  • The Marvel Legends Cabal pre-order pricing snafu seemed to bring out some harsh feelings about the Marvel Legends line all over again despite some major strides the brand has taken in the past year and a half.
What would it take for collectors to fully embrace the line after a rough patch in the early 2020s?

I have to give it to the ML team, they really managed to regroup after some less than stellar years and in 2024 (so far) avoided major blunders while delivering certified bangers. Let's hope this momentum will be maintained in 2025 as well.

Also, 5 Toys R Us & 3 K-Marts, when they still existed. Also 6 TJX's & Marshalls, 3 Five Belows & 3 Barnes & Nobles & 4 Best Buys. So, yeah I can't complain, in terms of location.
Also, I've seen all the figures that was mentioned. Except for Power Princess. Certain figures I have, such as Clea, I got from Pulse. Only I'm not spending hundreds of dollars on these things anymore. More cherry-picking these days. Unless, it's just a plain awesome figure. Such as the Walgreens exclusive Thing. Even though I have a strong X-Men focus, I do have some Avengers, Spider-Man & various other characters. Although, I did miss out on a bunch of X-Men multi packs & the Blob. Legends has won me back. 2019 was a high year for them, and they continued to make bad decisions that hurt the line and they kept trajecting downward until about Q3 last year.
Once I could see a noticeable improvement, by bringing back window packaging, adding in more accessories, and also doing a ton of new tooling, I started to become satisfied with my purchases at $25 again.
2024 is clear that they're trying to turn the shop around. Nearly every wave and every multpack has been completely acceptable and I don't feel like they're gouging us or taking advantage of us. Hulkbuster was the first item in a while to feel overpriced, but that's the outlier and not the norm. Well, I never left Legends buying, but if they want to take away my skepticism, they need to NOT put me through crap like that Warbird fiasco! And that's exactly what it was. Yeah, yeah, we've been promised that Target will plenty of figures in and they'll be available in July, but the stress I went through trying to figure out why the figure sold out in the blink of eye--why Target's site wasn't working--why Target didn't have triple the stock that they did?? I hate exclusives, and I despise the way Hasbo does "pre-orders." They're NOT pre-orders at all. They're just offering advanced sales of LIMITED quantities. It's not the same thing at all, and it simply is a gimmick to build hype and created FOMO. It might very well work, but eventually it will rub collectors the wrong way, and already has. Many people that left got tired of "jumping through the Hasbro hoops" of trying to get a figure. They're not willing to go through the stress that Hasbro has created with this tactic anymore. If Legends wants to keep me buying, they have to make their product more easy to obtain. Exclusives are, for the most part, a pain in the @$$, and Target exclusives during the first year of GI JOE CLASSIFIED contributed a lot to collector's discontent, which in turn helped to nearly kill the line. Luckily Hasbro changed course, and decided to re-issue Baroness and the Cobra Infantry figures, because the scalpers were the only ones who seemed to be collecting those exclusives. Legends has been doing much better, but I don't think the line is out of the woods yet. It's still on shaky ground despite all of Hasbro's recent efforts, so another misstep situation like the Warbird exclusive figure, could put Legends back in the doghouse. Yeah, it was Target's screwup, but the responsibility for all this exclusive business still falls at Hasbro's feet. The unattainable Warbird pre-order was a bad look for Legends. No more of that!
On the positive note, Kazar/Zabu wave was fun as is the new Iron Man wave! Kazar and Za-bu! Ikaris! Wolfsbane at last! A great looking She-Hulk! Finally getting a replacement for that dated, small-scale Iron Man 9 figure! Count Nefaria! Whiplash! We're also getting the Danny Ketch Ghost Rider! An (almost) classic Iron Fist! A new Doctor Doom with Doombot head...and a cloth-goods cape!! Who would have thunk it??! A new Taskmaster too! Things are just looking up and up! The X-Men '97 figures were a mixed bag, but mostly good I think. The sculpting and paint are improving across the board. I am hopefully that we will be able to get Warbird figures too, because she is exactly what I was hoping for. She's got some feminine shape and a modern and classic head that are both beautiful. I hope the Secret Wars figures that keep being mentioned include a nice, classic Rogue! That would be a hoot! It seems very likely that we'll get a brown and beige Wolverine figure that's pinless later in the year also. For me, this is the BEST Legends figures to come out since 2018, Jeffrey! I think Hasbo IS actually getting fans to come back to the line, but they need to take care not to stumble. I don't think they've fully earned the customer goodwill. They still have to keep the good stuff coming out if they want to get that back.

