Personally, it re-awakened my lost suppressed ptsd from having the misfortune of playing it. But in a way it's fitting. Both DS2 and DBD are horrendously designed. So using the music of the former makes sense in the latter.

Not every Iridescent addon needs to bullshit op like iridescent head. I understand some of them are a bit underwhelming but i'd much rather they be useless than extremely overpowered.
I can confirm most of what I've seen already. I have plenty of Oni gameplay that demonstrates most of the top tier things every Oni player needs to know, especially WASD strafing.
Watching this I'm really regretting not working on getting Plague's teachables until now. Oni with and without Infectious Fright seems like a night and day comparison. Seems like his power is just flat out worse as a power without it.
This is pretty late but oni without infectious is decent you just have to think of where they are beforehand to decide where to go. I'm a oni main without infectious and I've been doing well. Ig you only learn with time

I don't know if someone in the comments has mentioned this already but an Interesting fact about Oni's power is that while in Blood fury mode, injured survivors stop creating blood orbs. A small detail to know so Oni players can manage their power usage wisely.
Great vid, just picked him up last night and only have enough BP to hit level 10. Managed to snag BBQ early so I have something to find survivors in the meantime. I felt like I was just playing him completely wrong then Tony linked me your guide. I didn't realize that holding forward during dash makes you a lot slower so that'll change quickly. I normally use ruin and sloppy butcher to slug people. So, survivors either lose gen progress or leave a lot of blood orbs. Also, tinkerer is really powerful on oni, when tinkerer is up, you can get really close to the survivor doing the gen before he realizes you're actually super close because of blood fury movement speed and 0 terror radius.
A useful heuristic for modern oni games for the first chase is Does the first hit survivor have a med kit, if so commit, if not break off and disrupt to get a hit elsewhere as two fresh hits is 80% of power whilst two survivors are leaking all over the map for you
@@July-pg5bq i have 750 hours only on nurse. Don't touch my girl she's perfect even with no addons. You just have to be even more skilled than before. Against swf with 2500 hours each I tend to 0k with 6/7 hooks ( cuz I play fair so I don't secure my kills) with no addons. So the addons are only needed to face the best swf groups otherwise you're still gonna win 90% of the games.

Out of the ultra rare’s, Rejiro’s glove is actually really good. Since survivor’s can easily walk into these orbs by mere accident or forced to touch one when they’re moving trying to hide from you, also the fact it makes it so it’s near impossible to heal or repair generators without being seen. Since you’ll basically be constantly touching blood orbs. It’s basically a super buffed Nurse’s Calling. Except you’ll be able to detect them when they’re doing any action that involves not moving. However, due to the fact it uses up precious orbs. I find it a good idea to bring in another add-on meant for getting more blood orbs or having a better passive recharge so that you can compensate for the fact some of the orbs will get absorbed.
Kaiju Slayer333 if they are healing they can avoid the blood orb spawn depending how the blood orbs drop if the both drop to there left,back,right,or in front it won’t be absorbed it both orbs have to spawn opposite to each other idk
The blood orbs are ABSORBED, dramatically reducing the amount of times you can use your power. Which really sucks. Now yes passive recharge can compensate but then you can't have the faster demon dash charge rate with Top Knot, or you can't use your power as long with the add ons that extend it, or both. Now it's a viable strat sure but it's very much not as strong as just a standard build
Stormer Yeah. That’s the problem with it, it feels like more of a loadout that more of changes how you play the Oni rather then a buff. Since the Glove plus a passive regen add-on means you’ll overall be relying less on blood orbs and thus more likely be out of Blood Fury less. But instead, now you have a actual power when out of Blood Fury. So, I find it fun to play tbh.
this is obviously a very old guide but all the same, this is worth saying; I've only recently started playing dbd (last like, week or so) and i immediately took to oni, and i like to think i'm doing pretty good, but this guide is genuinely a godsend. like there's so much shit i straight up did not know even after toying with mechanics in different scenarios. so yea, this is a super good refresher on things i do know, and also a warning to break some bad habits i display in certain matches, so thank you scott!

