What It Means to Choose Freedom

  • This past Sunday, Bari Weiss gave a speech at 92NY called “The State of World Jewry.” The address is a historic one. Over four decades, it has been delivered by the likes of Elie Wiesel, Abba Eban, Amos Oz, and more.
But for a sense of the state of Jewish life in America these days, you only need to have walked by the building in the hours leading up to and after the speech. You would’ve found that police had cordoned off the entire block and for good reason: anti-Israel protesters, many wearing masks, gathered to intimidate Bari and those who came to the lecture. On the way in, you would’ve been screamed at-told you were a “baby killer” and “genocide supporter” among other choice phrases. You might have even glimpsed Jerry Seinfeld being heckled and called “Nazi scum” on his way out of the talk.
The NYPD and the entire staff of 92NY made sure that everyone who attended the talk was able to do so safely. But everyone must ask themselves: Do you want to live in a country in which simply giving a speech about a Jewish subject requires police protection? What does that reality say about the state of our country and our freedoms?
Bari’s words offer some measure of explanation about the moment we find ourselves in and how we might emerge from it.

@@desertari decent and ethical people do not in any way hate the Jews and do not group all of one race as the same. It’s sad that there is so much hostility towards the Jewish people at this time …it’s like the world has gone insane but I feel it is a minority of loud and undiscerning people who are hateful. …..and they must be suffering so much as to be so hateful is surely very hard indeed to live with. @@theinngu5560you know I think people don’t actually realise what is going on. Not really. Decades of anti Israel propaganda, conflation of post colonial narratives that demonise the “oppressor” Jew/zionist/israeli. Meanwhile there is more Jew hatred in the fundaments of Islamic Scripture (the Quoran) than in Mein Kamf. I read the Quoran over Christmas, anyone can and you can read for yourself how easily it is used to exacerbate the chorus of global hatred and scapegoating against 0.2% of the world who are Jews. I actually think good moral people need to truly wake up and realise that the enemies of freedom are coming for all we hold sacred and take for granted in the west. Israel has to be democratic because of the nature of Jewish debating discourse and need for individual sovereignty within a tribe. It is a role model for the world that we all benefit from. What is good for Jews is good for all of us. These are very serious times.

I'm a liberal atheist, and I appreciate what Bari is doing, and find it sad what leftist protestors are doing in this country (and around the world). I've generally found that, while religion has nuggets of hope and wisdom, so many of its adherents have demonstrated illogic (understandable... religion isn't logical) and hypocrisy (troubling, but also understandable). What I see on the left left today is essentially a mirror of this illogic and hypocrisy I've seen on the right. It's sad. I appreciate strong centrist voices, whether they be center left or center right, to help ground politics. We need more of it.

I also feel honored to be Jewish. I try to gently educate people when I work in an office that doesn't know anything about Judaism. I am active in my synagogue and did all I could to support Israel and the IDF, especially after Oct. 7th. Our Rabbi led a book group with Barri's book on fighting anti-Semitism. I know that I have cousins that I have never met in Israel. I consider Jews all over the world part of my extended family and although I have very limited resources, I do all I can to help. We must always be there for each other.

To be a Jew means to help others feel at ease in the world.
As Joseph in Egypt chosen to serve others
chosen to help others make their way in the world
      chosen to sustain the world
chosen to serve -not to be served

Tucker Carlson explained why he showed the subway station in Moscow on Glenn Beck's show. He showed it to make Americans look at themselves and their environment. It was a reminder that it is on us to make our homes clean and beautiful. It's not a choice for Russians. It is a choice for us. We choose filth. We choose dangerous criminals running amuck. That's not a demagogue. That's a mirror.

26:00 This is so true. I spent 15 years studying music composition at some of the best music schools in the country and gave up on that career for a decent paying job fixing people's email because even 5 years ago I could see the writing on the wall that as a man, as a Jew, and as someone who refuses to lie about my beliefs I would be locked out of fairly competing for jobs and opportunities. And what breaks my heart is that even if we manage to fix this anti-liberal culture in the arts, it will be too late for the dreams I gave up on.

Most of us Jews in our Ivy League music composition graduate program somehow didn't graduate - just frozen out without enough financial aid and no one caring about our work. I don't think any went on to a faculty position. I had a paid career mostly in the tech industry and taught music at some community colleges part time. Now composition is a field for the wealthy who can afford the expensive gear and software tools and who can afford to pay orchestras or smaller groups to play their music. That's how it works nowadays, the composer paying an amount for each performer. And it's never enough to ensure adequate rehearsal time.

"the brittle is the fence that separates civilization from barbarism" is a thing and a state of mind (and great quote by Bari). The mainstream media promotes conflict for profit, Americans who opt for prejudice instead of knowledge. The fence is very brittle, more and more, everywhere, indeed. Americans need to be led back to the idea of America, as Lincoln proposed with charity to all. And with Langston Hughes' poem as a North Star.

I have been a subscriber to Bari's everything since Day 1 and I cried throughout this address ~ NOT just for Jews and Israel, but for all of us in America who think we are still free and are not seeing the incredible threat to that freedom, NO MATTER who you are, Jew, non Jew, atheist, Christian.

It makes two of us who cries a lot for our beloved country (USA) and for our freedom. I am a political/Jewish refugee from USSR (1989) and I naively thought that I escaped from USSR and its communism forever...Little did I know that the phantom of it's idiocy will catch me here, in USA. Awful.

I'm worried, too. I'm not Jewish but an atheist living in growing Muslim community.... It's getting worse and worse. A few days ago, Islamists set a school building (a portable, but it was on a weekend so it was empty) on fire and wrote down anti-gay and pro-Palestine messages on the walls. I'm not sure if I can raise my kid here...

We're Egyptian Jews who had to leave Alexandria in the 50's. There were almost a million Jews in the Arab Middle East who were kicked out of the countries we've lived in for thousands of years b4 Islam. We are the natives in the Middle East and nobody brings this up.

@aerialmarketing. I’m Jewish, from Canada. I didn’t learn about this expulsion until I was in my 20s. I’m a senior now. I was horrified and outraged.
There are a lot of ignorant comments online made by people who know nothing of us yet feel free to pass judgment.
I point out the expulsion of the North African Jews and I am met with “you’re lying”
The willing ignorance of these people is enraging. And they toss these labels like colonizers and oppressors around as if they know what it’s like to experience it.
I really fear for this world if these are future leaders.
