    Well... here it is. The video that got me into Hondas! 13/14 year old me read a comment on another video saying “you will never beat the sound of the Honda VTEC engine”. So I searched up “Honda VTEC” and this come up. I’m now 24 and own a Honda Civic Type R EP3 (05 plate) with a K20! Thank you very much for this video!

      This video is so legendary 😂 I remember when I was 18 years old and i saw this video and it's what got me into loving Hondas, I was like yooooo, this thing is crazy 😂 I'm 28 years old now, still don't own a Honda because of how hard life is where I live but I'm still going for one. There's another video of this same car beating others cars including a VVL swap sentra. Congrats on owning a ep3 type r man, I love those things, take good care of it 😎

      Mmm where to start- 2jz, rb26, ej25, s54b32, vr6, n55, rs3 DAZA O, just to name a few without getting to the v8, v10’s, and v12’s. Honda’s are cool too though- twin turbo s2000 f20c sounds incredible, along with the h22A. but definitely aren’t the best sounding imo, which is subjective.

    Zero interior and soundproofing because racecar. Very healthy sounding K20, really does civics justice compared to base model d15 sedans with a fart can racing everyone in sight.

      so true ..... dont get me wrong love sohc but a k20 to d15 really there a hole 0.5L more on that k20a plus mods for a d15b2 d15b7 are pointless for the money cost mite as well put a turbo on it and hope for 300 if u can find forged rods for the b2 or b7...... after u go pass the 300hp-350hp- u start spinning bearings doesn't matter which one ive spun main and rods.... if ur going to go sohc d16z6 d16a6 are a better choice last longer too...

    The Supra was catching up pretty good in the end. The gutted K20 Civic (2000 lbs)weighs about 1600 lbs less than the Supra (3600 lbs), so don't feel so bad that 400whp didn't keep up. After all, that's only roughly 150whp more than the Civic, which isn't that much considering how much the Supra weighs. The torque is what brought the Supra back in the end.
    The 2JZ-GTE is no doubt awesome, but you have to keep in mind that the K20A is awesome too.

      I raced my buddies 2010 k20 civic in my 2 valve 2004 mustang. he has flashpro, upgraded flywheel, skunk 2 exhaust, and some other stuff I can't remember. not only did my shift knob fall off in second gear and I had to throw it in the floor board, but I grabbed the shift stick and blew his doors off haha. just depends on the civic and the "v8" car.
      disclosure: I had a 3.73 rear end, full exhaust, upgraded clutch, tokico suspension, nitto 555r 315/40/17's on the rear, a dyno tune, and other small things. so maybe he could use a turbo maybe THEN he could stand a chance

    I'm not one for straight line racing but the Civic is ahead of the Supra for a good 20 seconds. Considering a decent 1/4 mile would be done before 13 sec, that naturally aspirated Civic has more than enough.
    Also, the Firebird at the end reminds me of why I've put together a stock K20Z3 Del Sol (going to K24A2 this summer).

    The reason the rpm doesn't drop between shifts is he is POWER SHIFTING. You can gain maximum torque power to the wheels by not lifting off of the gas pedal in between shifts. This works best in turbo cars at the track if you are accurate and quick through the shift. This method keeps the engine in its RPM power band. & If you miss then BOOM goes your engine the pistons and valves fighting for space.

    I miss my civic. Time for another one! I had a 90 hatch dx swapped a d16a8 in it. That little bugger moved. Sold it the beginning of this year. I miss it :(

    Plot twist: Turns out the supra stayed rolling at the same speed and the Honda just took that long and all that noise just to pull away from a car that wasn't racing :) TBH it didn't look like the supra was trying... it didn't even squat at the rear...

      Will be interesting, I own a BPU supra (J-spec) and my mate genuinely has a k24 stripped ej9 civic hatch with a k20 head. I know i'll lose as his weighs 900kg and mine weight 1.6 tonnes and i'm only running about 320whp atm (awaiting intercooler and a stand alone ecu).