Great guide, very informative. I'll be sure to use some of these tips when I play Oni! Now could you do a guide on how to counter Oni? When I play survivor against red rank Onis, if they happen to see me and have their power, it feels like there's absolutely nothing I can do to not go down instantly, except if I'm abusing a god window, which feels scummy to me... But if it's all I can do to not go down instantly, then of course I'm going to resort to it. Maybe there's more to it than what I'm seeing, but now that he's got his flick, I just can't seem to grasp it.
I dont have a lot of perks on my Oni, so this is my budget Oni build: Monitor and Abuse A Nurses Calling Discordance Enduring/Brutal Strength Monitor and abuse is self explanatory, its to easily catch up to unknowing survivors with demon dash because they wont hear me coming. A Nurses Calling so that they either dont heal and keep giving me orbs or risk revealing themselves just to heal Discordance i use to find grouped up survivors who are possibly collecting a lot of blood or can give me a lot of blood if i hit them when they are healthy. Enduring/Brutal Strength are simply filler perks to help me in chases I think i will keep a few of the other perks i used, especially Discordance, but i will also try to get Barbecue and Chili too

The Oni when he is in his fury mode reminds me of Demoknight. They're both powerful, cursed swordsmen that can charge very fast. By the way, this will defiantly help me play Oni, since I'm just getting back into him. Last time I played him, I had my first major breakdown on Dead by Daylight.
I bought him yesterday. Never played him before. I literally just bought him therefore I suck with him. I was at rank 1. And yet, I’ve got a merciless victory on my first game at rank 1. Can’t relate
discordance isnt a good pick on anyone because its hella inconsistent, barbecue has it built in, for certain killers tinkerer is better than barbecue and the oni is arguably one of them, but for killers like blight and hillbilly tinkerer is god tier, discordance isnt really good on anyone just because its inherently unreliable
I’m a main survivor and pretty much know how terrifying can be an Oni well played, but I also always felt he was kinda difficult to play so I never touch him when I went for a ritual or a rift challenge. And then I needed a few points for the rift and finally go for that 4 down in a match with Oni’s power and it was difficult indeed but also so much fun and sooo cool. I wanted to learn to play him and remembered Scott has a video tutorial about Oni and I’m here :)
Thank you very much mate. You just made me pick the Oni from my forbidden pool. I used to play him a couple times after purchasing and since I was very suck, I never use him again. And right after watching this video, I have 3 games which 2 of them are 4k. The fact about not holding W while dashing is a big deal but other pros don't mention it much. Other tips are also helpful I might have to watch again many times. Thanks for making such a good guide that make me eventually have fun with this character.
Ultimate Oni Counter Guide When? Extend the time before he gets his first hit as long as possible but then ? Jump in a locker in a chase if he is using his power to prevent the snowball? Is there Any more counterplay ?
Yeah if you play ultra safe he's awful. Most maps have plenty of pallet and window setups that can keep Oni at bay. Spine chill hard counters monitor and abuse too.

