In a recent, exclusive track-by-track feature with Metal Hammer, vocalist Mikael Åkerfeldt gave some insight behind the creation of the song: “It’s a song inspired by “Dun Ringil”l by Jethro Tull (from the album Stormwatch, 1979). I wanted to do a song with my capo really high, so it’s up on the fifth fret. It makes the guitar sound really glittery. I just wanted to go for a simple, catchy vocal melody. It has a slightly positive vibe to it, but the lyrics are really, really dark. It’s a beautiful song, I think. I’m really happy with that one.”

2016 marks the monumental return of one of heavy rock’s most unique, revered and fearless bands of the last three decades, Opeth. Over the years, the experimental, prog veterans have continuously reinvented themselves, pushing the boundaries of their craft and expectations of fans and critics alike.
OPETH’s new album, Sorceress, their first for Nuclear Blast via the band’s imprint label Moderbolaget Records, is proof chief architect Mikael Åkerfeldt has a near-endless well of greatness inside. From the album’s opener 'Persephone' to 'The Wilde Flowers' and 'Strange Brew' to the album’s counterpart title tracks 'Sorceress' and 'Sorceress II', OPETH’s twelfth full-length is an unparalleled adventure, where visions cleverly and secretly change, colors mute as if weathered by time, and sounds challenge profoundly.
Sorceress Track List:
1. Persephone
2. Sorceress
3. The Wilde Flowers
4. Will O The Wisp
5. Chrysalis
6. Sorceress 2
7. The Seventh Sojourn
8. Strange Brew
9. A Fleeting Glance
10. Era
11. Persephone (Slight Return)
”The new album "Sorceress" is our 12th studio album since our beginnings in 1990,” says Åkerfeldt. “I find it difficult to understand that we’ve been going on for 26 years, let alone that we’ve made 12 records now, all of which I am very proud of. ”Sorceress” is no exception. I love this album, as does the whole band. I wrote the music during 5-6 months and we spent only 12 days recording it at Rockfield studios in Wales. I find that once again we’ve taken a step forward. Or sideways, Or backwards. Somewhere!? It’s different! It’s extremely diverse. And if I may say so myself, extremely good. I feel the right to say that since I like to think I know this band better than anyone on the planet. Also, I always manage to detach myself from the record and listen as a fan. It’s a fine little record. My favorite in our discography right now. Of course. That’s how it should be, right? It’s both fresh and old, both progressive and rehashed. Heavy and calm. Just the way we like it. Hopefully there’ll be others around the globe sharing this opinion. It was a joy to make it. A fucking joy to record it, and a sheer joy listening to it. So there you have it!”
For Sorceress, OPETH returned to Rockfield Studios in Wales, also home to pivotal releases from Queen, Rush and Judas Priest, where the Swedes had tracked Pale Communion in 2014 with Tom Dalgety. The band spent 12 days recording at the countryside venue among its serene and inspiring surroundings. The result is nothing short of a powerful and intriguing record that will add yet another layer to the band’s celebrated career.

Opeth is whatever the hell Opeth wants to be. They just happen to be very good at whatever that may be.
Yup!
best comment on here.
I used to listen to nothing but metal. I feel as I've aged I've really lost my taste for growling vocals and the like. I'm really happy Opeth seems to have kind of evolved along with me.
somnambulist46 likewise im 23 now and listen to Electronic Music, Folk Rock, Classical Music, Opera etc... anything but rap or country
Spoken like a true Opeth fan! Bravo ! B-)
Here is a quote from an interview...
In a recent, exclusive track-by-track feature with Metal Hammer, vocalist Mikael Åkerfeldt gave some insight behind the creation of the song:

