magnolia followed by synecdoche? you truly have the best patreon voters
Sorry to comment again but just wanted to say it’s amazing that a major film studio (New Line) allowed Anderson to make this film however he wanted. Due to the success of his previous film (Boogie Nights which is would make for an awesome watch) he was given the freedom to be as ambitious as possible. Be even got to design the poster and edit the trailer himself.
Probably the scene where Frank sees his father in his death bed. Such a powerful performance from everyone in that scene so heartbreaking.
Aimee Mann's soundtrack is like a supporting character in this movie.
100% agreed!
From what I understand, PTA was so inspired by Aimee Mann's songwriting that he wrote this movie around her music.
Her song, Save Me is everything
mom actually has this soundtrack. I put it on my fiio player
From what I heard from Mark Kermode, one of the songs, maybe Wise Up, was supposed to be used in one of Adam Sandler's projects, but it didn't happened. So PTA took the song and decided to use in his next movie. Yeah, from my knowledge he likes Adam Sandler, that's why Punch Drunk Love exists.
What a bloody tragedy that Hoffman is not here any more.
Every time I think about it my heart breaks all over again. He left such an impression on the world and he was only just beginning to touch the surface.
What a crazy life heroin addicts have.
Thankful to God that I know myself well enough that heroin would feel so good, nothing else matters, not friends, family, morals, God.
Heroin becomes your God.
I would love the initial feeling and lose everything chasing it. Tragedy.
Thank you Jesus, I have never.
Bless those who have tried heroin and need your help.
Cruises best acting in my opinion. Thought he was gonna win supporting actor Oscar
Yup damn right!
I like how his acting in this movie complements very well his acting in Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut, which was released in the very same year. In Magnolia he could purge all the feelings he had to retain in Eyes Wide Shut, which was such a hard film for him to make (and might have contributed to the falling of his marriage). Two of his greatest performances in the same year.
I agree he should have won an Oscar. However, Tom Cruise did win a Golden Globe award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance.
@@natedoggg2002 yep. Would have been cool to hear Academy award winner Tom Cruise.
Crazy how he has 3 nominations and he’s practically the craziest stuntman of all time.
Thought the 6th Sense kid would've won it...but michael caine pulled the rug from under everyone that year...😁
“I wonder why they keep showing the weather”... lol...you will find out
James most common reactions so far:
"oh man"
"love this shot"
"im loving this editing"
"let me know what you guys think"
new reaction added to the list:
" wow *nervous laughter* wow"
If you look carefully at the background of the film, sometimes you can catch random signs and things that say "Exodus 8:2" which is a bible verse that quotes, "But if you refuse to let them go, behold, I will smite all your territory with frogs." PTA foreshadows the rain of frogs, and the symbolism there is heavy.
"Let them go" the things that everybody holds deep inside..
PTA has said that he was unaware of the biblical story until someone on set pointed it out. He added the references at that point, and ion editting.
The frog story was based on real events, ones the he read about as a kid in a book about strange facts from history. That what the quiz kid was referencing when he says "This is something that happens." also the zoom in on the picture frame where that slip of paper says "But it did happen...", when PTA knew the audience would have been saying "Oh, come on!"
@@JPDillon I've heard of weird rainfalls such as of nickels, bird blood and nails from a facts book back in 2013; so I didn't find the raining frogs non-sensical.
I think this is a masterpiece even though PTA has said that with him still being pretty young at the time, he kinda overloaded the movie with emotion. But that's just why it's so impactful. Cruise's best performance and one of the greatest in history, IMO.
Tom Cruise absolutely destroyed it, and that’s saying a lot with all these brilliant performances
Born on the 4th of July is a greaat Cruise performance
@@marlonthemarvellous For sure, the best of his leading roles. People forget how great he is because of the blockbuster stuff in the last 20yrs. Color of Money, Collateral, Eyes Wide Shut, Few Good Men, Rain Man, even the first M:I are amazing.
@@janpuhar9614 deffo. Im a closet Tom Cruise fan. For the blockbusters but also for hiss great acting roles. Sad the Scientology and goodd looks have got in the way of an actually great actor. P. S. I forgot how good he was in Rain man. Just as goodd ass Dustin
I absolutely agree.
Best John C. Riley & Tom Cruise performances of their career imo.