I run Tinkerer , Overcharge , Pop and Third Seal on oni and it works pretty well. Tinkerer let's me run into survivors with the power so they either dont notice me and get downed or run away and I can secure the gen afterwards by kicking it. And third seal is frequently underestimated so they sometimes dont even bother to find and cleanse it while I can either safely slug or disrupt their object of obsession or some other aura perks. So far it works well in purple ranks but I'm still somewhat weak in terms of flicking so far. Tend to bump a lot of the time ;). Thanks a lot for telling us about not holding w while dashing. Maybe that’s why I bump a lot when I shouldn’t.
CripledShadow yes she is a joke because she is the most overrated killer in DBD everybody says she’s still good but in reality she’s not great anymore that title goes to Spirit, Freddy and Billy
That's why i use spinechill - such an underrated perk and very useful for a lot of killers nowaday. Playing against oni - it is better to drop a pallet early rather then get hit by him. It's actually the only Killer where it really is a game changer from the beginning.
The regular demon strike lunge can be good for short loops and tight corners, I've seen Monto get some sexy hits like that and the lunge is really good. On a farm map on the hay bale loop with the pallet in the middle of it, I managed to get a survivor with the very tip of the lunge just at the end of my power as well and it won me the game. Don't underestimate the regular lunge, its very difficult to aim and maneuver though but its good. Also the Lunge is good for pressuring pallet drops and breaking the pallet or downing the survivor just like demogorgon.
Funny Fact (but I don't know if it was changed or patched) but I noticed as a survivor that if you teabag real fast you drop a bunch of blood orb, so for your Oni mains out there, survivors BMing you work in your favors
i find it hilarious how relevant this continues to be almost three years after oni's release because he's not changed at all and the perk changes didn't affect him too much. three things are certain, death, taxes and oni's iridescents being garbage
Would have been good to add some counter strategies. I think early game healing yourself when you are wounded or getting as far away as possible from your allies would be somewhat helpful in slowing down your blood absorption.
I hate when I accidently do the non-strike Oni attack, you know, the one that isn’t a one shot? I hate it because it disorients me a lot, the camera moves so much that he might as well just do a flip.
Do you think Knock Out is a good perk on him? Since he will be slugging a lot through the match it can make survivors waste even more time trying to help their slugged teammates
Hey Scott, I have a big problem with Oni that I asked about on Reddit and was directed here. For some reason a lot of the time when I go for demon strikes, my Oni will snap to a completely different direction, instantaneously, sometimes I swear to god 180 degrees. Watching this video, I see you didn't touch on that and didn't see yours do that once. Is there something i'm very badly missing here or is Oni just actually bugged right now? On another note, i've tried doing some practice swings away from survivors and it seems to work seemingly normal then even with a wide flick. Is it possibly the aim assist which I cannot disable doing this? PC btw.
Yes Oni is bugged. What you described has been in the game for a very, VERY long time now, we all fucking hate it. It seems to only happen on successful hits so while it doesn't technically ROB you of hits, having your camera forced some other direction is disorienting to say the least. It really sucks with Infectious, since Oni spends quite a long time looking down at the floor after a hit, he already has less time than most other Killers to actually look at all of the screams. When you get whipped backwards that's even less time because now you have to waste time correcting your camera too.
@@Space_Australian I actually have been robbed of some aoe hits since it doesn't seem to hit more than 1 survivor when it does that. Thanks for the info, pretty disappointing since it seems they turn a blind eye to it though.
You never mentioned any other perks that also synergize with Oni. Knockout, Deerstalker, Enduring, and Spirit Fury are also great candidates that you can switch with BBQ and PGTW. Knockout can make slugging situations for solo queue teams very stressful as not only do they not know where their teammates are slugged, they don't know where YOU are when you slugged them. I've been using Deerstalker just because I get tired of looking for all of the slugs after a game is over. Enduring and Spirit Fury are of course good options, especially since Oni can power through pallets with his power active, but both perks can actually be good on their own.
Let me explain: Of course Enduring is good for disrespecting pallets, but there is a strange bug with Spirit Fury, Oni, and Demogorgon too. The gist of this bug is that there is a priority check that happens when Oni is demon striking at a pallet or Demo is shredding one. Occasionally you may hear both the pallet stun and then break the pallet almost right afterwards, what just happened was that breaking the pallet with the killer's power took priority over getting stunned, thus the result is a broken pallet and the chase going on like normal. With an active Spirit Fury, if this same interaction occurs then the pallet will be broken before breaking it can take priority, thus leaving the killer standing still since there's nothing to do and you suffer no cooldown. TL;DR Have Spirit Fury ready, get both stunned and break a pallet as Oni or Demo with their power and suffer no stun and just march on like nothing happened. Thanks for listening to my TEDtalk.
I didn't intentionally leave them out, I left them out because I find them all significantly weaker than my setup. Knockout is countered by SWF, Infectious Fright outclasses Deerstalker, and Spirit Fury Enduring, while good, is two perks basically dedicated to just getting your first hit easier.
@@ScottJund Statistically, yes, but Infectious won't always show downed survivors on bigger maps similar to how you won't always run into SWF. I brought up Enduring and Spirit Fury mainly because I wanted to talk about that Spirit Fury bug and you are right that those two perks are investing too much into the early game. You mentioned before that this game is unpredictable and the devs themselves said to "Embrace Entity Chaos" in their 3rd anniversary stream. None of us can really predict what will happen in a match aside from what we bring in (assuming you don't browse through the survivors profiles to see if they're playing together) so I continue to run Knockout despite the risk and I enjoy using it along with the usual M&A and Infectious. TL;DR: I'm a hipster and I refuse to use BBQ and PGTW.
I feel like most everyone is on the same wavelength with Oni. I've seen a lot of people (including survivors) say that he is fun to play and play against. I give BHVR a lot of shit (and it's deserved in most cases) but they really knocked it out of the park with this killer.
I agree 100%. This Killer is so amazing. The perks are kind of lackluster, except for Nemesis, but other than that, Oni is definitely one of the best Killers they've ever released, in terms of power, enjoyment, and design

I'm just wondering if hitting a survivor and leaving for another one is also a good strat for getting his power? Imma test out your way because my example was what i normally do if i see 2 survivors next to each other
I'm waiting for infectious fright to appear on the shrine for my Oni. In the mean time, I need a substitute for tracking down other survivors aggressively. What perks do you recommend as a temporary fill-in? Or should I mix up my playstyle to compensate?

Gary Potter I’ve had that happen. But even in higher ranks, it only happens like 25% of the time. So I still find it worth while.

Now could you do a guide on how to counter Oni? When I play survivor against red rank Onis, if they happen to see me and have their power, it feels like there's absolutely nothing I can do to not go down instantly, except if I'm abusing a god window, which feels scummy to me... But if it's all I can do to not go down instantly, then of course I'm going to resort to it. Maybe there's more to it than what I'm seeing, but now that he's got his flick, I just can't seem to grasp it.

