I'm a huge fan of all of these historical drama coming out that is not just The Tudors again and again.
I know what you mean. I'm completely Tudored out.
I really want someone to make a more accurate show about Suleiman The Magnificent and Hurrem Sultan. I enjoy the Magnificent Century but it's not very accurate and majorly down plays how much of an impact Hurrem had on Suleiman the Emperor and history.
Im a huge fan of any historical dramas that are actually historical and not trying to pretend that every third person in Europe was an African in the Victorian era
@@tyronedindu2094 exactly! Europeans look a certain way, and if you are going to tell that history, do it accurately!
@@CrimsonAngelWinges that would be really interesting!
Just binge watched this show. The costumes, scenery and the actors are fantastic. I hope Netflix does another season, will be a big shame if they don't. In 1 day if flew to #2 with no advertising. So come on Netflix.
This is even better than the crown in my opinion
I’m having a hard time finding a series like this again. I want a series like this romance that you will really love the couple… pleaseee recommend something
Did you watch it in German because I can’t find an English dub anywhere
@@SK-hf4je No I watched in English on Netflix.
The crown doesn’t hold a candle
The wedding gown is absolutely stunning !!!! And the chemistry of franz and Elizabeth is stunning too
True
Yes, they really do seem so in love!
I read they dated at some point in real life
@@bridgetfhelm whaaat! 😍😍😍
They were first cousins. Talk about keeping it in the family. 🤮
Whoever designed the clothes for this show is fabulous! Such attention to detail! Specifically love the costume choice for both the leads for the meet cute scene! Eagerly waiting for Season 2 - as long as there are English subtitles I am all set ❤ Great job folks 🙌🏻 I hope season 2 comes out sooner
Fun fact, the woman who tailored my wedding dress worked on this show. I got her to shorten some pants for me in June and she mentioned it. She's French but lives in Berlin. I don't think she's the only one working on the costumes, but I'm sure she'd be happy to hear this! :)
@@ohffsreally that is awesome! I hope I cpuld meet her someday
Right! I want those shoes she gave to the little girl
Highly depends. While the dresses look great, the hairstyles are whack for the era.
i agree! beautiful costumes! especially the dress elisabeth wore at the end of last episode!