@@LylesFigureFiles Nah. I'll get her, I'm sure. Just venting frustrations, more or less. As long as Hasbro keeps striving to improve, and keeps giving us good, exciting figures we can get, Jeffrey, I'll be along for the ride. The problem about stating complaints is that complaints are by nature a negative, so if you leave them, it leaves only the negative vibe. Truth is I'm actually a happy collector of figures. I'm just not one to be a fan of something unconditionally. Hasbro's Legends team, by and large are doing well. I can tell you though, I'm not a guy who likes being jerked around much. Warbird got me excited, heated, and upset. I don't love stress, and that's one of the most stressful mornings that I've had in years in regards to toy shopping/hunting, etc, but that's as much on me as on Hasbro. I'm trying not to let my passion get the better. I feel confident I'll get the figure. I just don't think that Hasbro and Target should make these exclusive figures so difficult to get. I know I'm not going to cough up money for the scalpers on eBay, that's for sure. lol

The body proportions are also all over the place with low shoulders bad anatomy. I mentioned this on other youtubers channels, but people can't forget that Hasbro is a business. The price increases are offsets for overall costs (e.g. net new molds, new technology, supply chain, etc). Their primary goal is not to save customers money. If you save money and they don't make the bottom line set by their shareholders, then they will cut the line. Haslab is more expensive to offset risk, limited runs content with net new molding etc. You can chose, as I did, not to fund these things and see if their course correction is enough to keep collecting

    - anniversary cap
    - supaidaman
    - animated shocker
    - she-hulk
    - 97 jean grey

    - SHIELD 3 pack
    - Logan/Sabertooth
    - Colossus/Juggernaut
    - Danny Ketch GR

I still think I LOVE other figure lines more. I do think what I am doing now is getting into the idea of just getting my ideal figure and then being done outside of characters I collect like Spider-Man (I'm picky), Agent Venom, Venom, etc. I will jump on that 85th anniversary Venom. The fact that if I want anything I have to get it online sucks a bit...I miss being able to just go to Target and pick up a new figure...seems like Gamestop does better than Target does :| I had Cable pre-ordered and then I walked into a Gamestop and they had like 3 of them. Amazing video Jeffrey - thanks. Your topic is very poignant in 2024 considering the indiscretions recently experienced in years prior with ML. There are many positives that the ML team can be responsible for in 2024 that erase bad memories. Yet I am weary of the possibilities that ML can reduce the gains earned by sliding back into those dreary days. A phenomenon within the action figure community is the capability for anyone with their own likes be comfortable with others that do not share in the same. My perspective on the ML team's work is a cautious optimistic one. For every Sharon Carter there is a Red Widow. Yet that doesn't make ML any different from the offerings from other companies. Hey Jeff, as you probably know, I'm a mark for Hasbro Marvel Legends so I'll never give up on them. Where else am I gonna get figures with this deep a roster, with excellent paint and articulation for only 25% of the cost of imports like MAFEX?
That being said, Hasbro has made both Good and Bad choices, so I'll try to sum up my list as follows. Some of these you already touched on...
GOOD: 1. Constantly improving bucks by adding different body types and improved articulation. 2. Completing teams quicker. 3. More accessories these days. 4. More focus on Comic Book characters (might change, time will tell) 5. Super deep bench that gives me the characters I know plus teaching me in some cases about those I don't.
BAD: 1. Trying out too many price points: Make a default price point ($24.99) and a Deluxe price point ($39.99) and stick to it. 2. Pre-Order date madness: Give us real delivery dates so we can better plan our budget$. 3. Unwanted figures to get pieces for desirable BaF's: This is controversial because one man's Wolverine is another man's Ikaris (no hate) I get it, every one has a different favorite obscure character, however, I'd like to be able to buy a Zabu deluxe figure without needing to get an Ikaris. (Good figure, I just don't want any Eternals). 4. Chunky plastic capes: If I wanted a statue I would buy those, but I want to pose my characters so I buy Marvel Legends. Some of these chunky plastic capes make it impossible (or less fun). Let's do fabric capes with wires so we can get dynamic poses. I know some people don't like soft goods but I feel it's because too many in the past were like simple, thin pieces of cloth with no form. If you do them like MAFEX, thicker, heavier and with wires, I think people would be happier. More $$$ but probably worth it for the characters that need it.
Anyway, still love 'em, always will. Good video Jeff! -"Always Runnin' at the Mouth" RetroRobo.