You really can't counter a GOOD oni just like how you can't counter a good nurse or a good spirit

I dont have a lot of perks on my Oni, so this is my budget Oni build:
Monitor and Abuse
A Nurses Calling
Discordance
Enduring/Brutal Strength
Monitor and abuse is self explanatory, its to easily catch up to unknowing survivors with demon dash because they wont hear me coming.
A Nurses Calling so that they either dont heal and keep giving me orbs or risk revealing themselves just to heal
Discordance i use to find grouped up survivors who are possibly collecting a lot of blood or can give me a lot of blood if i hit them when they are healthy.
Enduring/Brutal Strength are simply filler perks to help me in chases
I think i will keep a few of the other perks i used, especially Discordance, but i will also try to get Barbecue and Chili too

The Oni when he is in his fury mode reminds me of Demoknight. They're both powerful, cursed swordsmen that can charge very fast. By the way, this will defiantly help me play Oni, since I'm just getting back into him. Last time I played him, I had my first major breakdown on Dead by Daylight.

Discordance is usually a good pick on oni as he can make so much value out of it both in early game and during blood fury
discordance isnt a good pick on anyone because its hella inconsistent, barbecue has it built in, for certain killers tinkerer is better than barbecue and the oni is arguably one of them, but for killers like blight and hillbilly tinkerer is god tier, discordance isnt really good on anyone just because its inherently unreliable

I’m a main survivor and pretty much know how terrifying can be an Oni well played, but I also always felt he was kinda difficult to play so I never touch him when I went for a ritual or a rift challenge. And then I needed a few points for the rift and finally go for that 4 down in a match with Oni’s power and it was difficult indeed but also so much fun and sooo cool. I wanted to learn to play him and remembered Scott has a video tutorial about Oni and I’m here :)
Thank you very much mate. You just made me pick the Oni from my forbidden pool. I used to play him a couple times after purchasing and since I was very suck, I never use him again. And right after watching this video, I have 3 games which 2 of them are 4k. The fact about not holding W while dashing is a big deal but other pros don't mention it much. Other tips are also helpful I might have to watch again many times. Thanks for making such a good guide that make me eventually have fun with this character.

Yeah if you play ultra safe he's awful. Most maps have plenty of pallet and window setups that can keep Oni at bay. Spine chill hard counters monitor and abuse too.

Tier list based on difficulty of playing killer
I run Tinkerer , Overcharge , Pop and Third Seal on oni and it works pretty well. Tinkerer let's me run into survivors with the power so they either dont notice me and get downed or run away and I can secure the gen afterwards by kicking it. And third seal is frequently underestimated so they sometimes dont even bother to find and cleanse it while I can either safely slug or disrupt their object of obsession or some other aura perks. So far it works well in purple ranks but I'm still somewhat weak in terms of flicking so far. Tend to bump a lot of the time ;).

The Oni and the Doctor and Nurse Reworks are basically BHVR's attempts at making Calm Spirit a relevant perk.

That's why i use spinechill - such an underrated perk and very useful for a lot of killers nowaday. Playing against oni - it is better to drop a pallet early rather then get hit by him. It's actually the only Killer where it really is a game changer from the beginning.
Yup, I've become addicted to that perk and I can't take it off. Same with Bond.
The regular demon strike lunge can be good for short loops and tight corners, I've seen Monto get some sexy hits like that and the lunge is really good. On a farm map on the hay bale loop with the pallet in the middle of it, I managed to get a survivor with the very tip of the lunge just at the end of my power as well and it won me the game. Don't underestimate the regular lunge, its very difficult to aim and maneuver though but its good. Also the Lunge is good for pressuring pallet drops and breaking the pallet or downing the survivor just like demogorgon.
Funny Fact (but I don't know if it was changed or patched) but I noticed as a survivor that if you teabag real fast you drop a bunch of blood orb, so for your Oni mains out there, survivors BMing you work in your favors
they patched it a while ago, though it still causes a few more to drop
Remington yes it speeds up the blood drop quickly it reduces timer by 0.5 seconds each times you crouch time to drop blood is 4 seconds

i find it hilarious how relevant this continues to be almost three years after oni's release because he's not changed at all and the perk changes didn't affect him too much. three things are certain, death, taxes and oni's iridescents being garbage

Would have been good to add some counter strategies. I think early game healing yourself when you are wounded or getting as far away as possible from your allies would be somewhat helpful in slowing down your blood absorption.
I hate when I accidently do the non-strike Oni attack, you know, the one that isn’t a one shot? I hate it because it disorients me a lot, the camera moves so much that he might as well just do a flip.

