      What you’re paying for is quality. It’s built in the same plant that makes the Lexus GX in Japan. Because of this it shares many parts with Lexus and its built to the same standards as Lexus. The Tahara plant built the first Lexus, the LS400, which was the most well built and reliable car ever made. If you watch the reviews they all note how well built the pre-production 4Runners are with excellent build quality and no rattles compared to a Tacoma. The 4Runner has more in common with a Lexus GX than it does a Tacoma.
      People want everything cheap these days and then complain how nothing doesn’t last compared to years ago. They don’t last because they make them cheap so the price is less. That famous 1980 basic gold refrigerator that would never die costs around $450 back then. Today that would be $1,800 for a basic fridge, no stainless steel no French doors just a box that gets cold. It would last 30 years but nobody would buy it because it’s too expensive. I personally have no problem paying more for something built with high quality parts and to a high standard.

      @ the tundra is made in USA but the Lexus that uses same engine is produced in Japan….both have failing engines…the problem is Toyota is not focusing on quality with their new models…another problem is prices have gone up but our salaries haven’t, and I love the counter comment to that saying get a better job… to that I say don’t finance a depreciating asset for 96 months … but the smarter move is to buy previous gen which is cheaper and more reliable … upgrade the infotainment if u want the big screen

      @@Wellh0wrya was the GX recalled like the Tundra? Also, how do you know the new one won't be reliable, it's literally just going on sale. All this crying over a turbo's reliability is silly. Toyota isn't new to turbos, ever heard of the 2JZ engine in the Supra turbo? How about the Celica Turbo and MR2 Turbo with the 3S-GTE engine?

    Some of the reviewers of the new 4Runner during the first drive event mentioned they think the 4Runner engine feels smoother than the new Land Cruiser. Could this be an issue of tuning because the new Land Cruiser is tuned for premium fuel and a global market versus the new 4Runner doesn't require premium fuel and is tuned for the US market? Perhaps the 4Runner engine smoothness is something TFL can confirm with back to back drives of the 4Runner and Land Cruiser to get a real world opinion. Thanks!

    Roman is right when he talks about the difference between Europe and U.S., as far as family car is concerned. In Europe, a VW Golf 4 door is a family car.

    • @showmemorefunthings9208
      @showmemorefunthings9208 6 часов назад +7

      That's mostly because of two things. First, Europeans don't tend to be as fat as Americans, which makes having a smaller car easier to use for a fmaily. Second, the older European cities have narrower roads, which makes driving a larger vehicle around town more difficult. Primarily it's number one above.

    Toyotas have never been cheap, until recently. A Camry in the ‘90s started at $16,000. That’s right at $30K today with no power windows, locks or anything like that. But you got the best made family sedan in the world that would serve you for many miles and years beyond their less expensive competitors. But as the American market changed and got more price sensitive Toyota had to lower their price and lower their production costs to compete. This is why newer Toyotas feel cheaper than Toyotas from 20+ years ago. In turn they have more build quality issues, recalls, cheaper feel and warranty repairs.
    They also make less vehicles in Japan for the North American market because it’s cheaper to make them in N.A. That’s not the case with the 4Runner, it’s made in Japan at the same plant that makes the Lexus GX and Land Cruiser and has been like that since the beginning. The 4Runner is made to a higher standard than a Tacoma with higher quality parts. This is why newer Toyotas 4Runner is more expensive than a Bronco or a Wrangler, its parts are higher quality and it’s build quality is better. Simply put, like all 4Runners before it, this one is overbuilt. When Toyota was still importing Camrys from Japan owners later discovered that parts weren’t always interchangeable with Camrys built in N.A. Although the 4Runner has the same engine and transmission as the Tacoma, it’s built to a higher standard in Japan. Notice that the Lexus GX didn’t get recalled even though they have the same engine as the Tundra.
    Do you want a vehicle with the same capabilities as the 4Runner and less expensive but lower quality get a Bronco or Wrangler. If you want the vehicle that will be pulling the Bronco or Wrangler off the trail 10+ years from now get the 4Runner.

