This is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard, what's more, I was listening to it for years without realising it was far more than the soundtrack to my all-time favourite TV programme - The 1980 BBC series 'Great Railway Journeys of the World - Coast to Coast with Ludovic Kennedy'. This performance is certainly the best I've heard so far.

When I was young (many years ago) I used to visit relatives in Pennsylvania. I had an uncle who had a farm near Bethlehem PA. that was so different from my home on Long Island. I stayed in the upstairs bedroom that had an old-fashioned feather bed and a handmade quilt. I remember waking up to the sounds of a rooster, something I had never heard for real before. It was a very special time I shall always remember. Now at 78 this music takes me back to that wonderful vacation on the farm. Absolutely beautiful music for a wonderful memory. This performance of Appalachian Spring is one of the best I have ever heard.

Members of Frankfurt Radio Symphony: By producing this magnanimous video of Copland's Appalachian Spring, you have shown the world the indomitable love for beauty and grace that is inherent in humanity. Refusing to allow even a pandemic to harm or destroy the beauty within, you found a way to make this happen (without endangering anyone - nice work!) and in so doing demonstrated yourselves to be among the finest representatives of humanity during an intensely inhuman experience. And as if that were not enough, to perform a quintessential American work with a Mexican conductor at the helm, and in the heart of Germany, it doesn't get better than that. You have brightened my corner of the world with this recording, and I will be forever grateful for my friends in Frankfurt. (p.s. Amazing performance and fantastic interpretation by Alondra de la Parra with her enthusiasm she always brings to her orchestras performance. Well done by all of you. 🎼
Quick points of information: This is the original "pit orchestra" but with expanded strings. The 1944 premiere venue could only hold 13 musicians - flute, clarinet, bassoon, piano, two first violins, two seconds, two violas, two cellos, and contrabass. Also, the music they're playing isn't the complete ballet but the assembled excerpts of the concert suite. The score of the fully orchestrated suite has this note from Copland: "The original scoring called for a chamber ensemble of thirteen instruments. The present arrangement for symphony orchestra was made by the composer in the Spring of 1945. It is a condensed version of the ballet, retaining all essential features but omitting those sections in which the interest is primarily choreographic."
I don't think you understand how much this helps me. I am writing a concert report for this and I was confused as to which one I was watching. You da best!

Die Virtuosität aller Einzelspieler ist wahrlich ergreifend. Die geniale Dirigentin leitet das kompakte und ausgezeichnete Orchester in verschiedenen Tempi und mit sorgfältig kontrollierter Dynamik. John Brown, I was wondering if you meant Imprecise when you imprecisely typed unprecise? Okay, criticize further as you must. Oh, is "very mediocre" high praise like a c+, or am I mistaking the precision of your usage? Is it just beneath excellent, which must fall below "very excellent". Right? Thought so...
I have always loved this piece, but with this more chamber orchestration, you hear the subtleties of the harmony, and can appreciate the expressive playing of the musicians.
Really wonderful music, and a wonderful interpretation. It is good for us old Europeans to sometimes hear something from the "new world". As here in Coplands brilliant symphonie.
The flautist plays with authority. Fun to watch. This is a very difficult piece to get right. Syncopation everywhere, counterpoint all over the place, changes time signature 25 times. Tough. This group does very well.
Quite apart from the exceptional musicianship, the audio-visual team deserves special thanks: the videography is as good as I've seen anywhere among many excellent performances during the pandemic. Kudos!
Copland - for me land of hope and freedom; seit ich selbst einst die Appalachen vor Jahren bereist habe, verbinde ich mit dieser Suite nur die wärmsten Empfindungen. Perfekt eingespielt. Ich war bei den Tönen gefühlt grad' wieder drüben (in dem Amerika, das ich einst liebte). Danke hr für Eure hochwertigen Audio/Video-Einspielungen 🥰.

Einfach wunderbar!
A very fine performance and the recorded sound, as usual with the FRS, is glorious.
Exquisitely beautiful! Thank you!
Wonderful, life-affirming music and a superb performance. The Frankfurt RSO are a treasure on RUclips.
Well said!!!
Amen! Where has this orchestra been? Doesn't seem to matter who the conductor is. Another great job, RUclips! (July 14, 2020)
I don’t think Copland’s work can be described any other way than life affirming
John Brown, I was wondering if you meant Imprecise when you imprecisely typed unprecise? Okay, criticize further as you must. Oh, is "very mediocre" high praise like a c+, or am I mistaking the precision of your usage? Is it just beneath excellent, which must fall below "very excellent". Right? Thought so...
Hermoso Maestra de la Parra. Es usted un orgullo de México.
A spellbinding performance of a work that has been in my heart for over 50 years. You have made me love it even more!
I have always loved this piece, but with this more chamber orchestration, you hear the subtleties of the harmony, and can appreciate the expressive playing of the musicians.
has the quality and feel and look and sound of both a chamber orchestra and full size orchestra combined- great in 1 word
This is amazing ! I absolutely love this peace and this is an incredible rendition ! Wow ! Really beautiful ! 🌷👏🌷👏🌷
What an outstanding piece of music. Really moving. Thank you Alondra and the Frankfurt Radio Symphony for enabling us to be so moved by this feast.
Really wonderful music, and a wonderful interpretation. It is good for us old Europeans to sometimes hear something from the "new world". As here in Coplands brilliant symphonie.
Excuse me, this is not a symphonie, rather some sort of musical suite...
There is something wrong with our social value system. These are the people who should be driving golden chariots. Thank you for your wonderful gift.
To be fair, high level orchestral musicians often make in the 6 figures.
Not that there isn't plenty else wrong with our social value system.
Can't be easy producing good music during this crazy time, but I enjoyed this so much. Thank you.
This familiar masterpiece is comfortable to the ears and the mind due to this splendid performance .
This was beautiful. Absolutely gorgeous. Very well done.
Wow! Imagine all this music from such a relatively small ensemble! Muchas gracias Alondra and musicians! And of course, Copeland 😁
The flautist plays with authority. Fun to watch. This is a very difficult piece to get right. Syncopation everywhere, counterpoint all over the place, changes time signature 25 times. Tough. This group does very well.
Outstanding performance and sound quality. Thank you.
The combination of de la Parra and the Frankfurt Radio Symphony is splendid.
Yes. They kinda seem to get along with every conductor which also tells me that this orchestra is just great.
Quite apart from the exceptional musicianship, the audio-visual team deserves special thanks: the videography is as good as I've seen anywhere among many excellent performances during the pandemic. Kudos!
It soothes my mind and soul. Thank you RUclips
Aber vielen Dank für diese hervorragende Aufführung! Als Amerikaner Ihr habt mich so stolz auf unseren berümtesten Komponist gemacht.
Exquisite musicianship, wonderful audio engineering, and precise camera work...perfection!
Copland has a great grasp of space and less is more. He can create his own particular set of colors. Peace mixed with joy.
This performance is simply amazing. Thanks!
Breathtaking! Love you FRSO! Perfectamente ! Alondra de la Parra is sublime.
Copland - for me land of hope and freedom; seit ich selbst einst die Appalachen vor Jahren bereist habe, verbinde ich mit dieser Suite nur die wärmsten Empfindungen. Perfekt eingespielt. Ich war bei den Tönen gefühlt grad' wieder drüben (in dem Amerika, das ich einst liebte). Danke hr für Eure hochwertigen Audio/Video-Einspielungen 🥰.
