For a South African expat, this is manna from heaven. Jors, you are the most eloquent non-first language English-speaker I have probably ever heard (ok, perhaps apart from my late uncle, a van Zyl, also more or less from your part of the world as it happens - Deben). If your English is this good, I would really enjoy listening to a fireside story told by you in Afrikaans, which is even more expressive!
I have been following your Orange River flood updates for the past month or so and, to my horror, just realised I hadn't subscribed. That has now been rectified.
I am returning for a holiday in the WC in February. I don't think I have time (or adequate A/C!) to make this road trip then, but I shall certainly be exploring the Swartland and some of the W coast on similar, albeit greener, roads. I might venture up to Vredendal/Lutzville area where my mother (Lochner) is from.
Anyway, thank you for the amazing videos.
Best wishes from the Isle of Man!
I cannot agree with you more, I've said so myself. And yes I can say his Afrikaans is just as eloquent as his English. He has the type of voice and vocabulary that really interests you. I have learned more about South Africa from this fine gentleman than I have through my entire school going years.
This lonely road has unexplainable beauty! Thank you for taking up your friend's challenge!
i am glad I did , I even watched the video a couple of times myself.

It's amazing the road knowing it was lonely and you kept at it until you returned
Gees man ...gees
Yes I enjoy that road.
Jors, now u know what I and many of us truckers enjoy.... Welcome to our world.
Contrary to believe, we do enjoy these kind of roads.
John, never mind. We do watch the whole thing. It's fun
The loneliest road we took was from Windhoek through the Kalahari Desert to Lichtenburg in a VW Bug. We saw a lot of animals, and got lost. We only came across one man 47 years ago on that trip that showed us the way to go. Nobody would believe me if I explained it in this comment exactly how we did it. Cheers and Blessings 🙏.
That sounds like an epic trip.

@@JorsMalan Only sad thing is, we didn't have the fancy camera's and digital video we have today...it's all in my memories. We saw the biggest spitting cobra, and when my brother rolled down the passenger window and got a big slap from Dad to roll it up quick, then it spat at the window. It's quite the memory!! We made it across just in time.
@@tonynagy2042 thats a long time ago, we were under German rule that time
Peaceful indeed, no traffic or congestion. Just you and the road..
I agree that's its the "loneliest road" in SA.
My wife and I completed the section from Pofadder to Bitterfontein last Saturday. We only saw one vehicle besides a mini-bus in Kliprand.
That little town was such a relief even though we did not encounter another soul along the way.
I loved this - Thanks you so much - It appeals to me on many levels. Silence - Solitude - Space to Breathe
Hi, the clouds are spectacular!!!
They were fascinating to watch, and th clouds emphasized how far the horizon was.
What a beautiful drive though, perfect place to get away from all the hustle and bustle of noisy city life. Thank you as always.
I like your ending Jors..to encourage people to have a perfect conversation with themself and the highest supreme..And that's the road...Siyabonga Ndoda the Zulu Kingdom thanks you for such lens..
Thanks, like you said, introspection and discussion with your maker is important.
Man, this made me yearn for the quiet and peaceful platteland, God's big skies. Beautiful route, great dirt road, perfect weather. Thanks for sharing.
Oh! ..and great music!
Thank you so much. It makes my lonely trip from Durban to Johannesburg a pleasurable one, when I occasionally drive up to visit my sons. I like to drive rather than fly. To listen to music from my younger days and enjoy the view. I also look with longing to take a drive into some of the little towns along the way. I see the remote farmhouses with long dusty roads leading up to them and wonder if approaching them with be a "health hazard". I enjoyed your chicken joke.
what an incredibly moving and soothing experience I watched it from start to finish. not sure if I could watch the unabridged version, I would rather drive it. Thanks Jors for a wonderful insight into your world.
It is absolutely worth the drive, and when you do plan to have enough time for a couple of coffee breaks
Thanks. What a fascinating drive. I do appreciate to know the type of the vehicle make and model you were driving.
I do love to drive this route.
Thanks for sharing the experience.

Much appreciated... being alone and in solitude definitely has a profound effect on one, in a good way.
This reminds me of the drives I used to take. You really get to soak up the beauty of our country. I did a lot of drives in the Eastern cape.
We had family living in Kliprand years ago. It was a lovely little town in those days.
