the same time. .But exciting and nice that you get a little nerdy in your reaction. Thank you.

    Thinking major and minor keys, in my experience metal and rock very rarely use major keys, except for US-style AOR - Journey, REO Speedwagon and the rest. I know Deep Purple's catalogue inside out and I don't think there's a single original song completely in a major key.
    I have to say though that to me many of the saddest songs are in major keys. As I write my wife's playing Hamburg Song by Keane - one of the saddest and most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Oh, and now she's playing It Must Have Been Love by Roxette!
    Keep putting the technical bits in. X

  • @gakon0011

    I don't know much about technology, and music. Just a personal feeling. Quite a lot of people said that they didn't like the first half of the song, and I found it quite interesting. You can feel the gradual change in the song, the beginning sounds like a labor rhythm (of the farmer who is harvesting the crop), and when other factors add up, it seems that the work is near the end, everyone can talk a little bit, the kids can run in the field to pick up the still scattered grains and seeds. And when night came, they danced by the bonfire to celebrate the bumper harvest. I can picture it as a movie when listening to this song. That's why I'm a bit disappointed that the official video is not what I envisioned. But about the song I feel totally fine. I like the joy of the melody (although the lyrics are not entirely). Joy can be as deep as sadness as well as all other emotions. I can imagine the new album will explore many aspects of human emotions. Noise is quite angry and bewildered. And this song is cheerful and serene. I had to use google translate to write this paragraph but actually my thoughts were too complicated to write in a language I was not fluent in. Sorry to those who try to read this comment

    All I want to see is Floor, adorably dancing onstage, as Troy takes the lead on this song.
    And it just goes to show the versatility of Tuomas' genius in his composition ability.
    Edit: The lyrics that talk about "going back to a single grain" talks about every person being able to be traced back to a common ancestor -- not to mention that the Earth aspect is an embodiment of the Christian philosophy of "ashes to ashes, dust to dust."
    And another song that I feel is a major key would be Elan, along with Edema Ruh. Both songs have a happy feel to them.

    It was different, but I really liked it. It combines symphonic metal and Celtic folk, both of which are favorites of mine, and, for a moment, it took me to a different time, a different realm. A mellow pagan pilgrimage into nature with a hint of "I Want My Tears Back." Was it purposeful? I think so, it was a counterpoint to "Noise" in that it celebrated nature, after "Noise" showed the destruction we wrought when we industrialized the world, and more and more of nature vanished as a result, and now, so many walk around with their heads engrossed in their screens that they no longer see the beauty that a single moment in time can be. Anyway, I'm rambling, a great reaction as always, and great analysis!

I instantly liked the track, maybe because the Nightwish-tracks and the original scores I mentioned are some of my favourites in general.*
