As a child who grew up in hunting culture, I was always taught the man was a poacher rather than a normal hunter. It was explained to me that's why his hunting dogs were always so mean, unlike the hunting dogs that I grew up with. He hunted the animals not caring whether or not they had children, and at all times of the year even out of season. It could be just because my family was so familiar with hunting, but I was taught the importance of proper hunting techniques and respecting the forest around me via this movie.
I agree, now that doesn't mean the scene itself isn't depressing but I always felt like the hunter was more of a poacher seeing how he aimlessly kept killing for game. My family hunts but we don't use dogs simply because that isn't fair to the wildlife. Not saying people shouldn't be allowed to used dogs I just personally agree with it because for us good hunting is mainly about fair game. So the use of dogs cancels that and is in my opinion, a bit of an unfair advantage. I'm not saying people shouldn't be allowed to used dogs because I do see the importance of them being used for game such as bears and wild boars. My father even owns a plott/ red tick hound mix that is mainly used to keep predators off our property. So as far as Bambi goes. I think you and I can both agree how the hunter is viewed is dependent on the viewers background cause those who aren't really involved with hunting let alone spend much time outdoors would very easily use it as a image that all hunters are cruel and greedy.
Yeah, I’m pretty sure killing a Doe during the time of year when she might have fawns is pretty much illegal everywhere (in the US at least). He’s definitely committing a crime here.
Bambi’s mom was traumatizing, but the scene where the quails are sitting in the grass watching man get closer before one panics, flies up and promptly gets shot down. You see the body fall there.

I think an important distinction between the good and evil hunters in the Bambi series that was overlooked when looking at the movie, is that most hunters purposefully ignore the doe in real life, even if there are no laws against killing them. Thus, when the hunter in the Bambi movie kills Bambi's mother, he crosses the line from merely an antagonist to a villain for the viewers, even if few think of that as a reason to hate him
In my opinion, the third time Man shows up, causing the forest fire, they do seem much more like thugs rather than hunters, shooting at small game like rabbits and chipmunks that would be of little to no value to most hunters, making no real effort to collect their kills, and, of course, neglecting to properly care for their campfire.

That being said to manage deer populations it must be remembered it takes only 1 stag to impregnate multiple does so doe culling is also needed not just stags. Plus the flesh of a doe is not as gamey as a stag's is due to his testosterone. Before the rut all the does have weaned their fawns and those fawns are no longer cute spot coated babies as they're nearly the size of their dams. The rut is the time when deer hunting usually takes place and both sexes are taken.
Also, after the rut there will usually be a mortality rate among the stags because they spent their fat reserves in the pursuit of does, fighting off other stags and then mating when the doe comes into full estrus. A doe's receptivity for a stag's advances is very short, not even a full day. After being bred that's it and the stag is off looking for another. By the time the rut is complete the stag is hard pressed to find adequate food since the growing season for it is long gone. By the time spring returns many stags will not have survived the winter. Yes, he may have passed on his genes, but it cost him his life to do so.
I'm absolutely convinced Bambi is one of the strongest influences on Spielberg's 'Jaws.' The way you never see the Hunter, you just see his viewpoint as the camera moves in - look familiar to you? Hell, even the music sounds vaguely similar.
possibly an influence in decision making but I know the main reason was because the shark prop just didn't look that great and exposure for too long would have ruined it for the audience, and monsters in horror are best shown sparingly so as to retain their mystique, even if it's something as simple as a shark or *man*

The idea of showing a dead hunter after the fire was nixed when the film was shown to a test audience with this segment. The collective gasp from that audience was enough for Disney to have it deleted.

Man in Bambi is a villain the way that a volcano or a hurricane is. It's such a poetic way to put it from the perspective of the animals. Man is a force of nature, unstoppable and impossible to really understand. All they can really do is flee and hope.
Walt being "man" and his staff being the "forest animals" does really shed light to the power structure and respect everyone has for Walt Disney at the time.

I always got the impression that the Ringmaster was kind of too clueless to be a villain. I think Bambi makes more sense when you consider that Walt was really into making nature films at this time. Trying to walk the line between naturalistic and anthropomorphized characters is hard. I lived in rural Maine for many years, there's still a lot of families that rely on hunting for food. The hunter is a villain because he illegally killed a doe, not because hunting itself is wrong.

Many can handle alcohol perfectly well and have no problems with keeping it in moderation. Others meanwhile, such as my grandfather, couldn't. Also in the very slim chance of Bambi ever getting his world playable in a future Kingdom Hearts game, grown up stag Bambi and Sora (in deer form) could fight against heartless clones of man the hunter as the final bosses for Bambi's world, as well as stag Ronno as a mini boss (who could redeem himself before leaving the forest after his defeat), lastly after the defeat of the final bosses, Sora and Bambi have to follow the Great Prince to escape the forest fire which would look incredible in 3D in my opinion.