They used to show a movie there by the garage every now and then.
I still have family just about 15km to the Bitterfontein side of kliprand. I love that area and the people living there.
Thanks for the video.
I enjoy driving through Kliprand.
Lekker. That area is so peaceful..
Thanks Jors
Thanks for showing us Jors . What amazing skies! It seemed very flat with just the distant kopies breaking the horizon. Probably why it felt so relaxing!
The clouds made a big difference in how it felt as well. Yes very relaxing.
Me too, I like the peace and tranquil!
Standing there and looking to the endless horizons with no one else in sight is absolutely peaceful.
learnt never anything in half measures....migrated to full length thank you Jors
Excellent 😁 I hope you found it relaxing.
Baai Dankie Jors ....For the past thirty six years I have been providing an electronics repair service, based in Durban. Originally form Zimbabwe, immigrated to South Africa 1979.
I have traveled many kilometers by road in South Africa . I can appreciate this video ... been there and seen it . I have been very fortunate to travel to China, Thailand, Korea, Germany, Brazil, India, Russia.
Here is the thing ... I have taken short videos and photos .... but its not the same as actual experience... not being able share with a family member or friend at the time.
When I do talk about the experiences I have had ... wish the listeners could see in my head so I could share what I have seen
Ek het hierdie baie baie geniet - dankie, sien jou so gou moontlik, moontlik.
Enjoyed this very much, thank you. Huge Itchy Boots fan (anybody here know of the Dutch girl travelling the planet on her motorbike?)
Yes she did pass through close to here before she went into Namibia, andthen I did a video on the Canyon Roadhouse just a day after she did it, missed her with a day or less there.
Ai jors love you been there since the flooding of the orange River n namibier that s hart you made happy. Jou yster
Makes me want to leave JHB asap... Love it 🇿🇦🇿🇦
Thank you. Without your video, we would never know what a peaceful and mystically lovely journey awaits those who need a rest.
I hit the like button the moment oom Jors said that he would rather live in Kliprand than any other city. I share the same view!
A few years ago me and my wife lost both our dads in a span of 8 days and after her dad's funeral we got into the car and drove to the northern cape, we went through there and I can agree with you that the lonely road clears your head and gives you new hope. We only saw 1 car, and a guy on a bicycle, the roads are very good and some of them have a 100 km/h speed limit which you can easily reach and still be safe even with a normal sedan Great video!!!
What a great video well done
Thanks.
Fantastic. i love it. Thanks for shooting the video and sharing
It is a pleasure, I am glad you enjoyed it.
We have a road trip to the Cape from JHB soon and i have been checking out tis and tricks. Your video reccomemended and i enjoyed it. I would definately want to live in such a small town instead of here in the city. I loved this video and it was random. Thank you
Nic Louw
Fantastic idea ... I've been playing to ride that road for a while , only difference I plan to do it by motorcycle.
Thanks, that was gorgeous. The perfect perspective of the straight flat road is mesmerising. Like driving into the arms of God.
No man Jors you are the best travel commentator I have ever heard. Thanks Bru for the great journey, hahaha I love the South African Accent.
I used to drive alone from Durban to Disaneng just outside Mahikeng. It's so nice to talk to oneself while driving.
@@segokgooxfordseabelomodise3006 it gives time for good reflexion.
Great ride. I am going to do it in my 1990 Syncro.
Go for it!
Very interesting, enjoyed it very much, thanks. Better to travel in pairs at least when on such a road. In Namibia I travelled regularly from Walvis Bay through the Namib Naukluft to Windhoek, only one "town", Solitaire. If you stop anywhere, you can hear the blood rushing past your eardrums, so quiet.... Heaven on earth
Namibia has even better roads than what we have.
Jors, once again you have enlightened us with your beautiful video. God's Country. Thank you so very much. Until your next venture. Stay safe.
Great video, loved the Karoo landscapes and the narrating is great.
I drove the dirt road between Kakamas and Loeriesfontein (about 280 kms) about 8 years ago, and it was a similar experience.
Drove the R355 and R358 in April 2021 whilst doing a solo drive around SA, and agree that these are lonely roads, wonderful roads to drive with breathtaking scenery, will definitely drive them again.
Thanks, Jors. That’s exactly what I need, a bit of solitude and time away from all this madness. Would like to make the trip sometime. Thank you.