I just finished binging it! I really wish they make a season 2. I fear it won't get as popular in the states because they didn't advertise it as much and Empress Sisi is relatively unknown here.
Eu acho que eles querem se distanciar do "Sisi" porque já romantizaram muito, acho que eles irão fazer uma série um pouco mais perto da realidade, foi o que eu ouvi falar.
I know right but I’m so happy it’s number two in the states
Definitely a huge gap in the US public school system when it comes to teaching history. We essentially get the broad strokes of ancient civilizations, and US/military history, and that's it. She's one of my favorite historical figures so I'm really hoping people watch!
I honestly thought everybody knows Sissi
En France la seule qui représente Sissi c'est Romy Schneider et personne d'autre.
As a german, I have to say the english dubbing is quite well.
i was just about to comment the opposite, i mean its not terrible but its far from great
I hate dubbing unless it's for animation, hahahahah, and now I'm an English speaker living in France and pretty much everything is dubbed, lol, my god, my father-in-law was at my place recently and he can read and his eyesight isn't bad, but he insisted on watching Outlander dubbed, hahahahhahahahaahha, I couldn't watch with him I was so annoyed
I will try it in German with English subtitles. At least the dubbing here is into British accents, not American, but they are not the right class, they speak too casually and the language is just too modern and clichéd.
So much better than the English dubs of most other live-action German films I’ve seen, the voice acting in those is usually either exaggerated or lifeless and just used American accents. I didn’t even realise this was dubbed until I heard you say it. That’s how good it is!
@@tommoncrieff1154 True, I think period-accurate dialogue would be better too.
Can't wait for season 2!! Ive watched it twice already. The show was so great! Love everything about this show especially the chemistry between Franz and Elizabeth. Hope they give us ss2 soon.
I hope they have a version with subtitles not dubbed! This drama looks amazing
They should. They had a teaser trailer in German like a month ago.
It's a big production Netflix show, They offer everything when it comes to language. I bet you I will be able top watch it dubbed in Korean with the subtitles in Portuguese.
Oh the original language not in english? I was like why they have british accent lol
@@firstofall21 Because Americans like British Accents more then British people like their own Accents. It's that simple.
@@balljointfd3s When you're dealing with monarchies and nobility and palaces, why would spoken English be American? It's like two clashing aesthetics.
This series is one of the best things Netflix has ever done. Just absolutel perfection on every level. The writing , directing , acting ( magnificent) sets , customs are extraordinary
Love this show so much! I watched this with original German audio and it was perfect.. Plot, characters, costumes. Chemistry between Elizabeth and Franz is unbelievable, actress playing Sophia is also great. I really hope for season 2..
People asking why is it dubbed: Because it allows for more accessibility for more viewers. Some people are sight-impaired and can only hear; if they include audio description with this it will be very helpful. There are also those who have a hard time with subtitles due to other disabilities or eye-sigh issues. Something to consider. Especially when Netflix usually offers their shows in both languages with subtitles. so you'll likely be just fine.
I wish more foreign show would get good dubs I'm a big fan of The Magnificent Century and Ekaterina but there subs only and sometimes you just want to play your historical drama in the background while your reading or cleaning.
@@CrimsonAngelWinges But therein lies the problem. I would love a dubbed version of Isabel, or even for the last two seasons and The Split Crown to be subbed, but they only subbed the first two seasons and I struggle!
They did a great job with dubbing. Usually ruins a movie for me but this is so smoothly done
When Sissi died...people say the Emperor said "Only God knows how much I loved that woman" 😭
And a rather famous quote "Life has spared me of nothing."
And yet he was unable to protect her from his mother
Yes. He did not. But she was not a better mother either. The only time she cared for her son was when he was a child and badly treated by his teacher Count Gondrecourt. She managed to get him away but otherwise? She didn't care for her children (expect the youngest Marie Valerie). She called her daughter in law a "Trampeltier" (clumsy oaf) and I mean... Crown Prince Rudolf later killed himself in Mayerling.
Well , because she didn't get to form an attachment with her children because of her MIL and her children were also not attached to her. Mutual.
@@Wontonsouplyfe
People should stop with the evil-mother narrative.
Please please a 2nd season!!! Don’t abandon this series it litterly is one of the best things to watch on Netflix , I can’t stop watching it over and over just waiting for season 2
OMG I'm so excited for this. I read a book about her and it made me sad bc in the early parts she and Franz Joseph really did seem like they were happy together and then his mother and everyone meddled and messed it all up.
Thanks for the spoilers. May you burn in hell, you foul demon.
Why is it always the mothers who meddle in romantic relationships and mess it up....
Was it the book that was written in the form of her diary?
@@mahamzahid7846 I looked it up, it's The Reluctant Empress by Brigitte Hamann. IIRC I bought it at the gift shop at Schonbrunn.

OK this show was so well done. Definitely the best brittish english dubbing I have ever watched for sure. Loved this 6 episode series and there better be a season 2.
I totally agree. I usually don’t listen to any dubbing prefer subtitles which sometimes can get overwhelming . But this dubbing tries to capture the essence of the scene and emotion which good enough for me. 😊

Big shoes to fill because the original 3 movie series of Sissi with Romy Schneider was one of the best and most beautiful things put to film. This had better be good....
that was exactly my thought when i first learned about this. I hope it doesn't disappoint!!!
You cannot even compare. Especially Romy Schneider. She owns that character for ever. This series is an insult. Its not enjoyable if you actually know the real history.
Amazing story. I lived in German 4 years so I knew some German. The designer went above and beyond with the Empress clothing so beautiful.
just finishing watching. really a great work and i’m especially impressed by the last scene where the empress went into fire dark which just mirrors the uncertain future for the empire. all of them were in tensions. also being deeply attracted by Netflix’s visual language again (after the crown). can’t to wait the next season😢
The show is amazing, words cannot describe. It is the best I have seen and is so different. Please give us Season 2!!!!!
I remember the movies with Romi Schneider. And, there was also a cartoon show when I was young. I genuinely cannot wait for this. My mom was such a fan of the trilogy movie that her weddjng dress was inspired by Sissi's wedding dress. So, yeah, I cannot wait.
I remember the cartoons!!! I was always watching it !! 💜
I absolutely loved this show! From the costumes, the lighting, to the character choices, etc!
Emmy winner!! Definitely have to watch now
As someone who is quite familiar with the original Sissi movies (and the actual history of Queen Elisabeth) with Romy Schneider I`m quite curious how it`s going to compare. The trailer looks great!
Same here. May be its bit more based on facts than the Sissi trilogy. Though Romy Schneider was a perfect Sissi.
hoping they remember that she seldom smiled in public showing her teeth because of her shyness and embarrassment surrounding her teeth (dentistry being what it was back then)
idk, I have questions already about her characterisation. From what I understand Sissi was a shy, quiet and very beautiful woman. This Sissi is shown throwing things at people, forcing guards to open gates. The scene where her mother in law says that if she won't bend she'll have to break kind of confirms what I suspect. Sissi was young, coupled with the quiet personality, there was no need for breaking when Sissi was easily made to bend to her mother-in-laws will. Not even her husband did anything. She was a great woman who was strong and made vital contributions for her country, but I didn't get the image that she was so fiery like is portrayed here. She had more of a quiet strength. Or am I wrong?
it's terrible, such a disappointment
I watch the entire series in one day,This is addiction
6 episodes ain't enough. This series is amazing.