Imo its like the movie the Menu. When hasbro puts in genuine love and care for their toys they come out with bangers while mcu figures and some comic figures are more to hit deadlines or pump something out. Its when the sculptors and painters and manufacturers are given time and resources and something to actually put effort into where it shines. Retro Tombstone, Movie Carnage, She Hulk retro, Wolverine vs Sabretooth, Etc. All bangers cause they were made with pure love. I actually pre ordered the Movie Carnage even though i HATE how he looked in the movie. But the pure love and passion in the figure made me actually love it. A figure of genuine effort and love actually made me 180 on a character I despise. THAT is how it should be done from now on. I was getting fed up with Hasbro and ML for awhile because all we were getting was MCU stuff (I have no use for it) and remakes of the same few characters - countless variants of Spiderman, Iron Man, Capt. America and Wolverine. This year we got a lot of classic comic book characters, which is all I care about as far as ML goes. We got Count Nefaria, Whiplash, a re-release of Kingpin, classic Wasp and Giantman, Iron Fist, the SHIELD 3-pack (one of the few releases worth of a 3-pack), etc.
What is still irritating me from Hasbro are the two-packs. I wanted a classic looking Iron Fist but have no use for the modern "thug with bling" Luke Cage and I know some people claim the Iron Fist is more based off his modern incarnation but they're virtually indistinguishable and now the ONLY way to get Iron Fist is to buy a 2-pack and pay extra for a figure I don't want and then have to sell off on Ebay. Same for this Cabal 3-pack. I don't read any comics after around 1986 and have no idea what the Cabal is. But now if I want classic Taskmaster, he'll likely never be a single release and I'll be damned if I'm gonna buy a 3 pack for 1 figure I might want. Luckily I never warmed to Taskmaster and most likely would not get him but it's the principle because it will continue to happen. So I want an end to two-packs and 3-packs unless they're logical sets, like SHIELD agents. Anyone who wants a Nick Fury SHIELD classic figure (with the original head) will also love to have Dum Dum Duggan and Sharon Carter. It's unlikely someone would want only one of those.
I'm also getting impatient with how long it's taking to build teams. We got Blackbolt and a very poorly done Medusa quite a few years ago. Then they released Karnal this past year. How long before we see Triton, Gorgon, Crystal and Maximus to complete the team? And Blackbolt on an updated body? The Avengers team will NEVER be complete until we see an original costume Wonderman, Swordsman, and Mantis.
We also have a dearth of villains. We're missing tons of villains. Instead of releasing a 99th variant of Iron Man, Spiderman, and Wolverine, how about giving us classic and important villains? The FF STILL does not have a Frightful Four (Wizard, Sandman in his green tech costume, Trapster, and either an updated Medusa or Thundra or the Brute), Mad Thinker (a 2-pack with a 2" Android would be a good thing in this case), Attuma, Blastaar, Annihilus, Rama Tut, etc. We need Gabriel the Airwalker. We've gotten pretty much every herald Galactus has ever had except his 2nd one, the Airwalker. The Avengers are still missing Korvac, Graviton, the Melter (for a Masters of Evil set), Immortus, the Collector, and many others. Major villains like Mandarin and Mephisto are still missing. I've like to complete my collection before I'm 100 years old and it feels like that's how long it's going to take.
So for me, it boils down to:
    1. Stop making 2- and 3-packs and putting vital figures behind the multi-pack paywall
2.Finish off teams they started, before giving us a 99th variant of Iron Man, Spiderman, and Wolverine
    3. Release far more villains