    I miss my old 96 civic ex had motor swapped to a d16y8 sohc VTEC wasn't bad had quite a bit of power never raced a v8 but I've raced a lot of v6s mustangs, firebirds and camaros I still wished I had that lil car reliable and fun to drive

      This civic actaully sounds like those cheap ass petrol RC cars you get, becuase thats cool... even my fucking Celica sounds nicer, although its no where near as fast haha.

      celica didnt have any sound if is not gt4, i think any 4cylinder n/a engine with that exhaust and rpm will sound aprox the same ...if you did not like it , it not means is bad......... for sport engine the sound is not principal , if it sound weird it not means that engine is slow or have bad mileage, resurces etc ........... sound it just sound it is not influence on speed of car if you want super sound buy amg m5v10 lfa srt.... wich cost a lot! more than a civic with b series.....and yes i think a civic is sport car like vw gti , lancia integrale 8v (fwd), mazda mps....

      ytb owner It depends as my celica sounds deep, yet a corsa around the corner from me sounds high pitch and sounds like a drill. Yes i know a big exhaust has no affect on speed or performance, but i wanted it for sound, i like the sound, simple as lol. A sporty car should growl and sound mean, unfortunatley some hatch backs cant pull that off, maybe if he left the cat in it woulnt sound so shit lol.

    well. the supra is twice the weight..
    stock is 280hp with the 2jz and TT. supra still weights about 4000lb. for 400hp is just 1/10 of the wieght.
    plus the civic has no interior. they cuted more weight.
    the civic weights like a rice. is actually motor with wheels. they mod it to give a lot of RPM. and HP on civic is unknown. to power the ricer. 300hp is enough. for a 1000lb car.
    the supra needs more HP since is heavier..
    ricers r shit anyways. doesnt compare to heavey weight cars. add few pounds to make it 1/10 power to weight as the supra.

      Oswaldo Castillo you have no idea what your talking about , that was a simple k20 gutted eg with Boltons with a dyno tune , which is like 4-6k and the Supra cost is 3-4x more and the civic doesent weigh 1k lbs , it weighs at least 2300+lbs . It’s ok the Supra got beat by a bus 🚌 length .

    Oh, and by the way, VTEC actually does something. To some people, it's a ricer thing to talk about, but it actually helps. Before tuning, my cars VTEC was at its stock points. You heard it switch over VERY noticeably. You would REALLY feel it too. You can actually feel that extra boost when it engages. Now my VTEC is smoothened out, and at 4200, and high boundary at 4500 RPM. Also, a well tuned motor can make power earlier than redline. I do. So who cares about what your Audi supposedly does?

    Stock k20a 220 crank hp. He has an intake, RCREW header, and buddyclub exhaust, with NO tuning, and dynod 203whp.As iv'e said already in the comments, if you could have read... 2330lbs from the factory, another 380+lbs for that driver and passenger. Another ~77lbs for gas. It's now ~2787lbs. Take a pound or 2 off for each rear panel. Then whatever the spare tire weighs. The rear seats aren't even 50lbs. But lets be generous and say he took 100lbs off. It's still heavy during this video

    It's not gutted as much as you assume. And during the filming of these races, it was much heavier than it came with both of them in the car.
    He's using a JDM k20a with just a few bolt ons and no tuning. There are full interior coupes with USDM k20's and bolt ons running faster times than he did.

    I don't think I'll ever give a fully stripped or gutted car like that much credit. Don't get me wrong, it's effective and gets the job done but I'd rather have a car that's comfortable and practical. Gutted cars just seem obnoxious to live with.

    this is in sioux falls, south dakota, my brother used to work for the guy who drives the honda civic, his name is Joey. This guy is also rich as hell lol. He also built my brother a racing transmission and tuned him a turbo.

    AGREED! But realistically a cammed trans am with exhaust, intake, and tune would've probably blown the doors off of em. The reason people build those motors is because they make power EASY! Easier than the 5.0's if you ask me. And the GTO comes factory with 425hp and the torque to back it up. I'd like to see this kid run a real race instead of douching up the street scene with bullshit. Just my opinion. Everybody's got one right?

    Another thing is, there are many turbo B16's or B18's running high 13's with about 8-10lbs of boost, where just a bolt on k20 is running low 13's, and even high 12's. All with full interior, and in a coupe. So this guy may have a loud exhaust, but it makes more power than my Apexi which bottlenecks. His is 2.5" and could see another 10-12whp with a 3" exhaust after some tuning. Some people want more NA power, so they don't care how loud it is. They just go bigger, because K-series lies bigger

    It was actually heavier than it came from the factory, during the filming of this video. 2330lbs plus another ~77lbs for gas, and another ~380lbs for that driver and passenger. Front interior is there. Rear seats don't even weigh 50lbs, then a spare tire, and the plastic panels in the back are like a pound or 2 each. Even full interior coupes with this motor, and even the USDM version and just bolt ons, run the same quarter mile times he did. Some faster. Again, with FULL interior, and a coupe

    It's actually a Buddyclub full exhaust. Rest of the mods are just intake, and Rcrew header, and no tuning.

