I've tried all the Gatsby colors thru the years and settled with Red for my short/med hair. This product provides volume and a semi-matte med hold for the entire day. Works great with many hairstyles, especially good for quiffs & pomps.

I love gatsy, due to the Takaya Kimura's campaign, been using the moving rubber since high school. Actually the moving rubber series is more for making layer hair style with fringe/bang typical in Asian guys. I would suggest using the more recent pomade series from gatsby for slickback/grow-up hair style which is what I am using now. Gatsby has some failed products like the moving mist and water wax (their CM was good though), but the moving rubber is a timeless product.

Hi. I used to use Revlon "Creator Matt Clay" a lot. However Revlon has discontinued it and its replacement is called "Matt Clay" (its a pink jar now). But the formula is completely different and now it feels weak and as generic as any other hair clay. What I really liked about it was that it left my hair with a "dry and sandy like" sensation with texture and a good hold from the moment I applied it to my hair, even if it was damp. Its been years now and I cant find a similar replacement. I have tried products like Calymation and Baxter Clay Pomade, but all of them feel smooth and more wet. Does anyone have any similar product suggestions?

  • @electthelambda

The Gatsby Air Rise works as a great prestyler. If you checc anymore things in the product line, make sure to pick that up. (It is also the best smelling in my opinion, like green apple 🍏)

The air totally ruins it, what can I do?
Use Hair Gel in combination with it or what?

you could've chosen the purple, green, and gray one, since they are the ones that provide the most hold and volume (and would be the most appropriate products for the hairstyle you're going for)
if you tested the whole entire line like VO5 then maybe you would've liked it more
i personally own the green and purple one, and the purple one seems to have more hold than the gray one probably because it is designed to tame short-medium length hair and the gray one only for short, though the purple gatsby provides a small amount of shine which would be good for you because you stated that a super matte finish looks too dry, and the purple one would be perfect for the type of matte finish or natural finish you're talking about

I'm asian, and I use gatsby but only the green moving rubber for my hair, which honestly, was bad for me because I go for a quiff not a normal natural hairstyle like a 2 block. I still use it and it works for my hair because its silky and smooth but I can't maintain the quiff throughout the day, maybe for like, half the school day or workday. I do recommend this for people with thick hair and straight hair like mine.

The green Gatsby is not really the right one to use for a quiff that needs a stronger type hold. Green is for volume 'air swept' styles, and is good for Asians (like myself) whose thin straight hair has trouble keeping volume.
You should maybe try the purple Gatsby for a quiff.

I wonder what the consistency is like in manufacturing. When I used it, Spiky Edge’s hold wore off in like an hour. Also, it was very obviously wet-looking, yet I only used a dime-sized blob. It looked nice at first, but once the hold wore off, it just looked and felt gross. Go with Grunge Mat, if you want hold and a true matte - though, grunge mat’s hold is not titanium either (use a prestyler).

I believe there is a paper strapped on the packaging that gives info on the level for hold, shine, etc on each product when you are going to buy it om store. I remember thats how i decided to buy the green one, since it has great hold but not too much and a tiny little shine (like 3 star on hold and 1 star on shine)

good video Joe! but along with the styling capabilities, i think you could have also mentioned whether they are good or bad for the hair. i hear some cheaper products can be somewhat damaging.

Waiting for this for ages! Finally I get to know how Gatsby works on other types of hair besides Asians (like me). Too bad you did not try the purple one.
P.s.: In Asia, the containers are plastic sealed (in shops) and information on the seal state information about the hold, application , etc. I guess Amazon does not include that seal?