So, a lot of your perspective is because you're not reading Marvel beyond a certain period. And you've gotta admit that 86 is a long time to be away from the Marvel product.
Yeah, Iron Fist's costume is actually from the New Avengers to match up with that look from Cage. He has one of those costumes that's hard to improve on so they just tweak. Same with Taskmaster. This isn't the classic look for him either. It's close, but if you want the classic look wait for those as that's not what these costumes are meant to portray. I get wanting that classic look, but this isn't Hasbro being funny. They're pairing these characters with complementary characters that match the specific era.
I'm always down for more villains!

@@LylesFigureFiles Yeah, I pretty much can't stand just about everything that's been published after 1986. Some consider me a snob, but I grew up on the classics and the best writers and artists, so I am definitely biased towards higher quality stuff. It's like being raised on Beethoven and Mozart and then trying to listen to Justin Bieber and that twerking girl (forget her name).
My problem is that we'll never get CLASSIC versions of so many of these characters because they're going with altered modern versions. The classics are what Marvel is built on. We have a massive number of classic characters, so why not keep making them? They sell, that's for sure, and many of them still have the same costumes.
But yeah, we're lacking so many villains! If they'd stop making 99 versions of the same 3 characters, maybe we could get more villains and new, previously unreleased characters. But overall, so far 2024, I have to say Hasbro has upped their game significantly. I really can't wait for the Strange Tales reveal. That one almost has to be a great wave of classic villains.

    the deeper heavier things
my biggest gripe now is price and the doom pack
some people say we never get to see the sales
well maybe I d like to see them now

of bad losses with the tv Marvels and bad movie flops
perhaps also too much variety, obscure figs
there s exactly 2 guys in total New York
that want them... end on clearance - loss
    the packages
ok, it s clear, I see the face now
but accessories are stuck in plastic tight, enough to fear to break them now, I miss the Joe locker,
or the other ways to keep them sealed but loose.
I looove the shield 3 pack, as it s ideal to build your own team, all heads swap!
but I hate the cabal 3 pack, when I just want doom! should I wait clearance?
high prices shuffles the deck, people wait clearances, 0 sells, then all sells!
here in Can, it goes from $33 to 45 + tax for a reg fig, euh, that s out of impulse buying range,
un heatlhy for the hobby, a factor of crash, like the comics in the 90s, still worthless today...
maybe some guys can investigate at the losses on these tv show figs, it could explain a lot.

And, for the most part, I like what they are putting out. I'm Army Building, filling out Teams, World Building, and the good stuff. Most recently 7 Figures on my 'Holy Grails' list are now in my hand. My Holy Grails used to number over 100. Now, after 30 years and 2 months, I'm down to 10. Well, really 11 as I still want Comics Mantis. After getting The Squadron Supreme, I am now down to;
    Thunderbolts;
    Techno/Fixer
    Atlas
    (Optional Jolt)
    Comics Swordsman
    (Optional) Comics Mantis
    Warriors Three
    (Optional) Balder
    Wrecking Crew