    Did not strip the whole car down. During the filming, it was at least above 2600lbs with them in it. The rear is what is taken out. And if you know those cars, it's not much really. The back seats barely weigh anything, and the rear plastic panels are like 2lbs each, then a spare, and the rear carpet. From the factory, that hatch was 2330lbs. Add another 77lbs for gas, then some more for other fluids. Besides, a bolt on USDM K20a2 with basic bolt ons and full interior coupe could do the same

    Although this is the JDM k20a that comes with 220 to the crank, it can make 220-230whp with a bigger exhaust, better header and tuning. Even the USDM k20's with 200 crank HP can make 220-230whp with bolt ons and tuning.
    But a GSR will need cams, pistons, every bolt on possible to make that power. Possibly a ported head, since i've seen friends b20/GSR head being built and ported only making 220whp.

    If he did, he would have bogged down. There's still more room in the gears to gain speed in the gears he was bouncing. He was spinning tires. It's like saying he was only at 25 MPH since his tires spun, when he has another 10 MPH to go for the gear to top out. And if he shifted then, it's basically shifting too low and he will start the next gear too low as well and be slower.

    He still ran faster times than an LS1 Trans Am, and all that was to his motor was an intake, Rcrew header, and Buddyclub exhaust. It wasn't tuned either.

    a year ago i was a die hard muscle fan, if it didnt have a v8 i thought it was crappy and slow. but now ive slowly turned into a jdm guy and i love it;) i love the sound vtec and also the nissan Z's!!

    Just because a car can reach a higher speed in a certain gear, doesn't mean it's fast. Honda, and many other race cars as well, shorten the gears for better acceleration, and it allows you to stay in the power band. And another thing. This Civics speedometer reads in MPH. It went over 130 MPH in this video. Probably close to 220 KM/h. This Civic wasn't tuned, and the fuel cut was early. It's a 6 speed, and he couldn't use it all because of that. Its only intake, rcrew header & buddyclub exhaust

    400 hp supra... that's cute. Especially when those blocks stock can easily pump out 800 all day with good tuning and head.
    Also I highly doubt the supra is pushing 400. I can make up numbers too.

      ***** Sorry, but no matter what, whether you build your own race car or buy it, it's still expensive lol. Yes, it's cheaper than buying a super car, but it's expensive none the less. But you can't exactly compare a ten second queen to something designed to run that same thing for minutes.

    He went 13 flat in a quarter mile. He took it to the top of 5th which is ~131 MPH. And that's what I see in the video. ~130-ish. He lets of the gas, and it eases back down toward 120-ish when the camera is on the cluster.

    Whys everybody hating on Hondas? Isnt the point of the car building/racing hobby that most of have fun? So why does it matter what kind of car? As long as its fun to drive. It wouldnt be such a fun hobby if everyone liked all the same cars... So to all you Honda haters... You want all of us to like the same cars as you? Why?     Probably like 2200+lbs with no one in it. It's 2330lbs dry from the factory. Then ~77lbs for gas, then some more for other fluids. It is already above 2400lbs now. Then the weight of those 2 in there, it's above 2700lbs. But I am going to be generous, and say he took 100lbs out. More than likely not, but i'm being generous. The rear seats barely weigh anything. The rear plastic panels are like a couple pounds each. Then a spare tire, and carpet in the rear.

    With the arguing about this being "gutted". Take the fact that this 97, 2330lb hatch with gas, is now ~2407lbs. Then the weight of that driver, plus the passenger. Lets be generous and say that adds ~380lbs. Now the car is ~2787lbs. Rear sets don't even weigh 50lbs, and then a spare, and those rear plastic panels being like a pound or 2 each. I will be nice and say he took off 100lbs. It's still at least 2600+ in this video. There's full interior coupes doing the same with these swaps, same mods

    At the end it says it was built by Midwest automotive, so he's clearly pushing almost 300 crank hp which should be in the 12's. If supra did have 400whp it should of been along side it.

    Only 203whp UNTUNED. Intake, RCREW header, and Buddyclub exhaust. It's not "all" stripped out either. And what is taken out, barely weighs anything. Then the weight of those 2 in it make it heavier than it came from the factory by a lot. This is the JDM k20a from the 01-06 DC5 Type-R. There's full interior coupes with just bolt ons to a USDM k20 swap running the same times he did, and some are even doing better

    MANY of my friends (yeah so what if I mention friends, it's just an example) my age who have a "passion" for Hondas, also have houses, and other vehicles. So don't go assuming we're like you kids in highschool, or just out of highschool.
    Huy (his names pronounced "we") had a 720whp S2000, a real imported 99 Civic Type-R, 99 Civic Si, 2010 Civic, and a $90K BMW M5. He sold the S2k and both 99 Si's. He still has the others, and got a 94 Supra which now makes 1176whp and bought a 2011 Ecoboost F150