So yes, the song is inspired by a particular Jethro Tull song.
thanks!
...which can only be a good thing. If you want inspiration, Tull's the way to go!
The uniqueness of Opeth is that when I want to rock out to metal I can listen to them. And when I'm in the mood to chill and listen to mellow stuff, I can also listen to them. Opeth is a phenomenal band, Mikael is a genius. That they are this far into thier career and continue to produce true gems, memorable gems, gems you wanna keep playing on repeat, is a testament to how special this band is. Some may not agree, but my ears are satisfied more often than not, and this coming from a person who's preference is metal, through and through.
Try out Devin Townsend if you like having metal and also chill stuff
Steven Wilson as well!
Well Said!
couldn't have said it any better. i used to be a pure metal only listener. opeth has made music of all types a huge part if my life. its all due to them. they are awe inspiring. thr only other band that does that to me is Frank zappa. opeth changed my life quite literally. i consume myself in music all because of them
Henry Lozano I get the same with Tool.
opeth. always my favorite band. their music always reminds me of a foggy forrest.
I hear that. Or Lord of the Rings
For me it's always the view of a cloudy sky and a really old town or forest
Foggy forest for sure, some guy (or girl can't remember which) made a really cool music video compiling loads of fan made Opeth wallpapers mostly of spooky forests and cool looking castles and stuff. I love it
if you like that kind of effect then check out agalloch of you haven't already
Recently bought Agalloch's The Mantle.Great stuff, loved the vibe, but found it a little bland and single flavored. Any other suggestions?
Lyrics
When you're tired of waiting and time is not on your side
When you're tired of hating me, you no longer want to hide
You're stuck to the failures of your life
Marred with the sorrows of your strife
And time it waits for no one
It heals them when you die
And soon you are forgotten
A whisper within a sigh
When there's trouble admitting that you have been wrong all along
When the words you have written down reads "everything is gone"
You're stuck to the failures of your life
Marred with the sorrows of your strife
And time it waits for no one
It heals them when you die
And soon you are forgotten
A whisper within a sigh
And time it waits for no one
It heals them when you die
And soon you are forgotten
A whisper within a sigh
When you smother your friendships and take much more than you need
When you can't keep a secret to yourself and points to the source of the deed
You're stuck to the failures of your life
Marred with the sorrows of your strife
And you can never find the satisfaction
When you can't outgrow your false distractions
You know your soul is weighed on the silver scale of deceit and lies

