How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a RUclips channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin. Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like. These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

I liked this format of showing the different "steps" to planting. It's something you've shown multiple times across different videos but putting them all together in one video helps those who are confused understand which order you do these in and why. Great video as always Ryan!

Talk about No Rain, My Horses Pastures are as dry as a Popcorn fart, and there are brown spots showing up now And after I put down all the Fertilizer and sprayed. Got me a little worried. You should do a trial next year; prep some ground with the harrow like normal and some with a roller (borrow/rent/demo). See if you can improve your yields with a roller over a harrow.
Yeah nice thing about a roller is that they push down any rocks on the surface. Doesn't drag residue around either. Read a study years ago that referenced a Russian crop study that showed that the heavier they rolled wheat the better the yield was. How that translates to soybeans, who knows, but a roller will DEFINITELY leave the field smoother than a drag harrow! OL J R :)

Around 7:40 you could see the difference in front of the tractor to behind the harrow. Here's hoping you get the right amount of rain at the right time.

I watched a family up the Road from my family plant corn every year when I was little here in Alabama. I wish I could have been fortunate enough to grow up on a farm. They also raised horses and I got to ride a few times.

I would recommend trying a rock or land roller , That is if someone has them for rent. You may be able to plant beans where you weren't able to before. I'm able to rent one and it defentlly improves harvest.

Read the comments on any video, people will say they miss his ex, or that he should wife Hanna, etc. As if we know the details of their relationship, or know anything about their private lives.
Around were I live in East Central Illinois, we usually use soil finishers for our pre plant tillage

You should rent or buy a land roller. A lot of farmers use them for their soybeans.
I’ve looked into it but they’re hard to find. We’ll eventually switch to one

Awesome video! I had a question I was hoping you might be able to answer. Is harrowing of the field typically done after planting the soybean or done directly after preparing the seed bed? I have seen it done both ways, but saw y'all did the harrowing after the planting in this video. Thanks for your help!

Why don’t you use a land roller?
What a harrowing tale. What I want to know is," how does Anna fit into all of this?

In the fall, after we round bale our corn fodder, we chisel plow the corn fields. In the spring we: (1) use our high speed disc with a roller bar rear finishing attachment, (2) plant our soybeans in 31 x 15" rows, (3) then we use a land roller to roll/flatten the ground. If needed, we may lay down some dry fertilizer before step 1. Later on, we do apply liquid nitrogen & some other fertilizer and spray herbicide/insecticide/fungicide as needed.
We plant soybeans into corn and corn no-til into soybeans. We do rotate in other crops such as hay, grain, etc.
So is harrowing the same as rolling the beans ? Is it the same thing ? Just a preference great job

Did you get all your grain sold?
I'm assuming the planter covers the seed and harrowing doesn't uncover as many it looks like it might. Surely there's some percentage of exposed beans after harrowing?
It doesn’t go deep enough to mess with the seeds. They’re all at pretty well the same depth, the planter pushes the ridges out of the way so the down pressure is pretty consistent across the planter

I really didnt know that it made a difference harrowing do you guys harrow the corn to?
No need... a corn head runs slightly off the ground (unless the corn blows down then you run the snoots down in the dirt to pick it up) but a soybean flex header uses a sickle cutterbar that slides right on the surface of the soil and "flexes" or bends (versus a "rigid" cutterbar header like typically used in wheat and other small grains and grain sorghum and rice and other crops where the plants are cut off higher up on the stalks). Because the cutterbar slides on the ground, and because soybeans typically produce pods full of grain right down to within a couple inches of the ground (sometimes right at the ground level but breeders try to develop varieties that don't do that so you don't lose yield since the sickle will only cut down to about an inch off the ground) you want it to be as smooth and level as possible, preferably with NO ROCKS or no exposed rocks-- that's where a roller is superior, in that it will PRESS DOWN the rocks that are laying on the ground surface so the cutterbar will just slide over them. Harrowing is the next best thing because it at least smooths out the surface of the field and drags some of the soil back into the depressions left by the planter unit gauge wheels and soil thrown aside by the residue wheels on the front of each planter unit, so the beans aren't growing down in the depression and producing beans low on the stalk that the cutterbar cannot harvest later on. PLUS, the cutterbar will run smoother with less wear on a level field versus one run on undulating ground where some of the cutterbar guards are running down in the dirt and plowing while others beside them are up off the ground-- this feeds less dirt into the combine as well saving wear and tear on it as well and producing a cleaner grain sample in the tank. Hi Ryan why do you guys still use and old johndeere box planter? we have run and international air planter on our since 1978 it was I of many smart decisions my dad today I run a 1255 16 row early riser and we love it now you probably would need something that big but mybe a 6or a 8 row would work you should look into trying one .