It's a pleasure 😀, it is very gratifying to know that there are others out there that enjoy what I enjoy.
This is bucket list stuff Jors...those little towns can benefit from the mall crawlers trying to experience a bit of real gravel road. In fact it will make a decent practice run trip for Namibia. Couple of mates out for a remote off-road weekend fun hopefully with campsites along the way...
There are even more roads like this in the are that you can add to a practice run like that and make a circle route.
Thanx for sharing. Iv never been there, but putting it on my bucket list. For sure.
There is a lot more in the area to see than what people think, for sure bucket list worthy.
That was great Jors. We enjoy all of your videos and this one captured driving on South African byways for us. Thanks.
Hi Jors
Back in the 1980's I was a country smous, there are some very lonely roads in South Africa.
My favourite runs, Matjiefontein, Sutherland, Fraserburg, Loxton, Victoria West, Vosburg, Carnarvon, Willisron, Middelpos, Calvinia, Nieuwoudtville and then home .
I would also add the road from Victoria Wes through Murraysburg to Graaf Reinette to that list.
Bbb baie mooi Jors.
Dankie
Thanks for sharing. I grew up with endless horizons. Love lonely long road trips
Thank you Jors for making this video. We used to farm in the Karas mountains but never went through the Kalahari. I found this extremely interesting. The road seems to be in quite a good condition. Amazing. I really enjoyed this.
The condition was good in the sense that it had little to no corrugated. There were some damaged from the heavy rains we had.
The road seems to be in good condition & the sky & clouds would be good for me thank you ❤❤❤ a lovely slow road for me! I have to tell you that since I have been in Lorraine, Port Elizabeth we have had wonderful rains, June 35mm, July 46mm & to date 116mm so I am a very happy new resident!
I saw the rains, also some in the catchment areas.
@@JorsMalan yes I heard, we actually had 70mm in Lorraine area on Saturday & more expected this weekend ❤️❤️❤️ My tanks are all full 😁 stay well
A Toyota it would have to be. Great videos many thanks
A Toyota and 2 spare tires. Also pack some water. 😀
Loved travelling these roads with my geologist husband. 'Lonely' is a rather solemn description for the wide open spaces that some of us prefer. We know why...
Beautiful Africa ! Really enjoyed this! I've driven from Kimberly to near Groblershoop .. barely saw another car and the sunset was the cherry on the top!!!
Jors, what a wonderful video hilighting the desolation and vast expanse of our beautiful country. Stunning footage complimented wit an excellent albeit dry commentry. I did laugh out loud a couple of times. Keep up the excellent work and all the vey best from Johannesburg, RSA!!
I love road tripping too Jors and always try and take the road less travelled. And being a farm girl from the NC, I love this kind of scenery! I still question my decision to move to the Garden Route instead of the Karoo....
Regtig mooi Jors. Baie dankie hiervoor.
Good God such a journey. Hellish lonely for certain. Very testing drive. Thank you for posting. God Bless
Awesome video, loved the scenery , did not know there was still lonely roads in South Africa, this was an awesome educational video, thank you for sharing.

Apart from going through a few towns, I encountered one car between kakamas and Sutherland. Beautiful 6 hour journey.. Thank you. Beautiful video
Thanks for sharing enjoyed the video and your insights, I love the open road even though I am a city slicker, Capetonian!
Lekker video boet...love it..will love to take such a drive i love nature , quietness and wildness
You should!
I will thanks we need more of it 😂😂👌🏾
Awesome video - you live in a truly beautiful place. And I could listen to you narrate the whole day. I really hope one day to visit this part of the country and make that trip!
I would love to drive this road
Looks peaceful.Thanks for the upload
Glad you enjoyed it.
Awesome!!!Thank you,I really enjoyed the commentary and the experience.Might even want to do myself.
It is definitely worth doing, especially if you add some of the roads along the west coast in the trip.
Lekker watching this after welding all day and evening..had a few dops but my old 2.5 ranger and I would enjoy that road! Enjoy your channel. Lekker man
After a hard day I even watched the video again myself for probably the 5th time after finishing it, a good way to relax.
Absolutely awesome.. road is also my middle name so I can appreciate it.
You have to drive it then.