Yup!
Oh I dunno. John C. Riley put a LOT into Walk Hard. Recorded 30 songs for it. Has to be the most committed performance in a silly comedy ever.
@@joshknightfall yes he is such an odd actor to me. Doing mostly goofy comedy but when I see his serious roles, they kind of help highlight how much works he puts into everything. Also sometimes his serious roles are really bizarre like him being the dad in We need to talk about Kevin
He was really great in "Criminal" as well, a little known con movie.
This movie literally changed my life. When I first saw it I’d moved two thousand kilometres from my home town due to a really bad life experience.
But the move wasn’t enough. I’d had a drinking problem which only escalated being away from home. So I saw this movie and that part when each character reaches there own “ breaking point” really affected me. I understood what was actually happening. The funny thing was I was reaching my own turning point and the movie ended up triggering my own one.
I’ll never forget it.
I’m a bit confused if you’re saying that this film changed your life for better or for worse
@@DevyanshBahri It made me realise that it was within my power to move on. I wasn’t alone.
Yes! Such a masterpiece. Every element is on point. HBO's Euphoria owes a lot to this film.
I haven’t seen that show but heard lots about it!
@@JamesVSCinema You gotta check it out sometime. Got some heavy themes, but it's incredibly well done.
@Randy White Levinson is a big PTA fan. Euphoria's camerawork and music are very Magnolia-esque, especially the montages and ep 4 (the carnival). Other influences are noticeable (Scorcese, DePalma, Baz Luhrmann, Gaspar Noe, My So-Called Life) but PTA is the most obvious. Check out some of his interviews.
@J B I think you're missing my point, which was that Levinson pulls heavily from PTA (and other innovative directors like DePalma, Gaspar Noe, Baz Luhrmann, etc.). It will be a while before he masters his skill as a director and develops a signature style.
@@lara314 Just because a film/show contains rapid camera movement doesn't mean it's particularly close to PTA'S early style.
Jason Robards (the actor that played the role of Tom Cruise's father) actually had lung cancer during the filming of Magnolia and this was his last performance before he died.
When the cop finds the body in the closet, and the lady says, "That ain't mine!"
I use that quote from this movie in her voice every time I defend myself to anybody. Lol love that line will Never forget it. Best movie Ever
For anyone interested “That Moment - Magnolia” is the making of documentary to this film. It’s the most thorough and candid making of documentary I have ever seen and is a great behind the scenes look at a film production from Pre production through post.
Tom Cruise purportedly improvised sections of T.J. Mackey's final meeting with his father.
That’s awesome!
He did! If I remember correctly, everything after he says, "I am not gonna cry for you!" was improvised by Cruise.
Yes he did. And the dialouge I dont know if its true he didnt like it. But TC had excact same relationship with his father as Mackey did. So that acting was REAL man. And thats probably why he choose to just go with the flow instead.
@@ImperialMJG wow, really? that's something!!!
That scene where every character starts singing is so heartwarming and emotionally tangible. Love your reaction James
Happy to hear that Mobbie!!
When William H Macy finally breaks down after the frog rain is so earth shattering.
Melora Walters' character slowly looking up at the camera and smiling is just the perfect ending to this film and one of my all-time favorite ending shots to a film. And, as others have mentioned, on a rewatch, look for all of the 82 sightings in the film, foreshadowing (as an Exodus 8:2 reference) the frog scene.
That little fourth wall break has always killed me.
PTA is my second favorite director, and this is my second favorite film from him (: i highly recommend punch-drunk love (which is my favorite)
@doogie Five-Four boogie nights is fantastic!

Absolutely my favorite movie of all time, it’s not for everyone because of how massive it is, but I think that the runtime is justified. Such a beautiful and well crafted movie.
Same. My favorite movie. It's impossible to explain what it's about... I always just say "it's about life." cause it touches on almost everything I've ever experience. It's both raw and masterfully crafted at the same time, which is an almost impossible line to walk. I think PTA's youth actually helped him not overthink things. As you said tho, it's not everyone's cup of tea.
It's my favorite movie too. Tied with Blade Runner.
Paul THomas Anderson is the best ever. Period.
Another Good movie You should watch is a movie called Being John Malcovic. Its a classic.
Very much this! ^
Super very much
Facts.