Hello. Could you not roll in the top after planting Cambridge roll style? Would probably save you some soil in the long run 🙃. Cracking work as usual and it's still nice seeing clean equipment being used. Stay safe 🏴

I am Brazilian, i want to know which is the space between which you use to plant soybeans?.
30 inch same planter as the corn. Lots of guys here going back to planters particularly 15 inch planters because there's less problems from disease like white mold in rows versus drilled beans. Planters are also typically wider than drills and have much better seed metering and seed placement and closing of the seed furrow, so better, more even emergence of the seeds from the ground, and less seed used saves money. 40 years ago drilling soybeans made higher yields because of the old varieties back then did better spaced out more evenly in four 7.5 inch drilled rows versus two 15 inch rows versus one 30 inch row in the same amount of space, but that's not really true anymore with modern genetics. Plus, back then adding a cheap grain drill to plant soybeans meant the corn planter could be planting corn and the drill planting beans at the same time, which meant planting got finished faster. Nowadays, there are plenty of older planters that might be a little too old or worn for planting corn accurately that can be bought cheap and set up for planting soybeans and STILL do a better job than a grain drill planting beans, and usually twice as wide as the drill it's replacing so a guy would get done that much faster...
Modern replicated field studies have shown that using modern varieties of soybeans, there's really NO advantage to drilling soybeans in versus planting them in 15 inch rows or 30 inch rows, but the wider rows DO have advantages in less disease pressure in bad years. The only real advantage a drill has is that the soybeans planted with a drill canopy faster than beans planted in rows, particularly 30 inch rows. Later! OL J R :)

Is it common in your area to harrow all your bean ground? In NW Ohio no one dose that here. Seems like your planter leaves ridges. That just doesn’t seem right
Ryan, a (probably) stupid non-farmer question: would harrowing across the grooves like you appear to be doing at 7:22 do better at flattening the ground? It seems most of the time you're going parallel to them.
It should do a better job, however in most situations with our strips we’re forced to go with the rows
In the part of Missouri where I live the kind of pre planting tillage you do is almost unheard of. Everyone has been no-till min-till for several years. Are you unable to make this work in your area? Significantly reduces inputs to raise a crop and cuts erosion losses as well.
I’ve been doing it with reduced yields compared to our regular tillage for six years now. No-till makes sense on $2-3 corn and dry years it will outperform the tilled ground. We’ve had 2 years in the last ten that were dry. Our soils retain moisture very well compared to the rest of the state. Part of the reason I was fighting against a mega solar facility being built in this area. No irrigation required.

We don't have a long enough growing season to plant winter wheat. We typically don't get the crops off until September-December and by then it's below freezing.
with all the corn blowing down last year one would suppose there alot of trash in the feild

No, faster you drag harrow the better job it'll do until it starts bouncing. Chain harrows like that are meant to run pretty fast. OL J R :)

Pick your trash wheels out of the ground and you wont have ridges.

That's because they farm in contoured strips... the strips are not perfectly even in places they widen out in other places narrow down, so some overlap is inevitable as the finish each strip. GPS won't fix that. OL J R :)