Had the same thought.
Wouldn't be out of place on Songs From The Wood.
First thing I thought to myself was, "Akerfeldt must've been listening to Jethro Tull"
Yeah, this is the first thing I tought. :-)
go fuck yourself
Absolutely gorgeous…an amazing Jethro Tull/Ian Anderson feeling here. Opeth goes from absolute Black Death to white light in a flash and that’s what I love about them. Pure genius…
The song is heavily influenced by Tull's Dun Ringill.
I too thought of Jethro Tull
Absolutely 💯 I see alot of Tull influence in many of their songs along with Cream , and CSNY
Can’t believe this song is 4 yrs old already , time flies so quick
*4 and a half years old
And another reminder that I'm old as hell...great...thanks.
@@jaykurtz4364 It's 5 years old right now...
"And time, it waits for no one..."
Blackwater park was 10 years ago, let that sink in..
That guitar outro is stunning. Genuinely beautiful.
I cannot tell you, Opeth, how much I love the passion you put in your work.
This (hopefully) endless journey you began in 1995 has been the most varied, beautiful, and inspiring I've ever undertaken.
With your unique approach of creating music that is original and true to yourselves, not getting imprisoned in a single genre or style to not "betray" (a word so easily thrown out these days) part of your fans/producers and eventually inevitably lose your inspiration along the years, like so many bands before you did, you manage to dish out masterpiece after masterpiece. To this day I can't say I've found a single track of yours to be uninspired, boring, or a track to just make some money. In a 21-year career in such a creative and demanding art like music, that's extraordinarily INCREDIBLE.
21 years later and I'm still here, not knowing what to expect from the next album, excited about what change you brought in this time, instead of the usual fearful expectation I have with other bands, scared of "maybe this is the album where they sell out and lose their magic".
I don't know how you do it, but please, PLEASE, keep on doing it \m/
Very well said!
Always Opeth Thank you!
you are so right about that..its been 4 years here!such soulful music
i don't know why i started crying while reading this comment, tears of joy :')
I couldn't agree more, well said.
Why are people hating on this? This song is beautiful
Elitists. That's why.
@Talha Jubair Was a prog death metal band* And they have been going in this prog-rock/Metal direction for quite a good while now.
@Talha Jubair Opeth is exactly whatever Mike say s they are at a given time. Not what some tiny brained elitist dbags fans say.
small brain
who cares? just enjoy
The Jethro Tull touch here is perfection.
Finally, it sounds like if Mickael composed a song for Ian Anderson, or if Opeth began in the early 70's.
This is how combines personnality and influences for the best
Maybe it makes Jethro Tull finally worthy of that Heavy Metal Grammy.
Have to agree, a bit of a tribute (albeit utterly brilliant) to Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull.
@@Banana_Split_Cream_Buns I've been to live gigs by both and enjoyed a lot. Though 50th anniversary tour of Jethro Tull demonstrated, that people age unlike their sound, which is ever improving. Opeth can overtake 'em in less than 2o years
You can tell Mikael does not give two shit about hiding his swedish accent anymore, ahah. A sign of confidence for sure.
I am so glad that I am fortunate enough to enjoy both death metal and prog sides of opeth.
Awesome track...
Emm I'm sure you mean death metal and rock sides, because they were death/prog all the time up until 2008.
if you like both vocal styles, try the band, Between The Burried and Me. The record they released last year Coma Ecliptic is a masterpiece of prog and death metal.
Same
For me hessian peel sums up their whole career musically. Acoustic parts, clean vocals, growls, the whole package in one song
@@danielashdown23 for me.. It'll be Black rose immortal
The "Hmm"s on the 5 of 6/8 at 2:18 brought tears to my eyes.
I honestly like their softer stuff more. This, to bid you farewell, Windowpane, in my time of need. And among other songs. This song specifically is fun to sing in the shower or to play when you are driving through a dense forest
I personally like the heavier stuff more. But I'm open to the possibility that I might outgrow that once the teenage angst fades. I find it hard to imagine a real person who wants to be in that mood all the time.

Masterful comment. you are a professional
This is a lush, gorgeous track. Shades of Jethro Tull perhaps? Mikael's voice really shines on this song, the guitar tone is lovely too. Newer Opeth (Watershed onwards) is perhaps more divisive than the classic run of albums from Still Life to Ghost Reveries, but we are lucky to have someone as creative as Mikael.
a strong contribution to the comments for this song
People like you are why i still believe in humanity even if a lot are retarded. It's like a light in the black ! Thank you man.
Agree strongly with the Jethro Tull likeness... even the voice. On some tracks I can hear a Todd Rungren likeness. As an aged Yes Fan I love the tempo and changes of direction in a lot of this music.... I am a new Opeth Fan.
This song helped me overcome a depression that lasted 2 years. I must say Opeth and Weed can really change the world.
And Psychedelics, although, Super Lemon Haze for life

What a piece, simple in construction but, incredible thought, harmonies, framework and melody. Mr Anderson must be chuckling under his breath. It is truly great that Opeth are bringing this genre back. I am pleased that the young musicians of today can have their very own 'Tull' to listen to. Everything is cyclical.
this is like a mix of Damnation and Watershed albums sounds, i like it
I like this song. It doesn't seem like the old Opeth, but this new genre is just awesome as well
yes, totally agree
You mean folk music, arguably one of the oldest genres of music ever?
+The Abyssal Archivist folk might be old as much as it could be, but for Opeth it is pretty new
Okay what you said made it seem like a completely new genre they were creating and that got me confused.
Actually I think this song would fit with Damnation album perfectly. But I agree. Till this day I haven't found a way to Heritage but Pale Communion really got me and Sorceress seems to be even better based on these two tracks. They still keep evolving and improving. Saw them on Pale Communion tour with Alcest and it was the second best concert I've ever been to.
Imagine driving through the mountains and this song playing in the car.
Is it just me or is anyone else getting a medieval vibe?
I get a Jethro Tull vibe, so, yeah, kinda
Absolutely no one. Medieval music wasn't even in 440 hz. You need to listen to more music.