And the clowns are equally as tormenting, not caring About the animals, However, I feel like the ring master could be the main antagonist on a different scale. He is not the most abusive towards Dumbo. However, he is evil in a different way psychologically by taking Allowing everything to happen to Dumbo without giving a thought. I mean, we could say he was oblivious to it, but I doubt he would care either way and he also took. Dumbo's mother away from him and put her in chains possibly. My grandad is a hunter and as a kid i knew that, but i was never upset with him after seeing Bambie. I was taught that there were good hunters and bad hunters, the hunter in Bambie was bad cause he shot Bambie's Mom a Doe, and good hunters as i was raised to see didnt shoot female Deer.
Nya, I guess it depends on the education you received. I don't live far from rural areas but all the people I knew who visited the forest regularly were mushroom pickers, photographers, campers and ornithologists. The hunters of whom I was aware, in addition to killing wild animals, killed their own dogs when they were old and caused many problems for other types of visitors to the forest, sometimes shooting indiscriminately and wounding and killing people. It may be different where you live, but in my part of the world, hunters are not friendly people, they are people you should stay away from. Besides that, since I was little I have always seen people who hurt animals as bad people. Even before I was a vegetarian I was aware that I was causing a lot of suffering, even though I wouldn't be able to consciously kill anyone if I had to. On the other hand I suppose that you will consider anyone who enjoys a show in which animals are tortured to death as mentally deranged, but there are still people in my country who believe that bullfighters are heroes (disgusting, I know. Fortunately. we're likely to ban that shortly)
The kid is definitely a jerk/bully and a catalyst for the conflict. But not quite villainous. He’s a dumb kid and product of the times, who learned the hard way you don’t mess with animals. Maybe if he showed up again and continued to harass Dumbo. For sure.
You know as a young child I read a golden book of Dumbo where there was no Timothy mouse! Instead the way Dumbo got out of trouble when he messed up the performance was out of the kindness of the ring masters own heart. Just something to think about.

The Bambi section of this video is truly fantastic! Your analysis of Man is quite interesting. I remember seeing this movie as a kid and yes it was hard for me to see the mom die! That is a very deep and sad moment. You do a wonderful job with your retrospectives. I like the Dumbo section a lot too and I will always have a soft spot in my heart for that movie as well.
Bambi was among the most-watched VHS tapes in my house when I was a kid (yes, I'm dating myself big time now). My sister and I watched it to the point where we broke it from overuse. In my case, the big selling point was the Great Prince. Even as a very young child, I was in awe of him. His majestic design and the fact his antlers literally form a crown made me adore the character. Now, I have both the original and Bambi 2 on DVD. Bambi 2 is among my favorite Disney sequels, again because of the Great Prince. Being voiced by Patrick Steward certainly helped. Now, I will admit that I was either too young or too oblivious to be traumatized or even feel anything when Bambi's mother died. Likely a bit of both. Now that I'm much older, I still don't feel all that sad. Probably because hunting is a necessary evil because we pushed the predators out and it's vital for ecosystem health. Letting prey populations explode is the fastest way to kill the ecosystem. I never saw Man as a bad guy in Bambi because he went unseen. I still don't to this day but for a different reason. For all we know, Man was a licensed hunter who kept to the quota and his only egregious screw-up was shooting a doe. To my limited understanding, does are generally off-limits and are only shot during sanctioned culls.
Fully thinking about that the sequel has man useing a deer call is so fucked up, like they are pretty much eldrich gods at this point. Now they figured out that they can mimic them. That to me makes it much darker

