- Really enjoying working with the AEB-L steel. Grinds beautifully, not so prone to rust when compared to carbon steels, it's also tougher and has slightly better edge retention compared to most carbon steels. What's not to like.
The only negative is the heat treatment is just a bit more involved.
I austenetize the blades at 1060 Celcius for 15 minutes then plate quench using lots of pressure (4 heavy G Clamps screwed down hard). The blades come out immaculately flat, I have found without good pressure on the plates the blanks can warp!
Then straight from the plates into the dry ice slurry for an hour.
Two tempers @ 2hrs each at 170 Celcius results in final hardness of 60.5 to 61 Hrc.
My knife making journey began watching your videos 8 years ago always awaiting the next one
Thank you for sharing your process makes me a better maker
A joy and pleasure watching you construct knives. Thanks for sharing your craftmanship.
Never wanted a knife so badly as I do these. Exquisite craftsmanship Mr Jack!
Always a good day when I see you've put up a new video. Thank you for taking the time to show your process.
Just incredible sandy how you produce these and how much work goes into each and every one of them. I am a very proud Jacklore owner and as long as I have air in my lungs will never part with them ♥️👍♥️👍 keep up the fantastic work and we hope your feeling a bit better sandy ♥️ love to Mandy and Annie 😉👍
Outstanding video Sandy, love these workshop process overviews. Thanks!
I still watch these knife builds with the same fascination as I did about the time you started this channel. (I look at the Jacklore I got in 2020 the same way as well)
Always fun watching a good craftsman work. You have a very nice process Sandy. Thanks for showing how the work goes.
Love your workshop vids and feel honored to have had a personal tour.
Some beautiful timber for those scales.
Thank you for sharing your processes and skills.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge & skill, Great Videos
Hi Sandy, knife making, it is what it is mate, interesting, i like watching the processes and builds, I've not made one for a few years now. All the best to you and your family.
🥰 Love watching a master craftsman at work 🤩 keep it up Sandy.
Your technique and skills are flawless. It is no surprise that your knives are so astounding. Thank you so much for allowing us to view you doing your magic. Take care, see you on the next one.
Very cool look at your process, I utilize jigs every opportunity I get, makes everything more uniform and quicker.
Thanks!
Great to see more knives Sandy, hope to get one I’ll keep watching ur page
I've been enjoying AEB-L lately as well. So far no warping during heat treat, probably due to the aggressive plate clamping method I use. Best of all my customers seem to enjoy it!
Nice,
thanks Mr. Sandy Cheers matey hope all is well ❤ were is your apprentice when you need him lol 😂 Cheers 🍻
Great to see a master at work love and dedication make your knives stunning thankyou for sharing all the best Sandy from a long time subscriber.
intro, ASMR style, liking it, guessing it's needed after looking after your young apprentice?
You are getting the hang of this knife making malarkey now 👍😂🤣😂🤣
Hahaa, I've had enough practice. By the time I get really good it will be time to retire:)
Non-glamorous perhaps, but always fascinating. I know you don’t use them any more, Mr. Jacklore, but I would be interested❤ be to get some insight into how your signature Wonkey Donkey pins were made.
Absolutely wonderful, exactly the knife I want, but I never get to purchase one…. So flustrating I’ll keep hoping
It's not all about the Knife... it's everything involved down to 12000 wet/dry and cleaners.
It's easy to see you're a talented skilled Artisans Craftsman of no small scale, not just design but detail of manufacture/construction/balance... nothing is overlooked in smallest detail and not just in the Knife.
No wonder a Jacklore is so prized... even given this age and the Law...!
Were I still able to Hunt, I'd try hard to purchase one.. another issue a right to Arms.
👍👍👍👍👍
Just wondering whether an ‘after market’ change like this , or similar, would be regarded as a mod that comprises your insurance on the van? Enjoyed the video by the way, nicely shot, helpful narrations on the work and layout. May your batteries never run flat!
What did you use to glue scales to the g10? Brilliant vid as always.
Great work sir. I make some Bushcraft knives as well learned a lot from you thank you. I wanted to ask if you ever have trouble with stabilized wood shrinking. I have a few that the wood shrank slightly leaving the 01 proud of the scales slightly. Is there a way to prevent this. Thank you for all your videos.
Make sure the wood is completely dry before the stabilising process begins. You will need a vacuum chamber and a pressure pot. I generally pull a vacuum and leave the blocks submerged for atleast a day, then transfer to pressure pot, blocks again submerged and apply plus 4 or 5 bar and leave them for as long as possible, even a week or longer will do no harm before you cure them in the oven. Stabilised this way in thermo setting resin they should not move much.
Hi Sandys, what kind/brand of glue are you using? Thanks for the great video. Best regards to Britain
Hi I use high strength CA glue for the liners and Gflex 650 when I glue up the scales
Very nice im sold. Deal. How much? ...hi Sandy still loving your vids on which ever subject its on. I doubt it my universal credit world stretch to that but let me know if you have any 2nds or rejects for cheap. Kind regards Simon.
Looks very nice, Sandy. But you used to use sf100 before AEB-L. I have used much AEB-L but looking on SF100 because they have other thicknesses.
They are chemical the same. But have you noticed any difference? Or why the change to AEB-L? Thanks, stay safe!
Nothing wrong with SF100 but my supplier didn't have it in 4mm thickness whereas AEB-L does come in 4mm
What glue do you use?
G flex epoxy