How many people even know about cabal hell i dont even know them but admittedly i stop reading comics in 1984 but how many new collectors know them ? I buy marvel figures i like and 90% of them im not interested in but thats how i treat most companies and licenses . Being mostly a collector of supervillians ,monsters and fantasy stuff there is very little hasbro drops that i want . As long as they can keep selling wolverine ,spiderman and iron man repaints i dont see me buying any more from them than i ever have . Toy collectors are a weird bunch sense a lot collectors make a lot of excuses for companies they would not do for other products or the companies who make them . We complain about high prices for food but pay hundreds of dollars for toys or more on a regular basis . Im cutting back on toys realizing there are more important things to spend money on . I do feel like the community got really sour last year. The figures keep improving, double knee joins and double elbow joints are standard, even on the female figures. We are getting butterfly joints and diaphragm joints on more figures. Teams are getting completed. From an improvement standpoint, I would like to see a waist ball joint to bring the figures more in line with premium figures such as mafex. Stop doing rubber/plastic capes, wire capes shouldn't be much different from a cost standpoint. Capes are used to show movement in a static pose, I would prefer to not ebay them as an upgrade.
Not having MCU figures clog up the shelves has been a dream come true, the only ones in my collection are moon knight and Khonshu, since those look comics-like.
As far as what would it take to get me back, they didn't really lose me. Marvel legends in my favorite line of "affordable" figures, and I would be willing to shell out more of a premium for wired soft goods, and better torso articulation.
A few things I hope they stop doing. 2/3 packs where clearly 1 figure is what we want, and the other figure feels like a forced price increase. Build-a-figure lines with a small build-a-figure, or half the figures being undesirable. I love the void as a character, I can't bring myself to spend another $100 for the 4 figures I have yet to get, when I don't really want them. Minor tweaks or improvement to a figure we got recently. Releasing new versions of characters, then later releasing the iconic version. I felt like spider-man, dr. doom, wolverine had 4-5 iterations in a short period of time. It feels bad to buy one and 6-12 months later you have a better one, then 6-12 months later you again have a better one.
Otherwise, everything is going in the right direction, Hasbro team has been knocking it out of the park in 2024.

Count Nefaria’s belt & butterfly joints seem to be jacked up on almost all of them transparent sloppy crooked paint jobs, Ka-Zar the flesh tone plastic looks totally jacked you can see all the seam lines sticking up all over the whole figure mainly the legs & butterfly joints, & most of the Wolfsbane’s I’ve seen have the hair piece glued on off center. That’s not even mentioning the digital eye prints that you have to look out for on every single figure you buy because it’s a complete toss up - problems that shouldn’t be as prevalent of problems as they are.

    1. They need to fix the plastic, the quality has felt and looked poor for the last several years. 2. They need to justify the price point, these are still $20 figures but they're asking $25+. More accessories or small diorama pieces would increase the value. 3. They need to stop all the Retro, anniversary, and any other sets without BAFs. Legitimate size BAFs add value and there are many recent sets that didn't have one, but a large deluxe figure was sold separately and should have been a BAF. 4. They need to focus on comic characters and not the MCU/other live action stuff. 5. Keep a consistent scale. The new body molds are generally too big. 6. Fix the preorder system and distribution of exclusive figures. 7. Standardize peg sizing so all heads are interchangeable, etc.

Generic sculpts, homogenised looks, quantity over quality, no paint, poorly thought out articulation, terrible anatomy, excessive reuse, cheap looking figures, constant redos of characters because every first attempt is flawed in numerous ways and the second attempts not much better... The line is built on love of comics, popularity of Marvel movies and nostalgia for the Toybiz line. Take those three elements out and this is a mediocre line that would have died long ago. Most other 6 inch lines offer better quality lines, Jada, GiJoe, Star Wars Black and Marvel Select offers so much more value.

I would love all the “fans” who jumped off the marvel legends train would stay off. The constant hate is exhausting. I’ve mentioned it before the only way to make marvel legends “fans” realize what they have is by taking it away. GIJOE fans, now Power Ranger fans know what it feels like to lose.