He should just go through the whole Charlie Kaufman catalogue tbh.
Yessss
PTA may be my favourite director alive and this is my favourite from him. You should watch rest of his films too.
I like this brutally honest PTA quote. I don’t know if I agree, but it would be interesting to see his 2020 cut. :)
‘When asked if he would change anything about the film today, Paul Thomas Anderson said: “Oh, I’d slice that thing down. It’s way too long. It’s unmerciful, how long it is.”
Speaking of cuts - a shame the pharmacy scene with Julianne Moore didn’t make the RUclips cut. Some of the best film acting of the last 20-25 years. I’ll have to check out the full reaction on your Patreon one of these days. Thank you.
Has anyone recommended The Skin I Live In? I think you’d have fun watching and reacting to that one. It stars Antonio Banderas (one of his best performances)... that’s all the information needed if you haven’t seen it. :)
I wonder which scenes would PTA cut out if he got around to re-editing Magnolia.
You need to watch more of Paul Thomas Anderson’s films ASAP!
FUN FACT: It has actually rained frogs several times in recorded history. To my knowledge it happened in Minnesota sometime in the thirties or forties, also in Mexico more recently. Small lakes or ponds get sucked up by a violent storm in their entirety, evaporated, and REcondensed in the atmosphere, thus separating the solid matter (in this case frogs) and dispersing it somewhere else. So you see, this actually is JUST SOMETHING THAT HAPPENS. If you did this, you GOTTA do P.T. Anderson's breakout BOOGIE NIGHTS. I heard he spent the first thirty years of his life developing it in some form or another. Apples and oranges when it comes to the story but another great film with some knockout performances. His best film next to There Will Be Blood imo.
He made boogie nights at 27....
@@comfykeegs That makes sense. He is pretty next level. I'll be honest, even Hard 8 kind of rocked me a little. No one plays evil like Samuel L. Jackson for my money.
"Short Cuts
" by Robert Altman strongly influenced this film
"Nashville" has a slightly different style, with a considerable amount of satire, which Altman still uses many times in his films ("A Wedding", "Prêt-à-Porter" and others).
I consider this to be Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘thank you’ letter to Robert Altman (he was known for his ensemble drama films).
The camera work is due to the incredible collaboration of PTA and Robert Elswitt. Everything from the fast zooms to the slow panning almost has this angel like nuance, as if we were flying around, witnessing the lives of these characters.
I love Magnolia. Ensemble films such as this one are special and rare. The cast is solid on every level. The cinematography is brilliant. The soundtrack is soulful. The film's themes (regret, forgiveness, trauma, and loneliness) are universal and impactful.
The rain of fogs is one of the most surprising plot twists in cinema history. So completely out-there yet it fits within the story somehow. The opening teases it with the bizarre stories of coincidence.
The last image of Claudia's tearful smile always fills me with a hopeful joy.
I am a big fan of this movie and PTA himself. At 29, he was able to make a 3 hour drama about cancer, childhood trauma, and unique events that forever bond people. That's how much power and weight he had at such a young age! When they say films like X don't get made today, I think about films like this, where PTA was able to make his greatest attempt at an Robert Altman film. After this, he would mainly focus on character studies but this captures him where he was still wearing his influences on his sleeve.
I saw it about 30 or 40 times. Aimee Mann did most of the soundtrack. Look up "Save Me" and "Wise Up" to see her vids with direct help from the actors straight from the movie...
You should check out The Master. My favourite PT Anderson but possibly he’s least accessible. Would love to hear your thoughts on it.
@Randy White I said “accessible”, not polarising. All subjective tho.
AKA the story of L. Ron Hubbard and Scientology.
You should watch Robert Altman’s Short Cuts or Nashville if you like this style of storytelling
Magnolia can only be described by one single word: masterpiece
Love Ricky Jay’s narration. He was such a wonderful actor. You ought to react to David Mamet’s 2001 crime movie “Heist” with Gene Hackman, Sam Rockwell, Danny DeVito, and Ricky Jay. It’s an underrated classic that is growing in stature with time. Beautifully acted and the dialogue will stick with you for a while.
damn the energy of early PTA films is just so captivating, same goes with Boogie Nights, there's definitely some influence form Scorsese too with some of those shaky zoom in shots
Early PTA was like the offspring of Martin Scorsese and Robert Altman
Would love to see the film natural born killers on here. The movie has really interesting editing choices and shots you would love :))
This movie is such a masterpiece.
when John C Reilly’s missing gun comes back with the frogs is amazing.