Like wtf Netflix, do you really think that sissi kissed Franz the night before the engament??? You were supposed to show how tormented she was learning that she was picked to become empress, SHE HAD NO CHOICE! instead, the show deliberetly makes her look like she wanted this!
So stupid! I'm not blaming the actors but the one that also came up with the script did such a bad job! Like the main couple on their first encounter weren't supposed to know each other. That's why Sissi liked franz in the first place, because she taugh he was a stable boy or whatever!
I just finished watching the whole season in 3 days not kidding, hooked on these eps. They’re lil naughty but I love the fashion of these characters
Please please please bring a second season 🙏 I thoroughly enjoyed this~ lovedd the wardrobe and everything

Hello from Serbia 🇷🇸💜...
Sisi, the story is real, serious, beautiful and, for all Europe, important: History that deserves to be remembered.
I’ve watched the first three episodes and this show is fantastic!! Love it!!!
I'm very curious about this series and if they will take the "fairy tale" version of the movies or if they stay closer to the historical facts. Hopefully, it's going to be the latter - even if I suspect that a lot of people would like her character less in this regard. I used to be obsessed with the empress Elisabeth when I was a teenager and I learned everything about her that I could find. I hope, the romance is not to exaggerated, because from Elisabeth's side, it definitely wasn't as strong as from Franz-Joseph's perspective. Sure, she fell in love with him in the beginning or at least had a strong crush (after all, he was the emperor and he was good looking and showed a lot of interest in her - any fifteen year sold girl would be affected by that), but later on, she preferred to spend her life farther away from him. Also, she didn't like to sleep with him. For her, it was just a chore that she had to do out of duty. She even picked a mistress for him, so that he could satisfy his needs without her having to take part in that. Therefore, some historians think, that she might have been asexual. Others suspect that she might have been lesbian, because she collected pictures of beautiful women from all over the world. But since there is no proof for either of these claims no one knows for certain.
Also, she wasn't the perfect and self-sacrificing mother the movies portray her as. She actually didn't really care about her children (except for her last daughter, who got all her love and care that the older siblings had to miss out on). Yes, she fought to have a say about the education of her son Rudolf (which probably saved his life, since his original teacher was to harsh and brutal for his weak constitution and made him ill), but she linked those demands to her own freedom and after she won and installed his new teachers, she abandoned him and traveled the world instead.
Furthermore, she had an eating disorder. She was obsessed with her own beauty and had a strict diet and exercised obsessively. In a time, when the beauty standard was still seen as having a corpulent body (as to show off the fact, that you had enough money to buy a lot of expensive food), she was the first who started to steer it into the other direction. Due to her slim waist she was called "the fairy empress" by the people and she wanted to be remembered as young and beautiful. Therefore she never allowed for pictures to be taken of her or painted after she reached her thirties. No one should ever see her old.
It's not exactly true that she didn't care for her children. Her mother-in-law, the Archduchess Sophie, after Sisi's first child, a daughter, died in infancy, literally took each of her children from her to raise herself, saying that Sisi being an awful mother was the cause of her daughter's death, and rarely allowed her anywhere near them. Franz-Joseph did nothing to stop her. In truth, Sophie hated Sisi, and this was just another way of her abusing the "wrong" choice her son made. Her youngest daughter was born *after* Archduchess Sophie died, and so was the only child she actually got to raise. Sisi had severe mental health issues, succumbing for long periods to depression, and possibly to OCD and anorexia, though no one knows for sure. The poor woman had an absolutely miserable life. Hungary was the only place she felt free, so she lived there apart from Franz-Joseph most of the time, returning to Vienna only when she absolutely had to. She was an intelligent, free-spirited woman who had never wanted to be Empress, in a time when women were expected to be ornaments and bear children, with no wills of their own, no say over her own fate. As for Rudolf, she made sure that he followed her father's progressive path, hoping to have the rest of the empire enjoy the sort of rule she shepherded in Hungary, and she never recovered from his suicide. How tragic that her fate should foreshadow the fate of the entire empire.
