  • More than thirty years after the first "Top Gun" took the world by storm, "Top Gun: Maverick" is taking Tom Cruise back to the skies - and he's not alone.
While the critically-acclaimed sequel is bringing in many new faces, from a new generation of pilots to the military's top brass, it's also bringing in a new love interest for Maverick: Jennifer Connelly's Penny Benjamin. Now, fans are asking: what happened to Charlotte "Charlie" Blackwood, the original love interest for the ace pilot?
If you're wondering where Charlie Blackwood is in the long awaited sequel, then you're going to want to hear Kelly McGillis' brutally honest take on her "Top Gun: Maverick" exclusion.

Two things… First, BRAVO!!!! Kelly’s stock just went up 100% with me. You know what, I love someone who’s self aware. No bitterness, no blaming and no trying to sabotage anyone else’s work. Second, she’s correct… Most people don’t have the same “love interest” as they did 30 years earlier. If they do, they are called a spouse. She’s a talented actress, who’s decided to leave that arena and move on. Athletes get past their prime and so did she and if she’s happy, let no one second guess her.

I think not bringing back Rooster's mom / having her pass away was very impactful in Rooster's character development and his relationship with Maverick. Maverick pulled Roosters papers at his mom's request. He could have easily told Rooster this after his mom passed. But chose to carry that burden with him so he wouldn't spite his dead mother. That's so much more powerful.

I think it would be LESS realistic if they brought her back. Hot shot pilot meets a girl at a bar while on a training assignment and turns into a 30 year relationship? Doesn't seem like it fit Mavericks personality in the first movie to really be ready to settle down. Them being together still would be Hollywood forcing fairytale love stories.

Also, not only people meet in any funny/weird ways and end married,it happens but people change, so the young man back then, may have decided to settle down because of love, so what?
"Fairy tale love stories" do happen a lot in real life as some couples stay together for decades so there would be nothing wrong with such a story line. You're either too young or too pessimistic.

@@jay4you853 yet ironically you're the person here showing the naivety of youth with your comment... :) Of course couples can meet and stay together, my own parents have been together for over 45 years now, but it's more believable for a young reckless pilot and an air force psychologist to not be suited and not survive 30 years between the 2 movies. It could happen and I'm sure there's a pilot and his air force psychologist out there somewhere, but the odds are very much "fairy tale" :) Maverick was perhaps destined to be reckless and married to the jet engine and that looks like where we still see him in this sequel.
Also it has to be said, Kelly McGillis was gorgeous in the original movie but hasn't acted much since and her behaviour has been erratic at times since, she alas wouldn't be a safe bet for the studio.

She's no more "past her glory days" than Tom Cruise, who executives did everything they could to boost the stereotypical illusion that men are somehow beyond the affects of aging. Granted Tom Cruise works hard to keep himself in shape, but I noticed the camera didn't linger too long on the beach scene, dare we notice that even TC has developed man-boobs as aging men will do & the choice of a younger actress to play his love interest is more about increasing his appeal than it is about the actress. My point, aging actors must rely on all the tricks of the trade (including ditching the age appropriate actress) so that men in denial can look up on the screen & believe they're the ones who haven't seen the last of their own "glory days".

Still, I think it would have been a nice eye blink if she had been making maybe just a very short appearance in another role, even possibly just a silent one, just as a tribute to her.
Also, the fact that, regardless of her absence on screen, her character would not even be mentioned at all, is quite disappointing and shocking as opposed to the role rightfully given to Iceman/Val Kilmer. This is rather inelegant from Cruise.

It was written well also for why they didn’t bring Meg Ryan’s character back. It also played into the plot and why Rooster and Maverick had conflict.
The writing all around was good. They connected all the dots quite well. There’s a clip where Penny- (an admiral’s daughter that Maverick was dating before he met Charlie in the original film) her daughter tells Maverick not to break her mom’s heart again, which connects it back to the original. At the time Maverick meets Charlie, he was already messing with Penny. Then he pursues Charlie and they have their romance- thus leaving Penny behind. The writer’s seriously took their time. You can tell it wasn’t a rushed film with a bunch of holes in the story and plot. It will stand the test of time.

Nah, disagree on Meg Ryan's character. You've got it backwards. They chose not to bring her back, and then wrote pretty minimally around that decision, at least from what's portrayed in the movie. It would easily have made sense, maybe even more, to have her back in. The truth is probably multi-faceted, one because they didn't want to look backwards all the time like they said, and two because Meg Ryan and Kelly McGillis also might not fit the roles/plots even excluding their physical appearances.

    • @danielmocsny5066
      @danielmocsny5066 2 года назад

It's no crueler than any other job that has requirements. If you are a computer programmer and you get early onset dementia and can no longer handle the cognitive demands of writing code, then you lose your job. There might be other jobs with fewer mental demands that you could keep longer in that scenario. Hollywood seems cruel but only because for most jobs looks don't matter much. But something always matters for every job, and if you lose whatever your job requires, you also lose your job.
To qualify for romantic lead roles in Hollywood films, an actor usually has to look good. Most people who look good are young. People age at different rates, and how they age also depends in part on how much effort they put into maintaining their looks. There are quite a few Hollywood actresses who were smoking hot in their 20s and then aged quite badly. You won't see a lot of young starlets reprising their roles in 30 years. The ones who can keep acting usually have to "mature" into different kinds of roles - roles that don't depend on instantly triggering sexual arousal in 99.99% of straight men in the audience. The few actresses who do remain attractive enough into their 40s and 50s for roles that require it often tend to make staying in shape a nearly full-time job. Fortunately for them, Hollywood is full of gyms and personal trainers to remove the guesswork, but nobody can do the exercise for you. Of course on the downside, Hollywood is also in sunny southern California where exposure to all that solar radiation wrecks people's skin. And there is also a huge party culture with drugs and alcohol further destroying people's looks.

She's gentle, but not easily duped, or manipulates easily. These 2 came back to each other stronger, wiser. It wasn't 'in your face' I'm better than you. Maverick grew, made mistakes, had hard decisions to make, this altered his behavior on his flying skills and relationship issues. She still cared about him.