The scene of the morning after Frank's father passed, with the sun shining through the windows... it's almost as if he's been cleansed in a way - he's freed himself from the hate that festered within him for years. As much as I disagree with Cruise's beliefs, I have to say he was incredible in this film.
I haven't watched this film in so long and I'd totally forgotten how good it was. Hard to believe there's this many characters in a film and the character development is still top level
Great reaction, man. Can't wait for you to react to all of Paul Thomas Anderson's films. You should react to Boogie Night next. It's a masterpiece. Favorite moment in Magnolia is easily when Phillip Seymour Hoffman calls to get a hold of Tom Cruise’s character and describes it how this the scene from the movie when the guy is trying to find his long lost son. Brilliant acting and filmmaking.
The writing in this film never ceases to amaze me. It juggles and interweaves so many stories separately and connectively, so seamlessly it's such a work of art.
- also Tom Cruise's performance in this movie is fuckin awesome
My favorite part of this is definitely the “this is the scene in the movie...” it’s kind of an obvious meta moment but it’s so powerful and really hits on that thing where sometimes you have these crazy emotional moments in life and it almost doesn’t feel like it could be real, but sometimes ... that really happens
Raining frogs and fish has supposedly happened throughout history randomly en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rain_of_animals
Oh god, spiders?! I hope that never happens ever again.
It would be absurd if a rain of a certain animal ever happened nearby my location.
Everything reaches a crisis point, and it's so disturbing, than no character can look beyond themself to realize thst the crisis is striking EVERYone else, exactly as hard.
If you watch some old classics that would be great. Please put some of those on upcoming patreon polls. My recommendations are Seven Samurai, Ran, Paths of Glory, Barry Lyndon, Rear Window, Vertigo and The Searchers. Modern Hollywood directors are heavily influenced from these movies.
I think James would be the first person on YT to react to Vertigo that would be LIT
you have witnessed a masterpiece, it's always great to see someone watching it for the first time, now you HAVE to watch Boogie Nights, PTA is a genius.
Boogie Nights, which PTA made before this film, is a long flowing story like this one, but more a lot more fun and less heavy. It's a really cool movie if you haven't seen it.
This makes me so happy. I can’t wait until Wednesday because Synecdoche, New York is one of my favorite films and Philip Seymour Hoffman is one of the greatest actors there is. So many good reaction.
One of my favorite movies. I remember seeing this for the first time when I worked at a videostore about a year after it came out on VHS! It was a double VHS set. The emotions in this film are so tragic, intense and beautiful. I don’t think Paul Thomas Anderson has done better films than this and Boogie Nights. I watch all his films hoping to be impressed and while the performances are always great, the movies just don’t live up to these two.
P.S. that role was written with Tom Cruise in mind!
The two things that I love the most are:
The score, with it's apocalptical tone, making everything sound intense and building up for something really big.
The pacing. I mean, you can't even get tired by any one of the storylines, he is already switching to the next one in a really high point, then another, and then he comes back. And the connections between each storyline are so sweet.
I also love the performances, specially Julianne Moore, Tom Cruise and Phillip Seymour Hoffmann, his performances are so natural and organic.
The scene between Hoffman and Moore is so good. He's getting emotional off her emotions, and then a few seconds after she walks off he just shakes his head a little and looks like "WTF, why am *I* crying?"
Never cared for Tom Cruise’s acting, and still don’t.....I mean, he’s fine.....but he is always sort of the same character in every movie. Here though? Off the charts. Amazing.
I felt so weird for liking this movie so much. It was at the $3 theater on campus for a week, and I think I saw it three times.....maybe 5 or 6 other people in the theater.
PTA can be great. IMO, this and Boogie Nights are his best work. I know he feels like those two movies would he better now, as he is a more mature and experienced filmmaker......but I dunno? The impact emotionally from those two movies are phenomenal. Maybe because I was younger when I saw them?
Those to are great and magnolia is my favourite hut his films just get stronger and stronger. Phantom thread is a masterpiece.
@Randy White What would you consider to be PTA's best?
