Boy where should I start, this is basically a replay of their match against Brazil. Call this a battle between the two most undersized setters and the two best liberos in this tournament.
Ishikawa wasn’t performing in the beginning but his service pressure and out of system plays were absolutely incredible, the back set to Miyaura got me jumped out of my bed. Ran and Miyaura were absolutely dominating in the start and just when I thought Ran might be too tired for the fifth set, his back row attack proved me wrong and I dare say none of them were shut down so far, 32 points in this match and now sitting at no.2 as the best scorer, 60% overall attack efficiency, no one even come close to that number in the top 30. Don’t even get me started on the phenomenal digs he made, all these only at 188cm and 21yo.
Japan made way more mistakes than Argentina but what I saw is them risking everything to score and win the game. They’re getting more aggressive so consistency will be the key to win the following games. De Cecco might be able to turn this around but until then, imma sit back and wait for their match against USA and Italy.

At this point, Japan should consider permanently starting Miyura over Nishida for the rest of the VNL. Miyura is better blocker, better attacker on better efficiency against the best two teams Japan has played so far. Nishida is flashier but gets blocked way too often. I can still see Japan using Nishida in backrow for defense, but Miyura has earned his starting spot IMO. He crushed it this game against Loser - maybe the best MB in VNL 2023 so far.

The match with France in last year's VNL was absolutely amazing, I still remember when Earvin Ngapeth deceived Nishida with his moves, and then Nishida jumped up reflexively to block
It was one of the cutest moments 😂