    I understand that it could be a mixed message. I think one of the reasons why it's a mixed message is because most people don't do the analysis the way Toyota was trying to do the lineup. First, you start off with the fact that when you do a new generation of trucks, mainly if you've languished for a long time behind the competition, you tend to overcorrect on the next generation. In 2014, when Toyota updated the Tundra, they did not update the powertrain, and the GM 6.2L continued to make more power than the 5.7 iForce. Still, it also started achieving better fuel economy. With the current generation, it appears that iForce Max for Tundra answers the GM 6.2L V8. Their mindset had to be.
    How do we get more horsepower than that engine while achieving better fuel economy. So when they say that hybrid is for power, it probably is. We traditionally view hybrids as having a much better fuel economy than traditional Otto cycle gas engines. It doesn't appear that Toyota did it for traditional fuel economy reasons it appears that they did it for achieving the best fuel economy among the most powerful engines. They needed an engine at the top of their line and had the specs to compete with other top-of-the-line powertrains in that class. Optimizing it for the best fuel economy Is probably closer to what most people expected, but for them, it probably would have left a hole in their lineup. They must use the hybrid system to have that top-tier powerful engine to compete with the other brands' most powerful engines. The reason they have to use the hybrid system that way is because they don't want to create another engine. By using the hybrid system, this way they can create another more powerful engine using the same block. That would save money for the Tundra project
    When you do not project to sell as many trucks as Ford or GM, you might find creative ways with your engine blocks as you don't want too many different types of blocks. Project managers in bean counters will definitely not approve that many blocks of that project as they won't get a return on investment from the new generation. If they wanted to add a new engine to the Tundra lineup for better fuel economy, they would probably do the 3.4L V6 without the twin-turbo setup but use the hybrid to compete against the Ford 2.7L Ecoboost. The 3.4L block is probably the only block they'll use in this generation of Tundra. The entry-level SR used a detuned, less powerful twin-turbo 3.4L iForce. They didn't develop a smaller displacement entry-level block. I'm only speculating based on the pattern they're using for this generation.

What the 4Runner is saying, is it is comfortable, most reliable and competent, something the Ranger Wapter or Bronco cannot ever say----ever. You all do these comparisons with the best most expensive vehicles. Do an off road test with the most base vehicle and the smallest tires, that is the test of a true best 4x4, not one with 36 inch tires...

    The 2WD is not dead. In California and even in other areas, most prerunners are 2WD. I live in Canada and recently bought a 2016 2WD Canyon with a manual transmission because the manual is still desirable, and V-Bar tire chains give a 2WD the traction of a 4x4. I don't see the value of Toyota trucks & SUVs because they seem too expensive for what you get in a 4x4 that is used as a city commuter thay may occasionally drive on gravel/dirt roads or mild off-road trails. I'm eager to see the release of the compact Telo electric truck in 2026. The Telo is the length of a 2-door Mini Cooper, gets 350 miles of range with a 106 kWh battery, can carry 1,600 lbs, can tow 6,600 lbs, can carry 8-foot sheets of plywood in the bed with midgate down and the tailgate up. The Telo has 10 inches of ground clearance on 215/65R16 All Terrain tires and is available with solar panels on the roof and in the hard tonneau cover. The price starts at $49,999 and is available in 2WD or 4WD and I think Telo is more interesting than the Rivian and the Scout. Both Rivian and Scout tried to turn a large heavy truck into an EV by adding batteries that make it even heavier and less efficient and they become pointless as an energy saving EV.

    The 4Runner is a great derivative of the Tacoma. Possibly built better (in Japan), very practical and versatile. A car which fits the lifestyle of many. The problem is its exuberant price for what it is. We will have a surge in demand in the beginning. Then it will die out as it did with the Land Cruiser 1958 which my local dealer offers for $6500 off the sticker. I think Toyota overshot it with the price.

    I think the biggest issue, and the overall pricing dovetails with this, is too many trims and too few options on most of them. No SR5 Premium option is a HUGE mistake, as is the Platinum trim…anyone looking at that (blonde wealthy suburban women) are most likely buying the Landcruiser instead, too much overlap for cross shopping at that price. Also, the average consumer does not care about the drivetrain, power or exhaust notes.

    For everyone complaining about the price there has been about 66% inflation in the US from 2005 to 2025. A base 4wd 4runner in 2005 was $30k compared to $44k now. So the 4 runner saw a 46% price inflation over the last 20 years or 20% less than the standard US inflation rate. Don't blame the car manufacturers, blame the government and federal reserve.
