FREE Guard Tutorial: Hidden Tang Knife Build

  • This is an in depth look at my process for fitting simple guards or bolsters on hidden tang blades.
My goal is a high level of fit and finish in a practical setting. By that I mean I need to complete the project in a reasonable amount of time, with accessible tools.
Like most of you, I don't have a milling machine in my shop, so the fitting process must be possible with basic tools. The most expensive tools I use are a belt grinder and drill press, something that can be obtained fairly inexpensively, but a hand drill can be used if care is taken.
DISCLAIMER: Using equipment and tools and building knives can be dangerous. Proceed with caution, at your own risk.

You can get an XY axis vise fairly cheaply . Harbor freight has one. But you need to do a bit of refining to get it to run tightly

Another trick for filing the guard is to clamp it in your file guide. That way you know you're square and flat.

I know that these long form informational videos don't make us a bunch of that Viral Video money. But, it's nice to see other guys on here doing them. Great video man.

Thanks for sharing your process; this should become known as the "one-stop-shop" video for fitting guards, as you covered pretty much everything anyone making hidden tang knives needs to know on the subject. I especially appreciate your side note on choosing the right brass, it does make a difference!