Knock Out is great unless you go against SWF at which point it useless. So overall Im not a fan

Hey Scott, I have a big problem with Oni that I asked about on Reddit and was directed here. For some reason a lot of the time when I go for demon strikes, my Oni will snap to a completely different direction, instantaneously, sometimes I swear to god 180 degrees. Watching this video, I see you didn't touch on that and didn't see yours do that once. Is there something i'm very badly missing here or is Oni just actually bugged right now? On another note, i've tried doing some practice swings away from survivors and it seems to work seemingly normal then even with a wide flick. Is it possibly the aim assist which I cannot disable doing this? PC btw.
Yes Oni is bugged. What you described has been in the game for a very, VERY long time now, we all fucking hate it. It seems to only happen on successful hits so while it doesn't technically ROB you of hits, having your camera forced some other direction is disorienting to say the least. It really sucks with Infectious, since Oni spends quite a long time looking down at the floor after a hit, he already has less time than most other Killers to actually look at all of the screams. When you get whipped backwards that's even less time because now you have to waste time correcting your camera too.
@@Space_Australian I actually have been robbed of some aoe hits since it doesn't seem to hit more than 1 survivor when it does that. Thanks for the info, pretty disappointing since it seems they turn a blind eye to it though.

You never mentioned any other perks that also synergize with Oni. Knockout, Deerstalker, Enduring, and Spirit Fury are also great candidates that you can switch with BBQ and PGTW. Knockout can make slugging situations for solo queue teams very stressful as not only do they not know where their teammates are slugged, they don't know where YOU are when you slugged them. I've been using Deerstalker just because I get tired of looking for all of the slugs after a game is over. Enduring and Spirit Fury are of course good options, especially since Oni can power through pallets with his power active, but both perks can actually be good on their own.
Let me explain: Of course Enduring is good for disrespecting pallets, but there is a strange bug with Spirit Fury, Oni, and Demogorgon too. The gist of this bug is that there is a priority check that happens when Oni is demon striking at a pallet or Demo is shredding one. Occasionally you may hear both the pallet stun and then break the pallet almost right afterwards, what just happened was that breaking the pallet with the killer's power took priority over getting stunned, thus the result is a broken pallet and the chase going on like normal. With an active Spirit Fury, if this same interaction occurs then the pallet will be broken before breaking it can take priority, thus leaving the killer standing still since there's nothing to do and you suffer no cooldown. TL;DR Have Spirit Fury ready, get both stunned and break a pallet as Oni or Demo with their power and suffer no stun and just march on like nothing happened. Thanks for listening to my TEDtalk.
I didn't intentionally leave them out, I left them out because I find them all significantly weaker than my setup. Knockout is countered by SWF, Infectious Fright outclasses Deerstalker, and Spirit Fury Enduring, while good, is two perks basically dedicated to just getting your first hit easier.
@@ScottJund Statistically, yes, but Infectious won't always show downed survivors on bigger maps similar to how you won't always run into SWF. I brought up Enduring and Spirit Fury mainly because I wanted to talk about that Spirit Fury bug and you are right that those two perks are investing too much into the early game. You mentioned before that this game is unpredictable and the devs themselves said to "Embrace Entity Chaos" in their 3rd anniversary stream. None of us can really predict what will happen in a match aside from what we bring in (assuming you don't browse through the survivors profiles to see if they're playing together) so I continue to run Knockout despite the risk and I enjoy using it along with the usual M&A and Infectious.
TL;DR: I'm a hipster and I refuse to use BBQ and PGTW.

I feel like most everyone is on the same wavelength with Oni. I've seen a lot of people (including survivors) say that he is fun to play and play against. I give BHVR a lot of shit (and it's deserved in most cases) but they really knocked it out of the park with this killer.
I agree 100%. This Killer is so amazing. The perks are kind of lackluster, except for Nemesis, but other than that, Oni is definitely one of the best Killers they've ever released, in terms of power, enjoyment, and design

I'm an aspiring oni main and i learned a bunch from this vid. Didn't know not to hold forward. I'm just wondering if hitting a survivor and leaving for another one is also a good strat for getting his power? Imma test out your way because my example was what i normally do if i see 2 survivors next to each other
If you can hit another survivor in less than 30 seconds its worth. Otherwise no stay on the first one

I'm waiting for infectious fright to appear on the shrine for my Oni. In the mean time, I need a substitute for tracking down other survivors aggressively. What perks do you recommend as a temporary fill-in? Or should I mix up my playstyle to compensate?