I've made it to the end of the video with some laughs in between. When I was a field technician about 12 years ago, I used to drive between Musina and Vivo in Limpopo, about a stretch of 120km of total emptiness especially after passing Venetia mine. Nowadays it's a truckers alternative route to avoid tollgates and weighbridges on the N1
I think populations in rural areas have been shrinking, but that might turn around again in future. Some of these roads used to be also used by trucks like that.
Absolutely wonderful. You capture the essence in both images and your narrating. Sometimes, the 'loneliest road' is a busy city avenue, full of people who don't know each other. Thanks!
Well said! I have never felt more lonely than when I am in a city.
And olso we would like to hear about the engin of the car and olso the nature sound
Yes, I would love to drive this road as well. Thanks for sharing
What an awesome road to be one,the peacefulness, scenery and no music to spoil the road trip, this is awesome ,thanks for making this video👌
Glad you enjoyed it. Lots of people don't get why I drive without music.
Loved this video made me home sick 😔 😞 😢
Goodness sure is a lonely rd I don't like lonely rds but I'm watching cause I like scenery it's too much and the music makes it more lonely😥💞🙋🐋🐳Lamberts bay🦐
The loneliest road I have driven was from Keetmanshoop to Mariental on the unpaved M29. 280km. There had been some unseasonable rain, so I travelled with enough food and water in case I got stuck in the occasional area where water had saturated some parts of the rd. It was a (rental) Nissan NP300 I think, 4x4. I saw 3 cars along the 4hr route. It was one of the best and most memorable drives I have ever done.
Great video Jors, it looks like a great experience. I have just added it to my bucket list.
Wow that was amazing. Didn't know that the Nuclear waste plant was there in that area. Is that area farm land or mining very beautiful land. Thanks for sharing Jorst.
Mostly sheep farming and mining in the area.
I was not born there, but I did most of my schooling and my apprenticeship I Kimberley, and I agree that the wide open countryside of the Northern Cape has a unique beauty. You were fortunate with the weather. 700km in 20 minutes is good going! Thanks, but I'll
... pass on the real-time version 😉
Jip, the full lenght is more for the "Die hard's". it is interetin g to see that a lot of people actually go and watch it.
👏👏
Thanks for sharing. Soothing video, enjoyed the journey and the music. Brought back memories of our travels in the Cape.
Goodness, I think you're right. Didn't know there was a road like this in our country. And it's long!
I love to do it with my mountain bike. Bikepacking.
Well, you wont struggle too much with uphills, the main thing will be to carry enough water. I find the gravel roads often ride better than tar with the right bike.
Thanks for sharing
Thanks Jors for posting this journey. The experience seems to be heaven on earth, but with my wife, surely hell on earth
You have to at least give it a try, you wont know until you try it. Who knows, she might surprise you.
Brilliant, thank you. When you turn give us GPS points sothat can follow. Also naming towns at these junctions.
Noted. It was a bit of a sputr of the moment thing with not much planning as to how a video would look.
Awesome video! I totally agree, this is the life! Looking forward to watching the full length video of this journey.
Thanks for sharing this lekker experience. Looking forward to more of them!
I just subscribed.
Holy crap! This is lonelier than a rational thought in Malema's head!!!
I honestly enjoyed this video... wish I could experience it myself one day...inspiring
Glad you enjoyed it. It certainly is worth doing.
Dankie Meneer. I’ll be there!❤
Baie Goed. Very very good. I would agree with you. I would much rather stay and drive that road than any city in the world. I would love to take the drive myself
Plan it and do it.
I drove from Springbok to Kleinzee, o my soul!
A chicken runs into the road what do you do?
If you swerve to miss the chicken you might miss the town, but if you hit the chicken the town will be covered in feathers! 🤣😂
Now i understand why the afrikaner fights for South Africa. The black south africans fight for scraps in Soweto, while there is such a beautiful country to explore
I agree, South Africa is worth fighting for, the problem is sometimes we don't realize who we have to fight. RUclips gives me a lot of statistics about my viewers, no personal information, but for example I can see how many views from Android phones vs Apple or how many views a video get from any particular city, now the interesting thing is that this video got more views from Soweto than it got from Bloemfontein and George combined. And more comments from Soweto even.
Dankie oom geniet altyd oom se videos Mooiloop
Dankie oom, that was fantastic
Dit was n plesier, letterlik
