  • Christmas Tree Safety Reminders!
    • Pick a tree with green, soft needles that don't fall off
    • Cut 2 inches off the trunk prior to standing
    • Use LED lights to reduce energy use/heat output
    • Check lights for damage or frayed wires
    • Place tree at least 3 feet away from heat sources like fireplaces, candles, heaters
    • Don't block exit pathways with tree
    • Check and water daily as needed
    • Artificial trees should follow the same guidelines, though less susceptible to combustion
From 2016-2020, US Fire Departments responded to an average of 160 house fires per year, resulting from Christmas trees as the ignition. While a very small part of the larger fire data, it's notable due to the speed at which it happens. Please take the necessary precautions to prevent this from happening in your home.
    Poem read along:
T’was the night before Christmas, and all through the house
This firefighter finally got decorating, at the behest of his spouse.
The stockings were hung, of the Information Outreach Division,
In hopes that their message would be well accepted.
The photos and knick knacks, gently hung on the wall,
The memories of times back, of friendships in the fall.
This house could be any, of yours or of mine,
Of Grandma Bisketi and her relics and shrines.
So please listen carefully, we’ve safety tips to share,
Ways to be safe and avoid a fire affair.
So out comes the tree, full of beauty and grand,
With needed décor and some lights, as to not be bland.
Is the tree artificial, been vetted, fire resistant?
Or is it a real one, then cut off 2 inches, it will really assist it.
Did he place that grand tree, at least 3 feet of distance?
From candles and the fireplace, space heaters, we insist it.
Are the lights that are hung, of the LED variety?
To lower energy use and heat output, to help ease some anxiety.
And did the firefighter do what they always say?
Did he look for damaged, or broken lights, or perhaps if they’re frayed.
With everything set, the house looks amazing,
The spirit of the holidays was increasingly raising.
So he sat on his recliner, lit his candle, and read,
But was soon so exhausted, he lowered his head.
And in that brief moment of unrecollected ease,
His hand moved aside, and knocked the candle into the tree.
When next to the chair, there arose such a clatter.
The tree was on fire, he was woken thinking what was the matter?
What happened? What caused this? Should I just get out?
Or can I fight it? Extinguish it? You can’t. It’s growing all about.
In a matter of seconds, the entire room was ablaze.
The momentos. The memories. Gone with the flames.
And fortunately our firefighter, was dressed in his turnouts,
Or he could have succumbed, Without a doubt.
So the message this Christmas and holiday season,
As you prep your home and gather with reason.
Please take the steps, don’t let things get hotter,
And ask yourself daily, did I remember to water?
We wish the happiest holidays, full of happy delight
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!