I like the decision to not show the hunters, it dehumanises them and makes them more scary, considering it is a tale told from the deer’s perspective it makes sense that Man would be seen more as a force of evil rather than a character.
I know every kid experiences a fear of the dark at some point or another, but surprisingly, my early childhood fear of the dark actually began with the Pink Elephant scene from Dumbo (1941). I know that sounds odd, but when you have a song that occurs at night in the movie, against a pitch-black backdrop, and the voices sing, "Look out! Look out! They're walking around the bed, on their head" and it doesn't end until dawn in the movie, it really does give you a sense of "What'll I do? What'll I do?" in response to the nightmare fuel from that scene.
The hunter in Bambi acts more like a poacher than an actual respectable hunter. Most hunters ignore the doe, especially during the time when they have fawns. I think the poacher is McLeach himself (Rescuers Down Under), who later moved to Australia to poach some more there as well. I am surprised he isn't included in the Disney Villain category along with The Coachman... I guess they're too close to being real life personas scares The Disney Company. They prefer comical villains like Hook and Hades.
Weirdly.... I dunno why, but the animal control officer without any colors and just in the shadows like that reminds me less of a character from Dumbo and more of Ralph the Security Guard from Animaniacs.
Heres a fun story from a hunters daughter. I saw bambi and i cried for a while and when my dad came home from work after i saw it i cried to him begging him not to kill bambis mom. He had to reassure me and seeing how i didnt understand it was fiction at the time he promised that hed never kill a doe when he hunted and only hunted buck when and only in season. Up until his death he kept that promise even when i told him when i was older he could and he just said nah.
I know you say you don't consider predatory animals as villains, but I find it interesting that the Wolf from Peter and the Wolf appeared again in other shorts and shows (same design and mannerisms). I wouldn't mind a video that puts all that together, even if it was likely to save budget! To my memory, that wolf also appears in Lambert the Sheepish Lion, House of Mouse, and in some games and background references.
You forgot to mention, in talking about the Ringmaster in the Disney parks, that he is also heard (though not seen) providing the safety spiel and other bits of commentary for the Casey Junior ride at Disneyland, once again with no hint of being evil. Incidentally, he's voiced by Ray Templin, who also voices both Stromboli and the Coachman at the Pinocchio ride nearby.
Interesting fact about the book Bambi. It was once banned during Nazi German due to how people could view the symbolism in the book for the mistreatment of the Jews and the original copies were burned. Now if you happen to find an actual original copy of Bambi a life in the woods, it is worth a fortune.

i absolutely LOVE Bambi for how it views humanity from the animals' point of view. Man is terrifying, an unseen, uncaring force that kills with incomprehensible means and no regard for life, a power from outside their world that can even corrupt other animals (the dogs). Man is an intruder that has full power, and anyone can be next. i love horror and this definitely has a horror angle to it. i definitely don't think the hunter should be seen as such and rather it's a standin for humanity as a whole, cause at this point, anything we do harms the natural world because of our lifestyles.

I’ve seen a lot of people hate on the original Bambi movie because they say it wasn’t dark enough or didn’t express the messages that were expressed in the book such as life not mattering, man being omnipresent, circle of life and making the movie too life-loving. I can understand it but when I watch the movie I still see the messages being put on the table like Bambi’s moms death representing how life can take a twist and loss of innocence and the man still has an omnipresent feel due to never seeing him in the movie itself
I got to say, this was very well thought of. I actually run an adventure team in the spoofing community under the name of my favorite character, as you can see. I got to admit that I do in fact totally understand the points that you make about the ringmaster. At first, we was one of the bad guys for the team I made up, but the only reason I did that was because I thought "Dumbo" wasn't getting any attention then. Even though I didn't really think he was a bad guy, I still treated him as a villain and would often have him play the henchmen to villains in previous projects I did anyway, so that the film could have some recognition. That was the case until the remake came out two years ago. When that came out, I decided to follow the continuities of that film and have him known as Max Medici like in the remake, have him be one of the good guys, and now V.A. Vandervere has taken over his villainous role in the projects I do. In fact, that's why I bring this up. In your point about "Disney Villains' Revenge", I agree he feels out of place. That's why in the current project I'm doing that revolves around that game, I changed it so that now Vandervere is the fourth villain of the game along with all the others still in it. That was the film can still be seen, but instead have an actual villain of that franchise appear in there instead.
I bet Disney decided to take inspiration from how he had been depicted both ways and basically splits his character in two by having them be brothers. His good side being the good ringmaster and his evil said becoming the evil businessman.
The hunters should be considered poachers which should always differ from guenine hunters.They were hunting in the winter and again does with fawns are considered off limits. Also again irresponsible with fire saftey.

But hunting deer generally requires a permit--and by extension, that generally means that a single hunter is only allowed to take a single deer a year--and is only allowed within certain seasons. There's even restrictions on which firearms you may use--some parts of the seasons are limited to bow hunting. I've never heard of deer hunting being allowed in winter months.