Absolutely agree, my first thought.
I still love Jethro Tull doe.
first feeling in the starting seconds of the singing :) quite a warm and fuzzy feeling, i like it!
I'm with you, I thought Jethro Tull here, and Black Sabbath with "Sorceress". Going 70's style for this album.
Yeah this sounds like Opeth :) Really love this song as it sounds like a cross between Damnation and Watershed
No it doesn't. It sounds like Jethro Tull. Not that I'm complaining, though, I really like this one.
So you think Opeth have sounded like Jethro Tull From Blackwater Park till Watershed?
I think you've been listening to something different from BP to Watershed mate.
Both sound like Opeth though whereas Heritage and Pale Communion don't!
+BlackDildoBoyWithDiabetes LovesHorseCock i can kinda here watershed but not BP
To me, this is a song of a man taking stock of his life after severe loss, something like divorce. He’s reliving the past and going over every small detail for some clue he missed the first time around, but it’s not there.
All that he sees is himself, the source of the deed.
That guitar lead at the end of this song gives me goosebumps every time. It is so tasteful, works perfectly with the accompaniment, and that tone is incredible. Like honey on the ears. They've got so many great solos- complex and shreddy, bluesy and soulful, sometimes both- but this is one on my favorites. I could listen to it on repeat.
The first time I was thinking "well I'd change that" here and there... A few listens later I realise it's absolutely perfect. Absolutely perfect.
The most organic band in the world, mikael's soul is ageless moving from era to era. when i listen to Opeth time stands still
Sounds like Jethro Tull as interpreted by Opeth
Thought the exact same thing.
Sounds like Deep Purple.
Definitely, I don’t know Opeth at all but this song was randomly in my spotify playlist. I thought it was Jethro until I looked.

Opeth will always be one of my favorites. Can't wait for the new album.
Beautiful. This song could fit on so many Opeth albums.
Beautiful! Sounds like Damnation meets Harvest

Amazing song from and amazing band. Been a huge Opeth fan for 15 - 16 years now and it has been a pleasure to grow as a person in tandem with their ever evolving sound. Mikael Åkerfeldt is an absolute treasure.

With Opeth, no matter how an album is sounding, it'll be good music. This is real artistic talent. I'll follow them trough all their journey.
What a beautiful song. Great melodies, great lyrics. For many years now, opeth is my favourite band to listen. Love the old era and still love them as much.

This video is fantastic. Kudos to the person who put that together.
This song reminds me of the movie I saw with Linda Manz - "Days of Heaven" It's like when you're young you can live care-free in days of splendor with someone you love. But then you suddenly find yourself longing those days, so long ago. And they are gone forever and you wish you could go back to at least say goodbye.
This is just a perfect song. Almost like it was just waiting to be written.
Opeth are beyond magical , there is so much amazing music , but this is something else
That outro guitar lead gives me life
Mikael's version of 'Trains'
This gets stuck in my head over and over again, but never bothers me one bit. Great writing!
I first found Opeth upon the release of Still Life. That album and this band reinvigorated my love of Heavy Metal, which at that point had become a little stagnant. Don’t misunderstand, I still liked my HM, I’ve never stopped listening to it, but there wasn’t anything around that blew me away. Still Life was what I was looking for. But what I couldn’t understand was why I hadn’t heard of Opeth before. Perhaps because at the time I had young kids, I don’t know. Anyway, I’m drifting from my original point. Opeth became my new favourite Heavy Metal band and that feeling remains to this day; despite the band taking a slightly different direction, I still love them implicitly. They’ve matured and become masters of their art. This track, Will O The Wisp, is just magical to me. The arrangements, the vocal and lyrics - perfection. Thank you Mikael. Your band and music mean the world to me.
OMG Worthy tribute to Jethro Tull!
Fantastic. And the "Sorceress" Album is all a Masterpiece. I love it all. Thank you Opeth for healing my days, every day.❤️
I love this lyrical video. Beautiful visuals with a beautiful song. Looks like this album will be pretty diverse judging from the two singles released so far! Looking forward to it.
I've been listening to Opeth since the age of 12. I'm 22 now, and they're music is still so innovative. This song speaks to me in a very personal way that it's almost eerie...anyway, what a great song. Long live Opeth!

