My aunt lived a few blocks from where they filming Vertigo on Delores St. here in San Francisco. She called over to our house and invited us kids to come over and watch them working. It was kinda cool to see Jimmy Stewart. I was really surprised at how tall he was
@@donalekocorleone6844 how would you know the age of a person by their writing? i certainly wouldn't. They did the Mission Dolores scenes in Oct of 1957 when I was 10 years old. I didn't have a clue who Alfred Hitchcock was but did know Jimmy Stewart thru his western/cowboy movies.

I would love to have all those Pics (and some more) in a Book. Can't imagine Grace Kelly instead of Kim Novak in Vertigo. Kim is absolutely perfect in this Role.
I re-watched Vertigo yesterday. For the 4th time I believe. I had forgotten just how good Kim Novak was, although I didn't realise she was about 25 years old. She looked more mature, or at least acted more mature. Important since she was supposed to be playing a character carrying the weight of the past and able to express that when Scotty pushes her to an explanation.
Great montage of behind the scenes photos of this classic motion picture, no doubt Hitchcock's triumph. Also enjoyable is the mesmerizing Bernard Hermann score which almost but not quite overtakes the story of the film.
the best female and male acting performance of all-time, the best direction of all-time, the best music score of all-time,the best designed movie clothes of all-time... All in all the best movie of all time
Kim Novack was absolutely perfect in the Madeleine/ Judy role sadly Hitchcock didn’t think so.. and the bad reviews of that time did not help.. best Hitchcock movie in my opinion
Kim was Hitch's third Choice. No.1 was Grace Kelly, No.2 was Vera Miles Kim didn't know this. But i agree, i can't imagine this Film with another Leading Lady.
Hitchcock wanted Vera Miles, which would have made it an entirely different experience. Kim Novak, no one else could have brought to the role what she did.
@@kallegrabowski8972 Vera Miles didn't have that ethereal beauty. Grace Kelly was beautiful but rather boring to look at. Her Oscar for The Country Girl was one of the biggest upsets in the award's history. She simply wasn't that good an actress.
Jimmy Stewart had such "Everyman" characteristics that men, generally speaking, could relate directly to him. His military bearing and service in WW2 furthered this image.
Brilliant movie. So representative of Hitchcocks talent. Perfect casting. Perfect score providing just the right effect at the right time. There never was before and never will be again a film genius like Hitch. I grew up watching his movies and have never tired of seeing them over again even today. Vertigo is one of my favorites along with Shadow of a Doubt and North by Northwest.
loved these photos for me it's always been a toss up between North By Northwest and Vertigo as my favorite movie @ about age 14/15 I fell in love with Kim and @ 76 still am.
@Corno di Bassetto I wouldn't change a single element of the plot. It's a masterpiece. I can imagine someone walking into a theater expecting a simple thriller/mystery and coming out of Vertigo disappointed. Most people who love the film appreciate it as an exploration of obsession. It's not as easy to understand as Dial M for Murder or The Man Who Knew Too Much. It's my favorite movie, but I'm not sure I fully appreciated it until I watched it on repeat viewings. (Nice username and avatar, btw!)
There was no collaboration of film composer and director in the history of Hollywood who had the power and prestige of Alfred Hitchcock and Bernard Hermann. At their zenith in the 1950's early 60's. The world waited to see what those masters were going to come up with next. It was marvelous. Vertigo, North By Northwest, Psycho, The Birds all in succession? unbelievable, in a 1,000 years film students will be looking back at their work and marvel, as they do today
@Corno di Bassetto Thanks for the referral ( Trouble with Harry), not sure I'd put that in a league with Vertigo or Psycho, but it has it's moments I guess. Never understood what people saw in Britten much prefer Elgar or Walton in the Brits contribution to music. Hard to believe that Elgar was 'self taught' when you consider the number of musicians that is in an orchestra. Bout the only thing I was self taught in was boiling my water in the morning for my tea, as to an orchestra? forget it
Hold on to your hats. Robert Downey, Jr. is planning a remake of Hitchcock's classic with him in the Stewart role. No names yet for Novak's role. The star of this film though was San Francisco - Before Tony Bennett lost his heart, before Scott McKensie invited the world to visit with flowers in their hair, before the Summer Of Love, before the 49ers won the Super Bowl, before Harry got dirty, before the Giants won the World Series. It was seeing the city for that moment in time that would bring me here decades later and fall head over heels in love with the City!
Go back and read some of the blah and negative reviews by MAJOR reviewers when Vertigo came out. It will leave you with your mouth hanging open. By the way, the music is utterly delicious.
These photographs - many copies of original photographs and printed images from magazines - are new to people who remember this timeless film. Then as now, stills are made on location and stages where Actors relax and play for the camera. The images of Novak along with Bel Geddes and Stewart are a lovely record. However the stand out images for me are the profile shot of Stewart not wearing his toupee, and the group shot where Stewart wears a black velvet collar around his shoulders, in preparation for the FX head shot for this movie's dream sequence.
Vera Miles was the actress who was originally planned to star in Vertigo and they as far as having costume tests for her as that photo shows. She had to pull out when she became pregnant.
@@johnp515 Right. But I've never heard of a BTS photo of a released film featuring an actor who withdrew long before principal photography began being included in a video of this kind. If he/she didn't see fit to include at least an explanation, they should never have chosen to include it at all. That said, I think it's far more likely the person who produced this video hadn't noticed it wasn't Kim. Anyway, I'm glad Vera withdrew. I honestly don't think she'd be convincing in the role. In fact, I don't understand what Hitch saw in her. She's much too cold an actor, who simply does not possess the type of unmistakable passion smuldering just beneath the character's aloof veneer that Kim brought to the role.