Owls, on an average dont hunt rabbits, skunks and deers though. They mostly hunt rodents, so it would be fairly natural that the main characters could interact with Owl without fear. He is also one of the residents of the forest so the animals understand what he is and how he hunt. Its kinda funny but predator and prey can exist close to eachother without issues, well untill predator gets hungry. Man is not a resident of the forest. To the animals, man is like what a demon is to us. Surreal and unnatural.
As a kid I always considered the snobby old lady elephant who ostracizes Dumbo for his ears and then for becoming a clown to be a bigger villain, or one of the Pink Elephants just cause...urgghh. That one that's just made of heads scared me as a kid based on looks alone
I owned the DVR game, and I was genuinely confused about the Ringmaster being antagonistic. I barely remembered the character, but even as I kid I knew that he wasn't absolutely malicious.
In a Little Golden Book adaptation by Teddy Slater, there is a scene where the Ringmaster is furious at Dumbo for ruining the pyramid act that he threatens to send the little elephant to a zoo until the Ringmaster calmed down and decided to make Dumbo a clown instead since he looks funny.
Fun fact: Felix Salten, author of Bambi, is also most likely the author of the uncredited "Josephine Mutzenbacher". The latter book is, no joke, an erotic book detailing the sexual exploits of a little Viennese girl. The book begins when she's 5 and ends with her officially becoming a brothel prostitute at 13. Unlike Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita, Salten's Josephine is played 100% straight, chiefly for titillation. Lolita was a subversion, and Nabokov himself was amused by readers who complained that Lolita was too dry/not steamy enough. It should be noted that the original book "Bambi" is NOT children's literature. The scene where Gobo is shot is described in gory detail ("bloody entrails oozing from his flank"). Salten was absolutely not a children's author, and I find the idea of people thinking he was due to the Disney film absolutely hilarious. Also, now I'm just imaging the bizarre alternate universe where Josephine was the Salten novel chosen for adaptation by Disney. Y'all think Bambi was heavily altered from the source material? Ain't seen nothin' yet...
I loved the wolf in Peter and the wolf and made me obsess over the story in general. The wolf to me was my nightmare and childhood as basically the night terrors showed me how the dream world works in a way. I’ve actually own the mini movie and often would have an obsession with stories that had wolfs as the antagonists and anything to do with scares
That Dumbo sequel sounds like it might have been a fun time- maybe nothing stellar, but the plot sounds like it could have provided some good moments and it had potential to be one of the decent Disney DTV sequels if they played their cards right.
Bambi is more understanding than the cartoon . In the book man isn’t evil in the book he’s a misunderstood figure. He only hunts for food to help his family and maybe for himself too . The hunting dogs are just dogs . But after the hunter accidentally shots himself Bambi and his father finally understand man isn’t evil hes just a misunderstood figure. The hunting dog fighting the fox is one of most disturbing pages I ever read . The animals in forest tuant the dog but he tells them no no no I love him and he loves me . So, next episode we'll discover "The Three Caballeros" film has no antagonist at all, but its awesome spinoff action-adventure show "Legend of the Three Caballeros" has 2 awesome main villains (Lord Felldrake Sheldgoose and his descendant Baron Sheldgoose), and lots of great episodic villains like the queen lava-lizard, the Yokai, the dragon, the goblins and the giant termites for Donald and friends to fight against.
That one random ass hunter probably traumatized more children than any other Disney villain, bar perhaps only the headless horseman, and we never even see him.

I don't consider man from bambi a villain, he was simply hunting and considering the implied time period and season in the scene most likely was just feeding his family. If you want a truly evil but not generic version of him, look no further then the hunter from babar, in the first episode or so he shown stalking Barbara elephant pack and kills his mother, but babar breaks his gun and instead of taking revenge spares the hunter , showing the mercy the hunter didn't, its not until the storyline where babar returns to the jungle to teach them about the modern world that the hunter returns with a troop of men to hunt down the rest of the jungle and it is heavily implied hes going after babar out of spite, he later causes an oil fire to burn the animals alive but the animals work together to put it out...the fire backfired and while his men escaped the flames, his hatred was so grand that he refused to leave the flames till he got his prey , ending his life and leaving a wasteland where his camp once stood. Also I'd like to add the troop master motivation in villains revenge made no sense...the man benefited greatly from dumboo learning to fly as shown at the end of the movie ...so why would he want that to change?
So wait, there was an actual sequel novel to Bambi, one that was about his children (which is similar to many Disney Sequels), but when it came time to make a sequel they had it be a midquel? What the hell Disney?

I always felt that man probably wasn't a hunter as much as he was a poacher. Of course as a child I felt that killing any animal for fun was just strait evil (and I still do tbh) but I think that's qualifies man as directly evil. He's not just hunting for food or ever for sport. He's targetting a doe and her baby. Then later in the film he shoots a shotgun at a rabbit, at mice, at tiny birds. He's not hunting, he's just killing everything in his path, letting his dogs loose to rip apart anything he can find, them through they own negligence sets fire to the woods, no doubt killing countless animals. That shit is evil. Hunting for food and (even though I think they're pathetic cowards) sport is one thing. This is just a massicre.
I think man from Bambi is more of a antagonist force then a villan since he’s technically not a character because we know absolutely nothing them we don’t see them, know there personality there portrayed more like a natural disaster then a character but thats just me