@@larkmacgregor3143 Yes, I agree that she had mental health issues. Originally I had written another paragraph about how she suffered from depression and wrote poems about death and taking her own life (she was also very affected by the suicide of her cousin Ludwig XIV), but then it got longer and longer and I decided against it. She could have had a form of anorexia, but it could have been some form of bulimia as well, since she also had moments where she ate very much (though they were very few). She didn't vomit after eating, but the excessive exercise she did daily can also be a symptom for that, since this also is a way of getting rid of the calories again.
Concerning taking the children from her, I had heard contradicting opinions and versions. Some say that they were taken from her against her will by Sophie, but others say that, since it was a common practice back then, that the queen or empress didn't deal with her own children and the "grandmother" and other people took the job, Elisabeth wasn't bothered by it that much.
Yes, Elisabeth was very intelligent and free-spirited. In many ways, her mindset and way of thinking had been far more modern than the ones of the court. I really love, how many facets there are to her. She is not the perfect heroine of this love story, as it is presented very often.
In the end, I can imagine, that even if she would have been disappointed at first (and might have suffered some heard break), she might have had a much happier life, if Franz-Joseph had followed his mothers wishes and married Elisabeth's sister.
The notion that 19th c europeans beauty standards were more into bigger bodies is a 20th c invention. It's more broadly true that prior to ~aboutish~ the turn to the 20th c, fashion tended to focus more on acquiring (via structured garments) the correct curve, rather than sheer size. But that varies significantly? Among modern era Europeans, the first popular diet I know of that was *explicitly* for weight loss was in 18th c England, and there are earlier ones couched in more complex ideology (like today's "wellness" language). The earliest cases I know of European women (of the modern era) being praised for their thinness-as-beautiful was in 15th c Italy, though having that extant may have more to do with the advent of proto celebrity culture than with that being actually the earliest occurrence.
(Also, this isn't really a refutation, but myb a sympathetic reframing. In the modern era, research into eating disorders suggest they often have less to do with vanity and are much more about ppl's attempt to assert control when they feel helpless in their lives. Kinda seems like she was in a shitty/abusive situation? Which also makes sense with the various other symptoms of anxiety & perhaps-ocd-or-similar? Which would be cool to see on screen if they can avoid either romanticizing or villainizing.)
Honestly I don’t understand why so many tv shows and films are made about her.( there’s another Sisi tv show came out in 2021) and a film will come out in 2023! But honestly her life is sad if you think of it…. Except for the young love part she had with Franz. But then it all turns sad😭 there must be another royal woman for the media to focus on in films we haven’t heard much aboit
@@clisaa6974 -I know, right! What is the big deal about her? What is so extraordinary that deserves all these series and movies?

This is a great show, I absolutely loved it! I particularly liked that they didn't turn Sophie in a cruel witch that insulted Elisabeth with everything she did or said. Wait...is this the story of Sissi, Empress and queen of Austria-Hungary? Or am I tripping? I loved the Romy Schneider version but it was rather cute instead of serious...Sissi lived a very sad and trapped life despite her fun loving and free nature.
Also, "when a thing doesn't bend...it must break"? That quote is from The Crown season 4
In fact that's an old saying.
There are similar versions of that saying in many parts of the world.
Where I live it goes "Which one is stronger, the rush that bends or the tree that breaks?"
They can just never help themselves with the "the corset is too tight" scene XD
She really did tie herself tight. She was crazy.

Such a great show!😍 I binge watched it till 5 a.m and I need season 2 asap!
As an austrian, on one side i am pleased to see our pride being brought to big screens, on another i do not see any particularly beautiful woman here?? Sisi had looong curly brown hair she was very proud of and she was obsessed with her own beauty. She had a mad diet and would beat the hands of the maid, if her one hair will fall when she was being brushed. She was also acknowledged as one of the most beautiful women of her time while here is someone average... Pity, they did not find a better fit actress. True, she was quite a snowflake who did not even participate in children's upbringing and the Mother-Empress was very critical of her. But i see they made her a rebel here... I do not think that's the right image, but lets see the series....
