The point I intended to convey is that Afghanistan currently operates under a stringent religious regime where women are required to have a "Mahram" (male guardian) accompany them when walking, according to local laws and customs. Much love to India from Afghanistan.

You expect something like that in the West, but to see it in Afghanistan shows that even the Taliban allow their women to be disloyal to their husband(s). This shows that what you experienced years ago in Afghanistan isn't the case today. Even in the U.S., Afghani women behave like this and enjoy talking to other guys DESPITE being married, so it's just hard for me to believe that the Taliban are strict about women not engaging in such behavior

Herat and in general along border Iran is pretty liberal compared to the rest of Afghanistan. South and east is the most conservative. In the north, badakshan is also conservative. The other arieas are now becoming more conservative with the removal of ngos and such groups.

(I DONT THINK I CAN DO THIS IN AUSTRALIA to a woman or I will be charged for harassment, abuse, inappropriate behavior etc... within the confinement of law and culture-So women issue and protection is not unique to Afghanistan- however, in Afghan culture women is very much seen as a "valuable" "fragile" and "extremely protected" - This is because of societal and cultural aspect. For a single woman who is seen or interacting with another men- (it will be difficult for her and her family to find a husband for her in case she was seen with another men- (honor and pride issue)- Afghan family structure is not nuclear family structure but rather a very "large and connected network" of families and tribal connections- " so one person act or behavior can effect many other people and families- This restriction of women interaction is also not unique to Talibs! it has been like this for centuries -so this is not a restriction per say or extremist view but rather a "protective" "shell" around an individual non married women in Afghan society for a specific reason- or reasons. -also, for a married women even in an European standards a husband -partner must be aware or kept aware if wife is out, go to work, interact with friends' colleague etc... this is a natural common sense for all women- also many of you who lived and worked or visited European countries ?!!! you cannot just go, ask a European Chinese Indian woman to walk with you and have a coffee in a coffee shop-? anyone who managed to ask a random woman or even a work colleague to go for coffee with them in Europe, US, south Asia east Asia please comment and let me know? how have you managed this? (what is shown in the movies is very different to reality of life!) I believe the lady; her family or husband is known to Raja- this needs to be disclosed- because it may give people the wrong idea! In Afghanistan many families, tribes have either injured or killed each other over women (gossips-or -actual love relationships) (like in the Hindi movies)! It doesn't matter the conservatism, city, tribe ethnicity in Afghanistan. Tajiks, Uzbeks, Hazara Pashtun -all have integrated similar cultural norms based on Pashtun dominant culture- some of the comments made by people to encourage or undermine this issue is very "uninformed" and "naive "The Taliban are not stupid- they run a country and intelligent apparatus - fought wars- and survived decades of constant threats- so they monitor social media - it isn't that they are not aware, but I think they have shown great patient and also may already made aware of this interaction. I don't think Mr. Raja would do this in Saudi-Turkey-Dubai- etc... or even in India? this interaction is very public and am sure there will be some known family member or men around this lady. I think the lady, and the ladies, the man in this video been respectful of Mr. Raja for showing some of the reality and progress in Herat- but for any other person-please DO NOT TRY TO DO THIS IN AFGHANISTAN -! unless you are sure of "consent" from women- and the women family is aware, and you have the trust and "protection" of the tribe.