As a child who grew up in hunting culture, I was always taught the man was a poacher rather than a normal hunter. It was explained to me that's why his hunting dogs were always so mean, unlike the hunting dogs that I grew up with. He hunted the animals not caring whether or not they had children, and at all times of the year even out of season. It could be just because my family was so familiar with hunting, but I was taught the importance of proper hunting techniques and respecting the forest around me via this movie.
I agree, now that doesn't mean the scene itself isn't depressing but I always felt like the hunter was more of a poacher seeing how he aimlessly kept killing for game. My family hunts but we don't use dogs simply because that isn't fair to the wildlife. Not saying people shouldn't be allowed to used dogs I just personally agree with it because for us good hunting is mainly about fair game. So the use of dogs cancels that and is in my opinion, a bit of an unfair advantage. I'm not saying people shouldn't be allowed to used dogs because I do see the importance of them being used for game such as bears and wild boars. My father even owns a plott/ red tick hound mix that is mainly used to keep predators off our property. So as far as Bambi goes. I think you and I can both agree how the hunter is viewed is dependent on the viewers background cause those who aren't really involved with hunting let alone spend much time outdoors would very easily use it as a image that all hunters are cruel and greedy.

Actually, it's a pheasant because quails don't endure long-distance flights and spend a lot of their time on the ground.
That whole sequence is just perfect tension raising, we the audience either feel like the panicking pheasant or the ones that are saying calm.
I thought of that scene last year, even asking one of my brothers and my Mom separately: "Hmmm. . . They don't want to show the dead body of Bambi's mother because they don't want to traumatize young viewers, but they're ACTUALLY willing to show the quail's dead body?"
I think an important distinction between the good and evil hunters in the Bambi series that was overlooked when looking at the movie, is that most hunters purposefully ignore the doe in real life, even if there are no laws against killing them. Thus, when the hunter in the Bambi movie kills Bambi's mother, he crosses the line from merely an antagonist to a villain for the viewers, even if few think of that as a reason to hate him
In my opinion, the third time Man shows up, causing the forest fire, they do seem much more like thugs rather than hunters, shooting at small game like rabbits and chipmunks that would be of little to no value to most hunters, making no real effort to collect their kills, and, of course, neglecting to properly care for their campfire.

For the most part does usually are. A stag head is more impressive hanging on the wall. That being said to manage deer populations it must be remembered it takes only 1 stag to impregnate multiple does so doe culling is also needed not just stags. Plus the flesh of a doe is not as gamey as a stag's is due to his testosterone.
Before the rut all the does have weaned their fawns and those fawns are no longer cute spot coated babies as they're nearly the size of their dams. The rut is the time when deer hunting usually takes place and both sexes are taken.
Also, after the rut there will usually be a mortality rate among the stags because they spent their fat reserves in the pursuit of does, fighting off other stags and then mating when the doe comes into full estrus. A
doe's receptivity for a stag's advances is very short, not even a full day. After being bred that's it and the stag is off looking for another. By the time the rut is complete the stag is hard pressed to find adequate food since the growing season for it is long gone. By the time spring returns many stags will not have survived the winter. Yes, he may have passed on his genes, but it cost him his life to do so.

John Williams actually credited Bambi’s theme for Man as a direct inspiration for his Jaws theme.
Man in Bambi is a villain the way that a volcano or a hurricane is. It's such a poetic way to put it from the perspective of the animals. Man is a force of nature, unstoppable and impossible to really understand. All they can really do is flee and hope.
Walt being "man" and his staff being the "forest animals" does really shed light to the power structure and respect everyone has for Walt Disney at the time.

I always got the impression that the Ringmaster was kind of too clueless to be a villain.
I think Bambi makes more sense when you consider that Walt was really into making nature films at this time. Trying to walk the line between naturalistic and anthropomorphized characters is hard. I lived in rural Maine for many years, there's still a lot of families that rely on hunting for food. The hunter is a villain because he illegally killed a doe, not because hunting itself is wrong.

And the clowns are equally as tormenting, not caring About the animals, However, I feel like the ring master could be the main antagonist on a different scale. He is not the most abusive towards Dumbo. However, he is evil in a different way psychologically by taking Allowing everything to happen to Dumbo without giving a thought. I mean, we could say he was oblivious to it, but I doubt he would care either way and he also took.