@Dean Bennington sorry, besides “Eyes Wide Shut” and “Magnolia” he plays basically the same, uninteresting hero character, who starts shouting all the time because he is incapable of acting with emotion in any other way. He’s not a bad actor, just not that great IMO. Know what I’m talking about. Bruh, I’m guessing if you google “Tom Cruise always plays the same character”, you’ll see a bunch of articles and discussions about that very thing.
Man you should watch Punch-Drunk Love with Adam Sandler, it´s from Paul Thomas Anderson too and i think it is hella underrated
I am no fan of Scientology, but even I think that Tom Cruise was robbed twice at the Oscars, for best actor in Born On The Fourth Of July and best supporting actor for Magnolia.
@Dean Bennington The scene with his faher in Born On The Fourth Of july where he is asking 'who is going to love me?' is heart-wrenching. In that movie at first he portrays innocence, then confusion, mental breakdown, guilt, addiction, redemption, courage, etc. He goes through the whole gamut of emotions and everything is entirely believable. It is a tour de force of acting. Never understood why this performance is so often underestimated. Just my opinion.
@Dean Bennington Well we will have to agree to disagree on that one, as I thought that in My Left Foot, the main character was one note, he did not have to go through all the emotions that Ron Kovic did in Born On The 4th Of July.
The actress playing the woman with the coke habit also played George Costanza's girlfriend in an episode of Seinfeld, it's the one where they all go to the Hamptons and to George's dismay his gf sunbathes topless while he's away buying tomatoes. It's also the one where George is the victim of significant "shrinkage" after swimming in the pool. xD
@Randy White I've tried to find one, but all the clips I get on YT just show her from behind :p You see her face a lot in the episode, apparently it's S05E21 :) Good luck :p

I've seen adults not letting kids go,til they do pee their pants . sadly this is causes further social problems .kids ( being over 10 I mean).
One of my favourite movies of all time. I saw it on the cinema when it first came out and was completely blown away. Nice reaction and commentary.
Bro how come you're a filmmaker and you haven't seen all these movies?? Not hating, just asking
This is a movie your can't forget, from the acting, writing, camera work, editing, soundtrack, emotional impact... It's a real work of art. Crying, laughing, longing... All emotions this movie brings out, I always liked Tom cruise before this but after this it elevates him higher as a top actor not just action star..
The DVD had a bonus disc with a documentary about the making of the film. P.T. Anderson said he borrowed a friend's cabin, and the first day he walked onto the porch and there was a snake on the porch and he went back inside and was afraid to step out for two weeks and he wrote the screenplay during that time.
This is my favorite film of all time.
this is quite literally the greatest film ever made
The number 82 appears MULTIPLE times in the film. References Exodus 8:2....the plague of the frogs in Egupt.
82 is written on the ledge where the kid falls and is shot, on the plane, the forensics meeting held at 8:20, the prisoner mug shot, 82% humidity, the voice mailbox # of Jim the cop. Even in the studio of the gameshow, an audience member holds up a sign that says EXODUS 8:2 before being taken away by an usher (who is played by the director PT Anderson).
YAY Miriam Margolyes. What a legend!
This is Tom Cruises greatest performance in all of his movie career.
Watch “Blade Runner” from 1982 starring Harrison Ford. It’s the film that started futuristic noir. Make sure to watch the Final Cut version. The special effects and set design helped inspire the cyberpunk movement.

I'm probably on the wrong video but, have you seen Dog Soldiers before? Reckon you'd enjoy that!
Heck yes = my reaction before even watching. Hope Boogie Nights comes soon!
This is my favorite film. All of the performances are every kind of beautiful. I'm so glad you reacted to it!
Changed my life, showcasing just how unable we are to control how our past grips us - and how the random inter-weavings of other people’s lives can affect us - but that we have no choice but to try to rise above it anyway. Chaos is inevitable.
What’s really crazy is how I can relate to the restaurant scene and Donnie’s last line in a way that I couldn’t 20yrs ago - meeting girls whose soul/pain I could see and understand so clearly but they couldn’t let me in because their trauma wouldn’t let them (i.e., the shame they had about their past despite it not being their fault)...yet wishing they could see how much I understood maybe better than just about anybody..
