Some colourful new handle materials as well as some new steels that will make some awesome blades. Also we want you to let us know what you like to see on our knives and what you don't like, do you like the colourful modern materials or are you more a fan of traditional materials? we want you to get involved to help us make the knives you want to see.
    The new heat treatment book that ben mentions is available through this link

    I'm a bit of a traditionalist, but I have to say they are both stunning and I'm sure they will appeal to the younger generations getting into bushcraft etc. Looking forward to seeing how the new steel works out! Thanks for sharing, regards Mick

    Gday Ben and Lois. Those new handles are funky as. Lots of pros to having them in your range. Low maintenance is a good side but there will always be the love of timber grain for some folks. Well done. Hope you are both well. Regards Andrew 🦘🦘😁👍

    The colorful handle material is nice, however, i am a big fan of natural wood. Ironwood being my favorite. Really enjoy seeing your awesome skills, and the masterpieces that you are producing. I will be ordering that custom build probably in a couple of months.

    The new handle material looks sharp! Well worth playing around some more. It's a step away from the traditional look but I wouldn't hesitate to purchase a knife with a colourful bright handle and it's a functional feature for a knife in the bush. I'm a big fan of the blaze orange knives you build. An old friend of mine would often carry a simple Mora knife around his neck that was Swedish military issue and it had a bright orange handle which totally made sense to me.

  • @Dynotop1a

    I think the material is rather pretty!
    It reminds me of agates, which are often banded and colorful in a very similar way! Here in Florida, agatized coral is the state fossil/stone and the bands often glow a bluish color like your “Blue Mountain” knife when put under a UV light.
    Oh, I’m also pretty interested to hear your thoughts on MagnaCut, so I’ll look forward to following along!

    • @Dynotop1a
      @Dynotop1a 2 года назад

      There’s a neat RUclips channel called “Paleocris” that shows this Agatized Coral stuff pretty well. You’d probably like their videos too since they also forage for wild food occasionally do other activities that crossover with Bushcraft.
      It’s mostly cool fossils though, if you happen to give the channel a look sometime!

    For a mideum size outdoor knife, either it's a hunting knife or general use, I prefer Ballbearing steel or Vanadis 4 Extra and of course a good heat tretment and proper geometry, symetry and profile shape ,on both the edge and the rest of the blade, For the handle, micarta or wood and sheaths, I would like them to function, as Morakniv and Fallkniven Sheaths do, means the blade has to have room in the sheath, so that it can be storied dirty while collecting wild edibles for example. As also, it has to be made of plastic and not leather or Kydex.
    Handle ergos has to be similar to Lionsteel knives, like the M4 ir some Bark Rivers, Moras also have some of the best handle designs, that don't just provide good ergos, but it also makes the edge be more stable, more secure and more relaxing for prolongued use.
    Ben's knives, are spot on. Some of the best you can find out there!

      Magnacut has the same level of durability and edge stability as V4E while being stainless at 62 hrc. It’s an amazing material.

    • @greekveteran2715
      @greekveteran2715 2 года назад

      @@drunknnirish That's not true. Marketing always makes a product appear better than it is, to sell it easier, to sell more. When it comes to steels, you can never have it all. it's always a trade. Vanadis 4 Extra is more durable, than most steels out there. In terms of strength, it's more durable than CPM 3V, it also has the best edge stability. Magnacut, can't much neither that edge stability.
      I can prove, that I speak about facts, can you prove, what you say is true?

    • @greekveteran2715

      @@drunknnirish Magnucut: Better stainless properties, a bit more edge retention,
      Vanadis 4 Extra: Better toughness and way better edge stability. This is the durability you claim. Link: ruclips.net/video/vC6NV084qlg/видео.html

      I wouldn’t use anything Bark River makes as a hard stick to measure anything.

    • @greekveteran2715
      @greekveteran2715 2 года назад +1

      @@drunknnirish Do you have any proof? Do you even had experiene with Vanadis 4 extra, or a degree in Metallurgy that I own since the 90's ? Have you ever made a knife? You're Egoism will never let you see the truth. Your opinion is only what year head or read which is only marketing advertising a product to sell it. Magnucut is a harder and stainless steel, that both, make a weaker steel, now go open a book and get some education before you expose your self again.

    Hi Guys
    Henry is a great guy to deal with ,handles look well cool 👍 picked up some magnacut a few weeks back from Richard,yet to test some pieces yet but have only had good feedback from other knife makers regarding it. Check out knife steel nerds page all relevant HT is on there Ben,but then I guess you will still do some test pieces to get desired HRC for different applications,look forward to your tests .

    • @BenOrford
      @BenOrford  2 года назад +7

      Do you mean how much experience with this new steel? If so non so far but on Heattreatment on other steels about 18 years of experience, so think a lot of that will be transferable to this new magnacut. Getting back to what I know would mean never trying new steels so happy to push myself.