My grandad is a hunter and as a kid i knew that, but i was never upset with him after seeing Bambie. I was taught that there were good hunters and bad hunters, the hunter in Bambie was bad cause he shot Bambie's Mom a Doe, and good hunters as i was raised to see didnt shoot female Deer.
Nya, I guess it depends on the education you received. I don't live far from rural areas but all the people I knew who visited the forest regularly were mushroom pickers, photographers, campers and ornithologists. The hunters of whom I was aware, in addition to killing wild animals, killed their own dogs when they were old and caused many problems for other types of visitors to the forest, sometimes shooting indiscriminately and wounding and killing people. It may be different where you live, but in my part of the world, hunters are not friendly people, they are people you should stay away from.
Besides that, since I was little I have always seen people who hurt animals as bad people. Even before I was a vegetarian I was aware that I was causing a lot of suffering, even though I wouldn't be able to consciously kill anyone if I had to. On the other hand I suppose that you will consider anyone who enjoys a show in which animals are tortured to death as mentally deranged, but there are still people in my country who believe that bullfighters are heroes (disgusting, I know. Fortunately. we're likely to ban that shortly)

The Bambi section of this video is truly fantastic! Your analysis of Man is quite interesting. I remember seeing this movie as a kid and yes it was hard for me to see the mom die! That is a very deep and sad moment. You do a wonderful job with your retrospectives. I like the Dumbo section a lot too and I will always have a soft spot in my heart for that movie as well.
Bambi was among the most-watched VHS tapes in my house when I was a kid (yes, I'm dating myself big time now). My sister and I watched it to the point where we broke it from overuse. In my case, the big selling point was the Great Prince. Even as a very young child, I was in awe of him. His majestic design and the fact his antlers literally form a crown made me adore the character. Now, I have both the original and Bambi 2 on DVD. Bambi 2 is among my favorite Disney sequels, again because of the Great Prince. Being voiced by Patrick Steward certainly helped.
Now, I will admit that I was either too young or too oblivious to be traumatized or even feel anything when Bambi's mother died. Likely a bit of both. Now that I'm much older, I still don't feel all that sad. Probably because hunting is a necessary evil because we pushed the predators out and it's vital for ecosystem health. Letting prey populations explode is the fastest way to kill the ecosystem.
I never saw Man as a bad guy in Bambi because he went unseen. I still don't to this day but for a different reason. For all we know, Man was a licensed hunter who kept to the quota and his only egregious screw-up was shooting a doe. To my limited understanding, does are generally off-limits and are only shot during sanctioned culls.
Fully thinking about that the sequel has man useing a deer call is so fucked up, like they are pretty much eldrich gods at this point. Now they figured out that they can mimic them. That to me makes it much darker

I like the decision to not show the hunters, it dehumanises them and makes them more scary, considering it is a tale told from the deer’s perspective it makes sense that Man would be seen more as a force of evil rather than a character.

I know every kid experiences a fear of the dark at some point or another, but surprisingly, my early childhood fear of the dark actually began with the Pink Elephant scene from Dumbo (1941). I know that sounds odd, but when you have a song that occurs at night in the movie, against a pitch-black backdrop, and the voices sing, "Look out! Look out! They're walking around the bed, on their head" and it doesn't end until dawn in the movie, it really does give you a sense of "What'll I do? What'll I do?" in response to the nightmare fuel from that scene.

The hunter in Bambi acts more like a poacher than an actual respectable hunter. Most hunters ignore the doe, especially during the time when they have fawns. I think the poacher is McLeach himself (Rescuers Down Under), who later moved to Australia to poach some more there as well. I am surprised he isn't included in the Disney Villain category along with The Coachman... I guess they're too close to being real life personas scares The Disney Company. They prefer comical villains like Hook and Hades.

Heres a fun story from a hunters daughter. I saw bambi and i cried for a while and when my dad came home from work after i saw it i cried to him begging him not to kill bambis mom. He had to reassure me and seeing how i didnt understand it was fiction at the time he promised that hed never kill a doe when he hunted and only hunted buck when and only in season. Up until his death he kept that promise even when i told him when i was older he could and he just said nah.
I know you say you don't consider predatory animals as villains, but I find it interesting that the Wolf from Peter and the Wolf appeared again in other shorts and shows (same design and mannerisms). I wouldn't mind a video that puts all that together, even if it was likely to save budget! To my memory, that wolf also appears in Lambert the Sheepish Lion, House of Mouse, and in some games and background references.

i absolutely LOVE Bambi for how it views humanity from the animals' point of view. Man is terrifying, an unseen, uncaring force that kills with incomprehensible means and no regard for life, a power from outside their world that can even corrupt other animals (the dogs). Man is an intruder that has full power, and anyone can be next. i love horror and this definitely has a horror angle to it.
i definitely don't think the hunter should be seen as such and rather it's a standin for humanity as a whole, cause at this point, anything we do harms the natural world because of our lifestyles.

