The local contra dance group began dancing again in January of this year. I have been playing either bass or piano for their dances regularly since they began dancing again.
One of things that makes this video so great is that caller Steve Zakon-Anderson's calling fully matches the energy of Ed and John's fabulous music. I've watched and listen to this many times and it never gets old. So nice to see so many friends dancing and catch a few glimpses of myself towards the back of the hall :-) And thanks to Ray for the nicely edited video and excellent board sound.
Definitely one of my favorite bands to dance to. One of their Sunday afternoon appearances at the Guiding Star Grange in Greenfield MA. I was there. It was a blast.
@Miss Money Penny: Flying Tent, which is the opening tune on their first CD. It is a cover of the Kieth Murphy tune that can be found on "Big Bang" by the group Big Bandemonium. The two versions are very different, but both are absolutely amazing.
Yes, great band and calling. I loved dancing to them and getting a "dancer's high". I was also very aware, while watching, of the gendered calling and almost completely gendered dancing. The times sure have changed! I gotta say I miss getting to swing with a lot of women and few men; but partnering with a guy is fun too.
When we talk about what we like about the United States or what we think about its culture, I say that for me, the most representative thing about the country is the contradance. Not its space technology, or its powerful companies, or the dollar. It's the contradance.
I am trying to work out what the caller is saying - something that sounds like 'alaman'. Is this a type of dance step or figure (Allemande?) The 'transcript' is amusing but not helpful in the least - RUclips's voice-to-text software clearly needs updating ('Taliban', 'Alabama', 'Ala man', 'Allen man', 'Alamin', 'Allahu alem man', 'Alamelu'...)
So, if you go to the United States, don't be fooled by Las Vegas and its casinos, or the skyscrapers of New York. Go to the heart, go dance contra dance. You're welcome.

my favorite thing is when the time comes tht the calling is no longer needed and everyone is just completely in tune with it and flowing
This is the way.
Watching in Spring 2021, praying we can all dance again by Spring ‘22! :)
Vaccines are being widely distributed now; we ought to be dancing by fall!

Watching longingly, during covid break from dancing.
Ditto!!! :)
From the Before Times, yes.
I hope you're dancing again now!!
contra dancing is so much freaking fun :D and this music is fantastic
Probably the best video ever that shows the joy and excitement of contra dancing :) :) :)
The music is stellar and the dancers captivating
Thank you for posting this 💟
Joanne, you are most welcome. I wish I had today's video technology when I shot this but it still captures the joy of dancing.

Wow, great video. Recognized quite a few dancers.
Loving the music!! Fabulous. That sure looked like a fun dance.
Hey, I'm in this video. Perpetual e-Motion, my favorite dance band. Alas they are no more.
nice caller, music and crowd!!
The music as well as the dancing are completely mesmerizing. Thanks for making and posting the video.
(This dance sequence is "Chuck the Budgie" by Rick Mohr.)

I'm in happy tears watching this. I miss dancing to Perpetual e-Motion so much in Maine.
I am in Maine. Brought me to tears watching this because my generation has no idea how to contra dance
This is mesmerizing to watch
merci pour ces renseignements a bientot pourquoi pas a paris
I wish perpetual e-motion would do a tour in all new England, with contradance organizers.
I can almost feel the floor and smell that gay abandon in the air.
This makes me HOMESICK!!!
Where I live, there is no contra dsnce scene. I've GOT to get back to the Mainland!
The tune is Flying Tent
Fantastic music

Wonderful!
so many faces i havent seen in so long
It was kind odd when the camera zoomed in on that woman sitting out the dance, at the midway point.
WOW..this band ROCKS with Contra Dancers!

This is how people should interact
🤗
Can anyone tell me the dance title?

This is irrefutable proof that Maine has an atom of coolness in it.
one (1) atom
You shouldn't believe anything atoms say because they make up everything.
Big if true.
What is the name of this song? Is it on their CD? They are amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Flying tent. :) in the comments. w00t
"Flying Tent" composed by Keith Murphy of Vermont, and yes it's on their first CD

Is that a didgeridoo I hear?
Yes. There's a video from the same year that shows the band playing the same tune (and more) at ruclips.net/video/Xyhl89yGMFA/видео.html
#FairfieldIowa
what the heck does this have to do with Fairfield? very curious my friendly roo!
terrible choice of music!!! on my ch I recently did a lot of set dances set to REAL nerw england contra not this "new age trance "stuff
It's not suitable for children, but shows a lot of faith in dancers to internalise the phrasing. Well done all!