Honestly, that whole long guitar outro by Fredrik is actually beautiful. First time I heard it to the undoubtedly hundredth time now. Outstanding talent. 👍
When the song changes a 3:03... My god is that a beautiful transition. This is why Opeth will forever be my favorite band.
Okay this is PHENOMENAL. There was so much Jethro Tull in that I loved it! There's been a cheesiness, or experimental nature, in this new phase that I couldn't put my finger on, but it sounds like it's finally gone. This is really mature songwriting, Mikael is cemented as a fucking musical genius! The production, pulling back on the keys and using them more effectively, Axe's drums... it works beautifully. And that bluesy Strat tone in the solo, holy shit man! This is gonna be one hell of a record!

Yes it will for sure!
The little solo near the end. Oh my god, every time i hear it i feel it throughout my entire being. It is near perfection for such a simple but effective passage.
It's very beautiful, especially paired with the visuals. Not a huge fan of the lyrics though, a bit mundane. Damnation's lyrics were much more subtle and mysterious.
Agreed about Damnation's lyrics. This seems more... straightforward? :P
I fucking loved the lyrics! :D

Another wonderful masterpiece of opeth! all of they touched was turned to pure gold!
As always, the passing youtube user whose time it is to reveal his grateful appreciation. Thank you, opeth.
The best song of Sorceress in my opinion. I really love this song, similar to Harvest, and Mikael singing so clear, with the guitars and all the background instruments. I miss more songs like this in the album, the res of it t is a bit jazzy... which I honestly enjoy less.
It reminds me of the damnation album
Well, almost all Opeth album has ballad stuff like this one. Damnation album is entirely similar to this, also their last few records.
THIS is what I thought Heritage was going to sound like when I first heard about how that album was going to be.
I always wanted more songs like harvest or the acoustic passages from heavy songs, Damnation was amazing but it wasn't that, and this song is like a mix of Damnation & those classic Opeth acoustic bits. If Heritage (& pale communion to a lesser extent) were songs like this one, I would've loved those albums and I don't think fans would've been as dissapointed.
Great album. It's like he gave us all of his creativity in one album.
I can't wait to hear this live , beautiful piece of work!
Greatest band on Earth. This song is just incredible as is the last. Can't wait for the entire album to release.
It's FINNALLY here autumn in Wisconsin it's my favorite season for Opeth
I appreciate Opeth being real about what depression really does, whether that was their original point or not. Often people write hopeful, cheery music full of unrealistic stereotypes to try and encourage us. That's not true, depression kills it's initial victim slowly and then it moves along to the people in this person's life infecting them as well. These lyrics remind me of what will happen if I don't fight this shit every day and take care of myself mentally and physically.
"You know your soul is weighed on the silver scale of deceit and lies". Never before had zero been so valuable.
Please everyone BUY this album or support them anyway you can. They have put so much thought and feeling into their music for so many years, they deserve it. One of the only band I can say do not have a bad song.
Holy shit, this song is amazing. I need this album, NOW.
Just heard them in Tempe in AZ and they were honestly one of the best sounding live acts I've heard. The sword too, who opened.
The mini solo hits right in the nerves....painfully beautiful...
I'm really hoping akerfeldt and Townsend really do start that project together
It seem a continuation from Pale Communion
I hear that the same. Especially in his vocals.
That's true. Nevertheless, I loved this song!
As well
I dont want them to try to make a pale comunion 2, because it is bound to fail. they need to continue their musical evolution imo
good.
Opeth is perfection...still. My first Opeth album was Black Orchid and I was hooked by every subsequent release thereafter. I do miss the old line up, but their sound is timeless.
imo one of the best acoustic songs ever. I really like this one