I’ve seen a lot of people hate on the original Bambi movie because they say it wasn’t dark enough or didn’t express the messages that were expressed in the book such as life not mattering, man being omnipresent, circle of life and making the movie too life-loving. I can understand it but when I watch the movie I still see the messages being put on the table like Bambi’s moms death representing how life can take a twist and loss of innocence and the man still has an omnipresent feel due to never seeing him in the movie itself

I got to say, this was very well thought of. I actually run an adventure team in the spoofing community under the name of my favorite character, as you can see. I got to admit that I do in fact totally understand the points that you make about the ringmaster. At first, we was one of the bad guys for the team I made up, but the only reason I did that was because I thought "Dumbo" wasn't getting any attention then. Even though I didn't really think he was a bad guy, I still treated him as a villain and would often have him play the henchmen to villains in previous projects I did anyway, so that the film could have some recognition. That was the case until the remake came out two years ago. When that came out, I decided to follow the continuities of that film and have him known as Max Medici like in the remake, have him be one of the good guys, and now V.A. Vandervere has taken over his villainous role in the projects I do. In fact, that's why I bring this up. In your point about "Disney Villains' Revenge", I agree he feels out of place. That's why in the current project I'm doing that revolves around that game, I changed it so that now Vandervere is the fourth villain of the game along with all the others still in it. That was the film can still be seen, but instead have an actual villain of that franchise appear in there instead.
I bet Disney decided to take inspiration from how he had been depicted both ways and basically splits his character in two by having them be brothers. His good side being the good ringmaster and his evil said becoming the evil businessman.

There are different rules for different municipalities--state to state and even within counties.
But hunting deer generally requires a permit--and by extension, that generally means that a single hunter is only allowed to take a single deer a year--and is only allowed within certain seasons. There's even restrictions on which firearms you may use--some parts of the seasons are limited to bow hunting.
I've never heard of deer hunting being allowed in winter months.

i have seen some comics in which the ringmaster is portrait as a dognose instead of a human, like the one were dumbo meets honest john and gideon that colin talked about in the dumbo comics video
Owls, on an average dont hunt rabbits, skunks and deers though. They mostly hunt rodents, so it would be fairly natural that the main characters could interact with Owl without fear. He is also one of the residents of the forest so the animals understand what he is and how he hunt. Its kinda funny but predator and prey can exist close to eachother without issues, well untill predator gets hungry. Man is not a resident of the forest. To the animals, man is like what a demon is to us. Surreal and unnatural.
As a kid I always considered the snobby old lady elephant who ostracizes Dumbo for his ears and then for becoming a clown to be a bigger villain, or one of the Pink Elephants just cause...urgghh. That one that's just made of heads scared me as a kid based on looks alone
I really love bambi such a wonderful movie and I really adore his relationship with faline so adorableilly wholesome

Yeah, I never really saw the Ringmaster as a villain. Just a businessman who wants to run a successful circus.

I owned the DVR game, and I was genuinely confused about the Ringmaster being antagonistic. I barely remembered the character, but even as I kid I knew that he wasn't absolutely malicious.
That initial, eviler Ringmaster sure is an anti-Semitic stereotype.
In a Little Golden Book adaptation by Teddy Slater, there is a scene where the Ringmaster is furious at Dumbo for ruining the pyramid act that he threatens to send the little elephant to a zoo until the Ringmaster calmed down and decided to make Dumbo a clown instead since he looks funny.
Interesting how that book made him also more threatening.
I have to wonder if that's based a deleted scene.

Fun fact: Felix Salten, author of Bambi, is also most likely the author of the uncredited "Josephine Mutzenbacher". The latter book is, no joke, an erotic book detailing the sexual exploits of a little Viennese girl. The book begins when she's 5 and ends with her officially becoming a brothel prostitute at 13. Unlike Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita, Salten's Josephine is played 100% straight, chiefly for titillation. Lolita was a subversion, and Nabokov himself was amused by readers who complained that Lolita was too dry/not steamy enough.
It should be noted that the original book "Bambi" is NOT children's literature. The scene where Gobo is shot is described in gory detail ("bloody entrails oozing from his flank"). Salten was absolutely not a children's author, and I find the idea of people thinking he was due to the Disney film absolutely hilarious.
Also, now I'm just imaging the bizarre alternate universe where Josephine was the Salten novel chosen for adaptation by Disney. Y'all think Bambi was heavily altered from the source material? Ain't seen nothin' yet...
I loved the wolf in Peter and the wolf and made me obsess over the story in general. The wolf to me was my nightmare and childhood as basically the night terrors showed me how the dream world works in a way. I’ve actually own the mini movie and often would have an obsession with stories that had wolfs as the antagonists and anything to do with scares
That Dumbo sequel sounds like it might have been a fun time- maybe nothing stellar, but the plot sounds like it could have provided some good moments and it had potential to be one of the decent Disney DTV sequels if they played their cards right.
Due to that behind the scenes trailer ironicly some people belive the film may have been finished when it was canceled.
Bambi is more understanding than the cartoon . In the book man isn’t evil in the book he’s a misunderstood figure. He only hunts for food to help his family and maybe for himself too . The hunting dogs are just dogs . But after the hunter accidentally shots himself Bambi and his father finally understand man isn’t evil hes just a misunderstood figure.
The hunting dog fighting the fox is one of most disturbing pages I ever read . The animals in forest tuant the dog but he tells them no no no I love him and he loves me . Man and hunting dog aren’t evil there just misunderstood figures