17:31 Interesting you picked up on that. In a 'making of' documentary, Paul Thomas Anderson was talking with someone about a producer asking Paul if there were like 8 or 9 stories in the movie. Anderson said "I'm trying to tell ONE story."
I just fall more and more in love with your channel sir. 😊 So happy each time I see a new upload! 🌻 Not sure if you even take requests from the comments but I'd like to suggest, White Oleander, Thirteen or The Lovely Bones. ✌🏽
It's a top film. It's got an almost relentless intensity, speed and energy, scene after scene. Crazy performances. The ending, look to camera and that slight smile gets me every time.
This movie threw me into an existential crisis the first time I watched it lol.

Bruh, it's good to see someone actually do a reaction to this flick. My favorite PTA film by far is Hard Eight. This was his first film and stars Phillip Baker Hall, Paul C Reilly, Gwyneth Paltrow and Samuel Motherfukin Jackson. A truly AMAZING piece of cinema, but I hardly ever see or hear anyone mention it when talking about Paul Thomas Anderson's career.
Hard Eight was a fantastic debut for a fantastic filmmaker
Wish we could’ve seen a 4 hour movie just about Tom Cruises character.. instead of just 27 mins .. imagine if DDL only had 27 mins in TWBB
Hey man great reaction! I just noticed as of now, your the only film reaction channel on RUclips to do Magnolia. I hope more people react to it. I just watch this film not so long ago for the first time and this film is now my favorite Paul Thomas Anderson film of all time. (That title previously went to Boogie Nights, which I also love.) I have never seen a film that effecting me so emotionally and mind-blowing before. The editing, score, music, visuals, camerawork, cinematography, acting, and stories are phenomenal. The frog rain sequence was so out of the blue it brought such a unexplained biblical divine intervention type of chances and coincidences, which ties back to the opening prologue. The film is amazing and I love it!!!!! 10/10 I’m looking forward to PTA’s new film, Licorice Pizza which as a similar vibe of mostly Boogie Nights and a little bit of Magnolia. Keep up the great work man!!! 👍🏻❤️❤️❤️
PT Anderson’s most personal film, although most of his work deals with the theme of fatherhood in some regard.
I'd argue that Punch-Drunk Love is PTA's most personal.
@@ayubnor0 what’s the argument? PTA himself said Magnolia was his most personal. Plus the story has elements that mirror his own story. The themes of fatherhood, hollywood, child prodigy are all pulled from his personal experience.
Such an upsetting movie
Fun fact: 877-TAME HER was an actual working number -- it plays a recording of Frank T.J. Mackey's (Tom Cruise) "Seduce and Destroy" pitch. (And that the mailbox was full.)
You definitely should react to THE MASTER - absolute masterpiece from PTA - Magnolia is a brilliant and beautiful movie and my favourite Tom Cruise Performance, when he breaks down to his father, so many emotions are at display, it’s phenomenal acting.
This movie owes everything to the movie Short Cuts.
You have just stumbled onto one of the best movie experiences I have ever had. This movie is a masterpiece. It was my #1 film for many years. It is now #2 to Shaun Of The Dead. I’ve only seen it once but I feel like so many scenes have impacted me and I never forgot. Incredible filmmaker, incredible cast, incredible story. Its criminally unknown.
For me, Tom Cruises best acting.
A masterpiece. Sad that PTA negates his own genius with this film. Maybe he's afraid he'll never nail another movie like this again. Why should he? It's sublime. Perfect, original, tantric, poignant, exhilarating. Beautiful
This is an incredibly good reaction. Looking forward to watching more of your videos.
This is one of my favourite movies. Just like Cloud Atlas the expert editing meshes multiple stories into one whole emotional journey that has to be watched in one sitting.
The Song playing at the beginning of the film was called " One " that was written & recorded originally by Harry Nilsson. The version in the movie is by Aimee Mann.
Gosh I havent watched this movie in 20 years, thanks for letting me rewatch it with you!
One of my all time favorites! Thoroughly enjoy your reviews and analysis - keep up the great work!
I am obsessed with this movie.
It’s almost hypnotic how the soundtrack and the editing movies you through the characters, the emotions and scenes.
My favorite movie of all time and it’s not close.
That is one of my all time favorite films, and now you know why. It is an actors and filmmakers treat. The whole cast just kills it.