You compared the ominous music signaling the threat of Man to the ominous music from "Jaws". Interestingly, "Bambi" had a re-release in 1975, around the exact same time as "Jaws". Coincidence?
I remember something I read on Wikipedia that Man would be voiced by the late great Christopher Lee in Bambi 2 back in 2006.
I remember seeing people talking about that in some old forum archives, but I can't seem to find any direct citation for Lee's involvement (i.e. a press release or something).
my dad is a big outdoorsman and he's deer hunted many times. even has some mounted on the wall. yet Bambi is one of his favorite Disney films. mine as well. of course we're gonna be seen as the villains through the perspective of these wild animals. its only natural.
So, next episode we'll discover "The Three Caballeros" film has no antagonist at all, but its awesome spinoff action-adventure show "Legend of the Three Caballeros" has 2 awesome main villains (Lord Felldrake Sheldgoose and his descendant Baron Sheldgoose), and lots of great episodic villains like the queen lava-lizard, the Yokai, the dragon, the goblins and the giant termites for Donald and friends to fight against.
I will probably talk about "Legend of the Three Caballeros" another time, since you're right that it had a good roster of villains.

"Man" is the #20 greatest villain in AFI. He is the only one who's enigmatic and is not seen physically in the movie.
That one random ass hunter probably traumatized more children than any other Disney villain, bar perhaps only the headless horseman, and we never even see him.
not long ago i saw a version of Tim burton, but there, instead of being a victim and falling to whipped cream dumbo was a firefighter who had to use his trunk and spray water onto fire
I don't consider man from bambi a villain, he was simply hunting and considering the implied time period and season in the scene most likely was just feeding his family. If you want a truly evil but not generic version of him, look no further then the hunter from babar, in the first episode or so he shown stalking Barbara elephant pack and kills his mother, but babar breaks his gun and instead of taking revenge spares the hunter , showing the mercy the hunter didn't, its not until the storyline where babar returns to the jungle to teach them about the modern world that the hunter returns with a troop of men to hunt down the rest of the jungle and it is heavily implied hes going after babar out of spite, he later causes an oil fire to burn the animals alive but the animals work together to put it out...the fire backfired and while his men escaped the flames, his hatred was so grand that he refused to leave the flames till he got his prey , ending his life and leaving a wasteland where his camp once stood.
Also I'd like to add the troop master motivation in villains revenge made no sense...the man benefited greatly from dumboo learning to fly as shown at the end of the movie ...so why would he want that to change?

So wait, there was an actual sequel novel to Bambi, one that was about his children (which is similar to many Disney Sequels), but when it came time to make a sequel they had it be a midquel? What the hell Disney?
I suppose it's symbolically fitting that man's greatest act of harm comes via not evil, but simple incompetence. Isn't that always the way it is with people?
Legal hunting and fishing may very well be necessary, but that doesn't change what the hunters did to Bambi's mom, so illegal hunters and fishers should be held responsible for animal cruelty.
I always felt that man probably wasn't a hunter as much as he was a poacher. Of course as a child I felt that killing any animal for fun was just strait evil (and I still do tbh) but I think that's qualifies man as directly evil. He's not just hunting for food or ever for sport. He's targetting a doe and her baby. Then later in the film he shoots a shotgun at a rabbit, at mice, at tiny birds. He's not hunting, he's just killing everything in his path, letting his dogs loose to rip apart anything he can find, them through they own negligence sets fire to the woods, no doubt killing countless animals.
That shit is evil. Hunting for food and (even though I think they're pathetic cowards) sport is one thing. This is just a massicre.
I think man from Bambi is more of a antagonist force then a villan since he’s technically not a character because we know absolutely nothing them we don’t see them, know there personality there portrayed more like a natural disaster then a character but thats just me
In the book it goes something like this;
Fox: He is a monster who destroys everything!
Dog: no He is creator of all things who deserves to take whatever he wants so get with the program!
